Integrated analysis of bioclimatic building design in three climate zones in France

Chaneac, Jean January 2012 (has links)
ABSTRACT At a time where the planet is facing one of its major global crises, re-thinking of systems in every sector is needed. In the field of energy at its global meaning, various ways of action are considered. In this context, housing sector represents a key point of new conception of our society. Nowadays buildings are no longer considered only as designed housing "objects". Comfort, consumption, environmental impacts are part of the words which appear utterly linked to every single building. Thermal behaviour tends to be as much important as architectural and structural concerns. Indeed, energy savings have become one of the most talked about parameters of a building. Through this paper, key parameters of a building will be compared in order to obtain the most effective houses depending on their location. Nevertheless, comfort will be studied too because of its increasing importance in modern society. The results will be obtained according various aspects: technical ones, environmental ones and financial ones. For all those houses meeting the French standards, similar comparison will be made. Thus the approach will not be organised one house after another but through the impact of one parameter after another to draw the final comparison between the three houses according to the same parameters. Keywords: energy consumption, CO2 emissions, sustainable systems, bioclimatic buildings

Sustainable and affordable housing in Nairobi, Kenya : An analysis of challenges and opportunities from the perspective of key actors / Hållbara och prisvärda bostäder i Nairobi, Kenya : En analys av utmaningar och möjligheter ur nyckelaktörernas perspektiv

Eglin, Toyah January 2023 (has links)
The global urban population is projected to grow rapidly in the coming years, leading to an increase in housing demand that is not always met with adequate supply of quality housing. In the low-and middle-income context of Kenya, this gap has led to the proliferation of sub-standard housing implementations, with significant social and environmental impacts. However, attention is rarely paid to sustainable housing design practices in Kenya, understood here as climate responsive and socially integrated adaptations, despite their proven capacity in other developing countries for reducing environmental impacts while making housing more affordable. The city of Nairobi presents potential for alternative trajectories of development in the construction industry as one of the fastest growing urban areas in the region with unique climatic conditions that are underutilised and understudied in the building sector. This thesis explores, through the perspectives of local actors, the potentials and challenges of implementing affordable housing in Nairobi by using sustainable, locally based strategies. This was achieved through desktop research, semi-structured interviews with key actors from across government, academia, and industry backgrounds, as well as a field visit to a development site. The collected data was then analysed qualitatively through a thematic content analysis and triangulated to extract relevant learnings. The key findings of this research are that there is a lot of potential in Nairobi for locally adapted housing strategies to respond to affordable housing issues and provide low-cost and high-quality alternatives due to its climatic conditions and socio-cultural traditions. Yet there are some structural challenges in terms of policy framing and local perceptions of sustainability that limit the implementation of such practices in the Nairobi housing sector. This thesis adds to the critical discussion of adequate affordable housing by providing a holistic view of the differing or overlapping perspectives in the field, deriving potentials of the local context, and providing an understanding that could help guide the housing industry in the direction of resilient and inclusive housing opportunities. The study suggests the need for further research into the implementation of sustainable and affordable housing in the context of Nairobi, as well as the wider regional context.

It is presented as object of study the correlation between the neighborhood Renascen?a II s microclimate in S?o Luis /MA-Brazil, hot-humid climate city, and its urban morphological changes. As well as the thermal comfort s satisfaction level of its outdoor users. The research has as general goal to diagnosis the way these transformations caused by the urbanization influence the Renascen?a II s microclimate, identifying critical spots of the studied area, in order to contribute with land use recommendations based on bioclimatic architecture concepts and supply bases to urban design decisions adequate to the S?o Luis climate. It is presented as theoretical bases the urban climate, its concepts and elements. After that, the thermal comfort conditioners and its prediction models of thermal comfort sensation in outdoor are presented. The predictive models are presented along with bioclimatic assessment methods. Finally the use of bioclimatic assessment as an effective tool to identify places that need changes or preservation in order to seek environment quality. The applied methodology was based on the studies of Katzschner (1997), complemented by Oliveira s (1988) and Bustos Romero s (2001) studies that suggest an analysis and evaluation of maps of topography, buildings floors, land use, green areas and land covering, in order to overlap their characteristics and identify climate variable s measurements points; then a quantitative analysis of the climate variables (air temperature and humidity, wind speed and direction) of the chosen points takes place. It was perceived that Renaissance II has no permanence areas as squares or parks, its outdoor has little vegetation and presets high land impermeability and built density levels.

