Hair, art, and identity

Coleman, Christina Blair 22 August 2012 (has links)
The purpose of this report is to discuss the artwork I have produced over the past three years while in attendance at The University of Texas at Austin. My artwork consists of sculptures, drawings, and installations that investigate certain aspects of the politics of black hair as they relate to my identity as an African American woman. These aspects are intimacy, beauty standards, and empowerment. I use hair and hair care products as my materials with which to create. I specifically focus on hair care products which I used when I was a young girl including Blue Magic hair grease and barrettes, products which for many black women are associated with childhood. My aim is to create artwork that changes hair and hair care products from mundane grooming tools into valuable cultural artifacts. / text

Dalla Zen, Laura Habckost January 2017 (has links)
This thesis is situated in the area of teacher education, focused on the relations among experience, culture and education. From betting in the possibilities of one knowledge directed to education, elaborated from the experience, this study had the objective of analysing cultural experiences, specifically in the constitution of an ethos docent, in other words, from the teacher way of being. Initially, it examines under which historical conditions the discourse on the cultural teacher education gain legitimacy today, as well as its dispersion in spaces that guide the teaching career, which are: academic researches, public policies and curricular directives. As a way of constructing a discursive memory of the conception of culture as a formative instance, directly related to the discourse in question, it rescues the concepts of Paideia, Bildung and Hallbildung for inscribing a particular conception about the cultural teacher education in the light of our time. The theoreticalmethodological movements, in turn, comprised the revision of historical data, from a perspective of genealogical inspiration, allied to the foucaultian analysis of discourse. The empirical material of the thesis consisted of portfolios of cultural experiences carried out by Pedagogy students, as well as interactions from the organization of a focal group with six of these students. Different authors make up the anchorage. The empirical material of the thesis is constituted of portfolios from cultural experiences, realized by pedagogy students as well as interactions deriving from the organization of one focal group constituted by six students. Different authors compose the theoretical anchorage that supported the discussions of the thesis, among which I highlight: Michel Foucault, Jorge Larrosa and Rosa Maria Bueno Fischer. The analysis that have been developed enabled the identification of cultural experiences implicated with the constitution of an ethos docent, in the means that: (1) unleash and enhance openness to negotiation processes, which often presupposes revising positions and accommodating new truths; (2) suggest a certain empowerment, not in the sense of a power takeover by the students, but as an extension of life possibilities; (3) in what they called the care of themselves, articulate ways of knowing and creating themselves, towards, perhaps, the good life of which ethics speaks.

In view of its execution, it has become relevant the identification, the registration, the description and the analysis of the communicative situation in which they are inserted, considering the reports of the research collaborators on the communicative interactions between Deaf-Deaf and Deaf-listener, among other factors inherent to the communication process of the Deaf in the cultural ambiance of this people. Regarding research methodology, we considered making use of qualitative approaches (DENZIN, LINCOLN, 2006; LÜDKE, ANDRÉ, 1986) and quantitative approaches, a bibliographical research, surveys and a field study. For the generation of data, we adopted, in addition to the bibliographical research, observation and personal conversations collected during the Intercultural and Transdisciplinary Specialization offered by Universidade Federal de Goiás (UFG) as well as the moments of my fieldwork in Akwẽ villages, and semi-structured interviews with Akwẽ teachers attending that course. The theoretical foundations that supported the research were, among others, the concept of deafness as a cultural difference coined by Skliar (2005), rooted in socio-anthropological theories and theories of mediations or culturalist theories of communication and the notions of utterances based on Bateson (2002), Martin-Barbero (1991), Bakhtin (1997) and Freire (1987). As for sociolinguistic analysis of Akwẽ-Xerente, we considered the data generated from the studies by Lopes and Farias (1992), Guimarães (2002), Schroeder (2010), Cotrim (2011), Mesquita (2015) and my field research. The survey recorded the presence of thirteen Deaf people between the ages 07 and 62 years old living in 10 villages of this people and the research evidenced the ways of seeing and being in the world of the Akwẽ-Xerente people. It also showed the forms of communication between Deaf-Deaf and Deaf-listener, as well as the access the Deaf have to the cultural practices of their people. It is evident from this study the great possibility of communicative interaction provided by the cultural practices of Akwẽ-Xerente and, on the other hand, the need to further investigate the communication between Deaf-listener and Deaf-Deaf, considering the spaces of cultural production and the use of signs as well as the discussion of the "homemade signs" and the concept of language discussed by other studies regarding the indigenous Deaf in Brazil. The access to knowledge, to the wisdom that is already available to all in the cultural life-experiences of this people should also be considered in the educational process by the means of the use of visuals, images and rituals that, when authorized, can be experienced, learned and internalized by all without the exclusive use of oralism necessarily. In this understanding, the appropriation and the dissemination by Akwẽ sign language school brought by the Deaf are essential to expand the possibilities of communication among everyone, to the cultural valorization and the improvement of selfesteem. For the inclusion of Deaf people in Akwẽ schools, we should take into account all these world records and all this form of communication. In this respect, while we highlight the presence of Akwẽ signs, we ask ourselves about the existence of a Akwẽ-Xerente sign language.

