Silva, Virginia Macedo de Souza 25 July 2014 (has links)

No. of bitstreams: 1 arquivototal.pdf: 1933222 bytes, checksum: a5468415ed69d69b97e184f7629ec4a0 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2014-07-25 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / The imagery organizes the images produced by homo sapiens in their anthropological path. This process occurs in psychophysiological level interaction with the cosmic environment and cultural, or vice versa. In this process, the imagination has the function of euphemization, that's why man creates images and symbols to mediate the harsh reality of time and the inevitability of death. Regarding the phenomenon "population in street situation", it is understood as being a group of people that lives in the streets and of it, usually, of their own will, or for reasons beyond his will. Crisscrossing these two concepts, this study aimed to analyze the symbolic images produced by people on the street to identify their religious imagery. The research subjects are housed in Casa de Acolhida of the City of Joao Pessoa and people living on the streets at the Mercado do Peixe of Tambaú in João Pessoa-PB. As a theoretical contribution, we used the General Theory of the Imagery (GTI) developed by G. Durand who supported the analysis of the images. We also seek the input of Discourse Analysis (DA) of the french line, with the concepts espoused by Foucault. The study was developed from the fieldwork that is one of the designs of the qualitative method. The research instruments were the Life History of the deponents and the implementation of a semi-structured interview, which allowed the collection of data relating to the religious imagery of the people on the street. In developing the survey, we could understand the formation of religious images from reflexology and arquetipology; we understand that modern man has the need of (re)encounter with the sacred, possibly, because spirituality is part of its constitution. The study results indicated that the religious imagery of the people on the streets in João Pessoa-PB features a convergence of daytime and nighttime images, since these images pointed upwards, towards the light and at the same time, indicated fall. These images are typical of the antithetical scheme - Daytime Conditions. On the other hand, the images converged to the center, to the intimacy of the house and the cup that are the expression of the euphemization of negative images from living on the streets. The religious imaginary the people in street situation analysis here unveiled, still, the religion an under prospective prism regarding the search for better days and a resignation about your own destiny. In this connection between utterances, we found the religious discourse crossed by syncretism and by pluralism with greater emphasis on images of Christianity.

Pour une géographie du cosmopolitisme autour du boulevard Saint-Laurent : mises en récits, nostalgies patrimoniales et constructions territoriales / For a geography of cosmopolitanism around boulevard Saint-Laurent : narrating, heritage nostalgia and producing territoralities

Poulot, Marie-Laure 01 December 2014 (has links)
This thesis questions the geography of cosmopolitanism, through the study of narratives, practices and representations around Saint Lawrence boulevard in Montreal. The street represents a divide between the “two solitudes” – the French-speaking and the English-speaking areas -, but also a bond, a passage and melting place, where immigrants settled during the 20th century. This research is based on field studies - combining observation and interviews. It also relies on studies of planning documents, reports and literature. In this former immigration corridor, three aspects of cosmopolitanism are converging, competing and sometimes overlapping: a political and identity-led cosmopolitanism, a consumerist cosmopolitanism, and a day-to-day experienced cosmopolitanism. Several scales of power operate on the boulevard (districts, municipality, provincial and federal government) so that one can read in diversity policies and heritage designations. The boulevard is also a lever for branding strategies: while “ethnic” neighborhoods clearly highlight the assets of cosmopolitanism, public and private real estate developers keep a low profile on that front in the Quartier des Spectacles. At any rate, these neighborhoods are not only about communication and branding: they are also daily experiences, commuting and hustle for cultural communities and many other inhabitants. The boulevard is therefore a space of urban experiences, that gives birth to a form of everyday cosmopolitanism, which is underpinned by venues, atmospheres and time specificities. This notably materializes through key people and special venues in time, such as festivals or walking tours.