Gamboa-H, Jhonny D. 06 1900 (has links)
Motivated by the development of sustainable architectural production in the countries of Latin America, particularly in Colombia, my research focuses on the adaptation of architecture to this new context. The traditional approach to the integration of energy and climate is bioclimatic architecture. This way is based on the reproduction of knowledge through the use of ancestral techniques that were acquired over time, and which evolved from shelter design. The bioclimatic architecture studies the physical phenomena in relation to thermal comfort to reproduce in a new architectural style. New environmental assessment methods have been developed in recent decades to improve environmental integration in buildings. These methods give priority to standardization of solutions and use certification systems to recognize the environmental and energy performance of buildings. The expected results are in compliance with international sustainability standards. This thesis focuses on the comparative analysis of bioclimatic architecture and environmental certification using the structure and the topics addressed by LEED, one of the best-known methods of such certification. This comparison shows that the two approaches are motivated by the same environmental concerns but their methods of integration of these concerns differ, particularly with regard to the consideration of local and global factors.

Estudo do microclima e conforto térmico proporcionado por cinco espécies de árvores urbanas do município de Gurupi, TO

Pérez, Cláudia Alicia Marín 21 March 2017 (has links)
& LMPerry (Jambo vermelho) e Licania tomentosa (Benth.) / The vulnerability to thermal stress, one of the main causes of human discomfort, may be one of the key elements in urban centers in hot climates. In this scenario, the urban forestry is considered one of the tools for mitigating this effect, in the urban environment. For this purpose, this tool needs for more information about the consequence that the trees produce in the vicinity in terms of reduction of thermal stress and on the variability of this effect with the species and the seasons of the year. The objective of this work was to characterize and analyze the microclimate and the thermal comfort, in the vicinity of five tree species Pachira aquática Aubl.(Monguga); Mangifera indica L.(Mangueira); Caesalpinia pluviosa DC.(Sibipiruna); Syzygium malaccense (L.) Merr. & LMPerry (Jambo vermelho) e Licania tomentosa (Benth.) Fritsch (Oiti), located in the central sector of Gurupi, Tocantins in the year 2016. The considered microclimatic variables were: temperature, relative humidity, and wind speed; recorded through a portable weather station, brand Skymaster, Model SM-28, at distances: 0 m (shade), 5 m, 10 m and 15 m (sun) from the shaft of the tree, at 10:00 h, 12:00 h and 14:00 h. The characterization of thermal comfort was based on the heat index and Olgyay bioclimatic chart adapted for hot climates. All variables were considered in the space affected by the tree effect and analyzed statistically. Regarding the heat index, the mean of the study was 34±1.1°C, categorized as "extreme caution", while in the wet period from october to december the average was close to the category: "caution". There were also observed attenuations of 0.5°C and 2°C between the shade and the sun, with probabilities of 0.76 and 0.53, respectively. Of the studied species, Mangueira contributed the most to attenuations of 0.5ºC (p=0.92) and 2ºC (p=0.67). The dry period was analyzed particularly as being considered thermally critical, with prominence of the species Oiti, Mangueira and Sibipiruna. Regarding the thermal comfort it was shown by the chart of Olgyay that in shade comfort can be reached providing winds higher than 1ms-1. From the results can be inferred positive effects of all the trees present in the urban arborization with the characteristics of the studied species.

