An ODE solver for constrained state spaces: with applications to hybrid-system simulations

This solver locates the points where any of the states go outside of the constraining set, and then, transfers the control from the continuous time ODE to the function governing the behavior of the system on the boundaries of the constrained set. O nosso objetivo neste trabalho é examinar em que medida a psicanálise está presente na principal obra de Italo Svevo, La coscienza di Zeno, abordando as concepções psicanalíticas empregadas no texto, diretamente ou em variados graus de transfiguração, e verificando se surgem tensões relevantes em relação a elas. O campo de atuação da psicanálise é muito amplo, de forma que nos restringimos basicamente a dois setores da sua atuação que julgamos cruciais para o exame proposto. O principal para o nosso trabalho é aquele no qual ela se constitui como sistema de compreensão do psiquismo: pretendemos determinar qual é o uso literário de tal sistema no romance, tanto na construção dos seus personagens quanto na constituição da sua narração. Também é importante para o nosso trabalho que levemos em consideração a psicanálise como método terapêutico, principalmente ao analisarmos o último capítulo do livro, no qual o protagonista Zeno efetivamente é psicanalisado pelo doutor S. e o processo de cura torna-se de grande relevância. / Our goal in this paper is to examine the extent to which psychoanalysis is present in the main work of Italo Svevo, La coscienza di Zeno, addressing psychoanalytic concepts used in the text, directly or in varying degrees of transfiguration, and verifying that arise relevant tensions about them. The scope of psychoanalysis is very broad, so basically restricted ourselves to two sectors of its operation that we consider crucial for the proposed examination. Central to our task is its operation as psyche understanding system: we intend to determine what the literary use of such a system in the novel, both in the construction of his characters as in the constitution of his narration. It is also important for our task we take into account the psychoanalysis as a therapeutic method, especially when we look at the last chapter of the book, in which the protagonist Zeno is actually psychoanalyzed by doctor S. and the healing process becomes highly relevant.

Mon travail porte sur la construction d'une expérience d'électrodynamique quantique en cavité visant à réaliser un long temps d'interaction entre des atomes, portés dans des états de Rydberg circulaires, et des photons confinés dans une cavité micro-onde supraconductrice. Une source d'atomes froids génère un jet vertical d'atomes lents, traversant le mode de la cavité, avec une vitesse moyenne de 12 m.s$^{-1}$. Ainsi, nous obtenons un temps d'interaction atome-champ de l'ordre de la milliseconde. Il devrait permettre, en particulier, l'implémentation de l'effet Zénon quantique dynamique (QZD) sur le champ. Cette dynamique non-classique est un outil puissant, permettant la manipulation cohérente de l'état du champ et la synthèse de superpositions arbitraires d'états quasi-classiques de Glauber. Sa mise en oeuvre nécessite une perturbation, faisant office de mesure, affectant seulement la cavité quand elle contient un nombre de photons $n_{0}$ choisi. Nous mettrons à profit le long temps d'interaction dont nous disposons afin de résoudre le spectre des états de l'atome habillés par le champ. L'anharmonicité du spectre vis-à-vis du nombre de photons permet une mesure sélective sur l'état de Fock $n_{0}$. Nous décrivons dans ce travail les premiers résultats expérimentaux attestant notre capacité à obtenir un long temps d'interaction. Nous présentons des données spectroscopiques résolvant les transitions associées aux états habillés correspondant à des nombres de photons allant de zéro à quatre et ce pour divers états du champ. Nous quantifions la sélection du nombre de photons obtenue à partir de telles mesures. Ces résultats ouvrent la voie à l'implémentation de la dynamique de Zénon. / The subject of my thesis was the construction of a new cavity quantum electrodynamics (CQED) setup. This setup allowed us to achieve a long interaction time between circular Rydberg states and a few photons confined inside a high-finesse supraconductor cavity. A cold atoms source produces a slow atomic beam of atoms with a mean velocity of about 12 m.s$^{-1}$ wich cross the cavity. With a few milisecond interaction time we are able to perform quantum Zeno dynamics (QZD) on the field. This evidently non-classical dynamics constitute an elegant tool to manipulate and synthetize arbitrary superpositions of quasi-classical Glauber states. Thanks to the anaharmonisity of the spectrum this can be achieved $via$ a probe pulse used for measurement, providing in a binary way the complete information to decide if there are $n_{0}$ photons in the cavity or not. Thanks to our long interaction time we are able to resolve the dressed states. In this work we describe the first results attesting our abily to achieve a long interaction time. Particularly, we report a long Rabi vacuum oscillation and the spectrum of the dressed states for different cavity fields. Finaly we characterize the efficiency with wich we can select a Fock state using the interaction with only one atom. This thesis paves the way to study QZD on the cavity field.

