Chaput-Langlois, Sophie 08 1900 (has links)
Interventions to reduce peer aggression and victimization in school settings currently show modest effectivity, lead on in part by limited knowledge on the development of peer victimization during the early school years. More specifically, there is a lack of information about which roles, or profiles, linked to peer aggression and victimization exist from school entry onwards, and how they change over time, as well as how children’s social behaviours are associated to them. To address this issue, this thesis aims to understand the different profiles of social behaviour and peer victimization that children can present from kindergarten to second grade. The study included 1757 children from two birth cohorts in the Quebec (Quebec Longitudinal Study of Child Development - QLSCD). More specifically, the first study included in this thesis explores the development of different profiles related to social behaviour and peer victimization from kindergarten to second grade, using annual measures of children's physical aggression, relational aggression, victimization, and prosocial behaviours. The results of the latent profile analyses performed show that boys present the same four profiles each year: prosocial, normative, physically aggressive-victimized (physically AV) and aggressive-victimized (AV). Girls present four profiles in kindergarten (prosocial, normative, socially aggressive and AV) and five in first and second grade (prosocial, normative, victimized, socially aggressive, and AV). Latent transition analyses aimed at testing the stability of profile membership over time showed that children tend to stay in the same profile over the years, especially if they are prosocial or AV. This study offers a slightly different typology from the one that is typically used in peer victimization theories, and it highlights the precocity of social behaviour and peer victimization problems for some children, stressing the importance of early identification and intervention. The second study of this thesis validates the typology of social behaviour and peer victimization and aims to identify potential targets for evaluation and intervention. It tests whether preschool cognitive abilities predict profile membership from kindergarten to second grade and tests whether children’s concurrent school experience differs according to their profile. For the first aim, results showed that high cognitive abilities predict a greater likelihood of exhibiting a prosocial rather than an AV role when controlling for socioeconomic status. For 6 the second aim, results showed that the quality of AV children’s school engagement and relationship with their teacher is worse than those of prosocial children at all time points, or of socially aggressive girls in first and second grade. Once again, these differences highlighted how early difficulties associated with children’s social problems can start. In conclusion, this thesis confirms the existence and relevance of a typology of social behaviour and peer victimization at the start of schooling, highlighting the stability of profile membership and the precocity of associated problems. Targets are identified to improve screening and the effectiveness of preventive interventions. Differences between boys’ and girls’ typologies and school experience, the uniqueness of the socially aggressive girl profile, and the struggles of AV children from kindergarten onwards are discussed.

Pitre-Joyal, Gabrielle 17 April 2018 (has links)

Jewellery store robbery: a victim risk and intervention perspective

Zannoni, Elio 30 April 2008 (has links)
The exploratory study investigated jewellery store robbery from a victim risk and intervention perspective. An explanation of the phenomenon was offered based on the information obtained from a review of the existing literature, case studies, personal observations at jewellery stores, discussions with jewellers, a scientific questionnaire submitted to jewellers, and semi-structured and structured interviews conducted with a group of knowledgeable respondents and victimised jewellers respectively. A predominantly quantitative research method was applied. The research findings obtained during the study enabled a proposal for a jewellery store robbery intervention model based on the situational crime prevention perspective, which is inclusive of decisional, environmental, situational, procedural, personnel and business-oriented strategies. / Criminology / M.A. (Criminology)

Guidelines for a shelter service delivery for victims of abuse

Groenewald, Johanna Jacoba 11 1900 (has links)
This research was initiated, based on the recommendations of Groenewald (2006:126-127), in the Evaluation of Programmes of Shelters for Victims of Abuse in Gauteng Province, to develop a shelter service delivery model. The research is exploratory in nature and outlines the literature review, methodologies, tested shelter model and findings based on the experiences of stakeholders. These stakeholders are responsible for the registration and management of shelters for victims of abuse in South Africa. They include nine Provincial Victim Empowerment Programme Co-ordinators and thirty-two shelter managers. The main objectives for shelter managers and Government Departments, such as Social Development, are to provide care, support and protection. The aim is also to empower those who were caught up in relationships, fraught with gender-based violence, as well as to break the cycle of violence. This is presented in the guidelines for a shelter service delivery model for victims of abuse. The shelter model focuses on three phases: o Intake procedures o Programmes and services o Exit strategy These three phases address both psycho-social issues and the self care of service providers. The main purpose of the shelter model is to provide social service providers with a structural format for intervention with victims of abuse and their significant others. The outcome, for most of them, should be to come to terms with themselves and create a personal vision for the future without abuse or, alternatively, to take a firm stand against such actions. The model is based on a person-centered approach in order to assist victims of violence, within a development model, to attain effective living. Other findings of the research are, among others, that there is neither legislation, nor registration procedures for shelters for victims of abuse in place, except for Non-Profit Organisations, which is voluntary. It is recommended that Government should consider the amendment of the Domestic Violence Act, 116 of 1998. These amendments should include accreditation of service providers, registration requirements, norms, standards and uniform funding criteria. / Social Work / D. Phil. (Social Work)

