Studies in Corpora and Idioms : Getting the cat out of the bagMinugh, David January 2014 (has links)
“Idiomatic” expressions, usually called “idioms”, such as a dime a dozen, a busman’s holiday, or to have bats in your belfry are a curious part of any language: they usually have a fixed lexical (why a busman?) and structural composition (only dime and dozen in direct conjunction mean ‘common, ordinary’), can be semantically obscure (why bats?), yet are widely recognized in the speech community, in spite of being so rare that only large corpora can provide us with access to sufficient empirical data on their use. In this compilation thesis, four published studies focusing on idioms in corpora are presented. Study 1 details the creation of and data in the author’s medium-sized corpus from 1999, the 3.7 million word Coll corpus of online university student newspapers, with comparisons to data from standard corpora of the time. Study 2 examines the extent to which recognized idioms are to be found in the Coll corpus and how they can be varied. Study 3 draws upon the British National Corpus and a series of British and American newspaper corpora to see how idioms may be “anchored” in their contexts, primarily by the device of premodification via an adjective appropriate to the context, not to the idiom. Study 4 examines idiom-usage patterns in the Time Magazine corpus, focusing on possible aspects of diachronic change over the near-century Time represents. The introductory compilation chapter places and discusses these studies in their contexts of contemporary idiom and corpus research; building on these studies, it provides two specific examples of potential ways forward in idiom research: an examination of the idioms used in a specific subgenre of newspapers (editorials), and a detailed suggestion for teachers about how to examine multiple facets of a specific modern idiom (the glass ceiling) in the classroom. Finally, a summing-up includes suggestions for further research, particularly at the level of the patterning of individual idioms, rather than treating them as a homogeneous phenomenon.

Estimation Of The Height Of Surface Breaking Cracks Using Ultrasonic Timing MethodsOzturk, Emre 01 April 2006 (has links) (PDF)
In this thesis, two ultrasonic timing methods are used in order to investigate the accuracy and reliability of measurements for surface breaking cracks having different orientations and heights. Also the best applicable measurement technique is searched by comparing the received test results. These methods are the Time of Flight Diffraction (TOFD) Method using diffraction of longitudinal waves and another method using the reflection of shear waves from the crack tips. In order to simulate and measure the height of surface breaking cracks three sets of test blocks from steel, and two sets of wedges from plexiglas material are manufactured. Also several probes having frequencies of 2Mhz, 4Mhz, 5Mhz and angles of 45o and 70o are used.
Some test procedures are created to make realistic comparisons between the test results and the ones found by previous studies in literature. The results are compared according to the standard deviations of errors in crack height
measurements and it is found that the depth, orientation of defects and the frequency of probes have considerable affect on the results. With wider probe angles and higher frequencies of probes to some extent the errors are observed
to be running low and the height of cracks could be measured closer to the original size. The amount of the errors is increased in measurements with the increasing angle of cracks. The results of both methods are found to be very
satisfactory. A range of ± / 0.5 mm for means of error from the original vertical crack heights is determined. The results agree with the previous studies.

Um estudo da quebra espontânea de simetria usando quartetos BRST / An study of spontaneous simmetry breaking using BRST quartetsDaniel Ernani Martins Neto 11 October 2012 (has links)
(ii) A simetria é quebrada.

Sleimen, Rita 07 December 2011 (has links)
In the present work we aimed at: (i) setting new conceptual foundations for bimanual movement training in stroke, and (ii) providing practical guidelines to appropriately design and test a comprehensive constraint-led bimanual rehabilitation strategy. In order to achieve these stated objectives, we adopted a proof-of-concept approach. The first part of the current manuscript includes a critical review of BMT literature on the basis of the theoretical principles and empirical findings of the dynamical systems approach. The second part reports the experimental work that was conducted to investigate this concept in healthy and in hemiparetic subjects. The first study investigated unimanual discrete rapid aiming, under different task conditions and for a wide range ID values. In the second study, the effect of task-induced inter-limb asymmetry on the expression of bimanual coupling was explored. The third study, addressed the issue of task- and stroke-induced asymmetries in patients with different degrees of impairments. Overall, experimental findings corroborated our initial hypotheses. It permitted the design of a new BMT strategy to (re)train stroke patient. This rehabilitation strategy and the on-going clinical protocol were presented in the third part of the thesis.Though voluntarily qualitative, our approach provided a preliminary proof of concept on how CVA- and task-induced inter-limb asymmetries should be taken into account in rehabilitation. The conclusions of our work along with the opened perspectives were discussed at the end of the manuscript.

