Background: Conflicting evidence of an association between alcohol consumption and periodontal disease has been suggested in the literature. The aim of the present study was to investigate the impact of alcohol consumption on periodontal attachment loss (PAL) over a period of 5-years. Methods: A multistage probability sampling strategy was used to draw a representative sample of the metropolitan area of Porto Alegre, Brazil. Five hundred sixty one individuals (238 males and 323 females) that were 19-65 years-old, had no medical history of diabetes and at least 6 teeth were included. Participants were clinically examined and interviewed in 2001 and 2006. Alcohol consumption was assessed by asking participants about the usual number of drinks consumed in a week. Standard formulas were used to calculate the amount of pure alcohol consumed per day in grams. Drinkers were categorized into occasional (<3g/day) and regular drinkers (≥3g/day). Individuals showing ≥4 teeth with proximal PAL ≥3 mm over the 5-years follow-up period were classified as having disease progression. Linear models were used to estimate the relative risk. Results: Male regular drinkers had higher risk of having PAL progression than never-drinkers. After adjusting for important co-factors regular drinkers had 1% increased risk per grams/day of pure alcohol consumption (RR: 1.01, 95%CI 1.00-1.02), which means between 5 to 7% increased risk per drink per day. Male occasional drinkers were not at higher risk of having disease progression. No association between alcohol consumption and periodontitis was observed for females. Conclusion: Alcohol consumption increased the risk of PAL progression in male regular drinkers. The impact of alcohol cessation initiatives on the periodontal health should be evaluated.

The relationship between alcohol and periodontal disease have been evaluated in humans throughout cross-sectional and longitudinal studies in the last decade. The investigations have led to conflicting results about the influence of alcohol drinking on periodontitis progression. In four studies with Wistar rats, alcohol consumption in concentrations ranging between 10% to 30% was associated with greater alveolar bone loss. In these studies, different methods of bone loss evaluation have been used in animal model studies and it turns difficult to make a direct comparison between investigations that utilized different alcohol concentrations. However, the literature has associated moderate alcohol consumption with improvement in immunological status and reduction in inflammatory markers, reducing cardiovascular events and atherosclerosis. The mechanisms by which alcohol influences these parameters seems to be ambiguous and dependent of dose, pattern of consumption and individual characteristics. The conflicting results between beverage consumption and periodontal disease may suggest the biphasic pattern of alcohol. There aren’t studies in animal models that evaluated the impact of low alcohol concentrations on alveolar bone loss. Discussion about methodological issues and results interpretation in relation to studies in animals are restricted to few studies. The aim of the present thesis was to evaluate the impact of alcohol consumption in a concentration of 5% on periodontal breakdown in a ligature periodontitis-induced model. Also, a comparison between two distinct methods for bone loss assessment was evaluated. Linear and area morphometric evaluation revealed that rats receiving ethanol 5% presented less alveolar bone loss than rats in control group in unligated teeth (0.32±0.07 and 0.37±0.07 respectively;p=0.04). Despite the fact that rats in test group presented less alveolar bone loss even in ligated teeth when compared to controls, differences were no statistically significantly (0.78±0.14 and 0.84±0.18 respectively;p=0.14).A value of 0.98 were found in Pearson’s Correlation between linear and area morphometric methods of evaluating alveolar bone loss indicating an almost perfect correlation. Both methods were reliable for detecting alterations in alveolar bone crest. The results of the present study revealed that alcohol consumption in moderate concentrations (5%) may inhibit alveolar bone loss in Wistar rats.

Alcohol misuse in relation to traumatic brain injury:the Northern Finland 1966 birth cohort studyWinqvist, S. (Satu) 04 June 2008 (has links)
Abstract
Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is often the leading cause of death and the most common cause of permanent disability in children and young adults. The hospital admission rates as well as the incidence and mortality rates of TBI vary enormously in different countries and populations. Even though alcohol misuse is a well-known modifiable risk factor for TBI and other injuries, few studies have been carried out on drinking patterns in relation to TBI, alcohol's role in recurrent brain injuries as well as TBI in relation to alcohol use in children and adolescents.
The Northern Finland 1966 Birth Cohort was used to study the epidemiology and recurrence of TBI as well as alcohol use by children with TBI by the age of 14 years and those who sustained TBI later in life. The role of parents' alcohol misuse on children's TBI was also studied.
The incidence of TBI in the whole study population was 118/100 000 person-years (PY), and the pediatric incidence of TBI (children aged under 16 years) was 130/100 000 PY. Up to the age of 10 years, the occurrence of TBI did not differ by gender, but after that age, boys and men had a higher incidence compared to girls and women. Mortality from TBI in the whole study population was 14/100 000 PY. Parental alcohol misuse and male gender were significant risk factors for the occurrence of TBI in childhood. Drinking to intoxication at the age of 14 years was a more common habit of TBI subjects than controls, especially among girls. Frequent alcohol drinking and drunkenness reported at the age of 14 years as well as male gender were independent predictors of TBI later in life. An alcohol-related first TBI and urban place of birth were found to be significant risk factors for recurrent TBI. A significant positive correlation between first and recurrent TBIs with respect to alcohol involvement was observed.
Alcohol drinking and parental alcohol misuse should be recognized among children and adolescents with acute TBI. Because alcohol drinking predicts the recurrence of TBI, a brief intervention focused on drinking habits is needed as an immediate preventive measure.

