Disturbance monitoring in distributed power systemsGlickman, Mark January 2007 (has links)
Power system generators are interconnected in a distributed network to allow sharing of power. If one of the generators cannot meet the power demand, spare power is diverted from neighbouring generators. However, this approach also allows for propagation of electric disturbances. An oscillation arising from a disturbance at a given generator site will affect the normal operation of neighbouring generators and might cause them to fail. Hours of production time will be lost in the time it takes to restart the power plant. If the disturbance is detected early, appropriate control measures can be applied to ensure system stability. The aim of this study is to improve existing algorithms that estimate the oscillation parameters from acquired generator data to detect potentially dangerous power system disturbances. When disturbances occur in power systems (due to load changes or faults), damped oscillations (or "modes") are created. Modes which are heavily damped die out quickly and pose no threat to system stability. Lightly damped modes, by contrast, die out slowly and are more problematic. Of more concern still are "negatively damped" modes which grow exponentially with time and can ultimately cause the power system to fail. Widespread blackouts are then possible. To avert power system failures it is necessary to monitor the damping of the oscillating modes. This thesis proposes a number of damping estimation algorithms for this task. If the damping is found to be very small or even negative, then additional damping needs to be introduced via appropriate control strategies. This thesis presents a number of new algorithms for estimating the damping of modal oscillations in power systems. The first of these algorithms uses multiple orthogonal sliding windows along with least-squares techniques to estimate the modal damping. This algorithm produces results which are superior to those of earlier sliding window algorithms (that use only one pair of sliding windows to estimate the damping). The second algorithm uses a different modification of the standard sliding window damping estimation algorithm - the algorithm exploits the fact that the Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) within the Fourier transform of practical power system signals is typically constant across a wide frequency range. Accordingly, damping estimates are obtained at a range of frequencies and then averaged. The third algorithm applied to power system analysis is based on optimal estimation theory. It is computationally efficient and gives optimal accuracy, at least for modes which are well separated in frequency.

This PhD thesis deals with the comparative study of words containing bound morphological stems in English and Modern Greek (MG) and their computational processing. A great number of these words, also known as neoclassical compounds, belong to technical and scientific terminologies. The linguistic database used for the theoretical analysis and the computational processing proposed in this study, consists of two corpora, especially built for and appended in the current study, containing bound stems as final elements in words of English and MG. According to the theoretical analysis proposed, compounds with bound stems in the two languages share similar structures. The proposed system for the computational processing of these words, based on the the conclusions of the theoretical analysis, makes use of finite state methods, specifically the Xerox Lexical Compiler (LEXC) and offers an efficient way of implementing the phenomenon of neoclassical compounding in modern languages.

Utbildning för hållbar utveckling ur ett lärarperspektiv : Ämnesbundna skillnader i gymnasieskolan / Education for sustainable development from a teacher’s perspective : Subject-bound differences in upper secondary schoolBorg, Carola January 2011 (has links)
This thesis investigates how teachers from different disciplines understand and implement education for sustainable development in their teaching. A nationwide questionnaire study was conducted with 3229 upper secondary school teachers representing 224 schools in Sweden. The concept of sustainable development is complex and research has shown that teachers exhibit uncertainties in their understanding of it, and that the way they conceptualize sustainable development can have consequences for how they incorporate it into their teaching. Previous research has emphasized that Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) should promote interdisciplinary and holistic learning rather than traditional subject-based learning. This is in accordance with the Swedish curriculum, which emphasizes that all teachers in all subjects should integrate education for sustainable development. The teachers in the study were grouped into four disciplines; science-, social science-, language-, and vocational/esthetical-practical teachers. The results showed that there were many subject-bound barriers to successful implementation of ESD. Teachers were influenced by their subject tradition in: 1) how they understand sustainable development, 2) which teaching methods they use, 3) which barriers they experience, and 4) which teaching tradition they work within. Because of these differences it is important to adjust any further training of teachers according to their discipline. This study highlights the need for improved teacher education and further training of in-service teachers; more than 70% of the teachers stated that they need such training. It also highlights the issue how strong subject-bound traditions make it difficult to implement general goals of the curricula such as sustainable development.

A priori estimates for nonlinear problems of heat conduction with the use of Kirchhoff transform.Eduardo Dias Corrêa 29 April 2014 (has links)
Nestes casos, a metodologia proposta neste trabalho
This article presents an a priori upper bound estimate for the steady-state
temperature distribution in a body with a temperature-dependent thermal
conductivity. The discussion is carried out assuming linear boundary conditions
(Newton law of cooling) and a piecewise constant thermal conductivity (when
regarded as a function of the temperature). These estimates consist of a
powerful tool that may circumvent an expensive numerical simulation of a
nonlinear heat transfer problem, whenever it suffices to know the highest
temperature value. In these cases the methodology proposed in this work is
more effective than the usual approximations that assume thermal
conductivities and heat sources as constants.