Dynamique Zénon quantique en électrodynamique quantique avec circuit / Quantum Zeno Dynamics in 3D Circuit-QED

Cette thèse présente le travail expérimental effectué pour observer la dynamique quantique de Zénon (QZD) dans une architecture 'circuit-QED' tridimentionnelle fonctionnant à très basse température. Dans cette architecture, un circuit supraconducteur de type transmon, jouant le rôle d'un atome artificiel, est couplé au champ électromagnétique d'une cavité microonde. Les niveaux d'énergie de l'atome et de la cavité sont alignés d'une nouvelle manière, afin de manipuler les états de Fock individuels de la cavité, tout en minimisant sa non-linearité Kerr induite par le transmon. La dynamique Zénon est obtenue en pilotant classiquement le champ de la cavité, tout en excitant fortement une transition inter-niveaux d'énergie du transmon, conditionnée à un état de Fock particulier. Ce forcage maintient la population de l'état de Fock à zéro, et conduit à la dynamique Zeno. Cette dynamique est observée par mesure de sa fonction de Wigner à intervalles de temps réguliers, soit par tomographie de Wigner, soit par tomographie quantique standard et reconstruction de la matrice densité. Nous observons trois exemples de QZD, et analysons la décohérence observée à l'aide simulations quantiques du système. / This thesis presents experimental work aimed at observing the quantum Zeno dynamics (QZD) in 3D circuit-QED, where an artificial atom, consisting of a superconducting circuit called a transmon, is coupled to the electric field of a microwave cavity resonator. The transmon and resonator energy levels are aligned in a novel way enabling the manipulation of individual Fock states of the cavity, while minimizing its transmon-induced Kerr non-linearity. We induce the QZD by displacing classically the cavity field while continuously driving strongly a transmon transition specific to a particular Fock state, which keeps this Fock state population at zero. The QZD is then observed by measuring the Wigner function of the fields at regular time intervals, either by Wigner tomography or standard quantum tomography and reconstruction of the density matrix. We observe three examples of QZD, and analyze the observed decoherence with the help of quantum simulations of the system.

No / We show that the multidimensional Zeno effect combined with non-holonomic control allows one to efficiently protect quantum systems from decoherence by a method similar to classical random coding. The method is applicable to arbitrary error-inducing Hamiltonians and general quantum systems. The quantum encoding approaches the Hamming upper bound for large dimension increases. Applicability of the method is demonstrated with a seven-qubit toy computer.

O processamento de informação quântica requer medidas, muitas vezes precedidas devoluções unitárias. Uma descrição realista de um computador quântico também deve levar em conta que o sistema interage com um ambiente externo - distinto do observador - que o remove de sua evolução ideal, gerando erros. Neste trabalho, fazemos um estudo da dinâmica de sistemas quânticos observados múltiplas vezes ou continuamente, enquanto interagem com ambientes externos. Para tanto, empregamos uma equação mestra híbrida, que permite modelar uma interação contínua e markoviana do sistema com o medidor, enquanto o ruído do ambiente apresenta características não markovianas. O estudo da dinâmica de uma medida contínua ruidosa revela que o sistema melhor preserva suas populações iniciais quando é realizada a medida de uma observável que não comuta com os operadores do ruído produzido pelo ambiente. Estes resultados, já conhecidos para o caso simples de um qubit de memória interagindo com o vácuo, são generalizados para uma temperatura inicial superior a zero e para um qubit submetido a uma porta quântica. A universalidade destes fenômenos de preservação da população inicial permite fazer analogia com o efeito Zenão quântico. Mantendo o mesmo formalismo, mas adaptando a interação com o ambiente para descrever um decaimento verificamos que o efeito Zenão quântico é observado para acoplamentos fracos com o ambiente. Tratamos também de como tal conhecimento sobre a preservação das populações pela medida auxilia na elaboração de melhores formas de preservar a informação em códigos quânticos. Com o auxílio da teoria das medidas fracas, propomos um possível método experimental simples para o teste da validade dos modelos de descrição de medidas contínuas. Com este estudo da dinâmica de uma medida quântica, esperamos elucidar questões de ordem prática no processamento de informação quântica, assim como ajudar no melhor entendimento de questões fundamentais, como o postulado da medida. / The processing of quantum information requires measurements, often preceded by unitary evolutions. A faithful description of a quantum computer should also take into account that the system interacts with an external environment - other than the observer - that removes it from its ideal evolution, causing errors. Here, we study the dynamics of quantum systems observed multiple times or continuously, while they interact with external environments. To do this, we employ a hybrid master equation, which allows us to model a continuous, Markovian interaction between the system and the measurement apparatus, while the environmental noise presents non-Markovian features. This study of the dynamics of the noisy continuous measurement reveals that the system better preserves its initial populations when the observable measured does not commute with the environmental noise operators. These results, already known for the simpler case of a memory qubit interacting with vacuum, are generalized for an initial temperature above zero and a qubit undergoing a quantum gate. The universality of these phenomena of preservation of the initial populations allows an analogy with the Quantum Zeno Effect. Keeping the same formalism, but adapting the environmental interaction to describe a decay, we verify that the quantum Zeno effect is observed for weak coupling with the environment. We also deal with how the knowledge about the preservation of the populations by the measurement helps in creating better ways to preserve the information in quantum codes. With the help of the weak measurement theory, we propose a simple experimental method to test the validity of models that describe a continuous measurement. With this study of the dynamics of a quantum measurement, we hope to help solve practical issues in quantum information processing, as well as provide greater insight into fundamental questions, such as the measurement postulate.