Brain injury and hazardous alcohol drinking in trauma patientsSavola, O. (Olli) 11 June 2004 (has links)
Abstract
Head injury is the leading cause of death and disability in trauma patients, and alcohol misuse is often associated with such injuries. Despite modern diagnostic facilities, the extent of traumatic brain injury (TBI) is difficult to assess and supplementary diagnostic tools are warranted. The contribution of alcohol misuse to traumas also needs to be elucidated, as the role of different patterns of alcohol drinking in particular has received less attention.
We investigated the clinical utility of a novel serum marker of brain damage, protein S100B, as a tool for assessing TBI in patients with trauma. We also investigated the patterns of alcohol drinking among trauma patients and the trauma mechanisms in relation to blood alcohol concentration (BAC), with special emphasis on head traumas. Finally, we studied the early identification of hazardous drinkers among trauma patients.
Serum protein S100B was found to be a feasible supplementary method for assessing TBI, as the latter was shown to elevate its levels significantly, the highest values being found in patients with severe injuries. S100B was also found to be elevated in patients with mild head injury, where it was associated with an increased risk of developing post-concussion symptoms (PCSs). Extracranial injuries also increased S100B values in patients with multitrauma. Accordingly, S100B was not specific to TBI. The more severe the extracranial injury, the higher the S100B value that was found.
Binge drinking was found to be the predominant pattern in trauma patients. Alcohol intoxication on admission and hazardous drinking patterns were more often present in patients with head injury than in those with other types of trauma. The risk of sustaining a head trauma significantly increased with increasing BAC. The results also demonstrated that BAC on admission is the best marker of alcohol misuse in trauma patients. The BAC test depicts hazardous alcohol drinking better than conventional biochemical markers of alcohol misuse such as gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase (GGT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), carbohydrate-deficient transferrin (CDT), or mean corpuscular volume (MCV) of erythrocytes.
The findings support the use of S100B as a supplementary method for assessing TBI and the use of BAC as a marker of alcohol misuse in trauma patients.

Associations of Alcohol Consumption and Chronic Diseases With Sleep Apnea Among US AdultsPan, Yue, Wang, Weize, Wang, Ke-Sheng 01 June 2014 (has links)
BACKGROUND: Sleep apnea (SA) is a common sleep disorder among US adults. Associations of SA with alcohol consumption and some chronic diseases have been inconsistent. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to estimate prevalence of SA and examine its associations with potential factors including alcohol consumption, asthma, diabetes, and hypertension. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study on 823 adults with SA and 38,638 controls from the 2011 National Survey on Drug Use and Health Data. Weighted univariate and multiple logistic regression analyses were used to examine the associations of SA with the potential factors. RESULTS: The prevalence of SA was higher in males (4.01%) than in females (2.61%), while the prevalence increased with age (0.86%, 3.50%, and 4.47% for age groups of 18-25, 26-64, and ≥ 65, respectively). Univariate analysis revealed that all factors except for income and education were associated with SA (P < 0.05). In multivariable analyses, participants who were current and past alcohol consumers had significantly higher odds of having SA (OR = 1.52, 95% CI = 1.03-2.23; OR = 1.65, 95% CI = 1.09-2.49, respectively) than non-alcohol drinker. Furthermore, asthma (OR = 2.77, 95% CI = 2.04-3.75), diabetes (OR = 2.89, 95% CI = 2.19-3.83), and hypertension (OR = 2.42, 95% CI = 1.91-3.07) were significantly associated with SA. CONCLUSIONS: Age, alcohol consumption, asthma, diabetes, and hypertension, were positively associated with SA. More efforts should be directed to promoting screening for SA and finding possible treatments for SA among these vulnerable groups.