Arquitetura bioclimática e a obra de Severiano Porto: estratégias de ventilação natural / Bioclimatic architecture and Severiano Porto’s work: natural ventilation strategies

Neves, Leticia de Oliveira 30 October 2006 (has links)
Bioclimatic architecture consists in minimizing the impacts of an intervention on the environment and obtaining a close relationship between building and nature. This research emphasizes the importance of natural ventilation as a cooling resource for hot and humid climates, contributing for the study of project strategies that adjust to local context and environment. Analyses the natural ventilation strategies used by the architect Severiano Porto in his buildings, since it is an important kind of solution to obtain thermal comfort in tropical hot and humid weather. It presents the discussion and analysis of three of his main works, placed in the city of Manaus, and the efficiency of the different solutions proposed. The analysis is divided in two steps: first a qualitative and descriptive analysis, based on project examination, where the incorporation of bioclimatic concepts in the buildings is verified and the natural ventilation solutions are identified; followed by a quantitative analysis, based on field studies and measurement of the variables temperature, humidity and air velocity. The result analysis was based on the Mahoney and ASHRAE Standard 55-2004 methods, and data obtained in specialized literature. Natural ventilation strategies could be identified, either cross as stack, allowing a detailed evaluation of performance of the three buildings. The research contributes on the improvement of the architectonic solutions on natural ventilation, on the purpose of valuing the use of passive energy strategies in architecture. Valorizes also Porto’s contribution to the development of an architecture that is attentive to bioclimatic principles.

This work presents an analysis of the relationship between the performance of split, fixed and inverter air conditioning equipment for the air conditioning of a commercial building in the different Brazilian bioclimatic zones. Analyzes were performed by computer simulation using the EnergyPlus program. Eight cases followed by the reference model were simulated. The reference model adopted was created from a photographic survey of standard commercial buildings with more than four floors. From this survey, the typology that was adopted represents a ten-storey building with a perimeter of dimensions of 27 by 7.50 meters and, at the foot of 2.60 meters. In order to analyze the energy performance of the reference model, data were included on the building components, occupancy pattern, energy loads of the lighting system and equipment, air conditioning, with their respective performance curves, as supplier, and infiltration, according to norm. With these data inserted in the EnergyPlus, it was possible to measure the thermal load of the air conditioning equipment and their energy performance, analyzed through the simulated annual COP of this equipment. With the simulation, it was possible to highlight the factors that influence the energy consumption of an air conditioning system with regard to climatic conditions, mainly the impact of external temperature on the performance of the equipment. In the results, it was possible to identify that there is a significant influence, especially when comparing high temperature and external low temperature regions, and in a second moment, high and low values of internal relative humidity of the ambient air, high performance favors the performance of the equipment evaluated. Significant results were found in the replacement of fixed split devices with split inverter devices, in which a reduction of up to 44% of savings was achieved in specific regions of the country, its annual simulated COP showed a more efficient indicator at all simulated hours.

Enjeux de la simulation pour l'étude des performances énergétiques des bâtiments en Afrique sub-saharienne / Challenges of simulation for buildings energy performance survey in Sub-Saharan Africa

Kaboré, Madi 27 January 2015 (has links)
In sub-Saharan African countries, the energy context, the high urban growth, inadequate construction techniques and climate offer great potential for bio-climatic approach and sustainable construction particularly on the energy level. However, this potential and the use of passive cooling techniques are weakly explored. To do so, it requires a good knowledge of building’s behaviour and their adaptation to the climatic context. As part of our contribution to this issue, a study on the thermal behaviour of buildings is initiated by numerical simulation. Indeed the building’s energy performance simulation tools are becoming more essential in the building’s design processes and analysis. Investigations are conducted on a building built with typical materials in Burkina Faso by following two main approaches. In the first approach a model of the building is faced with measurements from field experiments on the building. A calibration methodology based on the sensitivity analysis and optimization has been applied for the comparison of results. This helped to calibrate the model and diagnostic studies are performed. In the second approach, investigations on methods which can help to improve the building performance are realized through the application building performance simulation as a design aid tool. Interoperability and optimization techniques are used to deal with passive cooling techniques and their impacts on the building thermal behaviour are assessed. Finally in this work analysis techniques and performance criteria are used to characterize and make recommendations on building designs for the tropical climate context.