An exploration of the intercultural competence and the cross-cultural experiences of educational psychologists in the United Kingdom

Anderson, Aaron January 2018 (has links)
The United Kingdom (UK) is becoming increasingly diverse (Office for National Statistics, 2013). Educational psychologists in the UK will need to feel competent in providing services to an increasingly multicultural population. This research study used a mixed method, two-phase, sequential, explanatory study design to explore the self-perceived intercultural competence of UK educational psychologists and trainee educational psychologists (EP/Ts). The study also explored EP/Ts experiences of working with culturally diverse populations. The first phase of this research study used an online adapted version of the MCCTS-R (Holcomb-McCoy & Myers, 1999; Munoz, 2009), and the second phase built upon the first phase with follow-up semi-structured interviews, analysed using Braun & Clarke's (2006) thematic analysis. The results of this research study present a breadth and depth of information. EP/Ts generally perceived themselves to be competent to work cross-culturally with particular areas of competence including knowledge of assessment bias, poverty effects, and positive attitudes towards diverse cultures. EP/Ts also reported areas of lower competence including theories of racial/ethnic identity development, limited experiences of community work and limited knowledge of community resources. However, EP/Ts perceptions about development needs depended upon their awareness. The process of participating in the study raised awareness of gaps in knowledge and limitations in practice. The study concludes with a discussion of implications for the practice of EP/Ts.

The psychological, social and cultural experiences of undergraduate international students at the University of Limpopo (Turfloop Campus) : an afrocentric perspective

Hlokwe, Joy Katlego January 2019 (has links)
Thesis (M. A. (Psychology)) --University of Limpopo / This research investigated the psychological, social and cultural experiences of undergraduate international students at the University of Limpopo (Turfloop Campus). The study was qualitative in nature with an exploratory research design. The research made use of purposive sampling. Data was collected through focus groups as it was an appropriate tool for collecting the in-depth experiences of international students registered at the University. There were four focus groups with six participants in each so the overall sample was twenty-four. The researcher sampled twelve females and twelve males to ensure gender representivity. Afrocentricity was used as theoretical framework underpinning the study. The data were analysed using Thematic content analysis (TCA). The following themes emerged out of an interpretation of data: Motivation; Discrimination; academic challenges; language barriers; sense of belonging; homesickness; avoidance, acculturation and shared African culture. International students experienced many challenges which resulted in loneliness and isolation. They also used negative defence mechanisms in order to cope in the new environment. Results indicated that there are divisions in terms of culture (both social and academic) in the University environment caused, in part, by the colonial partition of Africa. Conversely, elements of African culture that have survived the onslaught of colonialism (and in South Africa, apartheid) help bind international and peer host country students (and outside communities) together.

