Previous issue date: 2009-05-28 / Many languages, spoken by minority populations coming in contact with majority ones
are losing vitality. Additionally, several other languages have become extinct, and this
phenomenon is related to a cultural complexity involving a unique way to reflect on
reality and to become a part of it. The reasons for this are many, and in each case, they
act in different ways. Identifying these reasons can help to clarify the situation of a
given language, and, consequently, provide subsidies for (re)vitalization projects, given
that the understanding of the sociolinguistic situation may reveal what is behind the
many facets resulting from the predominantly asymmetric relationships among
unequally assigned political, economic and cultural powers among the involved
populations. In this sense, variations and changes in those languages are directly related
to changes that have taken place in the social and cultural medium and in the ecosystem
where those peoples live. Thus, both linguistic and extra-linguistic factors act on those
changes. According to several authors (Albó, 1988; Braggio, 1997; Godenzzi, 2000;
Nettle & Romaine, 2000; Romaine, 1995 among others), borrowings made by minority
languages which come in contact with dominant languages, are seen as signs that the
lexicon of that particular language is losing vitality, in view of the speed with which
those borrowings are incorporated. Thus, there is no time for the community to adapt
the terms by creating them their own language or to filter the new terms, adjusting
them to the structure of the native language. As stated earlier, the whole social, cultural,
political and economic structure of those peoples is being threatened. The Xerente
people are among those minorities whose language is being threatened. In this view, we
intend to give our contribution to Linguistics, to the study of indigenous languages and
to the Xerente Akwe people, by bringing to light the sociolinguistic situation in which
they find themselves, by studying the linguistic borrowings made from Portuguese to
their language. Currently, they are 3,100 individuals and their language is part of the Jê
family, Macro Jê language stock (RODRIGUES, 1986). They occupy an area in the
State of Tocantins, approximately 80 km from Palmas, the State capital. They are
distributed among 56 villages, and part of the population (approximately 10%) lives in
Tocantínia, the city which is closest to them. Therefore, the main goals of this
dissertation are: a) describing and analyzing the borrowings from Portuguese to Xerente
Akwe, in their linguistic and extra-linguistic aspects; b) making a contribution to the area of sociolinguistics, with the study of the borrowings, in a situation of close
linguistic and socio-cultural contact and c) thinking, along with the Xerente people,
about the phenomenon that is the object of this study and attempt to contribute to their
school education and to the vitalization of their language in the aspects that are being
most affected (Braggio, 2008). To attain these goals, we are using the method which
consists of applying words lists with visual aids divided into semantic fields (such as
transportation, tools and utensils, school, food etc., representing the new elements that
are being introduced in the indigenous culture), for the purpose of determining up to
what point these borrowings are being made on a regular basis, among languages that
come in contact with each other as changes that are unique to each language, as a
lexicon-expanding tool or if they are taking place in a disorderly fashion, thereby
contributing to the dislocation of the Xerente language, or both. Regarding linguistic
aspects, we have identified four types of borrowings: i) borrowings by creation; ii)
loanblends; iii) phonetic/phonological adjustments and iv) direct borrowings, each with
different degrees of structural complexity. The last ones are used exactly like they are
used in Portuguese, and thereby represent a prevalent force of the Portuguese language
as used by the speakers, in their effort to adapt them to the indigenous language. This
type of borrowing marks the real beginning of a language obsolescence, since it is
related to the speed with which the borrowings make their appearance. Additionally,
one can not separate borrowings from attitudes, since they are very important for the
linguistic policies that the Xerente people have been adopting. Results from the analysis
of extra-linguistic aspects have shown that some borrowings have become
aportuguesados , that is, they show Portuguese-like characteristics, which are closer or
identical to the forms used in Portuguese. They are more commonly found among the
children and the younger Xerente who live in the city and have more schooling. The
forms created with elements of the native language are more easily found among the
older population, living in the indigenous community with little or no schooling.
