Deconstructing public discourse on undocumented immigration in the United States in the twenty first century

Owusu-Sarfo, Kwadjo 01 January 2016 (has links)
As the United States prepares to elect a new president, immigration continues to be one of the most controversial topics on the national agenda. While Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump announced his candidacy for president with the intent to build a wall along the border with Mexico, the Democratic presidential candidate, Hillary Clinton, has opted, instead to push for comprehensive immigration reform. The difference in approach is symptomatic of the divisiveness within the immigration debate. To explore this divide in depth, the dissertation’s research question is: What does the discourse on undocumented immigration in the United States in the 2000s reveal about the most salient drivers of conflict related to immigration. Using qualitative discourse analysis, the dissertation investigated coverage of the discourse on undocumented immigration in the mainstream news media, hoping to break the discourse into parts that can be examined to gain a deeper understanding of sources of conflict. Through the use of qualitative data analysis software, coding categories determined through identified sources of tension in the discourse spawned themes and topics that helped to analyze points of conflict. Through analyses of these themes, the research uncovered elements in the discourse that facilitated intergroup conflict through negative constructions of the out-group by the in-group. In order to mitigate conflict, the discourse on undocumented immigrants in the United States needs to be reconstructed in a way that untangles immigration issues from security issues and addresses the racialization and criminalization of immigration. In-depth media coverage of immigration stories with context can help facilitate a more constructive discourse.

Gränser och motstånd : En studie om ensamkommande ungdomars erfarenhet avpapperslöshet / Borders and resistance : A study on unaccompanied minors experiences of being undocumented

Sundvisson, Malin January 2021 (has links)
This paper analyzed how living undocumented can be understood in a Swedish, political context. The study was examined through three semi structured interviews with Afghan citizens who came to Sweden during 2015 as unaccompanied minors. The respondents have former lived undocumented in Sweden after having gone through an asylum process resulting in rejection in all instances. The material from the interviews was analyzed through a theoretical perspective on everyday resistance based on James C. Scott’s theoretical framework on the subject. The conclusion of the study showed that living undocumented can be seen as a form of resistance that can be understood as a social and relational phenomenon connected to the concepts of dignity in relation to places and understanding and the ideology of hope.

Contested Citizenship in the Trump Era: The Policy Effects and Everyday Experiences of Mexican Undocu/DACAmented Collegians

January 2020 (has links)
abstract: The oppressive legislative policies and polarizing media narratives of undocu/DACAmented Latinx im/migrants in the United States have created unfavorable campus climates, which have further marginalized those students in higher education who fit into this category. As a result of Donald Trump’s presidency and rescission of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program that soon followed, undocu/DACAmented Latinx students are experiencing an increase in stress, anxiety, and fear to the point that they become silent, depressed, and feel the need to advocate more for their existence and worth on campus. My critical ethnographic case study investigates the everyday experiences of Mexican undocu/DACAmented students enrolled at a public university in Arizona – a state that borders Mexico – as they pursue their undergraduate degrees in the Trump era. This study is guided by critical race theory and LatCrit, sense of belonging, and resistance capital theoretical frameworks, and seeks to answer the following: (a) how race and racism shape their collegiate experiences, (b) where these collegians find belongingness to persist towards graduation while navigating an anti-im/migrant sociopolitical climate, and (c) how these students exercise agency via their activism efforts. The broader case study includes individual collaborative interviews, twelve months of participatory field observations, and a collection of documents. This study aims to expand the field of higher education’s understanding of how federal, state, and institutional policies and policymakers affect undocu/DACAmented students’ experiences in and persistence through college, highlight the agency exercised and assets these collegians bring with them to college, and offer research, policy, and practical recommendations for higher education and student affairs institutional agents. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Educational Policy and Evaluation 2020

Myslet na všechny": Rétorika rovnosti v cílech udržitelného rozvoje práv na sexuální a reprodukční zdraví nedokumentovaných migrantů. / 'Leave No One Behind': The Rhetoric of Equality in the Sustainable Development Goals for Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights for Undocumented Migrants

