Musical Diversions at the Court of Louis XIV

January 1998 (has links)
During the carnival season of 1700, as some of the entertainments at the court of Louis XIV, there were presented seven mascarades at Marly, a châiteau near Versailles. The mascarade was a small-scale musical production that combined music and dance and was influenced by the ballet de cour and later the tragidie-lyrique. They were composed by André, Anne, and Pierre Philidor who were members of a family dynasty of wind players connected to the French court for several generations. Sources including the music, libretti, descriptive journal and diary entries, costume drawings, and related research allow reconstruction of the mascarades. These sources, especially the survival of the music in this collection, are important in that they display the type of musical/theatrical entertainment occurring at the court of Louis XIV. The thesis includes a modern edition of the music.

The abbé de Choisy (1644-1724) : a historical and critical study

Parish, Richard January 1974 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is to study critically the works of François-Timoléon, abbé de Choisy (1644-1724) against their historical background, and to present this study in the context or the author's life. It consists of an. introduction followed by seven chapters, the first of which is concerned with biography and bibliography, and the last of which forms a conclusion. In the introduction, I point out that I have chosen four works by Choisy, because of the light that they throw on the writer and his times, for more detailed study, but in so doing have also taken into con- sideration the rest or his output.

Casting glamour : En fenomenologisk studie om HBTQ-personers uttryck av sexualitet och kön i Final Fantasy XIV / Casting glamour : A phenomenological study about LGBT individual’s expression of sexuality and gender in Final Fantasy XIV

Andersson, Jacob, Kägu, David January 2018 (has links)
Online games allow players all over the world to interact with each other in new ways in virtual worlds. Through the creation of visual representations of the players they can communicate and express themselves beyond the limits of the physical world. In this phenomenological study we investigate how and if LGBT individuals experience that they can express sexuality and gender identity in the online roleplaying game Final Fantasy XIV and if the game community affects this experience. With qualitative methods players of Final Fantasy XIV were interviewed to capture this experience and through a queer theoretical lens critically examine the norms of the game. These experiences were also analysed from a dramaturgical perspective and a focus on identity theories. The results suggest that the player, despite restrictions, find new and creative ways of expressing their sexuality and gender in the game world. The players do this by constructing alternative identities and perform with their avatars on the stage that is the virtual world. The community is a major part of this as the accepting atmosphere is perceived to encourage openness.

January 2010 (has links)
The present work does an analysis of the intersemiotic intercourse established between the literary work Il Decameron (1348-1353), of Giovanni Boccaccio (1313-1375), and the namesake movie, of Pier Paolo Pasolini (1922-1975), regarding as the main objective to find out the artistic transcreation operated by Pasolini, above all, in what touches the metalinguistic constructions present in the literary text that are cinematographically retraced by the film maker. In the syncretic text, the metalanguage is intrinsically bound to the poetical, following Pasolini's own theoretical conceptions exposed in Empirismo Eretico (2000). The concepts in this book, like the famous cinema of poetry or the language of reality, guide the selection of other theorists, who help in the quest to prove that both Boccaccio as well as Pasolini make metalinguistic operations, as the narrative frames created by him expound the introspection of the artistic labour, working, this way, as authorial marks. Thus, the Decameron's two versions do not communicate only through the theme, but through the way their narratives are structured because Pasolini's work is built hereby cinematographic solutions which allude to Boccaccio's discourse construction / Mestre

L'image noire de Louis XIV : Provinces-Unies, Angleterre, France (1668-1715)

Boitel, Isaure 22 November 2014 (has links)
This doctoral dissertation studies the dark image of Louis XIV in the iconography of three European powers: France, United Provinces and England. The corpus rests on diverse sources : prints, medals, and even playing cards, all produced between the outset of the War of Devolution (1667) and the king’s death in 1715. These criticism and satire through imagery come as a reaction to the French military offensives as well as to the domestic policy led from Versailles, especially regarding religious affairs.First, we will analyse how this iconography started, by setting the context, identifying artists and sleeping partners, and by stating the targeted market. Then, we will focus on specific art works. As the target of these graphic attacks, Louis XIV is described as a bloody tyrant craving for a universal monarchy and as a follower of devious morals. A diachronic view allows us to observe the evolution of the accusations cast towards the king and to show the close relationship between sources and current affairs. Finally, we will analyse the rhetoric used by the accusers and focus on the aims and impacts of these defamatory images.Produced while the power of the press was emerging and then passed on through pamphlets and subversive songs, this iconography represents cutting remarks against surging images glorifying the Bourbon, and proves the growing politicization of Europeans at the end of Great Century and the dawn of the Enlightenment.

Using Research Driven Design to Reimagine Systems of Gender in Final Fantasy XIV

Bunyea, Leo Ryan 18 May 2020 (has links)
This study explores gender modeling specifically in avatar creation tools through the MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV. The design of systems is often limited by the experiences of those who build them. In the video game industry; this means that systems are often designed by white, cisgender, heterosexual men. This demographic does not represent the wealth of people who play games and are subjected to these systems. The needs of marginalized communities, especially queer communities, in terms of affordances and representation tend to be overlooked or forgotten. This issue is apparent in avatar creation tools which define the types of bodies and identities that are allowable in the world of the game. Using Brenda Laurel’s research driven design tactics, modifications to Final Fantasy XIV’s current system were realized through a paper prototype and constant input from a group of self-identifying queer players. Both the feedback from these queer players and the modifications made to the prototype were condensed into a series of suggestions for the creators of these tools. Ultimately, I discovered that there are three key features which vastly improve the affordances of character creators for queer players; the inclusion of pronoun identification, the identification of gender identity, and the separation of both of these options from the character’s physical appearance. Designers who implement these findings in their work will contribute to creating environments that support queer identities.
