Acessibilidade no desenvolvimento de sistemas web: um estudo sobre o cenário brasileiro / A survey on the accessibility awareness of people involved in Web system development in Brazil

André Pimenta Freire 07 March 2008 (has links)
Universal access to content in Web based systems is an essential aspect to enable everyone to have access to it, regardless of disabilities or any other restrictions. Several studies indicate that, although federal legislation regarding to Web accessibility have been promulgated in many countries, accessibility is still an issue for many Web sites. The limited awareness of accessibility by people involved in Web development and the lack of appropriate use of development techniques in the development of applications have a deep impact on accessibility. A few surveys have been carried out to identify the main characteristics of Web developers regarding accessibility concepts and techniques for accessibility. However, the studies reported up to this date have only investigated the use of a restricted set of techniques by developers. Besides, they have not addressed the analysis of the correlation between the answers provided by the subjects and the accessibility level of their Web pages. The proposal of the work presented in this master\'s thesis is the development of a survey on the accessibility awareness and on the use of techniques for accessibility by people involved in the development of Web based systems. Automatic metric based accessibility evaluations on the Web sites developed by the subjects were carried out to support the investigation of the impacts that the issues investigated have on the Web pages accessibility and on the accessibility awareness. The survey was answered by 613 subjects from all Brazilian states. The results show that in Brazil the accessibility awareness is still very limited. Training people involved in Web projects on technical issues alone is not enough. It is necessary to promote a wider awareness of accessibility and of the problems people with different restrictions and abilities deal with when using the Web

Exploring the Web Accessibility for people with Dyslexia

Indal, Emma, Mavéus, Ellinor January 2019 (has links)
Five to eight percent of Sweden's population is diagnosed with dyslexia and almost twenty-five percent experience reading and writing difficulties. Ninety-four percent of Sweden's population uses the internet in all areas of life, from education and work to reading newspapers and gathering information from encyclopedias. From previous research, it is known that web accessibility is a problem for people with dyslexia, but not enough people take action. The world goes from analog to digital in today's digitalization, therefore it is important to make the digital content available and accessible for all kinds of people, regardless of disability or not. This study aims to get a deeper understanding, through a questionnaire, of how people with dyslexia and/or reading and writing disabilities experience the accessibility on websites today. The study identifies what obstacles these people face when they try to access information on websites and how the identified and analyzed obstacles could be used to create an easy-to-use-and-implement toolbar to help people overcome these obstacles.. To validate if the toolbar could be used on websites to customize how the information is displayed and thereby access the information easier, a usability test was conducted. When the user is included early in the process, it is possible to improve the prototype before it is released live and available for developers to implement on their websites. The usability test was conducted through a Think Aloud protocol and aimed to connect the end-users thoughts with their behavior while using the component. The result of the study shows that the majority of the participants do not think that many websites today are adapted for people with dyslexia and think websites should offer the ability to customize how the content is displayed on web pages without having to use browser extensions. The result also shows that the easy-to-use-and-implement toolbar includes functionality that will decrease these obstacles for people with dyslexia. You can also see that the previous research on colors, font style, font size, and line spacing is four of six categories the participants in this study see, as the biggest obstacles when they try to access information on websites today. What they also experienced was that the toolbar should include more choices within these categories to customize the toolbar for the individual person instead of a large group of people, which also is one of the suggestions for future research.

Web Accessibility in E-learning : Identifying and Solving Accessibility Issues for WCAG 2.0 Conformance in an E-learning Application

Lundqvist, Sebastian, Ström, Johan January 2018 (has links)
With the rise of e-learning and recent legislations of the European Union enforcing conformance to Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.0 for web applications of public sector bodies, the issue of identifying and solving web accessibility issues in e-learning applications is more relevant than ever. This thesis is based on a case study of a publisher of course literature whose intention is to improve the accessibility of their e-learning applications. The thesis contains a theoretical foundation on disabilities, e-learning and web accessibility including assistive technologies, the web accessibility guidelines WCAG 2.0 and the web accessibility evaluation method WCAG-EM. This theory is used for developing solutions to accessibility issues found in the e-learning applications and comparing accessibility with e-learning theory. The results are presented as concrete examples to be useful for developers of e-learning applications. It was found that there exist a few instances where accessibility and e-learning contradict each other, but the solutions to accessibility problems are most often not affected by the learning premise of the applications.