Tagodoé, Noutépé 09 1900 (has links)
The transatlantic slave trade has never been studied in a criminology way. In fact, with the exception to history, few disciplines in the social sciences and human studies have made interest to study the surrounding events of the slave trade. However, recent studies have begun to seize the multiple victimizations (physical and psychological attacks) undergone by Blacks during the transatlantic slave trade. We postulate that criminology can also contribute to a better understanding of the transatlantic slave trade, therefore, this study aims to evaluate Afro-descendants perceptions of the transatlantic slave trade victimizations and effects. The qualitative interview data clearly illustrates that the slave trade does not belong to the past. It is quite the contrary, the slave trade is still vivid on the spirits and the hearts. The atlantic slave trade effects hit the Afro-descendants in their daily life by means of low self esteem, low self confidence, skin color hierarchy, internal racism and self hatred. Consequently, all respondents argue for, at least, a form of reparation (monetary, ethical or political, historical, educational, pscychological, diplomatic) for the atlantic slave trade and its consequences. The data, moreover, shows that there is a division in the representations of the atlantic slave trade between those who believe the functionalist approach and those who believe the intentionalist approach, and also differences of representations according to the ethnic group (African or Carraibean).

Potentially hurdling over the psychological barriers to reporting xenophobic incidents through a third-party reporting mechanism

Steenkamp, Zindi 05 1900 (has links)
Abstracts in English, Afrikaans and Southern Sotho / The prevalence of hate victimisation in South Africa remains unknown, as does its full impact. Anecdotal evidence, borne out by recent research findings, suggests hate-based attacks on non-nationals have increased in recent years, distinctly reflecting a picture of heightened vulnerability. For several reasons, the severity of such victimisation, and their physical and psychological impact, go mostly unseen. Hate-motivated incidents, such as hate speech and intentional unfair discrimination, are possible precursors to additional criminal victimisation. Records of such incidents can be helpful to demonstrate both a context of harassment and evidence of escalating patterns of violence. Worldwide, under-reporting of hate victimisation is a longstanding concern and requires an urgent solution. In South Africa, under-reporting has contributed to the nonrecognition of hate crime as a separate crime category. Towards aiding in finding a solution, this study explored the psychological barriers to reporting xenophobic victimisation to relevant authorities. The study, furthermore, explored with a group of victims who experienced xenophobia whether they reported victimisation, the reasons for reporting and under-reporting, and their thoughts and opinions on the workability of a third-party reporting mechanism. Non-probability sampling, specifically applying convenience and purposive sampling was used to obtain 19 participants for the four semi-structured focus groups. While all participants reported being victimised because of their nationality, the study found that multiple psychological barriers prevent such victims of xenophobia from reporting victimisation to authorities. Many of the participants do not believe in the workability of third-party reporting mechanisms. The protection of child victims and witnesses in a post-constitutional criminal justice system with specific reference to the role of an intermediary : a comparative study

Bekink, Mildred 05 July 2017 (has links)
It is common knowledge that owing to their particular vulnerability children worldwide falls prey to physical and/or sexual violence in the home and/or community or witness criminal acts. Consequently children are called upon to testify in a court of law to cruelties or acts of violence. As a result of their developmental shortcomings and immaturity, children find the criminal justice system extremely intimidating and challenging. The importance of realising a justice system that not only affords an accused person the right to a fair trial but also protects and safeguards the rights of the child victims of and witnesses to the crime is thus indisputable. The purpose of this research was therefore to assist the South African criminal justice system in its on-going challenge to find a balance between the right of the accused person to a fair trial and the protection and safeguarding of the rights of child victims and child witnesses. The protection and safeguarding of the rights of child victims and child witnesses in terms of the South African Constitution, applicable domestic law and international instruments relating thereto were extensively discussed and shortcomings identified. Possible solutions to ensure that child witnesses and child victims are adequately protected and supported during the trial stage of the criminal process were advanced. Particular emphasis was placed on the role of an intermediary in assisting child victims and child witnesses during the court process. Comparative research on the protection of child victims and child witnesses in the criminal justice systems of New Zealand and Namibia were also conducted. Conclusions drawn from comparative studies were used to recommend appropriate changes to the current system. It is submitted that the adequate protection and safeguarding of the rights of child victims and child witnesses are dependent not only on sound legal principles but also on governmental and other involved stakeholders’ commitment toward the realisation of these rights. In order to give proper effect to the protection and safeguarding of child victims’ and child witnesses’ rights, it is proposed that the recommendations made throughout this study should be adopted and implemented. In this regard the role of an intermediary is crucial and the use of intermediaries should be promoted. / Private Law / LL.D.
