The contemporary context has increasingly demanded that the various spheres of human life to acclimate to the new technologies of information and communication. Due to concern with respect to physical inactivity, obesity and the risks that these processes cause to human health associated with the large number of virtual game users, the benefits of games known as exergames (EXGs) have been discussed more often. The study included 18 volunteers of both genders, with a mean age of 22 (± 1). The instruments used for data collection were the IPAQ (International Physical Activity Questionnaire) - Short Version, in order to measure the physical activity level of each of the participants. Was used POMS (Profile of Mood States) applied before and after each 40 minute session with intervention EXGs. Other instruments used were the Effort Subjective Perception Scale based on the scale 0- 10 proposed by Borg et al. (1982) and the Inventory of Motivation, Virtual Games and Practice of Physical Activities / Sports, composed of 108 questions divided into two sections, Videogame and Physical / Sports Activities. At the end of 4 weeks, an interview was conducted, based on the map interview in order to collect data on the motivational aspects, physical activity and virtual games. For the practice of EXGs we used a Samsung LED TV 40 "(5300 series 5 model), a Microsoft Xbox360® with Kinect® and games related to sports and physical activities. From the data found and the reports of the participants, supported by recent literature, it was noted that the TDICs and virtual reality immersive environments are strongly present in the daily lives of the young participants of this study. With the results of this study can be seen that the EXGs work as a motivational factor for physical activity. The reports of the participants, as well as the data collected pertaining to their emotional states during the intervention sessions (POMS and Inventory Motivation, Virtual Games and Practice of Physical Activities / Sports), could contribute to the confirmation of the initial hypothesis that the EXGs contribute to its practitioners be motivated to carry out activities outside the virtual environment.

No capítulo de resultados há um manuscrito, o “Validity and reliability assessment of the Brazilian version of the Game Addiction Scale (GAS)”. / Video games are a contemporary form of media, which have their own aesthetic and require real-time strategies. Several benefits are related to this usufruct, some of which are foreign language learning and group interaction. In parallel, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders - 5th Edition (DSM-5) inserted, in its latest edition, the Internet gaming disorder. It is credited an estimated value in researching this topic, considering that part of the world's population is showing signs of this addiction. But one of the problems to understanding this possible addiction is the lack of uniformity in diagnostic criteria that measure this phenomenon. The validation of a tool that serves for this purpose can contribute to mental health professionals to understand and evaluate the video game addiction in adults. The hypothesis of the study was to determine whether the Game Addiction Scale (GAS) and the Video Game Addiction Test (VAT) are safe and valid instruments to measure the video game addiction in Brazilian adults. The objective was to adapt the instruments GAS and VAT to be used in Brazilian adults gamers and test its psychometric properties in a sample of university adults. The chapter of material and methods revealed the validation process and its stages, the type of study, the data collect and analysis procedures and ethical research procedures. In the chapter of results there is one manuscript, the “Validity and reliability assessment of the Brazilian version of the Game Addiction Scale (GAS)”. Other five articles, already published, are at the appendix: “Comorbidade entre dependência de jogos eletrônicos e depressão: uma revisão sistemática”, “Neuroimagem na dependência de jogos eletrônicos: uma revisão sistemática”, “Internet and video game addictions: a cognitive behavioral approach”, “Avaliação da equivalência semântica e consistência interna da Game Addiction Scale (GAS): versão em português” and “Cross-cultural adaptation and evaluation of the psychometric properties of the Brazilian version of the Video Game Addiction Test”. The cultural and semantics adaptation process of the GAS and VAT demonstrated a great level of understanding of the participants, being held a few changes in terminology and syntax structures. The instruments showed a high level of internal consistency and a high correlation between them; the GAS and the VAT achieved moderate correlation with the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and the Internet Addiction Test (IAT) and moderate to low correlation with the Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale (LSAS). Other relevant points in validating the GAS and the VAT are that both showed a satisfactory temporal stability. It is suggested for further studies that these instruments should be applied to different populations with a lower retest interval (one to two weeks) and that a better factor solution should be assessed, and determining cut-off points for symptom classification levels of the GAS and the VAT.

Linguagens gráficas em videogame: Nascimento, desenvolvimento e consolidação do videogame como expressão gráfica / Graphic language of video games: birth, evolution and consolidation of video game as a graphic expression.

Alan Richard da Luz 24 April 2009 (has links)
The proposal of this work is investigate the development and consolidation of the graphic language of video games, from a graphic design point of view, splitting the influence vector in three axis: history, technology and language. While the development of the video game industry shows the economy influence and the growing of the market, the evolution of technology brings the ascendency in the medium of video game, determining and giving form to its expressivity by the sintax point of view. The matureness of the graphic language od video games happens into the logic of remediation proposal by Bolter and Grusin (1999) and this influence axis, built in parallel with the other two, shows how digital midia are permeable and borrow languages from other tradicional midia, as in sintax as in semantic way, establishing its own language.