Sites of Reactivity During Ligand-Exchange Reactions in Octahedral Group VIB Metal CarbonylsAsali, Khalil Jamil 12 1900 (has links)
The site of initial metal-carbonyl bond-breaking during ligand-exchange reactions in a series of octahedral metal carbonyls of the type (L2)M(CO)4 (M = Cr, Mo, W; L2 = diphos, phen, dipy) has been determined employing infrared spectroscopy and Fourier transform nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The results of this study reveal, for all metal carbonyl complexes of the type mentioned above, that loss of CO occurs exclusively at an axial position (cis to the bidentate ligand, I^)• The dynamic nature of the five-coordinate intermediates, such as (diphos)Mo(CO)3, (phen)M(CO)3 (M = Cr, Mo, W), and (dipy)Cr(CO)3, which are generated in solution upon CO dissociation, is reported and discussed. The results of this investigation confirm that these intermediates are fluxional on the time scale of CO-exchange process. A mechanism which describes the site of initial metal-carbonyl bond-breaking and the fluxionality of the five-coordinate intermediate during ligand-exchange reactions in the complexes (L2)M(CO)4 is proposed. A kinetic study of reactions of W(CO)6 with pseudo-halide anions (NCS-, NCO-, CN-) has been initiated. The results indicate that these reactions proceed via a bimolecular path, which involves initial attack of the pseudo-halide anion at a carbonyl carbon of W(CO)6,

Purpose: To evaluate the effect of the hyperbaric oxygen therapy on the healing of the esophagojejunal anastomosis in gastrectomized rats. Material and Methods: 40 Wistar rats male adults with weighing between 322g to 506g were operated. The animals were divided in two ramdom groups.20 rats from group A (control group), were submitted to total gastrectomy. In group B, 20 rats were equally gastrectomized and received postoperative treatment with hyperbaric oxygen for 90 minutes/day during seven days. All rats were sacrificed on the eighth postoperative day and evaluated according to the following study variables :a) whether there were any anastomotic fistula or not; b) evaluating esophagojejunal anastomosis healing by measuring breaking strength at the suture line as per Hendriks & Mastboom; c) determining of the collagen concentration on the anastomosis, as per Kovács criteria. For the comparative statistical analyses between the groups, Student’s “t” test was used, whereas p<0,05 was significant. Results: There was a 20% rate of deceasing in the sample, whereas 60% occurred in group A and 40% in group B (p=N.S.). There was only one anastomotic fistula in each group, and in neither one occurred any morbidity or deaths related. Breaking strength measured at the suture line (p=0,528) and collagen concentration determined at the esophagojejunal anastomosis (p=0,89) did not present any significant statistical difference in either group. Conclusions: By using clinical, mechanical and biochemical parameters to evaluate the esophagojejunal anastomosis, it was possible to conclude that, in this study, hyperbaric oxygen therapy did not interfere with the healing process of the anastomosis.

Previous issue date: 2017 / The objective of this work is apply bumblebee model, a spontaneously Lorentz symmetry breaking model due to a non-vanishing vacuum expectation value vector field, to a vacuum space. Results are presented for a radial/temporal Lorentz symmetry breaking in a Schwarzschild space. Also, it is verified an incompatibility between the hypothese of the universe to be homogenous in the absence of massive ordinary matter and the imposition of a parallelly transported bumblebee field in radial direction.

A large range of physical problems, from molecules to giant stars, contains rotating symmetry and can exhibit azimuthal waves or vibrations. When this symmetry is broken, the system can become unstable with chaotic behaviors. Symmetry breaking is investigated in annular combustors prone to azimuthal thermo-acoustic instabilities. First, theories reveal that two types of symmetry breaking exist : due to different burner types distributed along the chamber or due to the flow itself . It leads to frequency splitting, fixes the mode structure and can destabilize the configuration. A UQ analysis is also performed to quantify the symmetry breaking effect due to uncertainties of flame descriptions or behaviors. To complete theory, Large Eddy Simulations are performed on a single-sector as well as on a complete 360° configuration of the annular experiment of Cambridge. Numerical results are compared to experimental data showing a good agreement. In particular, an unstable azimuthal mode at 1800 Hz grows in both LES and experiment. However, LES cannot investigate the limit cycle because of its extreme cost. To tackle this problem, a new methodology is developed, called AMT, where theory or Helmholtz solver predictions are injected into LES or DNS. This method allows to study symmetry breaking, mode nature and dynamics as well as evaluating damping in realistic annular configurations.

Study of electroweak symmetry breaking through W W scattering at CERN CMS experiment.Diogo Buarque Franzosi 27 November 2007 (has links)
This work presents a study of W+W+ and W−W− scattering for the first years of the CMS experiment data-taking at LHC, CERN. Vector boson scattering, including WW, is a key processes for probing electroweak symmetry breaking. Theoretical predictions show that kinematics characteristics of vector boson scattering at T e V scale must strongly depend on the electroweak symmetry breaking mechanism. This process is analyzed with two main objectives: viability study of performing this measurement at CMS and show its dependence on the electroweak symmetry breaking mechanism. This dependence is shown through an analysis with two event samples corresponding to two distinct scenarios: the standard model with the presence of a 500 GeV massive Higgs boson and the standard model without presence of a Higgs boson. These samples were generated by the Monte-Carlo generator PHASE, whose main importance for vector boson scattering at high energies is its characteristic of calculating the complete matrix elements in leading
order O(α6). To analyze the viability of measuring the WW scattering at CMS, the simulated signal and background events were submitted to the CMS fast detector simulation, FAMOS. Background processes, WW+N jets, WZ+N jets, ZZ+N jets, W+N jets and tt+N jets, were studied and suppressed through kinematics region selection. Data analysis shows that the measurement of WW scattering in early stages of LHC will be very difficult, being necessary a larger luminosity, besides improvements on the analysis.
