Increasing the Effectiveness of K-12 Stem Worshops Through Targeted Context and Creative TechnolgiesLopez, Melina 01 June 2022 (has links) (PDF)
Economic projections reveal a need for one million more Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) professionals over the next decade than the United States is producing at the current rate. As a result, STEM education is a major focus of recent legislation and funding in Congress as the number of STEM professionals is inadequate to support innovation and the ever-changing economy. In response to the urgent need for more competitive STEM professionals, there has been a widespread implementation of workshops, organizations, and school programs aimed at amplifying K-12 student STEM literacy and interest. Some programs are even created to specifically reach and attract women and unrepresented minorities to STEM. Despite the increase in outreach programs, they remain limited to a straightforward discussion of a narrow scope of STEM topics. Many workshops and programs continue to validate the positive impacts of utilizing hands-on projects but cease to inform about broader STEM applications through the exploration and integration of storytelling, culture, and community.
Professors and students from the Liberal Art and Engineering Studies program at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo founded the Seeds in STEM organization to develop K-12 STEM workshops that incorporate a participants’ culture and community in the learning process per a storyline that guides the participants through several STEM activities. This paper discusses the impact of adding a workshop activity that introduces motion capture technologies and their application to the Seeds in STEM workshop held on April 30th, 2022. The results collected from the activity via three forms of assessment demonstrate generally positive trends in the attitudes of the participants regarding STEM topics and the careers encompassed by STEM.

The effect of workshops on school management team's competence in inclusive education in the Capricorn District of LimpopoMaebana, Maite Elias January 2016 (has links)
Thesis (M.Ed. (Curriculum Studies)) -- University of Limpopo, 2016 / School Management Team (SMT) members struggle to accommodate learners with diverse learning difficulties as prescribed by the Education White Paper 6. This is despite the workshops, which are conducted to develop SMTs to accommodate learners with disabilities and practice Inclusive Education (IE) in their classrooms. The purpose of this study was to investigate the SMT’s competence in the implementation of Inclusive Education in the Capricorn District of Limpopo Province. The study followed a qualitative approach where a case study design was adopted. Two officials from the Inclusive Education section of the Department of Education and six SMT members from three schools in the Capricorn District of Limpopo Province were purposively selected to participate in the study. Data was collected through semi- structured interviews, observations and document analysis. Data was analysed through content analysis, and followed the Creswell’s model of data analysis. The results of the study were as follows: there is a lack of human and physical resources, duration of time taken for conducting workshops was too short, and the lack of follow-up programmes. Therefore, these results may imply that the current professional model of teacher development through workshops is not effective, and that new strategies are needed to improve teacher development programmes. The study suggests that further areas of research should include time allocation for conducting workshops on Inclusive Education, resources allocation and follow-up programmes. / National Research Foundation (NRF)

Our Community Chimes InBishop, Corinne, Doucette, Wendy 10 January 2025 (has links) (PDF)
In this edition of Practitioner Panel, we share comments from the graduate librarian community about key research skills librarians cover when providing course instruction, workshops, and research consultations; types of training offered for new faculty, adjuncts, and graduate teaching assistants; and some AI tools librarians are currently using and strategies for discussing AI use with graduate students. (Some responses have been very lightly edited for typos or clarity.)
After the questions and answers, we present overviews of two notable resources, adapted from responses to our Spring 2024 call for information about conference presentations pertinent to graduate librarianship. While we did not receive enough submissions to warrant a standalone “conference roundup” issue, we are pleased to share these two contributions as part of this issue’s Practitioner Panel.

The insertion of technologies has influenced the daily lives of people, this has brought positive and negative consequences, among the second mentioned is the blurring of cultural identity in children. That is why this study aims to design dance workshops to improve cultural identity in fourth grade primary school children. A descriptive-propositional design will be used, under a non-experimental quantitative approach, the sample is 20 students, selected with an intentional non-probabilistic sampling, with the result that more than 50% of the respondents are at a low and very low level in cultural identity. Therefore, dance workshops are proposed as a relevant solution. As a result, after applying the academic proposal, it is expected to achieve the improvement of the cultural identity of all the students participating in the workshops and that through dance they know and value their culture. The impact of this research is scientific, because of its novelty and because it gives rise to different upcoming research, educational by promoting the development of educational skills in educational and social agents because it contributes to society in general.

The essence and use of perfume in ancient EgyptByl, Sheila Ann 02 1900 (has links)
The ancient Egyptians were famous for their exotic and luxury perfumes in the ancient world, even having cities that specialised in perfume production in the Ptolemaic Period, when they exported these perfumes all over the Mediterranean. They produced these perfumes, and other scented preparations, from aromatic plants, fats and oils. The deities were fragrant beings, imbued with the divine essence, and perfume was considered by the Egyptians to be the sweat of the god Ra. Some deities were specially linked to perfume, one of the most important being Nefertem, god of perfume and of the primordial fragrant blue lotus flower. Incense was to the Egyptians the ‘eye of Horus’, burnt as an offering to the deities in temples. Aromatic plant material was stored in perfume/unguent ‘laboratories’, and perfumers’ workshops produced the precious perfumed oils and unguents, used in the funerary context, rituals, ceremonies, festivals and banquets. / History / M.A.