Alcohol screening and brief intervention in police custody suites: pilot Cluster Randomised Controlled Trial (AcCePT)Addison, M., Mcgovern, R., Angus, C., Becker, F., Brennan, A., Brown, H., Coulton, S., Crowe, L., Gilvarry, E., Hickman, M., Howel, D., Mccoll, E., Muirhead, C., Newbury-Birch, D., Waqas, Muhammad, Kaner, E. 09 March 2020 (has links)
Yes / Aims: There is a clear association between alcohol use and offending behaviour and significant police time is spent on alcohol-related incidents. This study aimed to test the feasibility of a trial of screening and brief intervention in police custody suites to reduce heavy drinking and re-offending behaviour.
Short summary: We achieved target recruitment and high brief intervention delivery if this occurred immediately after screening. Low rates of return for counselling and retention at follow-up were challenges for a definitive trial. Conversely, high consent rates for access to police data suggested at least some outcomes could be measured remotely.
Methods: A three-armed pilot Cluster Randomised Controlled Trial with an embedded qualitative interview-based process evaluation to explore acceptability issues in six police custody suites (north east and south west of the UK). Interventions included: 1. Screening only (Controls), 2. 10 min Brief Advice 3. Brief Advice plus 20 min of brief Counselling.
Results: Of 3330 arrestees approached: 2228 were eligible for screening (67%) and 720 consented (32%); 386 (54%) scored 8+ on AUDIT; and 205 (53%) were enroled (79 controls, 65 brief advice and 61 brief counselling). Follow-up rates at 6 and 12 months were 29% and 26%, respectively. However, routinely collected re-offending data were obtained for 193 (94%) participants. Indices of deprivation data were calculated for 184 (90%) participants; 37.6% of these resided in the 20% most deprived areas of UK. Qualitative data showed that all arrestees reported awareness that participation was voluntary, that the trial was separate from police work, and the majority said trial procedures were acceptable.
Conclusion: Despite hitting target recruitment and same-day brief intervention delivery, a future trial of alcohol screening and brief intervention in a police custody setting would only be feasible if routinely collected re-offending and health data were used for outcome measurement. / NIHR School for Public Health Research (SPHR) (SPHR-SWP-ALC-WP2). Consumo de álcool por vítimas de suicídio na cidade de São Paulo / Alcohol consumption in suicide victims in the city of Sao PauloGonçalves, Raphael Eduardo Marques 04 November 2016 (has links)
Indivíduos com esse valor de alcoolemia podem apresentar prejuízo do juízo crítico e do autocontrole, podendo desencadear o comportamento suicida naqueles com predisposiçao para tal / INTRODUCTION: Suicide is a leading cause of violent death worldwide and a major public health issue, as there has been an increase in the number of suicides, especially amongst young people. Excessive alcohol consumption is a serious public health problem, as drunkenness affects critical judgment and self-control and can trigger violent and/or self-destructive behavior, which suggests an association between alcohol consumption and victimization by suicide. In Brazil, there is a lack of studies that allow an epidemiological approach to support preventive actions in order to reduce the number of deaths by suicide and their related financial costs. OBJECTIVE: To assess the association between alcohol consumption and victimization by suicide in the city of Sao Paulo and its relationship with socio-demographic characteristics of the victims and the circumstances of suicide. METHOD: Data from 1,700 suicide victims subjected to examination of blood alcohol concentration (BAC) from 2011 to 2015 were obtained from toxicology reports performed in the Institute of Legal Medicine of the State of Sao Paulo. Data was collected on sex, age, skin color, suicide method, blood alcohol concentration (BAC), date and time of death. RESULTS: Alcohol was detected in blood samples of 30.24% of the victims and mean BAC levels were 1.73 ± 0.08 g/L. The majority of the victims were male (74.59%) and the prevalence of positive BAC was higher amongst men (34.70%) than women (17.13%). The mean age of the victims was 39.90 ± 0.75 years, while the mean age of victims with positive BAC (37.94 ± 1.08 years) was lower than victims with no detectable alcohol levels (40.75 ± 0.96 years). The most prevalent age group with positive BAC was 25-44 years. The most prevalent range of positive BAC was 0.6 to 2.5 g/L. The majority of the victims were white skinned (64.65%), but there was a higher proportion of victims with positive BAC among mulatto and black individuals. Hanging was the most prevalent suicide method in the sample (48.65%) and amongst men (55.36%), but amongst women it was precipitation (34.96%). Hanging was the suicide method with the highest proportion of victims with positive BAC, for both sexes. The majority of suicides occurred during the day (63.41%), but there was a higher proportion of victims with positive BAC on weekends and at night time. CONCLUSION: The results support the existence of an association between alcohol consumption and victimization by suicide in the city of Sao Paulo, even though a causal relationship has not been established between them, because alcohol was detected in blood samples of 30.24% of the victims and mean BAC levels were 1.73 ± 0.08 g/L. Individuals with this BAC level may present critical judgment and self-control impairment, and may trigger suicidal behavior in those with a predisposition to do so

