Os sentidos da paisagem / The senses of the landscape

Silvia Maria Ribeiro Valentini 06 December 2012 (has links)
This work researches the spatial perception that visual impaired persons have of the urban landscape. It also covers the social interactions of blind people with other citizens, discussing aspects of sympathy, conflicts, stigma, and prejudice. Furthermore, it seeks to identify the emotional - and subjective - mechanisms of evaluating the space that arise through the pathways, not disregarding its physical attributions. In addition it looks for the remembrance of values and affection towards the landscape. Based on the understanding that the urban landscape is a public and shared heritage, the visual impaired person claim equal treatment of citizens and independent access to it. People with visual impairment want to be heard and accepted for their talent and potential, while the population insists in recognizing and labeling them only for their disability.

In contemporary global reality, where visual impairment affects about 45 million people, the thesis relates to the area of communication studies (and media reception), identity and disability, through topics such as visual impairment, television, television journalism, image, representation, social inclusion, citizenship and the right to information and communication. The proposal is based on two main issues: to analyze the representation that the main Brazilian television news (Jornal Nacional, Globo) produces relating to the visually impaired, based on a textual analysis of TV applied to 16 news on the subject, aired during the year 2011 (January-December); and to check in a reception research with focus groups of eight visually impaired, as they interpret that representation, noting, for example, if they feel identified with it and respected by that same newscast. The theoretical and empirical approaches are organized into four chapters that compose the study: “Visual impairment: scientific and social perspectives”; “Media communication and identities”; “Media representation of the visually impaired in Jornal Nacional: textual analysis of news”; and “Identities and reception of TV news by visually impaired: research with focus group”.

Delaktighet – en fråga om sammanhang och tillgång till kontext : En explorativ studie om villkor för delaktighet för ett barn med synnedsättning i kombination med flera funktionsnedsättningar i en inkluderande förskolemiljö / Participation – a matter of context and accessibility

Jansson, Håkan January 2016 (has links)
The idea for this study has gradationally grown under many years of work and experience with children with visual impairment in combination with additional disabilities. It has especially been in meeting these children the realization that the conditions for their participation looks very different have grown. Many efforts have been made, but they rarely concentrate on finding out how children interact with their environment and how different factors in the environment effects the child’s participation. This study’s purpose is to examine the conditions for a young child’s participation in an included preschool environment. The study’s main focus is a 3 ½ year old boy with reduction in sight - motor activity and ability functions. The study’s empirical evidence consists of 19 video-observations gathered under a period of 1½ years. The study has two main question formulations: 1) How a child’s environment effects the child’s participation? 2) Is it possible to apply World Health Organization (WHO:s) International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health -Children and Youth (ICF-CY) as a method to make visible the factors that effects a child’s participation in an included preschool environment? The study’s start is qualitative with a clear exploratory character. The study has been organised in tree steps. 1) Video-observations and transliteration, 2) Coding according to ICF-CY and 3) analyse according to a model of five environmental aspects of participation. The study’s result presents on an individual,–method and model level. On an individual level the most apparent is context for the conditions for a child’s participation. On a method level the ICF-CY study did not give enough substance to make visible a child’s participation and a specially the interaction between the individual and the environment. It also showed to be difficult to choose the most appropriate code. On a model level two perspectives are made visible on participation; the sociological and the developmental psychological. The resultalso show that ICF-CY together with a model containing five environmental aspects of participation gave a better holistic picture of situations and interaction between the individual and the environment.