Generally speaking, the social reality of the Xerente, consisting of migration, internal
dispersion and schooling in the Portuguese language, as Braggio (idem) states, can be
considered as being one of the factors that can potentialize an intrusion of Portuguese
into the Xerente Akwe language. We believe that this study fills a gap by dealing with a
specific aspect of the sociolinguistic reality of the Xerente people, thereby providing
subsidies for future studies.
vários autores (Albó, 1988; Braggio, 1997; Godenzzi, 2000; Nettle & Romaine, 2000;
incorporadora.
realizados

Previous issue date: 2016-04-07 / This research aims to investigate the situation of communication in which the Akwẽ-Xerente
Deaf people are situated. In view of its execution, it has become relevant the identification,
the registration, the description and the analysis of the communicative situation in which they
are inserted, considering the reports of the research collaborators on the communicative
interactions between Deaf-Deaf and Deaf-listener, among other factors inherent to the
communication process of the Deaf in the cultural ambiance of this people. Regarding
research methodology, we considered making use of qualitative approaches (DENZIN,
LINCOLN, 2006; LÜDKE, ANDRÉ, 1986) and quantitative approaches, a bibliographical
research, surveys and a field study. For the generation of data, we adopted, in addition to the
bibliographical research, observation and personal conversations collected during the
Intercultural and Transdisciplinary Specialization offered by Universidade Federal de Goiás
(UFG) as well as the moments of my fieldwork in Akwẽ villages, and semi-structured
interviews with Akwẽ teachers attending that course. The theoretical foundations that
supported the research were, among others, the concept of deafness as a cultural difference
coined by Skliar (2005), rooted in socio-anthropological theories and theories of mediations
or culturalist theories of communication and the notions of utterances based on Bateson
(2002), Martin-Barbero (1991), Bakhtin (1997) and Freire (1987). As for sociolinguistic
analysis of Akwẽ-Xerente, we considered the data generated from the studies by Lopes and
Farias (1992), Guimarães (2002), Schroeder (2010), Cotrim (2011), Mesquita (2015) and my
field research. The survey recorded the presence of thirteen Deaf people between the ages 07
and 62 years old living in 10 villages of this people and the research evidenced the ways of
seeing and being in the world of the Akwẽ-Xerente people. It also showed the forms of
communication between Deaf-Deaf and Deaf-listener, as well as the access the Deaf have to
the cultural practices of their people. It is evident from this study the great possibility of
communicative interaction provided by the cultural practices of Akwẽ-Xerente and, on the
other hand, the need to further investigate the communication between Deaf-listener and
Deaf-Deaf, considering the spaces of cultural production and the use of signs as well as the
discussion of the "homemade signs" and the concept of language discussed by other studies
regarding the indigenous Deaf in Brazil. The access to knowledge, to the wisdom that is
already available to all in the cultural life-experiences of this people should also be considered
in the educational process by the means of the use of visuals, images and rituals that, when
authorized, can be experienced, learned and internalized by all without the exclusive use of
oralism necessarily. In this understanding, the appropriation and the dissemination by Akwẽ
sign language school brought by the Deaf are essential to expand the possibilities of
communication among everyone, to the cultural valorization and the improvement of selfesteem.
For the inclusion of Deaf people in Akwẽ schools, we should take into account all
these world records and all this form of communication. In this respect, while we highlight
the presence of Akwẽ signs, we ask ourselves about the existence of a Akwẽ-Xerente sign
language.
A pesquisa registrou a

Previous issue date: 2016-11-14 / CAPES - Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / This text is the result of a research conducted among the Akwe-Xerente, Jê-speakers and inhabitants of the state of Tocantins. It develops an analysis of how these people deal with otherness, and how shamanism and processes related to body and person construction emerge in this connection. The relationship with otherness is thought from the Xerente impetus to circulate beyond the boundaries of their villages, emphasizing the incorporation of knowledge, things and people as an inherent part of the Akwe condition. The notion of movement is one of the guidelines of this reflection: it is present in different ways in the daily life of these Indians. The text is part of a broader theoretical debate around the division, established in the anthropology of the South American lowlands, between Central Brazil and Amazonia. There is a special interest in the critics that have been made to this perception. The discussion we propose here dialogue with the approaches that criticize the image of Jê societies as self-sufficient and forming an isolated cultural complex.