[en] DESIGN AND CROSS-CULTURAL EXPERIENCES: A STUDY ABOUT THE BROTHER CARIOCA COLLABORATIVE NETWORK / [pt] DESIGN E EXPERIÊNCIAS INTERCULTURAIS: UM ESTUDO A PARTIR DA REDE COLABORATIVA BROTHER CARIOCA

DANIEL VASSALLO CASTRO 19 October 2020 (has links)
[en] Favored by digital technological advances, universities that pursue academic excellence are increasingly investing in cooperation networks, in the internationalization of education, and in international mobility programs, as a distinguished way to produce knowledge. This research is dedicated to the study of cross-cultural exchanges among international exchange students, made available by digital technologies and was guided by the question: how can Design facilitate cross-cultural experiences among international exchange students through the use of digital technologies? In this context, it is brought as the object of this study the project Brother Carioca, an initiative that emerged at PUC-Rio, which aims to assist in the process of adaptation and integration of international and local students that are going through a period of academic exchange, and foster cultural exchanges. The research adopted a descriptive methodology, with a qualitative approach. After a literature review on Service Design, intercultural practices, Generation Z and the impacts of media convergence on contemporary society, considerations were made and a field survey was carried out with the members of the Brother Carioca project. This research offered data that grounded the elaboration of a pilot experiment, a dynamics thought to provide intercultural experiences to the members of this network, in a digital environment. The articulation between the theoretical concepts addressed in this dissertation and the analysis of experiment conducted has relevance in the realm of discussions about the possibilities of Design s contribution to society, and for the formation of individuals better prepared to deal with the complexity of the world in which we live, where cultural encounters take place in profusion, and in which social interactions are increasingly mediated by digital technologies. Final considerations of the research indicate that Design can act in many ways to facilitate intercultural experiences among international exchange students through digital technologies, and that this is a fertile field that opens up for further investigations.

Educational and socio-cultural challenges of immigrant students in a South African school

Adebanji, Charles Adedayo 17 May 2011 (has links)
This research set out to explore the educational and socio-cultural experiences of DRC immigrant students in South African schools. Utilising a qualitative case study approach, the study attempted to provide a glimpse of the lived experiences of DRC immigrant students inside South African schools by exploring the following aspects: (1) academic performance, (2) schooling experiences, (3) linguistic disposition, (4) acculturation experiences and (5) how the students constructed their identities within South African society. The theoretical framework applied to this study was threefold in nature, namely Cultural Ecological Theory, Culture-Centred Theory and Critical Race Theory. The Major findings emanating from this study were: First, Cultural Ecological Theory could not explain the low academic performance of DRC immigrant students. Second, DRC immigrant students experienced acts of prejudice, isolation, linguistic adjustment incapability and xenophobic attacks. Third, acts of racism were prevalent at the school because teachers who taught them brought in African languages to explain lessons in class to indigenous students at their expense. Fourth, they were confronted by disrespectful modes of behaviour emanating from indigenous students to teachers. Fifth, the opportunity they had at the school, in terms of having access to education without being able to pay tuition fees, likely became their source of low academic achievement. The school had rapid turnover of teachers because the school governing body could not afford to pay additional teachers. Sixth, the students were exposed to uncommon modes of behaviour originating from indigenous students, in terms of gambling and smoking at the school. Seventh, they were exposed to display of weapons by indigenous students. Eight, the incorporation of culture into their academic work at school seemed to enhance their focus on learning. Ninth, they could not commence acculturation and identity negotiation in mainstream culture. / Dissertation (MEd)--University of Pretoria, 2010. / Curriculum Studies / unrestricted

To this end, the letters that these subjects sent to the Intervener were investigated. The research seeks to understand, in light of theoretical support from social and cultural history, the ideas, beliefs, values, and cultural identities of the writers themselves, acquired through their experiences and cultural, economic and political lives were determining factors in reinterpreting the Intervention government discourse, and, overall, within the limits allowed by their possibilities, allowed them to negotiate with said government. Notions such as justice, law, and valuing of the family, education, labor and laborers and natural resources recur in the reports from these petitioners with new nuances and different political meanings in efforts to achieve their objectives / O objetivo deste trabalho foi discutir como diversos segmentos sociais, pela ótica de seus efeitos, vale dizer, como homens e mulheres, moradores dos espaços urbano e rural, em diálogo com o Governo, vivenciaram a experiência política em seu cotidiano frente às propostas reformistas da primeira Interventoria de Magalhães Barata (1930-1935) no Pará.
