Divergent Thinking Responses: An Evaluation of Substantive Validity under Multiple Scoring ApproachesSmith, Kendal 05 1900 (has links)
Divergent thinking (DT) tasks that solicit responses to open-ended stimuli are the most common form of assessment used in creativity research. Intended to measure creative potential, these tasks present researchers with multiple choices throughout administration and scoring that often result in widely varying scores. This study used a combined dataset from 9 independent samples (N = 1,066) containing DT responses (n = 15,935) to the alternate uses task to evaluate substantive validity under different scoring approaches. Human ratings of creative quality were compared to 11 additional quality scores based on statistical infrequency and semantic distance. Psychometric analyses were supplemented by review of response content to assess conceptual and operational correspondence. Results revealed several inconsistencies between and within scoring approaches, including considerable subjectivity required to group semantically equivalent responses before applying objective frequency rules; low reliability estimates for statistically unique responses; dictionary uses for some prompts scored as unique under 5% and 10% infrequency thresholds; variation in semantic distance scores of responses with similar meanings; and large within-subject differences across scoring types. Substantive review also indicated that how the creative dimension of appropriateness is operationalized can play a sizable role in score differences, such as treatment of responses featuring randomness, humor, fantasy, or cultural references. Recommendations for expanded reporting practices to support substantive validity in future DT research are discussed.

Connecting in Crisis: Exploring Online Informal Communications in Florida’s Unemployment StruggleEskamani, Anna V 01 January 2024 (has links) (PDF)
The COVID-19 pandemic led to widespread unemployment, significantly impacting Floridians who faced delays and systemic issues with the state's unemployment system. This study examines crisis communication within a Reddit community, focusing on how individuals used informal communications to navigate the unemployment benefits crisis. Guided by Rhetorical Arena Theory (RAT) and Uses and Gratification Theory (U&G), the research addresses: (1) How did individuals in the active audience discuss challenges faced when trying to access Florida’s unemployment system? (2) What lessons can be drawn from the analysis of informal communications on social media for improving crisis communication strategies during future crises? A qualitative content analysis of 215 posts from a subreddit created by Floridians seeking unemployment compensation, dated April 30, 2020, to December 31, 2020, was conducted using NVivo. Key themes identified included payment delays, systemic failures, financial and emotional distress, community support, and mistrust of government actions. The findings revealed that the subreddit was proactively used for information sharing and social cohesion. Despite frustration and anxiety from payment delays and administrative inefficiencies, users actively engaged in problem-solving and advocacy. The study extends RAT by highlighting the role of informal online networks in crisis communication and supports U&G by showing how individuals seek information and support during crises. This research underscores public administrators' need for robust crisis communication strategies that incorporate digital platforms and community participation. It emphasizes the importance of transparency, consistency, and responsiveness in government communications to maintain public legitimacy and improve unemployment system management during future crises. It also speaks to the importance of capacity building for public organizations and future research with administrative burden.

Marquise do Ibirapuera: suporte ao uso indeterminado / Ibirapuera Park´s great marquee: support to the indefinite useGurian, Eduardo Pereira 09 May 2014 (has links)
This study aims to analyze the design, formalization and occupation of the Ibirapuera Park\'s Great Marquee, through a trajectory that begins with the definition of the architectural brief for the IV Centennial of the city of São Paulo celebrations in the 1950\'s. Then was the decision to undertake the construction of what would be the largest public park in the city, plus a built set centralizing most of the proposed activities during the festivities. At lhe same time this great work should show the strength of the State\'s progress, it would serve as a legacy to future generations. Thus, the construction of functional program and subsequent architectural design of Oscar Niemeyer and team, show up as a source of fundamental analysis to understand the emergence of the connecting element, a large marquee, between the proposed thematic pavilions. Showing the evolution of the design, its precedents and adversities during the construction period. Conforming the first part of this work. The second part of the work is concerned with the observation and data collection of the activities performed under this great cover upon completion of its construction. Demonstrating, through a significant sample size, its architectural ability to provide support to a number of uses, whether preprogrammed or spontaneous, over the last 60 years. Overcoming its initial briefing as a connection and support to the pavilions, it consolidates itself as a place of intense social life and meeting, open to unpredictability, to the indefinite use.

Determining the feasibility of using mobile phones to strengthen the information management of preventative health care in South AfricaSnyders, Frans Johannes 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MEng)-- Stellenbosch University, 2013. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: South Africa’s health sector has not yet shown enough improvement to reach the Millennium Development Goals related to health. One of the problem areas is the low infant and child vaccination coverage in certain areas of South Africa. The use of mobile phones in health care (mHealth) has the potential to strengthen the primary health care system through improved information management. A mobile health solution for vaccination (MHSV) can be used to improve information management of vaccinations, which in turn can improve vaccination coverage. However, the feasibility of implementing such an MHSV in the South African context is unknown.
This study therefore investigates the feasibility of using mobile phones to improve information management for child vaccinations in South Africa. Feasibility is determined by using a feasibility framework together with business model development.
The feasibility framework, which is informed by a literature study, surveys and a case study, determines the feasibility of an MHSV in terms of human factors, technical feasibility, information management, policies and ethics, and economics. It is found that an MHSV is feasible in South Africa, although certain areas pose challenges that will have to be considered.
Complementing the feasibility framework, business models are developed to suggest possible ways in which an MHSV can be deployed in South Africa. These models build on the results from the feasibility framework and are developed using Osterwalder’s business model canvas. The effect of the National Health Insurance (NHI) on these business models is also examined.
In order to validate the feasibility framework and business models, interviews were held with experts in health care and mobile phone solutions. These interviews show that the research is valid and that the feasibility framework and business models can be generalised to the wider field of mHealth solutions.

"Juste un peu de vidéo" : la vidéo partagée comme langage vernaculaire de la contestation : Tunisie 2008-2014 / Just a little bit of video : shared videos as vernacular language of protest : Tunisia 2008-2014Riboni, Ulrike Lune 06 December 2016 (has links)
From the Burma uprising in 2007 to the revolutions of the Arab world in 2011, the uses of digital video have continued to grow, from the heart of demonstrations and riots to the internet. Based on observations conducted on the internet and on a field survey in Tunisia, the thesis describe the evolution of moving image uses in the Tunisian revolutionary process between 2008 and 2014, and interrogates the place and role of these practices in a social world in turmoil. Content analysis combined with analysis of the socio-political tensions that led and succeeded the uprising, suggests that taking pictures is not only a strategic utility practice to raise awareness or to produce alternative information, but that it serves complex objectives marked by the struggle issues of the different periods. From the first uses in authoritarian period to the uses during riots weeks, from edited clips for recognition of revolutionary actors to productions for the recognition of marginalized populations, shared videos revealed as the vernacular language of protest.

“Social media has become like a person” : A qualitative interview study on social media communication using social media in collaboration with friends.Lewin, Mirjam January 2018 (has links)
