We understand that you’re disappointed and agree that one injured bird is one to many” : An analysis of how crisis communication practices are used by a company on their Facebook page

Andersson, Maja, Tememi, Aous January 2022 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to examine how organizations are trying to rebuild their trust and reputation when they are communicating directly with their customers on their Facebook page in a crisis. To examine this the study used a qualitative text analysis. The posts on Facebook were posted after Aftonbladert came out with their investigation “200 Sekunder”, reporting and exposing bad animal husbandry at Kronfågel. The information was posted on their Facebook page in May and September 2021, they got hundreds of comments from upset customers and Kronfågel responded to many of the comments. To answer and examine the purpose, the following research question was formulated: -Which Communication strategies does Kronfågel use to rebuild their trust and reputation in conjunction with the animal husbandry exposing in May and September 2021? The research question was based on a theoretical framework including, Image Repair Theory, Apologia strategies, and the rhetorical framework Ethos, Pathos, and Logos. Besides this research question, we also examine consumers' comments and expressions of emotion on the organization's Facebook page.  To get the answers for what strategies Kronfågel used based on the theoretical framework we used predefined questions when we analyzed the material. After reading the comment thoroughly we could choose our empirical material. We focused on comments that didn’t have a copy/paste answer and showed variation from Kronfågel, we also based it on the following criteria -The comment has to be about the crisis -Every comment should include letters, not only smileys or other characters -We only analyze the first comment by Kronfågel for every customer Based on these guidelines and criteria we landed in 56 comments in total. The result of this examination showed that it was a few strategies that were used more frequently than others. Minimization and  Corrective actions were used the most In Image Repair Theory. In Apologia, Seeks reconciliation with injured stakeholders and Expresses regret was used most frequently. The analysis also showed that Kronfågel used Ethos, Pathos, and logos throughout their communication. Besides the strategies that were used the most we also found that it was strategies that occurred only a few times, Bolstering, Differentiering och Defeasibillity och Good intentions in Image Repair Theory. In Apologia, Explicitly acknowledges wrongdoing and Fully accepts responsibility was only found a few times in the comments.

Rosqvist, Jenny January 2008 (has links)
<p>In this essay I want to investigate how the <em>poodle strategy</em> affects a person’s credibility when he or she uses it. It’s primary purpose is to suppress further media coverage but it is also a strategy for defending oneself and hence rescuing one’s reputation either as a private person or as an official. The essay’s research questions are: How has the strategy been applied for defensive purposes and what are the results? To which extent can the Stasis theory and Benoit’s theory on Apologia be connected to the strategy? Does the strategy affect the user’s credibility? To answer these questions four cases from the political sphere in Sweden where persons have been said to have “done a poodle” have been analyzed. Additionally this essay investigates how applicable the Stasis theory is as a model for analyses and how relevant analyses based on stasis theory are today. Furthermore it investigates wheteher a fusion of the Stasis theory and Benoit´s theory on Apologia can be profitable. An important conclusion is that the poodle strategy is a strategy, which is more complicated than one might first think. Whether the strategy works depends on a series of factors; for example the person’s initial credibility (or ethos) and the morality of the actions. These factors need to be assessed before the strategy is put into use.

A Rhetorical Analysis of Jimmy Swaggart's 1988-89 Program for Defense

Simonds, Cheri J. (Cheri Jo) 05 1900 (has links)
This study seeks to determine the extent to which Jimmy Swaggart's program for defense in 1988 complies with the expectations of the apologia genre. Three discourse media are examined for evidence of denial, bolstering, differentiation, and transcendence. Swaggart's defense is classified as "justificative" in that it seeks approval of actions. Swaggart's motivating drive force is defined as the need to assure the financial success of his ministry. Swaggart's defense is then compared with the past apologies of Nixon, Truman, and Kennedy. It was determined that certain apologies cannot serve as a reference standard if the contextual factors are not similar. There are some rhetorical resources available to religious figures that are not available to politicians.

Fans Don't Boo Nobodies: Image Repair Strategies of High-Profile Baseball Players During the Steroid Era

Nielsen, Kevin R. 23 September 2011 (has links) (PDF)
Baseball's Steroid Era put many different high-profile athletes under pressure to explain steroid allegations that were made against them. This thesis used textual analysis of news reports and media portrayals of the athletes, along with analysis of their image repair strategies to combat those allegations, to determine how successful the athletes were in changing public opinion as evidenced through the media. The contexts, media reports, and strategies of Jason Giambi, Mark McGwire, Andy Pettitte, and Roger Clemens were analyzed and revealed important implications involving effective use of image repair strategies. They provided a deeper framework for the success of mortification strategies. An authentic, sincere mortification strategy has more power to change the media's reporting and portrayal of the athlete, while stunted or incentivized mortification strategies provide diminishing results. The four different situations of the players and the different combinations of strategies used provide insight into how much a public persona matters in confronting allegations. They show how ineffective the strategy of minimization is against allegations that involve on-field performance. The situations reveal how the promise of future on-field actions, along with actual on-field success can help repair an athlete's image without a solid rhetorical strategy. They show the amount of information offered, along with the strategies used, influences the amount of persuasion that occurs. The different situations also showed how a complete image repair strategy is successful in ending news coverage of the allegations and not just changing the media portrayal.

Its goal is to investigate the constitution of the rhetorical proves: ethos, pathos and logos in the theological discourse, due the fluency of such a discourse in our society. We present a panoramic view of the history of Bible canonization and its process of translations of the New and the Old Testaments. We have selected as a sample for analyzes the chapters 10, 11, 12 and 13 of the Second Letter of Paul to the Corinthians, text which forms Paul s apology. In order to help this analyzes, we have done a presentation of Paul s Biography as well as of the city of Corinth and its Christian community. We have also written about the general characteristics of Paul s writings, dedicating a special attention to the Second Letter to the Corinthians, source of our sample of analyzes. To achieve the established objective, we used the theories of Classic Rhetoric and The New Rhetoric from Michel Meyer (1993, 1994, 2007), Chaïm Perelman and Lucie Olbrechts-Tyteca (1996). We have started the analyses rescuing some of the historical, linguistics and theological aspects of Paul and the Corinthians community and looked for each one of the rhetorical proves methodologically separated. The analyses proved the argumentation within Paul s discourse is made up by the rhetorical proves that are intertwined and superposed with one each other, which goal is to conquer the audience / Esta dissertação se insere na linha de pesquisa: Texto e discurso nas Modalidades Oral e Escrita.

O Diálogo com Trifão de São Justino mártir e a relação entre judeus e cristãos (século II) / The dialogue with trypho of São Justin Martir and the relationship between jews and christians

Giandoso, Daniel Marques 04 May 2011 (has links)
The aim of this essay is to analyze the relationship between Jews and Christians in the second century from the evidence presented by S. Justin in the Dialogue with Trypho. For this, we deem necessary to contextualize the work in the set of changes within the Roman Empire and the state action against the two religions. Thus, the Jewish War in Palestine and the persecution of Christians affected the relationship between Jews and Christians. Furthermore, we believe that Judeo-Christianity and some features of Christianity in Rome help us better understand the intentions of Justin with his work. We will discuss the main theories about the recipients of the Dialogue. We believe it is possible to investigate points of contact and rapprochement between Jews and Christians from what Justin knows about the Judaism of his time. However, the text also reveals the tensions and rivalries between the two groups of believers, gestated in a controversial environment. Both cases require a more critical analysis of the apologist´s words.