Previous issue date: 2015-03-12 / Conselho Nacional de Pesquisa e Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico - CNPq / The Xerente inhabit the right margin of the Tocantins river, approximately 100 km north of
Palmas (TO), and the population comprises 3,600 individuals. After more than two hundred
years of contact with non-indigenous populations, the Xerente maintain their language and
unique cultural traits, a particular way to perceive and immerse themselves in real life. As a
consequence of this accelerated process of contact with non-indigenous populations, the
Xerente are now in a stage of high bilingualism (BRAGGIO, 2012), a situation that reveals
several phenomena, among them, one which is called code-switching (CS). Our work focuses
on this phenomenon. The goal is to attain a broad understanding of grammatical and
typological characteristics and the social and pragmatic motivations of CS in the Xerentespeaking
community. Data from the grammatical analysis, performed with the support of the
Matrix Language Frame Model (MLF) and 4-M (MYERS-SCOTTON, 1993a, 2002) models
show that, in the CS used by the Akwe, the matrix language (ML) is predominantly the
Xerente language, while the Portuguese language is relegated to the position of embedded
language (EL) within the bilingual projection of Complementizer (CP), the unit of analysis of
the MFL. Additionally, our data present samples of facts which previous studies applying the
MLF model have considered to be rare. It has to do with the isolated insertion of grammatical
morphemes presenting with the trace [-refers to grammatical information outside of Maximal
Projection of Head] and adverbs, which we see, along with the recurrent use of some names
and verbs from the Portuguese language (probably borrowings), as evidence of the advanced
degree of contact between the Xerente and the Portuguese languages. This reflects the
different weight of these languages in certain social domains. The configurations of this
contact are also revealed by the analysis of the sociolinguistic variables and the social and
pragmatic motivation of the CS, realized under the light of the Markedness Model (MYERSSCOTTON,
1993b), supported by Gumperz (1982) social and interactional approach and the
assumptions of the Ethnography of Communication (HYMES, 1972[1964], 1974, 1986). It is
then possible to determine that in the urban environment, among the younger population with
more schooling, there is a more intense and varied use of CS. In the topic variable analysis,
CS is mostly used in subjects regarding social domains related to the predominant
language/culture, exactly where there are instances of diglossic conflicts in which languages
find themselves in a situation of competitiveness, as pointed out by Braggio (2010). Among
the events analyzed, the ritual speech of the elders is, by far, that which presents the greatest
resistance to contact with Portuguese. However, in events that take place in the city, as well as
other events in which topics are related to that environment, we see CS being used more
frequently and presenting greater diversity/complexity. The phenomenon presents itself as a
unmarked or exploratory choice, precisely in these events, which gives Portuguese a series of
attributes that include the traces [+education], [+formality], [+authority], [+official] and
[+sociocultural status]. In view of that, we believe that a broad understanding of CS and of the
sociolinguistic configurations in which it takes place, can contribute to the academic
education of indigenous populations, in the sense that it will help in the preparation of
pedagogical materials. It will also help to establish goals for linguistic policies geared towards
providing vitality, and strength to the linguistic and cultural autonomy of the Xerente people.
