Exploring hybridity in the 21st century : the working lives of South Asian ethnic minorities from a British born generation in Bradford

Rifet, Saima January 2015 (has links)
This thesis explores the working lives of British Born South Asian Ethnic Minorities (BB SAEMs), critiquing the homogenous identities ascribed to them in previous research. Its methodology is life-story interviews analysed using Nvivo. This identified four hybrid categories emerging from two cultures. I fitted myself neatly into just one. However the reflexive analysis required in good qualitative research led me to realise that I fitted into not one, but all four categories, and into others not yet recognised. At this point, my thesis had to take a new turn. An auto-ethnographic, moment-by-moment study led to an ‘unhybrid categorisation of hybridities’ acknowledging ‘fuzziness and mélange, cut ‘n’ mix, and criss and crossover’ where identity is a complex-mix, always in flux. I conclude not only with this new theory of identity formation in the working lives of BB SAEMs, but also by arguing that by imposing the requirement to categorise, research methods lead to over-simplification and misunderstanding.

Balzin, Eduard 20 June 2016 (has links)
The principal results comprising this work are:i. A generalisation of the Reedy model structure, which, in this work, is constructed for sections of a suitable family of model categories over a Reedy category. Unlike previous considerations, such as Hirschowitz-Simpson, we require as little as possible from the family, so that our result may be applied in situations when the transition functors in the family are non-linear in nature. ii. An extension of Segal formalism for algebraic structures to the setting of monoidal categories over an operator category in the sense of Barwick. We do this by treating monoidal structures using the language of Grothendieck opfibrations, and introduce derived sections of the latter using the simplicial replacements of Bousfield-Kan. Our Reedy structure result then permits to work with derived sections. iii. A proof of a certain homotopy descent result, which gives sufficient conditions on when an inverse image functor is an equivalence between suitable categories of derived sections. We show this result for functors which satisfy a technical ``Quillen Theorem A''-type property, called resolutions. One example of a resolution is given by a functor from the category of planar marked trees of Kontsevich-Soibelman, to the stratified fundamental groupoid of the Ran space of the $2$-disc. An application of the homotopy descent result to this functor gives us a new proof of Deligne conjecture, providing an alternative to the use of operads

The economics of information security

Dlamini, Moses Thandokuhle 20 September 2010 (has links)
In the year 2008, world markets suffered a huge economic crisis. The extent of the economic crisis has been so severe and has had a global impact. As a contingency strategy, governments of wealthy nations have resorted to extensive bailouts and rescue packages to stop organisations from going bankrupt. A skyrocketing amount of money has been spent on rescue packages and bailouts for the tumbling organisations. However, this could not stop some of the world’s wealthiest financial institutions e.g. Lehman Brothers, Northern Rock, etc from collapsing. Most of the surviving organisations froze their expenditure, implemented cost-cutting measures and in the process, numerous employees lost their jobs. Executives were compelled to ‘achieve more with less’ in order to save their organisations from going bankrupt. It is on this premise that this research proposed the BC3I (Broad Control Category Cost Indicators) model, which is a step towards ‘achieving more with less’ within information security budgeting. The tumbling world markets and increased requirements for legal and regulatory compliance have made this a timely and relevant research that addressed a current, spot-on and global problem. The BC3I model as the main outcome of this research has indeed come at the right time. The BC3I model as proposed in this research makes a real contribution towards assisting information security managers as they make informed decisions regarding the optimal and cost-effective allocation of financial resources to information security activities. The proposed model can be argued to be a good start towards the selection of appropriate controls to optimally and cost-effectively protect organisations’ information assets and simultaneously achieve compliance with legal and regulatory mandates. As a proof of concept, the practicality of the BC3I model has been demonstrated in three different scenarios. The model has been illustrated for an organisation chosen from the financial sector; being the hardest hit by the economic crisis. Furthermore, the financial sector is chosen because of its high reliance on information security for the most obvious reasons that of dealing with money and confidential customer information. Finally and for acceptance purposes, the model has been discussed and reviewed by industry experts from the financial sector. The technological knowledge used by technology education students in capability tasks