Controversies surrounding the electronic games addiction

Guilherme Pinho Meneses 15 December 2014 (has links)
The effort to be undertaken in this research will be mapping the practices of the various agents around the issue of video game addiction by investigating the manner in which the rhetoric of drug addiction works in the social regulation of the use of electronic games. In this sense, well map the varied semantics of notions, categories or concepts of dependence and addiction, such as enunciated and practiced by the various individuals involved in the controversy: the players themselves (in its multiple gaming environments such as home, school or work), parents or people close to these players, the games industry professionals, scientists from different fields (psychiatry, psychotherapy, education, game studies), politicians, laws and news. Through the analysis of practices and discourses of the actors, articulating the dimensions of the so-called \"real\" world and the virtual worlds, without, however, falling into an asymmetrical dichotomy between true and false, we intend to understand the meanings of their relationships with videogames.

Using graphical attributes to influence the perception of safety in a 3D environment

Karlsson, Julia January 2016 (has links)
Context. Most games make use of graphics to create an environment that fits the mood they wish to convey. To use a game's graphical attributes such as colour, shape and texture to their utmost ability, knowing how these are perceived could help. Objective. This paper tries to determine how graphical attributes such as colour, texture, and shapes affect the perceived safety of a path inside a 3d environment. Method. To reach the objective, an experiment was conducted with 20 participants. The experiment was a two-alternative forced-choice (2AFC) test of 38 pairs of images, where each pair contained two versions of a tunnel entrance scene rendered using different graphical attributes. Each difference was based around either colour (warm and cold colour schemes), shape (round, wide, angular and thin), or texture (rugged, neutral and sterile). Results. The experiment generated results that varied compared to the expected results. For instance, the wider shapes were seen as safer compared to the thinner shapes, as was the same result with rounder shapes being perceived safer than angular shapes. Although a few preferred the cold colour scheme, the warmer colour scheme was seen as safer by the majority. While expected to be perceived as less safe than neutral textures but more than the rugged ones, the sterile texture was actually most commonly seen as safe. Conclusions. The main conclusion that was made is that colour, texture and shape can be applied to change the perception of safety in a scene. However, when opposing attributes are used in combination, the result might be based on how dominant the attribute is. The dominance of the graphical attributes could be an interesting topic for future work.

The Practice and Evolution of Video Game Translation: Expanding the Definition of Translation

Bushouse, Elizabeth 17 July 2015 (has links)
This paper looks at the practice and history of video game translation, with the goal of expanding the definition of translation. Video game translation is a complex process that incorporates a number of aspects from other types of translation, such as literary, audiovisual, and software translation, to form a dynamic whole. As a new medium, video games also present their own challenges to translation in the form of interactivity, technology, non-textual and extra-textual elements, audience involvement, and new business practices. Even though video games are a relatively new medium, the practice of translating them has undergone drastic transformations over the years. A case study of the various official translations of Final Fantasy IV provides a brief overview of this development to help the reader get a complete understanding of the video game translation process. The paper concludes by arguing that the different sign systems present in video games are integral to the player’s understanding of the game, and should be considered as aspects that can be translated. Parallels are also drawn between the translation process and the medium of the video game, to show that different approaches to translation can provide the audience with a more holistic view of a work.

Complementary Companion Behavior in Video Games

Scott, Gavin 01 June 2017 (has links)
Companion characters in are present in many video games across genres, serving the role of the player's partner. Their goal is to support the player's strategy and to immerse the player by providing a believable companion. These companions often only perform rigidly scripted actions and fail to adapt to an individual player's play-style, detracting from their usefulness. Behavior like this can also become frustrating to the player if the companions become more of a hindrance than they are a benefit. Other work, including this project's precursor, focused on building companions that mimic the player. These strategies customize the companion's actions to each player, but are limited. In the same context, an ideal companion would help further the player's strategy by finding complementary actions rather than blind emulation. We propose a game-development framework that adds complementary (rather than mimicking) companions to a video game. For the purposes of this framework a "complementary" action is defined as any that furthers the player's strategy both in the immediate future as well as in the long-term. This is determined through a combination of both player-action and game-state prediction processes, while allowing the companion to experiment with actions the player hasn't tried. We used a new method to determine the location of companion actions based on a dynamic set of regions customized to the individual player. A user study of game-development students showed promising results, with a seventeen out of twenty-five participants reacting positively to the companion behavior, and nineteen saying that they would consider using the framework in future games.