Numerous studies were carried out on the fate of PAHs in soil and in plant rhizosphere and highlighted the major contribution of biodegradation processes and of the sorption to soil constituents. However, a lack of knowledge remains about the fate of PAHs in the soil and especially their location in soil compartments as well as the nature and the behavior of degradation products. The main objectives of the thesis were: (a) to localize PAHs and their derived products within soil compartments (organic matter, minerals, microorganisms and plant), and (b) to quantify and identify the organic compounds forming bound residues. For this purpose, we used two approaches: (i) the monitoring of a labeled PAH, the 13C-phenanthrene (13C-PHE), in a spiked soil planted or not to determine by IRMS and NanoSIMS the 13C-distribution into compartments and to identify derived compounds of 13C-PHE by 13C-RMN et TD/pyGCMS. (ii) the distribution and localization of aged and freshly spiked PAH contamination in a brownfield soil to study the impact of organic matter and minerals (using soil densimetric fractionation) in the PAH retention. More than 40% of C from 13C-PHE remained in the soil after 14 days of ryegrass growth. The 13C-enrichment in plant tissue was similarly to the soil enrichment (E13C ≈ 0.04 at.%) indicating uniform uptake of 13C-PHE between the soil and plant. NanoSIMS images acquired for roots confirmed this global enrichment in the plant. 13C-Hospots were also observed in the rhizosphere, and on the basis on their size, their shape and their elemental composition in C, N and S, they were identified as bacteria, which emphasize their contribution to the fate of PAHs in soil. In the industrial soil, most of the PAHs were found attached to the free OM. However, the freshly spiked PAHs in the soil were significantly associated with organo-mineral associations containing quartz, feldspars and phyllosilicates

[en] OPTIMAL MONETARY POLICY IN A GLOBAL LIQUIDITY TRAP / [pt] POLÍTICA MONETÁRIA ÓTIMA EM UMA ARMADILHA DA LIQUIDEZ GLOBALBERNARDO CALVENTE 18 October 2017 (has links)
[en] What should be the characteristics of the optimal monetary policy under commitment in the situation of a global liquidity trap when Central Banks do not coordinate their actions? Using a two-country open economy model, we perform a numerical exercise in order to address this question and study the differences between this setting and a cooperative situation, when monetary authorities are not only worried with the national household utility, but instead maximize a measure of world welfare. Our findings points towards differences of history and international dependence features of optimal monetary prescriptions in each of the observed cases. We also execute a welfare analysis of our experiment that suggests that a local Central Bank prefers, not only to stay restrained by zero lower bound (ZLB) on nominal interest rates for a longer period, but also that the foreign country exists this situation as early as possible. Lastly, we make a robustness analysis of our results varying the size of each nation and the degree of substitution of the composite goods produced in each locality.

Dynamics of few-cluster systems.Lekala, Mantile Leslie 30 November 2004 (has links)
The three-body bound state problem is considered using configuration-space Faddeev equations within the framework of the total-angular-momentum representation. Different
three-body systems are considered, the main concern of the investigation being the
i) calculation of binding energies for weakly bounded trimers, ii) handling of systems
with a plethora of states, iii) importance of three-body forces in trimers, and iv) the
development of a numerical technique for reliably handling three-dimensional integrodifferential
equations. In this respect we considered the three-body nuclear problem, the
4He trimer, and the Ozone (16 0 3 3) system.
In practice, we solve the three-dimensional equations using the orthogonal collocation
method with triquintic Hermite splines. The resulting eigenvalue equation is handled
using the explicitly Restarted Arnoldi Method in conjunction with the Chebyshev polynomials to improve convergence. To further facilitate convergence, the grid knots are distributed quadratically, such that there are more grid points in regions where the potential is stronger. The so-called tensor-trick technique is also employed to handle
the large matrices involved. The computation of the many and dense states for the Ozone case is best implemented using the global minimization program PANMIN based
on the well known MERLIN optimization program. Stable results comparable to those of other methods were obtained for both nucleonic and molecular systems considered. / Physics / D.Phil. (Physics)

Ambulatory motion capture is of great interest for applications ranging for the monitoring of elderly people, sporty performances monitoring, functional rehabilitation, etc. These applications require that the movement is not constrained by an external system, that it can be performed in different situations, including outdoor environment. It requires lightweight and low cost equipment; it must be truly ambulatory without complex process of calibration.Currently, only systems using an exoskeleton or inertial modules (often combined with magnetic modules) can be used in such situations. Unfortunately, the exoskeleton weight is not affordable and it imposes constraints on the movements of the person, which makes it unusable for certain applications such as monitoring of the elderly.Inertial technology is lighter. Itcan be used for the capture of movement without constraints on the capture space or on the movements. However, it suffers from gyros drift, and the system must be recalibrated. The objective of this thesis is to develop a system of motion capture for an articulated chain, low-cost, real-time truly ambulatory that does not require specific capture infrastructure, that can be used in many application fields (rehabilitation, sport, leisure, etc.).We focus on intra-corporal measurements. Thus, all sensors are placed on the body and no external device is used. In addition to a final demonstrator to validate the proposed approach, we also develop tools to evaluate the system in terms of technology, number and position of sensors, but also to evaluate different algorithms for data fusion. To do this, we use the Cramer-Rao lower bound. \\The subject is multidisciplinary. It addresses aspects of modelling and design of fully ambulatory hybrid systems. It studies estimation algorithms adapted to the field of motion capture of a whole body by considering the problem of observability of the state and taking into account the biomechanical constraints that can be taken into account. Thus, with an appropriate treatment, the pose of a subject can be reconstructed in real time from intra-body measurements.