Moreover, the paper also offers a contribution to sociolinguistics, to the study of languages in
contact and to the study of indigenous languages, most notably, the Akwe-Xerente language. / O povo indígena xerente (Jê) habita a margem direita do rio Tocantins, aproximadamente cem
características gramaticais, tipológicas e as motivações sócio-pragmáticas do code-switching
modelos Matrix Language Frame Model (MLF) e 4-M (MYERS-SCOTTON, 1993a, 2002)
[+formalidade], [+autoridade], [+oficial] e [+status sociocultural]. Diante disso, acreditamos
vitalização, fortalecimento da autonomia linguística e cultural do povo akwe. Ademais, o

Previous issue date: 2010-05-31 / The need to describe and document the languages threatened with extinction has been gaining
importance in the last decades, given the growing risks of cultural loss and the knowledge
accumulated by indigenous people. The purpose of continuity of each one of these languages
is ensured by actions based on the results of studies which focus on the description of the
sociolinguistic problem, as well as on the description and analysis of the linguistic aspects
which characterize the language of a determined linguistic family, since the death of a
language means, among many other things, an undetermined loss of the science of
Linguistics and, above all, the disrespect for the rights of these people to preserve their
immaterial richness. The present research has as objective to answer some questions regarding
the use of classifiers, terms of classes and names in classifying function as components of the
classifying system of the language Akwe-Xerente (Jê), spoken by the indigenous people of
the same name. The Akwe-Xerente add up to about 3,100 people and inhabit indigenous
lands in the region of Tocantinia, in the Tocantins State. The description of the system of the
Xerente classification is based on theoretical functional references for the recognition and
differentiation of some nominal radicals which may occur in the function of classifying or
organizing the classes which show common characteristics amongst the designated items such
as form, size, aspect, consistence and function. This research is structured in the following
way: In Chapter 1 are presented some proposals of elaboration of typology of sociolinguistics,
to outline the contact situation in which the Xerente language is found nowadays; the chapter
also gives a description of the methodology used to collect, select, and the process of
systematization of the data. These procedures are constituted of a sequence of steps based on
the methods of research for the Linguistic of field of synchronic base. In Chapter 2 an
exposition is made of the theoretical views used in the description and analysis of the aspect
of the nominal classifying system of the language. Chapter 3 shows the morphological
criteria used in the definition and delimitation of the concepts of the words in the Xerente
language, of the name, the compound name (compound word), and some characteristics of the
name referring to the possibility of marking the possession/possessor in a certain group of
Xerente names. In Chapter 4, the focus is in the description of aspects of nominal classifying
in relation to the nominal stems which act as terms of classes and names in classifying
function. This research is part of the LIBA Project Brazilian Indigenous Threatened
Languages: Documentation (description and analysis and sociolinguistic typology) and means
for offering subsidies in the linguistic range for the education program, as well as contributing
in the scientific recognizance of related aspects to the classifying systems and linguistic
category.
A descrição do

When considering the complexity that involves the formation of indigenous teachers and the teaching of Mathematics in indigenous schools, especially in relation to the interconnections of socio-cultural practices to educational and training activities, which was researched in this work, in which ways can we take the experiences from the socio-interactive activities of the Xerente indigenous peoples as a base for actions to teachers who teach Mathematics in communities of practice. The question that guided this research was, in what sense the socio-interactive activities, experienced by the Xerente indigenous peoples in communities of practice, can mobilize training activities within the discipline of Mathematics for teachers who teach Mathematics at an indigenous school. Hereby, we used the ethnographic qualitative type of research for the collection of information in two villages of Porteira settlement (Nrõzawi e Salto–Kripre) about socio-cultural practices affiliations of Xerente indigenous peoples in exogamous patrilineal halves Doi and Wahirê, and male belonging in the parties of big logs of painted buriti –ĩsitro–Htâmhã and Stêromkwa. The theoretical approaches taken in this research were the communities of practice, within the discipline of Mathematics and Ethno-Mathematics, as they propitiate a rereading of these cultural practices within a view that triggers further actions in and for the training of teachers, starting from the negotiation of the meanings of cultural practices of these indigenous. The results obtained throughout the analysis indicate that the Xerente indigenous communities, in their socio-cultural practices, share a sort of joint venture, a mutual commitment and a shared repertoire in order to constitute themselves as communities of practice. Therefore, Srêmtôwẽ indigenous school goes, in their didactic and pedagogical actions, in the direction of forming communities of practice from the collective collaboration of socio-cultural practices that contribute to the creation and recreation of new Mathematics learning.
