Crossing the Cartesian divide : an investigation into the role of emotion in science learning

Staus, Nancy L. (Nancy Lynn) 02 March 2012 (has links)
Although many science educators and researchers believe that emotion is an important part of the learning process, few researchers have dealt with the topic in a systematic fashion. The purpose of this study was to examine the role of emotion in the learning process, particularly in the learning of science content. My study utilized a dimensional perspective which defined emotion in terms of arousal and valence, and drew on research from the fields of psychology and neuroscience to examine how emotion affects different aspects of cognition such as attention and memory. On the basis of these findings, I developed and tested a path model to investigate the predicted relationships among emotional arousal, valence, attention, intrinsic motivation and short- and long-term learning outcomes. I conducted the study in two phases. The first phase took place in a psychology laboratory in which participants watched either an exciting or neutral nature video, read a factual article related to the video and were tested on their learning. The second phase took place at the Oregon Coast Aquarium in which participants watched a narrated otter or sea lion presentation and took a short posttest after the show. In both phases, participants' emotional arousal, valence, attention, and motivation levels were also measured for inclusion in the model. The results indicated that emotional arousal was an important predictor of short-term learning in both experiments although its effect was fully mediated by attention at the aquarium. In addition, negative valence (displeasure) and intrinsic motivation were strong predictors of short-term learning in the laboratory experiment. At the aquarium, the narrator of the animal presentation strongly affected both attention and short-term learning—visitors who listened to a non-scripted rather than a scripted narration paid more attention and had significantly better short-term learning outcomes. In the aquarium study, emotional arousal correlated strongly with several measures of long-term learning. In particular, those who felt more arousal during the animal presentation were able to describe their experience at greater length and with more detail and complexity two to three months after their visit. My findings suggest that emotional arousal is an important component of science learning both directly and through its relationship with attention. Therefore, science educators in both informal and formal learning institutions may be able to increase both attention and learning outcomes by designing emotionally arousing learning experiences around the science content they wish to teach. In addition, the importance of narrator quality in the aquarium study suggests that narrators and teachers should be trained to deliver information in such a way that supports short- and long-term science learning. / Graduation date: 2012

Τελώνης, Γιώργος 07 May 2015 (has links)
The Internet expands and users are increasing at a rate of geometric progress. Already plays a key role in the travel industry. And the reality is the main tank pumping any form of information of the travel industry. Although these are new concepts for the networks social media and content (UGC-) produced by consumers are gaining market share in travel consumers and thus affect more and more strongly their decisions. Their decisions have resulted to increase more and more the part of tourist demand that moves toward e-commerce. After examining the effect of the UGC-, in the travel industry, in which the hospitality units have the largest market share, this research will focus mainly on the effects which already has brought ,the hotel units of the larger center of Athens. We will examine in detail the assignments which bring about the reviews of the consumer in determining the price of hotels, will examine the correlations which can have the services of hotels in configuration of scores of major travel pages. There will be a record of the main from them and draw up the data; reviews the seven most popular. We will investigate the correlations of the scores for each of the categories of hotels in Athens, both star and sizes. We will examine the behavior of the various groups to send comments on the internet in relation to what various categories of hotels. It will also investigate the differences between summer and winter price and that those affected by the assessment of travel sites, in conjunction with the various categories. Finally, will investigate the correlations of scores with the values and the main features of the hotel (facilities, distance from transport, distance from center etc. ) and vice versa whether prices are influenced and with what sign and intensity of the evaluations of travel sites. Their influence on price and therefore in competition, that leads to a "misleading" comments? What their credibility? Will be measured with test reliability of all travel sites and will be compared with existing professional commercial tools. Finally, we will try to research this to find tools with simple but trainee ways will try to appreciate the value that may have been the hotel units and if they can overcome the reliability test, to examine the possibility of implementing them as an alternative billing method, apart from the usual methods cost pricing and competition.

Environmentally concious [sic] site design : a LAND code strategy / Environmentally concious site design / Environmentally conscious site design

Clement, Jessica January 2008 (has links)
The purpose of this creative project was to develop a master plan for a 450-acre site based on the recently published Land and Natural Development (LAND) Code: Guidelines for Sustainable Land Development by Diana Balmori and Gaboury Benoit. Balmori and Benoit present environmentally conscious design principles that serve as a demonstration for tangible ways to create sustainable landscapes that balance function with the need to preserve natural resources. The outcome of this project includes a detailed master plan for a 450-acre portion of Goose Pond Fish and Wildlife Area (GPFWA) located in Linton, Indiana, which serves as a model for sustainable site design in addition to offering interpretive and recreational opportunities within the focus area. / Department of Landscape Architecture

