Reichenbachia, Imperial Edition: Rediscovering Frederick Sander’s Late-Victorian Masterpiece of Botanical Art

Borey, Erica 03 December 2013 (has links)
This thesis project examines the history, provenance, and contemporary treatment of a rare Imperial Edition of Frederick Sander’s print collection Reichenbachia, Orchids Illustrated and Described, a high-quality orchid compendium dating to the late-nineteenth century. A local philanthropist loaned the Imperial Edition Reichenbachia, number 86 of 100 to Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden in 2011 on a long-term basis as a promised donation. Research into the origins of this collection involves several disparate historical topics, including the Victorian period of “orchid mania,” imperialist business practices, and chromolithographic printmaking. Discussion of the transition of this collection into a museum art collection covers its consequent registration, conservation, and exhibition. Finally, this thesis project considers the advantages and disadvantages of managing an art collection at a botanical garden.

Bečovská botanická zahrada jako prostor pro výuku žáků ZŠ a MŠ / Bečovská Botanical Garden as a Space for Education of Nursery Schools Children and Pupils of Elementary Schools

Marešová, Renata January 2016 (has links)
TITLE: The Bečovská Botanical Garden as a Space for Education of Nursery Schools Children and Pupils of Elementary Schools ABSTRACT: The thesis titled The Bečovská Botanical Garden as a Space for Education of Nursery Schools Children and Pupils of Elementary Schools focuses on the use of this place for various forms of teaching and learning. I focused on the opportunity for tours and educational programs for natural history and botany in elementary school and kindergarten in the natural environment of the beautiful West Bohemian town in the restored botanical garden. In this work was carried out a short questionnaire survey amongst teachers who have visited Bečov's botanical garden with their students. Based on the processing of the questionnaire survey, I found out what would be appropriate to add to the educational tutorials and I created a worksheet and suggested activities that could be incorporated into various educational programs. I found out what options to various naturalistic activities the Bečov's botanical garden provides, where the teachers and students who have visited it are from, whether the teachers are satisfied with its teaching programs and whether the visit helped to create or consolidate respect for nature (for plants, animals, forests, lakes, meadow) and understanding the study that...

Sistemas hídricos do Jardim Botânico do Estado de São Paulo: uma experiência em educação para o meio ambiente / Water systems of the Botanical Garden of São Paulo: an experience in education to the environment

Fernandes, Sidney 17 March 2003 (has links)
The present work was developed to make up a model of environmental education at the botanical garden in São Paulo state, located at Parque Estadual Fontes do Ipiranga (PEFI). Due to the educational purpose, the project was developed with the support of two teachers of basic teaching and with researchers from Nucleo de Educação Ambiental of Botanical Garden of São Paulo state and the Section of Ecology and Phycology of Botanical Institute. The pattern considered four hybrid systems of PEFI: the source of Riacho do Ipiranga and the lakes of Nascentes, Ninféias and Bugios as basis for the making of order instruments to monitor the visits of teachers of Basic Teaching and their students to the botanical garden. As a base for the project, the environmental theme was broached as transversal to the classical subjects of the Brazilian Teaching System and the actions of the project were undertaken through the knowledge of different professionals about the environment that took part of the working group and, to the same work, it was tried the integration of actions to the real needs of the Teaching Staff of Basic Teaching. That way, the participation of two teachers from schools was essential around the Botanical Garden to organize the steps of the project. The studies of the area characterization were based in its historical and physical aspects such as sanitary quality of aquatic bodies that were considered. The physical-chemical and microbiological determination showed a satisfactory sanitary condition of the water, however, the total fecal coliform values found in the lakes suggest contamination of animal origin common in the region. The primary productivity was also determined for each aquatic body finding low chlorophyll values a in the three lakes and in the source. The kind of microscopical algae observed were Crysochromulina, Ankistrodemus, Scenesdemus, Cosmarium, Navicula, Eunotia, Cryptomonas, Closterium, Gomphonema, Pinnularia, Pleuroteanium, Arthrospira, Oedogonium, Euastrum, Monoraphidium, Mallomonas and Chlamydomonas kinds. According to Carlson\'s chart (Indice de Estado Trófico), the Nascente and the Lago das Nascentes are considered oligotrophic, while Bugios and Ninféias lakes are mesotrophic ones. The first project, a theoric-practical course, tried the integration of basic teaching teachers on themes related to the environment, particulary the ones of greater relevance to the professionals of the botanical garden. Afterwards, the teachers took part in the actions to form educative instruments for monitored visits to the Garden, what turned out into an elaboration of a teachers\' visit manual, which has a map of the area to be visited with explanations and sign boards. A course, to prepare Basic Education teachers on themes about the environment, was prepared for the nucleo de educação ambiental of the botanical garden which has photos and documents about the area which was researched, also, the criteria for the monitored visit and procedures to suit the Nascente do Riacho do Ipiranga for public visits. Finally, we must emphasize that the chosen theme for the achievement of this Master Essay had its origin from the understanding of the researchers at the Instituto de Botanica in outstanding the importance of the botanical garden through its hydric systems, and how they could be used as educational instrument in schools in São Paulo. This way, it was chosen to enrich the classical focus given to the botanical gardens all over the world, where most of visitors only watch the exotic and local vegetation. This way, we can say that the work that was done will be a contribution to the teacher with the purpose of inserting an environmental dimension in the varied subjects of the basic teaching.