Pre- and post-test results of the cognitive functioning level of workers with intellectual impairment after the implementation of a structured activity programme in a protective workshopGoliath, Charlyn Delmarie 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MA)--Stellenbosch University, 2005. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Acknowledgement of the right to equal work opportunities for people with disabilities is
widely supported in South Africa. Several policy documents and laws have been
published since July 1993 and provide clear guidelines regarding equal opportunities for
people with disabilities.
A state subsidy scheme for protective workshops was introduced for the first time on
1 April 1997 (Operational Manual for Protective Workshops, 2001: 1). The purpose of
this subsidy scheme was to provide work opportunities for people who cannot enter the
sheltered or open labour market due to the effect of their disabilities on their daily
functioning. In March 2001, the Department of Social Development and Poverty
Alleviation in the Western Cape introduced a draft document, Operational Manual for
Protective Workshops. The aim of the manual focused on the development of the
worker role and economic empowerment of people with disabilities who work in
protective workshops.
Due to ignorance, fear and stereotyping, persons with intellectual impairment are being
unfairly discriminated against in society and at the workplace. With reasonable
accommodation, persons with intellectual impairment are able to demonstrate their work
ability and contribute equally in the workplace. Persons with intellectual impairment
contribute to the economy and society by means of their service in protective
workshops.
The aim of the study was to investigate whether the structured activity programme
implemented in a protective workshop in the Western Cape brought a change to the
level of cognitive functioning of workers with intellectual impairment as assessed by the
Allen Cognitive Level Screen (ACLS), with the purpose of making recommendations
regarding the sustainability and extension of the structured activity programme.
Pre- and post-tests of the workers' cognitive functioning were done to determine
whether the implemented structured activity programme had an effect on the cognitive
functioning level of the workers. The ACLS was used as measurement instrument and a
hypothesis was stated:
HO - There is no change in the level of cognitive functioning of the workers after
participation in a structured activity programme.
H1 - There is a change in the level of cognitive functioning of the workers after
participation in a structured activity programme.
The Functional Information Processing Model (FIPM) was used as a frame of reference
in the development of the structured activity programme for the occupational group. The
structured activity programme was implemented and after one year and six months a
post-test was done on the workers in the occupational group.
The null hypothesis was accepted as p=O.28.A 95% confidence interval was indicated.
The post-test indicated that there was no significant change in the cognitive levels of the
workers in the occupational group after implementation of a structured activity
programme. This could have resulted from the study sample being too small. Although
the change was not statistically significant. it indicated that learning did occur on an
Allen Cognitive Level (ACL) 3. It is recommended that the study to be replicated at other
protective workshops that may provide a bigger sample to confirm the amount of
learning that takes place.
in Suid-Afrika ondersteun.
keer beskikbaar gestel (Operational Manual for Protective Workshops, 2001: 1).
voorlopige dokument, Operational Manual for Protective Workshops, bekendgestel, wat
Die Allen Cognitive Level Screen- (ACLS-)toets is as 'n
aangetoon.
(ACL) 3 by die werkers plaasgevind.

Can young people develop and deliver effective creative anti-bullying strategies?Hickson, Andy January 2009 (has links)
Using action research within a critical paradigm framework the author investigated young people’s ability to develop a programme of work that raises awareness of bullying in schools. The research group was made up of six young people, to whom the author and other specialists offered anti-bullying and participatory training techniques. The group eventually designed their own anti-bullying activity programme, which they delivered in creative workshop style sessions to other young people in schools. The author located this research in critical enquiry, engaging the group in a self-reflective process that aimed to be democratic, equitable, liberating and life enhancing. This report is written in the form of a narrative and evaluates the author’s practice as an educative theatre practitioner. Central themes to this research are bullying, power, creative activity and youth participation. Schools, teachers and adults are often described as sucking out the creativity of young people and thus not allowing many of them achieve their full potential. In this context young people are often powerless to deal with some of the difficult issues in their lives such as bullying. The author suggests that peer support is a key strategy to deal with bullying in schools. The author introduces a new concept of peer support called external peer support, which he has evaluated against the current literature. The definition of bullying is explored in depth, as is its relationship to power. The author suggests peer support to be a key strategy in youth participation and ultimately helping youth empowerment.

This dissertation is an exploratory study of the concept of dialogical cultural mediation focused on reading skills workshops for the cultural protagonism of children and teenagers (0 to 18) at a shelter (in a city 80 kilometers from São Paulo). A collaborative research methodology was used so that data could be analyzed framed by the following categories: environments, actions, time, actors and polyphony. Results indicate that cultural mediations rooted in the singularization of children and teenagers empower them to break away from impersonal, cold and monotonous disciplinary practices. Resistant at first, all actors then engaged and enthused as the workshops were developed and reading became part of a dialogue among children, teenagers, instructors and the researcher herself. Actions could then be adapted to their expectations and specific interests, creating links with the mediator so as to connect elements in the books and readings with other cultural practices and activities. The act of reading was infused with new meanings as dialogical cultural mediation facilitated the singularization of children and teenagers. Readers and mediators became cultural protagonists a category founded on the encounter with the other.