Pollination ecology of Trachymene incisa (Apiaceae): Understanding generalised plant-pollinator systems

Davila, Yvonne Caroline January 2006 (has links)
Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) / A renewed focus on generalised pollinator systems has inspired a conceptual framework which highlights that spatial and temporal interactions among plants and their assemblage of pollinators can vary across the individual, population, regional and species levels. Pollination is clearly a dynamic interaction, varying in the number and interdependence of participants and the strength of the outcome of the interaction. Therefore, the role of variation in pollination is fundamental for understanding ecological dynamics of plant populations and is a major factor in the evolution and maintenance of generalised and specialised pollination systems. My study centred on these basic concepts by addressing the following questions: (1) How variable are pollinators in a generalised pollination system? To what degree do insect visitation rates and assemblage composition vary spatially among populations and temporally among flowering seasons? (2) How does variation in pollinators affect plant reproductive success? I chose to do this using a model system, Trachymene incisa subsp. incisa (Apiaceae), which is a widespread Australian herbaceous species with simple white flowers grouped into umbels that attract a high diversity of insect visitors. The Apiaceae are considered to be highly generalist in terms of pollination, due to their simple and uniform floral display and easily accessible floral rewards. Three populations of T. incisa located between 70 km and 210 km apart were studied over 2-3 years. The few studies investigating spatial and temporal variation simultaneously over geographic and yearly/seasonal scales indicate that there is a trend for more spatial than temporal variation in pollinators of generalist-pollinated plants. My study showed both spatial and temporal variation in assemblage composition among all populations and variation in insect visitation rates, in the form of a significant population by year interaction. However, removing ants from the analyses to restrict the assemblage to flying insects and the most likely pollinators, resulted in a significant difference in overall visitation rate between years but no difference in assemblage composition between the Myall Lakes and Tomago populations. These results indicate more temporal than spatial variation in the flying insect visitor assemblage of T. incisa. Foraging behaviour provides another source of variation in plant-pollinator interactions. Trachymene incisa exhibits umbels that function as either male or female at any one time and offer different floral rewards in each phase. For successful pollination, pollinators must visit both male and female umbels during a foraging trip. Insects showed both preferences and non-preferences for umbel phases in natural patches where the gender ratio was male biased. In contrast, insects showed no bias in visitation during a foraging trip or in time spent foraging on male and female umbels in experimental arrays where the gender ratio was equal. Pollinator assemblages consisting of a mixture of different pollinator types coupled with temporal variation in the assemblages of populations among years maintains generalisation at the population/local level. In addition, spatial variation in assemblages among populations maintains generalisation at the species level. Fire alters pollination in T. incisa by shifting the flowering season and reducing the abundance of flying insects. Therefore, fire plays an important role in maintaining spatial and temporal variation in this fire-prone system. Although insect pollinators are important in determining the mating opportunities of 90% of flowering plant species worldwide, few studies have looked at the effects of variation in pollinator assemblages on plant reproductive success and mating. In T. incisa, high insect visitation rates do not guarantee high plant reproductive success, indicating that the quality of visit is more important than the rate of visitation. This is shown by comparing the Agnes Banks and Myall Lakes populations in 2003: Agnes Banks received the highest visitation rate from an assemblage dominated by ants but produced the lowest reproductive output, and Myall Lakes received the lowest visitation rate by an assemblage dominated by a native bee and produced the highest seedling emergence. Interestingly, populations with different assemblage composition can produce similar percentage seed set per umbel. However, similar percentage seed set did not result in similar percentage seedling emergence. Differences among years in reproductive output (total seed production) were due to differences in umbel production (reproductive effort) and proportion of umbels with seeds, and not seed set per umbel. Trachymene incisa is self-compatible and suffers weak to intermediate levels of inbreeding depression through early stages of the life cycle when seeds are self-pollinated and biparentally inbred. Floral phenology, in the form of synchronous protandry, plays an important role in avoiding self-pollination within umbels and reducing the chance of geitonogamous pollination between umbels on the same plant. Although pollinators can increase the rate of inbreeding in T. incisa by foraging on both male and female phase umbels on the same plant or closely related plants, most consecutive insect movements were between plants not located adjacent to each other. This indicates that inbreeding is mostly avoided and that T. incisa is a predominantly outcrossing species, although further genetic analyses are required to confirm this hypothesis. A new conceptual understanding has emerged from the key empirical results in the study of this model generalised pollination system. The large differences among populations and between years indicate that populations are not equally serviced by pollinators and are not equally generalist. Insect visitation rates varied significantly throughout the day, highlighting that sampling of pollinators at one time will result in an inaccurate estimate and usually underestimate the degree of generalisation. The visitor assemblage is not equivalent to the pollinator assemblage, although non-pollinating floral visitors are likely to influence the overall effectiveness of the pollinator assemblage. Given the high degree of variation in both the number of pollinator species and number of pollinator types, I have constructed a model which includes the degree of ecological and functional specialisation of a plant species on pollinators and the variation encountered across different levels of plant organisation. This model describes the ecological or current state of plant species and their pollinators, as well as presenting the patterns of generalisation across a range of populations, which is critical for understanding the evolution and maintenance of the system. In-depth examination of pollination systems is required in order to understand the range of strategies utilised by plants and their pollinators, and I advocate a complete floral visitor assemblage approach to future studies in pollination ecology. In particular, future studies should focus on the role of introduced pollinators in altering generalised plant-pollinator systems and the contribution of non-pollinating floral visitors to pollinator assemblage effectiveness. Comparative studies involving plants with highly conserved floral displays, such as those in the genus Trachymene and in the Apiaceae, will be useful for investigating the dynamics of generalised pollination systems across a range of widespread and restricted species.