Perfil dos universitários da área da saúde quanto ao uso de substâncias psicoativas na cidade de Ariquemes - RO / Profile of undergraduate health major students regarding the use of psychoactive substances in the city of Ariquemes -ROTerra Junior, André Tomaz 18 January 2019 (has links)
O índice de uso de drogas dentre as quais o álcool tem grande relevância é elevado no meio universitário e tem relação direta com o risco de contrair doenças sexualmente transmissíveis / Introduction: Youth is a period of vulnerability regarding the use of alcohol, drugs and other psychoactive substances, especially considering college students, and alcohol abuse is a serious global public health problem. Alcohol abuse is a worsening factor for several diseases, as well as the main risk factor for premature death and risk behaviors. Epidemiological studies indicate a high prevalence of psychoactive substance use in the age group of 18 to 25 years-old among Brazilians. \"Pharmacological Cognitive Enhancement\" (PCE) refers to medication use by healthy individuals to improve brain function and cognitive performance, the Methylphenidate (MTF) is one of the most commonly used drugs for this purpose. Objective: To evaluate alcohol and other psychoactive substances including non-prescription drugs\' consumption and risk behaviors in undergraduate students of the College of Education and Environment (FAEMA), in Brazil. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study with a quantitative approach, using a non-probabilistic convenience sample of undergraduate students. Survey: An online questionnaire with sociodemographic information, the Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System (YRBSS) and the Alcohol, Smoking and Substance Involving Screening Test (ASSIST) were used for data collection. Results: PCE among young people is a worrying behavior, being MTF (23.2%) the most used drug. Non-medical use and self-medication increase the risk of dependence and 67% of participants referred this practice, being 79.3% unaware of MTF clinical indication and health risks. From the MTF users, 70.9% were female and 34.4% presented side effects. Curiosity (24.49%, p <0.05, b = 2.396) has greater statistical significance among the studied variables. Alcohol (74.3%) is the main drug used among undergraduate students, with 54.4% stating their first contact with alcohol before 17 years-old; 21.4% had family problems due to alcohol use. Regarding binge drinking, 46.1% are adept to this practice and 73.2% are 18 to 23 years-old, being more common in females (69%). This practice is related to risk behaviors, as the majority of participants (58.3%) stated to have unprotected sexual intercourse, 13.7% had ingested alcohol before this practice and in 53.1% (R2 = 56.4) the risk of this behavior is directly related to the frequency of alcohol consumption. Conclusion: PCE among young individuals is a worrying reality and, independent of the drug, none is safe without clinical indication, making individuals susceptible to dependence. Therefore, it is crucial to intensify studies on long term drug consumption. The frequency of drug use, among which alcohol has great relevance, is high in the college environment and it is directly related to the risk of developing sexually transmitted diseases

Violência doméstica entre adolescentes escolares no município de São Paulo / Domestic violence among school adolescents in São PauloJanaina Maria Ralo 11 September 2013 (has links)
To identify the prevalence of domestic violence, estimate factors associated and describe the perception of violence in general and domestic among school adolescents. Methods: A cross sectional study was conducted with 656 adolescents aged 11 to 17 years from public schools of the extreme south of the city of São Paulo in 2012. The descriptive analysis was presented using proportions, means and standard deviations. Differences in proportions between groups victimized and not victimized by domestic violence were first compared in relation to each factor individually through Chi square test or Fisher exact. For simultaneous analysis of the factors was used Poisson regression adjusted by robust estimate of variance at a 5 per cent significance level. Domestic violence in the six months previous to the survey was analyzed as an outcome. The independent variables considered were: sociodemographic and consumption of alcohol and drugs by family members. Results: Among the 656 adolescents, 38,9 per cent (n = 255) reported having been a victim of domestic violence. Women were victimized more frequently (44,1 per cent). Significantly and positively factors associated with victimization by domestic violence were: being female (PR = 1,47; 95 per cent CI: 1,20; 1,80) and living alone with her father (PR = 1,52; 95 per cent CI: 1,11; 2,08). Adolescents have good perception about violence in general, however, when considering violence domestically, do not recognize themselves as potential victims of this violence. Conclusions: Epidemiological studies such as this are needed to reveal the reality of domestic violence and help build intersectoral public politics to promote health, psychoactive substances and a culture of peace, in order to break with the ideal violence as a method of disciplining education