On and Off the Street and Somewhere in Between: Identity Performance Among Adolescents Living On (and Off) the Streets of Lima, Peru

January 2011 (has links)
abstract: In this dissertation I present data gathered from an eleven-month qualitative research study with adolescents living and working on the streets of Lima, Peru. Through the pairing of photovoice with participant observations, this work incorporates distinctive methodological and theoretical viewpoints in order to complicate prevailing understandings of street life. In this dissertation, I examine the identities that children and adolescents on the street develop in context, and the ways in which photography can be a useful tool in understanding identity development among this population. Through a framework integrating theories of identity and identity performance with spatial theories, I outline how identity development among children and adolescents living on the street is directly connected to their relationships with the urban landscape and the outreach organizations that serve them. The organizations and institutions that surround children on the street shape who they are, how they are perceived by society, and how they view and understand themselves in context. It is through the interaction with aid organizations and the urban landscape that a street identity is learned and developed. Furthermore, as organizations, children and adolescents come together within the context of the city, a unique street space is created. I argue that identity and agency are directly tied to this space. I also present the street as a thirdspace of possibility, where children and adolescents are able to act out various aspects of the self that they would be unable to pursue otherwise. Weaved throughout this dissertation are non-traditional writing forms including narrative and critical personal narrative addressing my own experiences conducting this research, my impact on the research context, and how I understand the data gathered. / Dissertation/Thesis / Ph.D. Educational Leadership and Policy Studies 2011

Gente-caracol : a cidade contemporânea e o habitar as ruas

Gomes, Rita de Cássia Maciazeki January 2006 (has links)
The axes of reflection in this paper are the Contemporary City and Street-Dwelling. Our starting point is the people who are in street situation, but it is our understanding that one cannot isolate the study of the street population without expanding the context to the city and the concept of street-dwelling. We tried to investigate how the process of subjectivation of people in the urban space of the contemporary city takes place, specifically regarding those who live in the streets. Based on the assumptions of interventional research originated from the Socio-institutional Analysis, we established what we called interventional meeting with the street population. We tried to bring to the fore a reality that we are not familiar with; and often causes the population in street situation to be viewed in a prejudiced, stereotyped and stigmatized way. Therefore, we widened our scope to present speeches, discourses, texts, talks and dialogues with our interlocutors, in the attempt of mapping out the relationships that occur in the urban space. Thus, there are two ways one can understand the proposition "street dwelling": as a space for interacting; for meeting; a polis – a space to reflect on life; to relate to one another; to build quality life alternatives for all and not just for some. And also as a shelter, a refuge for those who do not live within four walls and use the streets as a home. The street-dwelling concept bears a notion that we should breach the walls in our relationships to live with otherness; to open up to a multiple city; a city of connection, of life.

Torres, Samantha January 2016 (has links)
This study aims to reflect about the work of the street theater groups, considering its as a means of radical communication, and to analyze what kind of discourse and actions are made by these groups and what the political effects of this practice. The idea of "political" concerns the origin of the word polis (city), and Ithka, (that which refers to ...), that is political in the sense of all that refers to the city, understood as a social life, and the human being constructed by such means and in constant relation with the same. The focus was the analysis of groups aimed at making art with a social debate function by placing alongside practices and discourses against hegemonic. This study universe, relates to the theory of Radical Media. The methodology used was cartography, and the materials used were: interviews with the public, interviews with group members, materials provided by groups and materials collected from observation of the presentations, in addition to the field diary. The groups of theather analyzed: A Tribo de Atuadores Ói Nóis Aqui Traveiz, Cambada de Teatro em Ação Direta Levanta Favela and the Grupo Trilho de Teatro Popular, all situated in the city of Porto Alegre in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. Finally, this study gives opportunity to visualize other forms of communication and stocks amid a city that is engendered from certain discourse that create exclusions and inequalities.

Santos, Ananda Andrade do Nascimento January 2016 (has links)
The present research aims to follow the trajectory of individuals active in the scene of interventions in the landscape of Porto Alegre city official. In a dual-insert, were accessed circuits (Magnani, 1999), trajectories and projects (Old, 2013) both authorised interventions, many of those organized by the municipality of Porto Alegre through the Municipal Department for youth, as well as unauthorized interventions, trail through forums on online social networks. Using Ethnography (Eckert and rock, 2013), that is, the "[...] exploration of urban spaces to be investigated by hiking in which the researcher is aware of the variations of the forms of space occupation, of social interaction and tensions in the territories lived "(Eckert; Rock, 2013:31), sought a pre-established dichotomies between the spacing nomenclatures "graffiti" and "pixo", with the intention to first understand how individuals inserted in this practice carried over with greater freedom than the media or institutional discourse between these categories, making their porous borders and inaccurate.