Vivier, Yolande 25 February 2005 (has links)
This study is aimed at looking at the relationship experiences between the adolescent with visual impairment in institutional care and his family. A lack of sufficient guidelines in this field has been identified in the relevant literature. Experts working with these adolescents have confirmed this shortcoming. In order to reach the required goal, a number of objectives were set. By means of a literature study and consultation with experts in the field of blindness as a symptom (in terms of the degree of visual impairment that is experienced), a theoretical framework was set up with regard to the following: adolescence as part of life; the adolescent's relationship with his family; institutional care and institutionalization; as well as play therapeutic assessment and play therapeutic techniques. An empirical study where semi-structured interviews were used as a method of data collection, was undertaken to assess the relationship of the adolescent with visual impairment in institutional care with his family. The following aspects were handled specifically: the way the adolescents with visual impairment in institutional care experience holidays and weekends with their families; their view of their families' perception of them coming home for holidays or weekends; their opinion with regard to family chores and responsibilities that are allocated to them; their experience of participating in the decision making process in the family; their perception of the treatment that they receive from their parents – does it differ in any way from that of their siblings?; their view with regard to “feeling part of” the family as an equal and complete family member; their opinion with regard to things that they would have liked to be done differently during their growing up process; as well as advice that they would give to parents who have children with the same disabilities. Individual semi-structured interviews were used with the ten respondents. Applied research was undertaken as the researcher aimed at establishing solutions for problems that occur with the adolescent with visual impairment in institutional care with regard to his relationship with his family. The researcher used a qualitative approach as research procedure in order to get qualitative empirical data. Considering that in this study a relatively unknown field was researched, a phenomenological strategy within an exploratory study was used to explore, understand and interpret the research question, which is not well known. The research question formulated for this study was: What are the experiences of the adolescent with visual impairment in institutional care with regard to his relationship with his family? Empirical data, which was obtained by using an interview schedule and a play therapeutic technique, showed that: § Adolescents with visual impairment in institutional care are experiencing ambivalent feelings (positive and negative) with regard to spending holidays and/or weekends with their families. There are a variety of factors influencing this experience, whether positively or negatively. § The way adolescents with visual impairment in institutional care view their families' perception with regard to them coming home for holidays or weekends, is mainly influenced by three factors, namely: special activities that are organized during the time that the adolescent is at home, as well as verbal and non-verbal behavior that is communicated towards the adolescent. § Adolescents with visual impairment have a specific opinion with regard to chores and responsibilities that were allocated to them since they were younger. This includes aspects like the adolescents' willingness and ability to complete chores, as well as their willingness to ask for help. They intimated that they are willing to accept chores and responsibilities as they experience positive feelings when they are able to complete such tasks successfully. § Adolescents with visual impairment in institutional care have a specific opinion about their participation in the decision making process in the family. This includes emotions that are experienced with regard to the decision making process (positive emotions are experienced when their opinions are asked in family decisions), their involvement in the decision making process, as well as the influence of decision making on the atmosphere in the house. § Adolescents with visual impairment have a fixed perception with regard to the treatment that they receive from their parents. This perception includes the following aspects: a need for normal treatment, the consequences of preference treatment from their parents, strict treatment (overprotective treatment) from their parents, as well as the emotions they experience about the type of treatment that they are exposed to. § The way adolescents with visual impairment view themselves as “part of” the family - as equals to all household members - is influenced by the following aspects: the influence of institutionalization on the feeling of “belonging to“ (adolescents are away from home for long periods of time and the only contact they have are telephone calls); family events (special activities in which both the family and the adolescent participate during holidays or weekends); family interaction (the families communicational patterns during holidays or weekends); as well as the private space of the adolescents (bedrooms). § Adolescents with visual impairment have a specific opinion with regard to things that they would have liked to be done differently during their process of growing up. They feel that their families should have more insight into the world of people who are visually impaired. They also have the need to be treated in the same way as other family members – they do not want to be overprotected. § Adolescents with visual impairment want to give relevant advice to parents of children who have the same disability. The advice that they suggested are: The child must function more independently; parents must be honest with their child at all times; the child must be treated normally; a feeling of unconditional, positive acceptance must be revealed to the child; no unnecessary restriction must be imposed on the child. They also gave advice with regard to general information (to expand parents' knowledge). The study revealed the experience of the adolescent with visual impairment in institutional care of his relationship with his family, which holds further research possibilities. The desired information was acquired and can be used in further studies of the adolescent in a similar situation. / Dissertation (MSD (Play Therapy))--University of Pretoria, 2006. / Social Work and Criminology / Unrestricted

La compréhension des images tactiles chez les enfants porteurs d'un handicap visuel / Understanding of tactile pictures in visual impaired children

