Photoluminescence Enhancement of Ge Quantum Dots by Exploiting the Localized Surface Plasmon of Epitaxial Ag Islands

January 2015 (has links)
abstract: This dissertation presents research findings regarding the exploitation of localized surface plasmon (LSP) of epitaxial Ag islands as a means to enhance the photoluminescence (PL) of Germanium (Ge) quantum dots (QDs). The first step of this project was to investigate the growth of Ag islands on Si(100). Two distinct families of Ag islands have been observed. “Big islands” are clearly faceted and have basal dimensions in the few hundred nm to μm range with a variety of basal shapes. “Small islands” are not clearly faceted and have basal diameters in the 10s of nm range. Big islands form via a nucleation and growth mechanism, and small islands form via precipitation of Ag contained in a planar layer between the big islands that is thicker than the Stranski-Krastanov layer existing at room-temperature. The pseudodielectric functions of epitaxial Ag islands on Si(100) substrates were investigated with spectroscopic ellipsometry. Comparing the experimental pseudodielectric functions obtained for Si with and without Ag islands clearly identifies a plasmon mode with its dipole moment perpendicular to the surface. This observation is confirmed using a simulation based on the thin island film (TIF) theory. Another mode parallel to the surface may be identified by comparing the experimental pseudodielectric functions with the simulated ones from TIF theory. Additional results suggest that the LSP energy of Ag islands can be tuned from the ultra-violet to the infrared range by an amorphous Si (α-Si) cap layer. Heterostructures were grown that incorporated Ge QDs, an epitaxial Si cap layer and Ag islands grown atop the Si cap layer. Optimum growth conditions for distinct Ge dot ensembles and Si cap layers were obtained. The density of Ag islands grown on the Si cap layer depends on its thickness. Factors contributing to this effect may include the average strain and Ge concentration on the surface of the Si cap layer. The effects of the Ag LSP on the PL of Ge coherent domes were investigated for both α-Si capped and bare Ag islands. For samples with low-doped substrates, the LSPs reduce the Ge dot-related PL when the Si cap layer is below some critical thickness and have no effect on the PL when the Si cap layer is above the critical thickness. For samples grown on highly-doped wafers, the LSP of bare Ag islands enhanced the PL of Ge QDs by ~ 40%. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Physics 2015

E-CARe : une méthode d'ingénierie des systèmes d'information ubiquitaires / E-CARe : a method for ubiquitous Information Systems Engineering

Ben Cheikh, Ansem 04 June 2012 (has links)
Ubiquitous Information Systems appeared as a consequence to emerging and evolving communication and mobile technologies providing the system with information on its environment, the environment of its users and their profiles. These data constitute the application context and are used to provide personalized, targeted and relevant services. However, ubiquitous services face some difficulties and challenges concerning specially needed contextual data, adaptation degree and computerized decision making. This is due to the gap between advanced ubiquitous services and their applications, and methods and processes for developing and engineering ubiquitous systems. Our goal in this thesis is to propose an engineering method for ubiquitous Information Systems considering different requirements resulting from the mobile and high scalable nature of these systems. The proposed method is based on a development process and a set of generic metamodels and languages facilitating a complete system specification and implementation. The proposed process separates functional, technical and ubiquitous specifications. Ubiquitous specifications enable the structural and event based context models definition while considering user requirements and security requirements. Adaptation and context awareness functionalities are supported by structural and dynamic context models. The proposed event oriented approach is enhanced by the adoption of an event processing architecture. Ubiquitous specifications are integrated into a classical information systems engineering process to constitute the E-CARe process including functional and technical specifications. Our propositions are used to design a user assistance application in the transport domain, highly dependent on the ambient environment and events.

The aim of this thesis was to seek, in the aesthetic studies of György Lukács, contributions to understand how art contributes in the process of education and development of individuality for itself. In this way, we show how art education, grounded in historical-critical pedagogy, moves in the same direction as Lukács studies when it affirms the educational character of artistic objectivations in evoking the most genuine human feelings, thus gathering the basic assumptions to develop the individuality for itself. This was a theoretical work founded on the historical-dialectical method, which used the technique of bibliographical research considering as main source the production of the main authors of historical-critical pedagogy and Lukács studies on aesthetics. We conclude the study by confirming our initial hypothesis that Lukács aesthetic studies have important contributions to the understanding of the humanizing character of art, constituting an important contribution to proposals on the teaching of art in schools in the perspective of historical-critical pedagogy. / 1585875

The mineral fertilization is an important factor in enhancing the productivity of sugar cane. Among the essential nutrients, the nitrogen (N) is highlighted by the amount absorbed and removed. It should also give importance to the elements called non-essential, such as silicon (Si), which is supposed to increase production of sugar cane, specially under high doses of N. The Si content of tropical soils, however, is very low due to the advanced weathering degree. The objective of this work was to evaluate the growth of sucar cane in greenhouse conditions and the effects of nitrogen (N) and silicon (Si) doses on dry matter production, N content; Si soil and plant contents. The experimental design was a randomized blocks with treatments organized in 2x3x2+1 in factorial scheme ( two types of corrective material, tree corrective material rates, two nitrogen rates plus o control treatment), with four replications. The experimental units were pots filled with 40 dm3 of medium texture Oxissol. The slag improved soil concentrations of Si as well as its plant contents. Under recommended doses, the slag do not differ from lime on the leaves angle, and plant hight and dry matter. Levels of N alone do not affect the measured plant variables. However, the increasing on N levels reduced Si availability in the soil, but increased Si levels in the plant.