Byhlin, Victor January 2020 (has links)
The web accessibility directive has made web accessibility as a phenomenon a current issue. The concept of accessibility is used in web development to describe to what extent a product, a service or an environment is usable and navigable for people with certain needs or disabilities. Web accessibility involves the goal of making it easier for such persons to perceive, navigate, understand and contribute to the web (Kulkarni 2019). This study examines what practitioners in web development think is required to initiate accessibility on the web. The purpose is to reach a greater insight into what practitioners think is required to initiate web accessibility and what obstacles and problems they encounter during the process. The research question is: “what do web developers and interaction designers think is required to initiate web accessibility?”. The study is a qualitative, descriptive case study. The data collection is made through semi-structured interviews with consultants at the IT-company XLENT. The data has been thematized through coding and has been analyzed based on the theoretical framework, namely activity theory (AT). Problems observed are, among others, that web accessibility often is a low priority among clients, difficulties in explaining advantages and the importance of web accessibility and limited resources. The conclusion is that what is considered required is increased knowledge and awareness among clients and practitioners, more incentives to initiating web accessibility, pragmatic legislation, that web accessibility is prioritized from the very beginning of a project, more cooperation with people with disabilities during the process and more ready-made solutions in browsers.

Comparing Web Accessibility between Major Retailers and Novelties for E-Commerce

Xu, Jinmeng January 2020 (has links)
Purpose –Comparing the accessibility of e-commerce for General Merchandise, between major retailers and novelties, in the conformance of web accessibility guidelines, and the implementation of rich internet applications specifications. So that to figure out whether the differences exist between them, if so, what are the differences, and analyzing upcoming e-commerce and established e-commerce.  Method – The descriptive and quantitative case studies were used to evaluated 45 websites respectively from major retailers and novelties in General Merchandise of e-commerce, where sample websites were selected from Alexa’s rank lists. Then the WAVE tool, Accessibility Quantitative Metric (WAQM), and Fona assessment were applied for analyzing cases for representing the accessibilities and answering the research questions of purpose.  Findings – ARIA specifications as a kind of technological solution really had positive functions on web accessibility when only focusing on accessibility guidelines, because the novelty websites with less ARIA attributes resulting in lower accessibility levels generally, even though there were also many other elements that can affect accessibility.  Implications – In the main branch of General Merchandise, the degree of web accessibility in major retailer websites was better than that in novelties, which means as far as e-commerce is concerned, the accessibility of mature websites that had been established for a long time was contemporarily stronger than that of new websites with creative products.  Limitations – From the perspective of the sample, there were limitations in sample sources, size, websites languages, while in the technical aspect, the evaluation of dynamic contents just aims at keyboard navigation, and the tool of Fona assessment also had restrictions.

The municipal challenges of the accessibility act : A study of the challenges in compliance with the Swedish act on accessibility to digital public service within Swedish municipalities

Westin, Mia January 2022 (has links)
Digitalization in society is going fast and was accelerated further by the Covid-19 pandemic. By this, many people's everyday tasks were transferred to digital environments. This meant in Sweden that most new internet users in 2020 were people over the age of 75 and people with different types of disabilities. Due to this increase in digitalization and all these new internet users, accessibility online is a subject that has gained higher significance. Since September 2020, all Swedish municipalities' websites must be accessible by law. Municipalities have a great responsibility to make information and necessary services available to the public. The purpose of this study was to investigate how well municipalities succeed with their work with web accessibility as a consequence of the legislation in Sweden and identify where the municipalities meet concrete obstacles in order to comply with the law. The purpose was also to investigate how the work with web accessibility on municipal websites can be simplified, improved, or otherwise enabled for those who work with such issues in the municipalities. To fulfill the purpose, two research question was formed for the study: 1.     In the process of making municipalities’ websites accessible, which are the concrete obstacles that make the work difficult for those who work with such issues in the municipalities?   2.     How can the work with the accessibility of municipal websites be simplified, improved, or otherwise enabled for those who work with such issues in the municipalities? To answer the research questions, two methods were chosen, a web survey and in-depth interviews, which corresponds to a combination of a quantitative and a qualitative method. The web survey was sent out to all municipalities in Sweden with the focus to answer RQ1 and the in-depth interviews were conducted with two accessibility experts with the focus to answer RQ2. Several obstacles were identified relating to lack of resources, lack of competence, lack of understanding of the law and the interpretation of it, attitudes, and old technology. Solutions on how the work can be simplified for those who work with web accessibility were identified relating to attitudes, resources, competence, legislation, and consumer demands. The main conclusions were that even though a municipality comply fully with the law, it does not mean that the website is accessible for all users, hence the law is not comprehensive enough. It also shows that there are several aspects that makes it hard for the municipalities to comply with the law and that most of these aspects also are the areas that needs improvement for the work to be simplified for the municipalities.

