Perceived exertion relationships and prediction of peak oxygen uptake in able-bodied and paraplegic individuals

Rating of Perceived Exertion (RPE) relates to how ‘hard’ or ‘easy’ an exercise feels. The Borg 6-20 RPE scale is the most widely used scale to estimate the overall, peripheral and central perception of effort. To date, there are a limited number of studies on the use and efficacy of perceived exertion in persons with spinal cord injury and/or disease. The findings from these studies are also equivocal. Therefore, the aims of this thesis were to assess: i) the relationship between the RPE and physical and physiological markers of exercise intensity during arm cranking exercise in able-bodied and individuals with spinal cord disease, ii) the efficacy of sub-maximal RPE values to predict peak oxygen uptake during arm cranking exercise in able-bodied and paraplegic individuals using different exercise protocols, iii) the scalar property of the RPE during arm cranking exercise in able-bodied and paraplegic individuals. To achieve these goals, the thesis has been broken down to a series of seven studies. In each of these studies, except study 6, a group of able-bodied and a group of paraplegic participants were recruited to asses these hypotheses. Paraplegic individuals had spinal cord injury with neurological levels at or below the sixth thoracic vertebra (T6) or flaccid paralysis as a result of poliomyelitis infection. These individuals were physically active and participated in sports like wheelchair basketball, weightlifting, wheelchair racing and table tennis at both professional and recreational levels. Able-bodied participants were healthy and free from pre-existing injuries and physically active but not arm-trained. There were strong relationships between the RPE and each of the physiological and physical indices of exercise intensity during arm cranking exercise regardless of group or gender. Peak oxygen uptake can be predicted with reasonable accuracy from sub-maximal oxygen uptake values elicited during a sub-maximal perceptually-guided, graded exercise test for paraplegic individuals but not for able-bodied participants. It has also been shown that peak oxygen uptake can be predicted from power output using the equation prescribed by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM, 2006). Furthermore, for able-bodied participants using estimation procedures, a passive process in which an individual is asked to rate how ‘hard’ or ‘easy’ an exercise feels, the ramp exercise test provided more accurate prediction of peak oxygen uptake compared to the graded exercise test. For paraplegic persons using estimation procedures, the graded exercise test provided more accurate prediction of peak oxygen uptake compared to the ramp exercise test. Finally, the scalar property of the RPE (i.e., similar proportions of time at a given RPE) was evident during arm cranking exercise regardless of group. In conclusion, the prediction of peak oxygen uptake from sub-maximal exercise tests would provide a safer environment of exercise testing. In addition, using a sub-maximal protocol would make peak oxygen uptake more available for sedentary and clinical population compared to the graded exercise test to volitional exhaustion. Prediction of peak oxygen uptake from power output using the ACSM equation would make the estimation of peak oxygen uptake more available for large groups of people. Similar proportions of time were observed at a given RPE regardless of group or exercise intensity. The early RPE responses will give an indicator for how long a participant is going to exercise. This has important implications for rehabilitation settings. Based on the RPE responses the tester or the observer can increase or decrease the work rate to enable the participant to exercise for the desired duration.

The Solipsism of Daily Experience and the Unequal Body: The Social Construction of Ableness

This is a theoretical and exploratory study of the social construction of the lived experience I am calling "ableness."  Through the repetition of behaviors and practices performed by able-bodied people, the representation of the able body has come to appear natural and unconsciously taken for granted, as they do not have to think about their bodies in interaction with everyday objects. I argue that this able-bodied solipsism is heightened in advanced industrial societies where discourses and practices created by Human-Factors Engineering compile knowledge based on the assumption that the able body is the norm. This knowledge is then employed in the fabrication of everyday items. Through an examination of theoretical perspectives on impaired bodies, a history of human-factors engineering, and an ethnography of how able bodies interact with their everyday surroundings, I intend to uncover the assumptions underlying the social construction of "ableness" and able-bodied solipsism.

Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento CientÃfico e TecnolÃgico / A populaÃÃo de abelhas vem declinando em todo mundo, e abelhas de grande porte, por necessitarem de maiores provimentos de alimento estÃo sendo mais afetadas pelas alteraÃÃes ambientais. Isso cria a necessidade de desenvolvermos alternativas e programas de conservaÃÃo para essas abelhas. AlteraÃÃes no tamanho corporal servem como indicativo desse declÃnio populacional. Dessa forma essa pesquisa teve como objetivo verificar mudanÃas no tamanho corporal das abelhas, principalmente nas abelhas de grande porte, como à o caso do gÃnero Bombus e desenvolver iniciativas de criatÃrio racional para conservaÃÃo da espÃcie nativa Bombus brevivillus gerando novas informaÃÃes à respeito dessa espÃcie que tem sido pouco estudada no Nordeste brasileiro. Dentre as milhares de espÃcimes presentes no Naturalis Museu, na Holanda, nÃs mensurados 4510, divididos em 18 espÃcies diferentes, aproximadamente 250 indivÃduos por espÃcie, entre machos e fÃmeas e distribuÃdos entre os anos de 1866 e 2013. NÃs tambÃm descrevemos o comportamento de nidificaÃÃo e as caracterÃsticas da colÃnia de B. brevivillus no estado do CearÃ, Brasil, e transferimos quatro colÃnias para caixas de madeira que permitiam o seu criatÃrio racional. NÃs obtemos informaÃÃes sobre os tipos polÃnicos utilizados, o padrÃo de forrageamento, a coleta de recursos, a influÃncia das variaÃÃes climÃticas nas atividades externas das operÃrias e sobre o desenvolvimento e estabelecimento das colÃnias em caixas racionais. Os resultados sugerem que 18 espÃcies de abelhas estudadas estÃo se tornando menores ao longo do tempo, sendo essa reduÃÃo no tamanho maior em fÃmeas de grande porte. Com relaÃÃo à abelha nativa B. brevivillus, as observaÃÃes mostraram que esta espÃcie parece ser oportunista em ralaÃÃo aos locais de nidificaÃÃo e proteÃÃo das crias e nÃo investe muito na construÃÃo do ninho e na proteÃÃo da prole. As colÃnias produziram um excelente nÃmero de operÃrias, que apresentaram, atà mesmo em caixas racionais, um intenso forrageamento e completaram seu ciclo normalmente, caracterÃsticas que podem ser Ãteis para fins de polinizaÃÃo comercial. / The bee population is declining around the world, and the big bodies bees, that require larger food provisions are particularly more affected by environmental changes. This creates the need to develop alternatives and conservation programs for these bees. Changes in body size are indicative of population decline. Thus, the objective of study was to verify the changes in body size of the bees, especially big bodied bees like the Bombus genus and develop rational breeding initiatives for conservation of native species Bombus (Thoracobombus) brevivillus generating new information about this species that is little studied in the Brazilian Northeast. We measured a total of 4510 specimens, of 18 different species, approximately 250 specimens per specie, equally divided over males and females and more or less regularly distributed over the entire study period (1866-2013). We also describe for the first time the nesting behavior and the colony of Bombus (Thoracobombus) brevivillus, and transferred four colonies to rational breeding boxes, to obtain information about pollen types used, foraging behavior, the resources collect, about the colonies development in rational breeding and the influence of climatic variations to the external activities of workers. Our results suggest that bees are becoming smaller over time, and larger species are more being more affected. About our native bumble bee B. brevivillus the observations showed that this specie seems to be opportunistic in relation to nesting sites and brood protection and does not invest much in nest building and offspring protection. Bombus brevivillus invest heavily in brood production and colony development, before producing reproductive individuals. Therefore, the colonies produce a great number of workers, a trait that could be useful for commercial pollination purposes.