Orlandi, Oriana 10 July 2015 (has links)
The present PhD aims at understanding how Visual Impaired (VI) children process the tactile pictures that illustrate the tactile books specially designed for them. Our work is organized around two main axes of analysis. The first axis concentrates on the child who explores the tactile images, while the second axis focuses on the impact that the properties of these images can have on children’s haptic processing. Our researches included children presenting various degrees of visual impairment but without any associated disorders (in particular, without any cognitive delay), distinguishing early blind children from children with low vision. We also compared their performance with those of sighted children of similar ages. The results showed that children’s perceptive experience, varying according to their degree of visual handicap, strongly impacted their understanding of the tactually explored pictures. Their capacities of conceptualization (access to the perceptive and semantic dimensions of the pictures) were different, just like their movements of exploration carried out to attain a good understanding of the images. We also showed that some properties of the children’s explorations (duration, quantity of exploration, space apprehension) were directly related to the way the children interpreted what was represented in the pictures. Again, these spatiotemporal features varied as a function of the degree of visual handicap. From a fundamental point of view, we provided interesting information concerning the specificities of the haptic perceptive system of the VI children. From an applied point of view, our work enabled to elaborate practical instructions relative to the design of tactile albums and educational advices concerning the education of touch to be proposed to these children.

Utilising participatory reflection and action to develop a postgraduate qualification in visual impairment studies

Manis, Maesela January 2020 (has links)
Following the inception of the White Paper 6 in 2001 (Department of Basic Education, 2001), selected schools in South Africa have been transformed into inclusive schools, with the aim of enrolling all learners despite their (dis)abilities. Teachers however still seem hesitant to take care of this responsibility due to a variety of reasons. Against this background, the Department of Higher Education and Training, in collaboration with the European Union has undertaken an initiative focusing on the promotion of inclusive education policy implementation and teacher training in South Africa. As part of this initiative, the University of Pretoria was tasked to develop a postgraduate qualification in visual impairment studies. My study forms part of the broader funded project of the University of Pretoria. More specifically, my study focused on the process and value (or not) when utilising Participatory Reflection and Action (PRA) for the development of a qualification. Based on the assumptions that teachers and expert stakeholders in the visual impairment community would be able to co-conceptualise an advanced diploma for teachers, 17 schools were involved, situated in five South African provinces, with 255 teacher-participants. In addition, 50 expert stakeholders in the field of visual impairment participated in this study, which adopted a participatory research approach, implemented an instrumental case study design and utilised interpretivism as paradigm. For data generation and documentation, I relied on PRA-based activities, individual interviews, observation, field notes, a reflective journal and audio-visual techniques. Following inductive thematic analysis of the data that apply to the focus of my study I identified four main themes, with the related subthemes. These themes relate to utilising PRA to access research partners’ knowledge and expertise, value for participants of being research partners in a PRA process, value for personal and professional development of the participants and recommendations for future application of the PRA process. Findings of my study indicate that it is possible and beneficial to implement PRA when conceptualising a qualification. More specifically, PRA is suitable for accessing research partners’ knowledge and expertise when developing a qualification. PRA empowers participants to instil positive change and further equip themselves. / Thesis (PhD)--University of Pretoria, 2020. / Educational Psychology / PhD / Unrestricted

Lippe, Eliza Marcia Oliveira. January 2010 (has links)
The government's proposal that of inclusive education is based on curriculum adaptation, perfomed by the action of a multidisciplinary team that supports both the teacher and the commom room for students with disabilities, through monitoring, study and research order to include it and keep it on the commom network of education at all levels. Backed by precepts that consider the individual as dependent on social relations, the school should be seen as one of the bodies responsabile for this to occur, constituting a space of social interaction (SEESP/MEC, 2004). This study aims to investigate the perceptions of science teachers and classroom resources on visual impairment in relation to inclusion by the observation of teaching pratice in the presence of students included in the room classroom. The research and data analysis was perfomed to the methodology of qualitative research and discourse textual analysis. The results demonstrate the importance of communication that must occur between the teacher so that students can effectively learn the scientific content, and also that the specialist teachers unfortunately by too much activity in your daily journey ends up sometimes overlook the educational process with students, enabling that often happens in many occasions to strengthen, not pedagogical support needed to hel students / Mestre