Návrh rekonstrukce historického Beaufortského alpina v Bečově nad Teplou (Karlovarsko) / Proposal for reconstruction of the historic Beaufort rock garden in the Bečov nad Teplou town (district Karlovy Vary)

ŠPAKOVÁ, Markéta January 2012 (has links)
This thesis will build upon my undergraduate dissertation. It is enriched by the new information about the original historic Beaufort rock garden. It explores the Beaufort rock garden and includes points of view of the experts on its condition today. The following part of the thesis comprises of a proposal for a renewal of the current Bečov botanical garden framework and of a more detailed focus on few selected rocks and their initial planting. The main contribution of this work is an expansion of the total number of the initially grown plants (from 654 to 1228) thanks to the newly found resources and to the writing down all the newly discovered information from the archival research of the original historical documents dated from 1908 to 1937. All the documents were catalogued by the author of the original concept alpina, the head gardener Johann Koditek. What we do know from the original documentation is how the area expanded between the years 1922 - 1927 with the purchase of the surrounding land. It is clear that the expenses for the land were about 18 098,31crowns and for various works, building construction, plants, materials and wages the total sum was 468 336.07 crowns. The exact mounting plans for landscape park were rediscovered (10 plans and inventories in total) and 16 plans and inventories in total of 47 for the rock garden. The chart with the total number of the originally cultivated taxa also consists of the surviving taxa in the area (22 specific herb species + 43 specific tree species and 12 tree genera). The synonymy of the original plants was created for three selected rocks and surveyed their purchase options today. Most of the taxa will return back to the garden, only rock no. 8 will have to be planted differently due to the lack of light on the original plants. Keywords: origin

This study aims to identify the challenges that interfere with the implementation of a management system model for skills in a public institution. It was used as the case study approach, taking as a unit of analysis the Institute for Botanical Garden Research of Rio de Janeiro. The results confirmed the expectations built from the literature review and the empirical results obtained in national forums, according to which one of the major obstacles to the implementation lies in staff training face to innovative initiatives in public management and specific contingencies. It was concluded that these barriers impact the size of competence referred to want to do and is directly related to the behavior and the mobilization of the individual for action, requiring the development of public policies that encourage the development of attitudinal resources in individuals to face new and complex situations, especially within the public administration, which entails the creation of enabling environments in the ambience of public institutions

RETHINKING THE CRYSTAL PALACE. Adaptive reuse of an abandoned warehouse

COLLINETTI, SIMONE January 2020 (has links)
This Master Thesis work is about the rebirth of a warehouse, once part of Innocenti S.p.A. Located in the district of Lambrate, Milano, the factory used to cover an area of nearly 800.000 sqm back in the Nineties, it nowadays presents itself as a fragmented scenario. This work aims to be a testimony of the past, by first showing all the available official materials that were recovered right before everything shut down. As a second part, it suggests a proposal for one of the most iconic buildings left to a state of complete abandonment and self extinction: the warehouse now known as the Crystal Palace because of its present conditions. Accepting the conditions of one thing and enhancing them in a programmatic way, is probably a solution for dealing with our industrial archaeology, for an innovative, engaging and sustainable approach. An extension of the already existing park finds a new place under the original roof structure. In order to integrate the project in the surrounds from a sociological point of view, the community will be provided with new spaces for exhibition galleries and, moreover, the city of Milano will benefit of the first botanical garden in history.

Dzūkijos nacionalinio parko Liškiavos botanikos sodas: retų ir nykstančių augalų rūšių natūralizacijos galimybės / The botanical gardens of Liskiava in Dzukija National park: The possibilities of naturalization of rare and vanishing plants’ species

Baranauskas, Alius 10 June 2005 (has links)
PAPER The possibilities of naturalization of rare and vanishing plants’ species are surveyed in master’s study The subject of research - The botanical gardens of Liskiava with the rare and vanishing plants’ species cultured and naturalized there. Objective of the research – Naturalized species of the plants: Turk’s-cap (Lilium martagon), medicinal angelica (Angelica archangelica), perennial satinflower (Lunaria rediviva), and ivy bedstraw (Hedera helix). Also the naturalization in site of rare plants is observed and estimated. Methods of study – Some studied plants were brought from their natural vegetation places, digging out it with the thickness of soil, some of then were sown from seeds: macro bloom finger-flower (Digitalis grandiflora), meadowy salvia (Salvia pratensis). The naturalization of these plants and capability to proliferate is also observed. Ecologist of Dzukija National park, Henrikas Gudavicius conduced to pursue the observation and researches, also rendered comprehensive information about the botanical gardens of Liskiava. Such possibilities of naturalization of rare and vanishing plants’ species were no studied in Lithuania. The conclusion could be done under the results of research: rare plants can be naturalized, just the proper place must be chosen and the observation is necessary during the first year. Keywords: National park of Dzukija, The botanical gardens of Liskiava, rare and vanishing plants’ species, naturalization.

Fotografia e interação no Jardim Botânico: uma abordagem do design de participação em contexto museológico / Photography and interaction at the Botanical Garden: an approach of designing for participation within a museological context

Juliano Caldeira Kestenberg 04 April 2014 (has links)
A matéria de contribuição dos alunos participantes é a fotografia produzida a partir do uso de dispositivos móveis / A participatory culture is emerging amid the fast propagation of media technologies that make it possible to produce, archive, appropriate and recirculate informational content. A collaboration logic is observed, made feasible by technical tools that structure the networked knowledge. In this context, the museum performs an effort in order to update itself as an agency of sociocultural representation. In this thesis, we maintain that the social participatory interaction is a path to renew and expand the cultural narratives developed by museums, in respect to its communicational relationship with the audience. Therefore, a system called Reveal was devised: a preliminary model which aims at investigating participation design within a museological context. The system, which is located in Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden, presupposes the participation of high school students in an activity elaborated by the Environment Museum team. Participants contribute with photographs captured with mobile devices.