Undersökningen byggde på en kvantitativ metod där resultatet baserades på enkätsvar från fyra olika skolor och totalt 114 svarande elever. Intresset för att fortsätta arbeta som matros var något större än att arbeta som motorman. Majoriteten av de tillfrågade eleverna planerade vidare studier medan endast ett fåtal av de tillfrågade planerade att enbart fortsätta arbeta som matros och motorman. Närmare 80 % av de tillfrågade var intresserade av att söka arbete utomlands. Many students planed further studies and the question is how the shipping business should secure the growth of Swedish merchant marine seamen?</p>

Sob o signo do aprofundamento e da intensificação da consciência de si, o ato filosófico de Pierre Thévenaz se define como uma filosofia radicalizante. E porque não abre mão e nem elide o lócus de resposta do qual seu ato filosófico toma sua consistência própria que é o da tradição protestante pode receber o complemento (protestante). Assim, uma filosofia radicalizante (protestante). Isso porque a secularização da filosofia, a que seu método de radicalização leva de modo conseqüente, já pressupõe a assunção da própria contingência que é consciência de condição. Consciência de que se fala de algum lugar; consciência de que o pensamento se encontra previamente engajado em um específico hic et nunc que, por conta da condição, recebe sua densidade própria e não pode mais ser cotado no trato das formas abstratas do tempo e do espaço. O que já é um dos índices da superação thévenaziana da redução da filosofia à epistemologia, tal como se tem estabelecido após Kant. Nesse sentido, a abertura plena à contingência pela radicalização forçará a mudança do problema do sentido, ligado pela fenomenologia à consciência intencional, para o problema da hermenêutica histórica. Quer dizer, para o da compreensão dos eventos significativos que têm poder de reorganizar em torno de si o movimento da história. Com a epoché do sentido, lançada sobre o núcleo mesmo do que a fenomenologia husserliana descobrira como a atividade própria da consciência intencional, assim, um passo decisivo no movimento de radicalização thévenaziana, só restará à razão filosófica (ao ser humano) tomar o sentido como tarefa por se fazer, inacabada e não garantida. Esse passo negativo, todavia, não recebe, em Pierre Thévenaz, o tom de palavra final, de última palavra. Pois se assim fosse, serviria ainda como álibi para a instauração de uma nova instalação. Desta vez tão segura no negativo quanto o era na ingenuidade otimística do sentido garantido. O qual permanecia na consciência intencional como ainda um último bastião de força e de atração, exercido sobre a consciência ingênua da atitude natural, sem ser superado. Isso porque agora a razão, já tendo alcançado um nível profundo de consciência de sua condição humana, de sua contingência, de sua fraqueza e equívoco sempre possíveis, para continuar sua atividade crítica costumeira, sua vocação mesma, deverá aprender a tirar força de sua fraqueza. A razão terá de se desdivinizar; de parar de tentar falar por Deus, ou pelos olhos de Deus; de parar de postular reduplicações de si como razão juiz ou razão instância não tocada pela crítica. Ela deverá assumir-se como estando em crise: assumir-se como humana, e humana só. Ora, esta possibilidade inusitada que se abre à própria razão pela radicalização, como vemos, não surge do nada. Ela representa, no inverso mesmo, outra possibilidade que à que Hegel estabeleceu na linha do horizonte e cuja atração exercida no interior do pensamento contemporâneo é bem mais sutil e presente do que parece. Por isso, será preciso desvencilhar a metafísica de certos comprometimentos históricos que a têm desacreditado, para se chegar ao seu mais autêntico núcleo afim à radicalização. Pelo que o signo da defesa da especificidade e da singularidade contra as categorias gerais continentes; o signo da defesa das irredutibilidades aos reducionismos, espiritualistas ou materialistas, será o que caracteriza, para Thévenaz, o movimento mais interno à metafísica ocidental. Este signo é o do espaço ontológico que a metafísica, descoberta por Platão, esclarece a necessidade de que seja mantido entre as grandezas em relação. Todavia, para ativar o que esta descoberta, neutralizada sob a lógica auto contida de uma razão autista, poderia auferir em termos de aprofundamento da consciência de condição, será necessário um apoio externo à razão. E este ela o recebe da experiência choque de imputação de loucura sobre ela que a fé cristã primitiva lançou. E não sendo possível à razão avaliar a justeza de tal imputação, pois não se trata de mais um argumento lógico com o qual ela jogar o seu jogo, a razão é levada a verificar por si mesma a pertinência de tal possibilidade.