Eti, Büşra January 2020 (has links)
'Leaving no one behind' is the slogan for strategies and action plans. Goal 3 of the Agenda aims to "Ensure healthy lives and promote being for all at all ages" which includes sexual and reproductive health. However, it leads ther the policy frameworks are leading to the goal of 'leaving no one behind'. In order to answer the question, migrants' rights is one of them. The construction of the inequalities in the discourse will be

The Relationship of Immigration Status with Mexican Immigrant Maternal and Child Well-Being in the United States

Lopez, Anayeli January 2018 (has links)
Thesis advisor: Thomas M. Crea / Thesis advisor: Ruth E. Prado P. / Undocumented Mexican immigrants and their children make up a considerable proportion of the United States population at risk of mental health problems. Yet research to inform the mental health of undocumented Mexican immigrants and their children is very limited, and the majority of existing studies are qualitative; both types of studies are needed to understand better the relationship among different factors that may influence the mental health of immigrant parents and their children. This three-paper dissertation analyzed the implications of parents’ and children’s immigration status for the mothers' mental health and the children’s behavioral problems. It utilized subsamples from the Los Angeles Family and Neighborhood Survey (L.A. FANS), a survey representative of Los Angeles County, which includes direct measures of respondent’s immigration status. Paper 1 used path analysis to examine the relationship between the mothers' immigration status and major depression, and whether self-efficacy served as a mediator. Surprisingly, undocumented mothers had fewer symptoms of major depression compared with Mexican American and documented mothers. However, when self-efficacy mediated the relationship, immigration status lowered self-efficacy, increasing symptoms of major depression. Paper 2 used hierarchical regression analysis to examine the associations of mother’s and children’s immigration status with children’s behavioral problems. Immigration status was significantly associated with internalizing problems, but not with externalizing problems. For children in mixed-status families, the influence of immigration status on internalizing problems was more severe for children in middle childhood compared to children in early childhood. The influence of immigration status on internalizing problems was more severe for adolescents compared to children in early childhood and middle childhood. Also, the mother’s self-efficacy ameliorated the negative influence of immigration status on children’s behavioral problems (internalizing and externalizing) for girls in undocumented and mixed-status families. Finally, marital conflict exacerbated the negative effects of immigration status on children’s behavioral problems (internalizing and externalizing) for girls in undocumented and mixed-status families. Paper 3 utilized path analysis to examine the mediating role of mother’s mental health (e.g., major depression and self-efficacy) and parenting stress in the relationship between immigration status and children’s behavioral problems. It was found that immigration status influences the mothers' mental health and parenting stress, which in turn influences the behavioral functioning of children in middle childhood and adolescents. Results of these three studies will help inform practice and policy by addressing critical gaps in the literature impacting a growing number of undocumented immigrant mothers and their children. / Thesis (PhD) — Boston College, 2018. / Submitted to: Boston College. Undocumented immigrants in Sweden stonewalled from accessing services: Professionals’ perspective

Guillén, Ana, Kebede, Simret January 2021 (has links)
The social exclusion of undocumented immigrants is a global phenomenon that concerns the social work profession. Despite laws that protect human rights, undocumented immigrants in many countries are facing multiple challenges associated with a lack of legal status, including in Sweden. This study aims to examine how the legal and other associated barriers act as exclusion mechanisms against undocumented immigrants in Sweden when accessing services. Data collection through a qualitative method, involving semi-structured interviews with professionals engaged in supporting this group, was carried out. The results were analyzed by using a deductive thematic analysis, applying the social exclusion theory, as well as using earlier research on the subject. The findings revealed the existence of structural barriers that exclude undocumented immigrants regarding accessing services; where civil society has intervened to give support. The findings also reflect that it has been difficult for social workers to act on the situation.