Evaluating Features for Promoting Accessible Content in Content Management Systems

Westberg, Hannes January 2019 (has links)
As the web continues to evolve, so does our need for achieving an accessible web for people with disabilities. Content management systems (CMSs) have well observed accessibility problems with generated content, and in recent years, several features have been proposed in order to minimize or eliminate these problems. This study investigated CMSs in current use to find common accessibility problems and evaluated a set of features proposed by Acosta, T. et al. in 2018, targeting these problems. The study initially found a general lack of information, guidance and technical support provided by CMSs to editors promoting the generation of accessible content. The results indicate that even editors highly aware of accessibility may not be able to create accessible content due to the limitations of their systems. The study also received positive feedback towards the evaluated features from professionals, indicating that the features are of practical value and may help the editor by minimizing or eliminating common accessibility problems in content generated through CMSs.

Ruth, Diana 17 December 2009 (has links) (PDF)
Was bedeutet Barrierefreiheit im Internet?

Um auxílio à navegação acessível na web para usuários cegos / An accessible web navigation aid for blind users

Geraldo, Rafael José 19 September 2016 (has links)
Web Accessibility aims to enable that any individual may understand and interact with a Web page content, regardless of disabilities or other factors. Although there is a large number of research studies in this area, it can be noted individuals with some specific types of disabilities find it more difficulty browsing the Web, such as those who are blind. In order to minimize the problems faced by blind users when browsing the Web, the study reported in this thesis proposed an approach which consists in automatically extracting the navigation knowledge implicit in the visual presentation of a Web page and changing this navigation design to an optimized way to those users. For this purpose, the research started with a review of the papers related to the main problems faced by blind users when interacting to the Web, as well as the specific sets of accessibility and usability guidelines to minimize these problems, based on a systematic mapping study conducted on the topic. After identifying the problems and guidelines, the next step involved the development of a classifier based on the Naïve Bayes methods, considering three features commonly found in the design patterns of navigation menus, in order to automatically classify the links contained on each page into different classes relating to the navigation structures. After developed, the method was tested and assessed in governmental websites through an statistical analysis, showing a good success rate in its classifications. Based on the difficulties encountered during the first step of the research, the study proposed an interface model tailored to blind users who use the Web with the help of a screen reader. Based on the developed classifier, the study proposed an approach to automatically transform the browsing links classified by the method into an optimized navigation standard to screen readers. As a proof of concept, the following step involved a semi-automatic extraction of Web pages content, in order to transform this content to a new proposed interface model. In this context, was developed a prototype of the mechanism, named NavAux. This prototype was evaluated through a cognitive walkthrough. To this, were defined some tasks and the interface operation was performed with support of the JAWS screen reader. The results presented signs that the proposed approach can be considered a viable alternative to minimize the accessibility problems faced by blind users when browsing the Web.

Menus de navegação em aplicações Web para dispositivos móveis: questões de acesso e usabilidade / Navigation menus in Web applications for mobile devices: issues of access and usability

Antonelli, Humberto Lidio 21 December 2015 (has links)
The diversity of means to use the Internet, ensured by the growing upcoming of ubiquitous devices such as tablets and smartphones, has promoted research on adaptation of the content that used to be mostly targeted only to desktop platform into this new context now known as the mobile devices. Some of the elements such as the menus are designed to facilitate the usage of the website once they help at finding and using the information that the user looks for. However, most of the menus available on websites do not apply the mobile devices, nor provide users with interaction, which nearly disables the interaction with the mentioned devices. There yet must be added the profile diversity of the web content users. Some of these users, such as elderly people, find limitations that tend to hamper their access to web content on the mobile devices, once aging commonly represents both physical (visual, hearing and motor abilities) and cognitive (attention, memory and reasoning issues) impairment that directly interferes on the usage of the computing devices that do not portray adjustments to such audience profile. This paper aims at investigating the issues related to the adaptation of web contents into the mobile devices. We focused on the menus in order to reduce or eliminate the limitations elderly people could find while using the mobile devices. We initially analyzed different patterns and structure of menus, as well as the guidelines upon accessibility and usability involved in the menus designing process. Based on this analysis, we developed a metamodel that originated the AMenu language, in which all technical data upon accessibility and usability involved in the menus designing process was included. Then, we developed the AMeG tool in order to assess the language created under the development perspective. Based on this assessment, we developed of an adaption mechanism that uses the AMenu language to generate menus adapted to the mobile devices. We then run a study case with elderly people in order to assess the menus generated by the mechanism, based on the comparison with the original ones. The results demonstrated that the participants had a better performance in the interaction while using the menus generated by the mechanism rather than the original ones, since they spent 54% less time performing tasks and made 82% less mistakes compared to the original menus. We also verified a quitting average of 33% among the participants while performing the assigned tasks using the original menus. On the other hand, the results point out that all participants responded better to the approach developed in this study as they all managed to successfully finish all the assigned tasks.