Rauscher, Willem Johannes 24 September 2009 (has links)
The inception of technology education as a learning area in the South African national curriculum has posed challenges different from those in the other learning areas. Technology education is, compared to subjects such as mathematics and science, still a fairly new subject both nationally and internationally. As a result technology education does not have a large research base or established subject philosophy. This can lead to problems in understanding the nature of technology and other pedagogical problems, such as the fragmentation of curricula in which content is simply parcelled in ‘departments’. One way through which technology can be conceptualized and understood is through technology as knowledge (epistemology). In the absence of an established subject philosophy for technology education, one can draw on frameworks from other disciplines in the field, such as engineering and design practice, for insights into technological knowledge. Educators, however, still need to determine the usefulness of these frameworks to technology education. The purpose of this study therefore, is to investigate the usefulness of an epistemological framework chiefly derived from engineering to be able to describe the nature of technological knowledge, in an attempt to contribute towards the understanding of this relatively new learning area. The conceptual framework for this study was derived mainly from Vincenti’s (1990) categories of knowledge and knowledge-generating activities based on his research into historical aeronautic engineering cases. A combination of quantitative and qualitative research was used to provide insight into the categories of knowledge and knowledge-generating activities used by students at the University of Pretoria during capability tasks. This included an analysis of the questionnaire (quantitative data), which was administered to and completed by the students, as well as a content analysis (qualitative data) of the students’ project portfolios. Findings from this study suggest that the conceptual framework chiefly derived from and used by professional engineers is useful in technology education. The findings also suggest that both the categories of technological knowledge and the knowledge generating activities apply to all the content areas, i.e. structures, systems and control, and processing, in technology education. The study recommends that researchers and educators deepen their understanding of the nature of technological knowledge by considering the categories of technological knowledge and the knowledge-generating activities presented in the conceptual framework. In order to “operationalise” the conceptual framework, educators must consciously attempt to include items of knowledge from each category of knowledge when conceptualising capability tasks for their learning programmes. The framework can then be used as a matrix to evaluate their learning programmes to ensure that all knowledge items (categories and activities) are addressed in each capability task in the technology learning programmes. / Thesis (PhD)--University of Pretoria, 2009. / Curriculum Studies / unrestricted

Bagnol, Marc 04 December 2014 (has links)
We study in this thesis a semiring structure with a product based on the resolution rule of logic programming. This mathematical object was introduced initially in the setting of the geometry of interaction program in order to model the cut-elimination procedure of linear logic. It provides us with an algebraic and abstract setting, while being presented in a syntactic and concrete way, in which a theoretical study of computation can be carried on. We will review first the interactive interpretation of proof theory within this semiring via the categorical axiomatization of the geometry of interaction approach. This interpretation establishes a way to translate functional programs into a very simple form of logic programs. Secondly, complexity theory problematics will be considered: while the nilpotency problem in the semiring we study is undecidable in general, it will appear that certain restrictions allow for characterizations of (deterministic and non-deterministic) logarithmic space and (deterministic) polynomial time computation.

Databáze XML pro správu slovníkových dat / XML Databases for Dictionary Data Management

Samia, Michel January 2011 (has links)
The following diploma thesis deals with dictionary data processing, especially those in XML based formats. At first, the reader is acquainted with linguistic and lexicographical terms used in this work. Then particular lexicographical data format types and specific formats are introduced. Their advantages and disadvantages are discussed as well. According to previously set criteria, the LMF format has been chosen for design and implementation of Python application, which focuses especially on intelligent merging of more dictionaries into one. After passing all unit tests, this application has been used for processing LMF dictionaries, located on the faculty server of the research group for natural language processing. Finally, the advantages and disadvantages of this application are discussed and ways of further usage and extension are suggested.

Praktické porovnání přístupů návrhů tlakových nádob v rámci ČSN EN 13445 / Practical comparison of pressure vessels design approaches within ČSN EN 13445

Procházka, Tomáš January 2020 (has links)
This diploma thesis deals with a practical comparison of pressure vessels design approaches within ČSN EN 13445. The thesis aimed to design the device using various approaches described in the European Standard and compare them. For the design was chosen a liquid filter, which works as the first stage of the filtration system in a waste-to-energy plant. In the first part of the thesis is introduced to different routes of design by analysis (DBA), including a description of plasticity conditions and finite element types. These theoretical knowledge are applied in the practical part. The practical part consists of designs of the pressure vessel according to different approaches and methods. The first approach is a design by formulae (DBF), which was done in software Visual Vessel Design. The second approach is DBA. This method of design can be realized according to the European Standard by two routes, either by Method base on the stress categories or so-called Direct Route. Both routes were performed in this work. Stress analyzes were made in programs ANSYS Workbench and NozzlePRO. At the end of the thesis, there is a comparison of used approaches and the resulting values of the design.