Att famla i blindo : En litteraturstudie om sjuksköterskors erfarenheter av papperslösa och asylsökande i hälso- och sjukvården / Flying blind : A literature review of nurses experiences of undocumented migrants and asylum seekers in the health care system

Furuhagen, Hanna, Andersson, Ellinor January 2012 (has links)
Background: Undocumented migrants and asylum seekers are part of society’s most vulnerable groups which the UN Human Rights seeks to protect. Swedish legislation does not comply with these rights. Undocumented migrants and asylum seekers often suffer physical and psychological problems and the road to health care is paved with obstacles. The Swedish Ethical Code for nurses describes a professional duty to provide care for all under the same conditions. Factors that prevent nurses from providing equitable care, cause problems and dilemmas. Aim: The aim of this study is to describe nurses' experiences of undocumented migrants and asylum seekers in the health care system. Method: Literature review with qualitative approach. Ten articles were reviewed and formed the basis for this study. Result: The findings of this study revealed four major themes Flying blind, Frustration, Cultural competence and An emotional challenge with eight subthemes. Conclusion: The lack of / ignorance of guidelines were clear. The writing and implementation of guidelines is therefore essential. Leininger transcultural nursing theory can inspire nurses to develop cultural appropriate care. Published research in this subject was limited therefore suggesting a lack of interest in this area of research. Clinical significance: By studying nurses' experiences, organizational barriers were identified. These may possibly be eliminated by clear guidance and knowledge. Highlighting this problem can lead to structural changes, thereby helping to incorporate equitable health care for all.

Experiences of undocumented Zimbabwean migrants on accessing healthcare services in Tshwane Metro, South Africa

Zhuwau, Tom January 2020 (has links)
Thesis (MPH.) -- University of Limpopo, 2020 / Background Health status and access to adequate healthcare are vulnerabilities that undocumented migrants face in the receiving country. The purpose of the study was to explore the experiences of undocumented Zimbabwean migrants on accessing public healthcare services in the Tshwane Metro, South Africa. Methods A qualitative, descriptive and exploratory research was conducted to explore the experiences of undocumented Zimbabwean migrants on accessing public healthcare services in Tshwane Metro, South Africa. A group of undocumented Zimbabwean migrants (n=20) were purposively sampled. Data were analysed using a grounded approach. Results The study has highlighted the challenges undocumented Zimbabwean migrants living in the Tshwane Metro, South Africa face when trying to access public healthcare services. The study also highlighted the alternative health-seeking strategies the migrants were using to access health services. The findings revealed that there were tensions between public health workers and undocumented migrants. These tensions were contrary to international compacts as well as the policy provisions of the South African government. Conclusion A human rights paradigm needs to be central to any dialogue regarding migrants, legal or illegal, as their health status was invariably entwined with that of the citizens of South Africa.

The Plight of Being Unrecognized in the United States: Should Undocumented Immigrants be Licensed to Drive in Florida?

Wilford, Jennifer 01 January 2015 (has links)
The United States of America is facing an important decision. Should illegal immigrants be allowed to obtain driver’s licenses? Thus far ten states and the District of Columbia as well as Puerto Rico have passed laws permitting this to come into fruition. The purpose of this thesis is to gain an understanding of the significance that licensing laws have on this country. This thesis will compare the views and beliefs of both the proponents and opponents to this law. This thesis also discusses how Florida is deeply affected due to its large Hispanic immigrant population. This issue is laden with passion and emotion due to the desire of many to see this group of people that are currently undocumented, have the ability to lead a more normal life and conversely the fear that allowing licenses will give undocumented aliens privileges of citizens and encourage illegal immigration. The views on these laws are divided throughout the nation. The lawfulness is examined in reference to rewarding and promoting illegal immigration and the cumulative negative effects that this can have on this country. The driver’s license requirements were analyzed for each individual state. News articles were researched and used to enrich the pros and cons on this topic. This research was then used to give a recommendation for Florida law