With the reform of psychiatry in many new services substitutive mental health care as well as proposals for new treatment strategies in psychosocial rehabilitation to people in distress. Are possibilities of assistance that typify the mental health services, such as therapeutic workshops, among other designations. The workshops meet the mental health group activities for socialization and expression, emphasizing the uniqueness of the subject and subjectivity in psychological distress in space crafts, recreational and socio-economic factors. This paper describes the experience of the therapeutic effects of a workshop body, the Group FISIO, with users in psychological distress that attended the mental health service Center for Therapeutic Workshops and Labour (Núcleo de Oficinas Terapêuticas e do Trabalho - NOTT), in the years 2006 to 2008, a period where the service was operating in the municipality of Porto Ferreira, São Paulo. We sought to describe and report the experience of twelve users who participated in the Group as a treatment strategy for FISIO on the process of psychosocial rehabilitation. This workshop body favored the spontaneous demand for participation, applying techniques of stretching, relaxation exercises and playful to obtain body perception. The aim was to investigate the experience of this workshop, and describe their contributions to the psychosocial rehabilitation process. To this end, there was a case study, with the qualitative research. The methodological tools that were used to investigate and describe the contributions of FISIO were the notes in a field diary, in the medical records and records of service NOTT and semi-structured interview that asked about the bodily effects perceived before and after participating in the Group. To this end, the analysis of data collected were processed with the thematic analysis, the construction of categories that signaled the most significant speeches of the participants. The results discussed show contributions of the workshop the users body in psychological distress in the process of psychosocial rehabilitation, through the recognition of the body, improved self-esteem, autonomy and manual skills, recognized in implementing other workshops that made up the service, and showed subjective improvement in daily activities. The data from this study showed that the fact that the service is disabled changed to evaluate the possibility of a more plausible outcome in terms of psychosocial rehabilitation and recovery of citizenship. The discontinuity of a specific device for these people broke the assistance and the prospect of progress that the body workshop.

Letramento digital no ensino fundamental: a intencionalidade educativa de seu design pedagógico / Digital literacy in elementary school: the educational intentionality of its pedagogical designRios, Maria de Fátima Serra 27 September 2018 (has links)
The school context has been faced with demands of two orders. On the one hand, living in a world in which the presence of Digital Information and Communication Technologies (DICT) requires changes in the way of thinking and acting. On the other hand, traditional teaching, with predominance of expository transmission and evaluation based on the mnemonic process of curricular contents, goes through mismatch. This imposes on schools changes in pedagogical design supported by digital technological resources. Studies on Digital Literacy highlight the need to integrate DICT to the center of the teaching-learning process. However, studies on the subject involving immersion in school reality are reduced. In this space there is a confluence of different dimensions, which compose an important complexity to be considered, on the development of digital skills. Digital Literacy, as a process of developing skills to access, locate, select, organize information, build and share knowledge, aims at reaching possibilities of protagonism in solving problems. In this research, Digital Literacy was used as reference to the creation of a Pedagogical Design, whose educational intentionality attributed to the selection of the DICT brought contributions to the teaching-learning process. With an action-research nature, research data were collected at a full-time public school in the city of Cotia (State of São Paulo), the Fernando Nobre State School, during a one-year immersion. The Pedagogical Design was built collectively, resulting from the interrelations between new information, reflection and experiences of teachers and students. The urgency of its implementation was evident in the face of changes resulting from technological, economic and social developments. This research recognized the strategic importance of integrating DICT to broaden the practices of developing a digital culture. The Pedagogical Design under the perspective of Digital Literacy mobilized a Cycle of Educational Actions to develop the teaching skills of mapping, narrating, weaving and mediation. It contributed to the understanding of the existing challenges in the dimensions infrastructure, administrative-pedagogical, didactic-pedagogical and personal) It stimulated the development of Digital Literacy integrated with school planning, which expanded information search, communication and sharing abilities in multiple formats. The Pedagogical Design created allowed to expand abilities that have, as a result, greater sense and meaning on the appropriation of the DICT and the development of Digital Literacy. The use of blogs, social networks and different applications encouraged new teaching and learning practices, communication and interaction. It has expanded towards an emancipatory, autonomous, collective and ethical education expressed in school work. The faculty faces challenges to be updated, justified by the accelerated evolution of the DICT. For this reason, teacher education must be permanent, in order to stimulate the autonomy of the subjects, for the dialogical construction of knowledge, for the solutions to school problems. Immersion in the school reality represented fertile ground for research to understand the complexity of Digital Literacy in a school context.