Krieg, Jean-gabriel 27 February 2017 (has links)
Indoor environments present opportunities for a rich set of location-aware services in the information and communications technology (ICT) area. Therefore, accurately localizing a user indoors has become a key enabling technology. This thesis addresses the issue of tracking a user equipped with an off-the-shelf smartphone by exploiting its embedded motion sensors. Leveraging key characteristics of human locomotion, we propose a complete, infrastructure-free indoor navigation solution, allowing a user to navigate any unknown building with meter-level accuracy. Finally, extending our understanding of locomotion to outdoors areas where users are inside vehicles, we design and implement a smartphone application for smart on-street parking.

Investigating the business process implications of managing road works and street works

Hussain, Rizwana S. January 2017 (has links)
Around 2.5 million utility works (street works) occurred in England in 2016 with a construction cost of approximately £2 billion. Comparative figures for highway works (road works) are not readily available, but are expected to be similarly significant. Unsurprisingly, the volume of road works and street works (RWSW) activity in urban areas is considered to have a negative impact on the road network causing disruption and premature deterioration, blighting the street scene, damaging local business trade, and significantly increasing social, economic and environmental costs. Indeed the social costs of street works alone are estimated to be around £5.1 billion annually. Despite the economic significance of highway infrastructure, the subject of road works and street works management is under-researched, with greater research emphasis on technology-based, as opposed to policy-based management approaches. Consequently, the aim of this study was to investigate the efficiency and effectiveness of managing the business process of RWSW. Due to limited academic literature in the subject domain, earlier research focused on identifying the industry actors, their motivations, as well as drivers and barriers to RWSW management. Semi-structured interviews with industry stakeholders highlighted the industry s complexity and revealed that several issues contributed to ineffective RWSW management. Principal problems included Street Authorities (SA) failing to take enough ownership of the RWSW coordination process, highway legislation not encouraging joint working due to inherent challenges arising from reinstatement guarantees, and entrenched attitudes and adversarial practices in the construction industry encouraging silo working. The Derby Permit Scheme (legislative tool) was intended to improve RWSW management through giving SAs greater control of highway works. Accordingly, RWSW activity was tested through a statistical time series intervention analysis to separately examine the impacts of the Highway Authority (HA) led works and utility industry led works over 6.5 years. The Permit Scheme was found to reduce utility works durations by around 5.4%; equivalent to 727 days, saving between £2.1 - £7.4 million in construction and societal costs annually. Conversely, the Permit Scheme did not noticeable reduce the HA led works. Instead, the introduction of a works order management system (WOMS) to automate some of the back office road works process was found to reduce works durations by 34%; equivalent to 6519 days and saving between £8.3 - £48.3m per annum. This case study highlighted that more considered practices were required by the HA to reduce RWSW. The stakeholder study and the automated WOMS technology found that well-managed business processes tended to lead to better executed highway works on-site. Informed by these experiences, the sponsor was keen to re-engineer its internal business processes. Business process mapping was adopted to identify inefficient practices and improved coordinated working opportunities on three key internal teams involved in the road works process. Findings revealed that silo working was inherent and that processes were built around fragmented and outdated Information Technology (IT) systems, creating inefficiencies. A subsequent validation exercise found that certain practices, such as restricted data access and hierarchal management styles were culturally embedded and also common across other local authorities. Peer reviewed recommendations to improve working practices were made, such as adopting an integrated Highways Management IT system, vertical integration between the customer relationship management IT system and the Highways IT systems, and the provision of regulatory training. In conclusion, based on the finding of this study, a generic logic map was created with potential to transfer the learning to other local authorities and for their use when evaluating road works administrative processes.

Street Music, City Rhythms : The urban soundscape as heard by street musicians

Adam, Jonathan January 2018 (has links)
The soundscape plays a key, if often overlooked, role in the construction of public urban space. Street music – a conscious deliberate propagation of sound in public space – opens an entryway into comprehending the role of sound in the city, and what it reveals about the city’s inhabitants. Ethnographic fieldwork in Brussels and Stockholm focuses on street musicians of all kinds, exploring how their music is shaped by their personal motivations, how their practices negotiate meaning in sound and in space, and how their rhythms shape, and are shaped by, the city. These explorations give reason to question R. Murray Schafer’s philosophies on soundscape studies, particularly in the urban context. Drawing from Henri Lefebvre’s notions of the production of space, and rhythmanalysis as an analytical tool, the urban soundscape is understood as an ongoing negotiation of individual actions, where dynamics of power, identity, and ideology become audible. Street musicians and their sound cultures feature not just as a topic worthy of study, but also as a guide of how and why to listen to and analyze the rhythms of the city.