No. of bitstreams: 1 texto completo.pdf: 2907131 bytes, checksum: 7c8c658c01f5e065741077a77ef12f4d (MD5) Previous issue date: 2011-02-28 / Fundação de Amparo a Pesquisa do Estado de Minas Gerais / The genomes of most plant viruses code for only 4-10 proteins which are required to complete the infection cycle, including the stages of viral genome replication, cell-to-cell movement and systemic spread. For a successful infection, these viral proteins must interact with host factors, modulating metabolic pathways and coordinating a complex network of biochemical and molecular interactions in the pathogen s favor. A subtractive library constructed from susceptible tomato plants infected by the plant potyvirus Pepper yellow mosaic virus (PepYMV) identified several genes which are putatively involved in the initial steps of the viral infection process, including those that code for the Translationally Controlled Tumor Protein (TCTP) and the tomato homologue of the Saccharomyces cerevisae Gal83 (Sl-Gal83), a protein of the SNF1 complex. TCTP is a highly conserved protein in eukaryotes, and is involved in several fundamental cellular processes such as cell growth, cell cycle progression, programmed cell death and protection against different types of stresses. SNF1 plays an important role in transcriptional activation and expression of genes involved in the cellular response to different stresses, such as nutrient limitation, high salinity, heat shock and virus infection. The objectives of this work were to study the roles of TCTP and Sl-Gal83 during PepYMV infection in susceptible hosts. Transgenic tomatoes (cv. 'Moneymaker') silenced for these genes were generated and were mechanically inoculated with PepYMV. ELISA and qRT-PCR were performed to verify the phenotype resulting from Sl-Gal83 and TCTP silencing. The results showed that non-transformed plants were infected, while all ten silenced plants remained symptomless, were ELISA negative and had reduced viral load. The subcellular localization of TCTP in healthy and PepYMVinfected plants was analyzed by confocal microscopy using a TCTP-YFP fusion. In healthy plants the subcellular localization of TCTP is cytoplasmatic, as described for other organisms. Forty-eight hours after PepYMV infection, TCTP is relocated to the nucleus. To determine which PepYMV protein(s) promotes nuclear targeting of TCTP, each viral protein (P1, HC-Pro, P3, PIPO, P3N-PIPO, CI, 6K2, NIa, NIb and CP) was coexpressed individually with pYFP-TCTP. Results showed that TCTP accumulates predominantly in the nucleus when co-infiltrated with CI and NIa, and is distributed equally in the nucleus and cytoplasm when co-infiltrated with P1, PIPO, P3N-PIPO, 6K2 and NIb. In plants co-infiltrated with HC-Pro, P3 and CP, TCTP remained in the cytoplasm. In order to identify and characterize additional viral and host factors involved in the TCTP-mediated network of plant-potyvirus interactions, TCTP was cloned as a TAP (tandem affinity purification) tag fusion.Protein complexes were purified using TAP, and its constituents were analyzed by mass spectrometry. However,it was not possible to identify the proteins. The probable limiting factor for a more efficient detection was the low concentration of protein eluted. Thus, it is necessary to optimize the protocol of extraction/elution to obtain a higher concentration of proteins complexed with nTAPi- TCTP. Together, the results of this work indicate that both TCTP and Sl-Gal83 play critical roles in the tomato-PepYMV interaction, being necessary for the establishment of a systemic infection. Further studies should be conducted to improve our understanding of the nature and mechanisms of the interactions between TCTP, Sl-Gal83 and PepYMV.

Still, I´ve been cultivating for a few years the research and practice of Butoh. Between approximations and questionings, I realized that my interest resided in this disturbance of wanting to know and the kind of relationship made possible by the choice of not saying, not showing, not revealing, etc. Something that doesn´t configure any egoism but, on the opposite, makes the artist responsible for his own desire of creation. Through the interest towards this figure of the other that accompanies and shares a search process, I report some experiences from the creative process of DNA de DAN, dance/instalation performance created with the artist Maikon K, in 2013, through the award Prêmio Funarte Petrobrás de Dança Klauss Vianna/2012, in which I was a body coach and director of movement. In this course I have experienced what can be this position of the other who listens, punctuates, suggests, argues and proposes questions. The theoretical reflections and the themes approached by this work are thoughts that the practice produced like, for instance, the ideas of self cultivation by Michel Foucault and the spiritual exercises by Pierre Hadot. All those questions contribute to the thought of an ethics of the artistic doings. A handmade of self-writing, authorship and intimacy from the writing of personal diaries in the Portuguese class. This is the smaller summary of this dissertation. But the formality of the academic language requires that the abstract be broader. Well. We have then: this dissertation is the understanding of some aspects triggered by a research, developed from the socio-historical perspective (FREITAS, 2003), together with two groups of 8th grade Elementary Public School in the city of Rio Claro, São Paulo State. Considering fifteen diaries made available by the author-students, as well as the field diaries of the teacher-researcher and the post-ones she has been writing along the data comprehension, through the Ginzburg (1996) indicium paradigm, this dissertation seeks to understand the writing of personal diaries as a form of constitution of the subjects involved in the research, based on the authorship marks that they instituted in the personal diary discursive genre. In the sequence, intimacy, thought as friendship, enters as an inherent aspect of the relations established between the subjects in the writing of the personal diaries, in order to perceive it as the space of the constitution of oneself next to the "other", as well as the relevance of the ethical responsibility of the relations of intimacy established in the research with / in the school and, consequently, in / with the Portuguese class. Finally, it brings considerations about "other practices" in the Portuguese class, in the research with / in the school and in the writing of the dissertation. It should also be pointed out that this dissertation is a handmade, textual work that seeks the art, through fictionalization process in the chronic discursive genre, chosen to understand the authorship and intimacy instituted in the personal diaries genre, as well as by knitting, embroidering, finally, weaving a text with the memories from of my grandmother-artisan.