Sledování reakčních schopností u různých věkových kategorií judistů / Monitoring of reaction abilities in different age categories of judo athletes.

Buriánek, Adam January 2020 (has links)
Title: Monitoring of reaction abilities in different age categories of judo athletes Objectives: The aim of the thesis was to assess the influence of judo on the reaction abilities among different age groups of judo athletes. This finding should help to develop a view of necessity of focusing on reaction abilities during exercise unit. Methods: During the research a reactometer was used to capture simple and complex reaction time to visual stimulus and tactile response. Overall 166 individuals (100 men, 66 women) took part of the monitoring from which 3 were excluded. Every proband has undergone one test measurement (5 stimuls at least) and two evaluated ones (20 seconds each). The shorter - reaction time score was consider as a result for the particular test. The outcomes were utilized via Kruskal - Wallis test, Pearsons's and Spearman's correlation coefficient, Mann - Whitney's test and others. Results: The biggest difference between reaction period was observed between the age group of 8-10 and older groups. This category has also significantly differed in reaction period and the highest median. Statistically any notable difference was not confirmed among judo athletes and our control group in contrary with the situation between individual age categories. The hypothesis of judo athletes training...

Ten-year stability and variability, drinking patterns, and impairment in community youth with diagnostic orphan status of alcohol dependence

Grabitz, Maike, Behrendt, Silke, Klotsche, Jens, Buehringer, Gerhard, Lieb, Roselind, Wittchen, Hans-Ulrich January 2012 (has links)
Objective: Some adolescents and young adults who do not fulfill criteria for DSM-IV alcohol abuse (AA) report symptoms of DSM-IV alcohol dependence (AD) below the diagnostic threshold (diagnostic orphans, DOs; 1 or 2 symptoms). Contemporarily, little is known on the long-term stability, risk of progression to AD, impairment, and drinking patterns possibly associated with this status in the first decades of life. Aim: (1) To identify prevalence rates of the DO status from adolescence to early adulthood. To investigate (2) stability and variability of the DO status over time and (3) associations between DO status, drinking patterns and impairment in comparison to subjects with AA, with AD, or without any symptoms. Method: N = 2039 community subjects (aged 14–24 years at baseline) were assessed at baseline and at about four and ten years after baseline. DSM-IV AUD diagnoses were obtained with the DIA-X/M-CIDI. Results: About 11–12% of the sample was classified as DOs at all waves. Over a period of ten years, 18% of DOs were stable in their diagnosis and additional 10% progressed to AD. DOs were comparable to subjects with AA in drinking patterns, impairment and stability of diagnostic status. DOs progressed to AD significantly more often than AA. AD was associated with highest levels in all outcomes of interest. Conclusions: The DO status in adolescence and early adulthood is associated with considerable stability, risk of progression and problematic alcohol intake. In consequence, it can be meaningful for the timely identification of early stages of clinically relevant alcohol problems. For subjects with DO status early specific interventions are required.

Sundelin, Jennifer January 2021 (has links)
This essay is a qualitative close reading of Gul utanpå (Lundberg, 2013). This book is categorised as life-writing and labelled adoption memoire. The story unfolding in the book centers around Patrik Lundberg who is adopted from Korea to Sweden. In his story about travelling back to his birth country he shares new perspectives and emotional discoveries, poignantly writing about finding your roots for the first time. This is also a story about learning how to understand your own essence in a life previously lived before discovering your roots. This essay aims to analyse perspectives and categories of identity in adoption memoires by way of using an intersectional method of reading. Theories applied are on the one hand narratology by Mieke Bal and her ideas of focalisation, and on the other theories based on Louise M.Rosenblatt’s ideas concerning didactic reading strategies. The idea is to bring forward how this type of literature can be used as a tool for working with democratic values in school, such as human rights and cultural diversity. Hopefully this will expose the didactic potential of this particular type of book. Hypothetically, when a person who has yet not reached self discovery writes a book about discovering himself the story in itself gives the reader multiple opportunities to interpret various perspectives in a wider sense. The conclusion is that the theme of adoption enables a discussion about diversity and cultural diversity in the classroom. Reading such a memoire, or autobiography, also makes way for reflecting about one's own self construction. However, it also presents the reader with a chance to separate himself from the text in order to view it with the spectacles of an outsider.