Nid de frelons : neuf temps pour neuf atlas : histoire d'un musée d'art brésilien (1961-2011) / Hornets house : nine times for nine atlas : history museum Brazilian art (1961-2011)

Ruoso, Carolina 28 November 2016 (has links)
This research sought to understand how Museum de Arte da Universidade do Ceara (MAUC) has become a Hornets House. In order to elaborate this explanation, we observed fifty years of it history (1961-2011), starting from the intrigue about the museum models in dispute in the late twentieth century, in Fortaleza city, as well as about the controversies involving its memory. So we organized our narrative in Nove Tempos para Nove Atlas, trying to analyze this Hornet House inside out, against the grain, and for this reason we present the MAUC through it scenes, watching from behind the windows, which are the characteristics and movements to this adjective. We understand that a Hornets House Museum goes through silence, while develop community and collaborative practices that take part of its history, contributing to the broad conceptual elaboration of its curatorial process. In this thesis we unfold its conceptual aspect that justified the creation of MAUC. We traced through a reading on knowledge circulation works of art and exhibitions, a mapping of relationships networks mobilized by this museum through its structural program. We investigate the possibilities of artistic creation in the physical museum space and the dimensions of cooperation proposed by the institution regarding expositions and works of art. We also try to identify the ways of seeing and being of the visitors at MAUC through the eyes of photographers while viewing exposures.

Given the involvement of science in our daily life, science communication plays a crucial role in the conquest of citizenship, being also an important tool in the process of free-choice learning. Museums and scien ce centers have been a traditional media for public understanding of science. In order to strengthen its activities in this area, these institutions are increasingly turni ng to the new Information and Communication Technologies. They have been also evaluati ng the impact of thei r virtual presence To draw a profile of the public of the Invivo - Museum of the Life’s virtual museum - an exploratory research was developed, using three met hods of investigation: log analysis, page-tagging and on-line survey. A historical survey of the visitation recorded an increase of 340% in the number of unique visitors and 295% in the number of page views, bet ween 2005 and 2008. These data demonstrate the expressive growth of the site, when compared with the official statistics, which shows that, between 2005 and 2007, ther e were an increase of 28% of Brazilians who had accessed the Internet at least once and 41% of those who were frequent Internet users. The analysis demonstrates that visitation gr ows at the beginning of classes and falls during the school holidays. It also show s busy working days and quiet weekends. Both patterns were found in other studies on museums. Peak visitation occurs in the afternoon hours, which suggests a concentrat ion of students from junior high (from 11/12 years)and high schools. The importance of students and people involved in educational process in the visitation of Invivo is also proven by the high rate of page views of content more related to national curriculum standards. Answered spontaneously by 209 visitors, the online survey collected data on demographics, motivations. It also provided an evaluation of the site. The virtual visitors are mainly women (77.9%), most ly adult and college educat ed. Their favorite cultural activities were reading (79,9%) and Internet navigation (7 7%). This points to a culturally privileged group with different habits and profile of the Brazilian population. The site was approved by 91% of the respondents. The language and educational content were items that rece ived positive evaluation. Pa rticipants are interested in more educational material, experiences , games, health prevention, cutting-edge S&T, environment, natural phenomena and contro versies and risks of science. Users suggested, also, greater interactivity, with the encouragement of dialogue and the promotion of debate, and more resources, such as bigger images, graphics and video

The main objective of the present research was to estimate the monetary value of visitation of Park "PHILLIPE WESTIN CABRAL OF VASCONCELOS" and adjacencies of ESALQ/USP located in the City of Piracicaba, State of São Paulo.
