Glinskytė, Akvilė 03 July 2014 (has links)
Tombstones with angelic figures of historic Bernardinai cemetery in Vilnius are entered into the list of cultural heritage, as objects of Bernardinai cemetery ensemble. Ethnoarchaeological perspectives on the mortuary practices of Jordanian Bedouin

Whiteway, Autumn 13 October 2016 (has links)
The objective of this thesis is to enhance the archaeological visibility of mobile pastoralists in the southern Levant, accomplished through an ethnoarchaeological study of Bedouin mortuary practices in Jordan. Qualitative data, collected via 136 ethnographic interviews, and quantitative data, collected from 20 Bedouin cemeteries, are analyzed to distinguish the material residues of Bedouin funerary practices. Patterns in these data are investigated using a multi-scalar spatial model, to improve archaeological interpretations and produce a predictive model for locating the material signatures of mobile pastoralist mortuary practices in the southern Levant. This research yields results of high archaeological visibility, demonstrating that Bedouin mortuary practices leave behind a detectable material signature on the landscape. / February 2017

Take me to the river: an exploration of bringing the dead home

Tustin, Michelle 15 April 2016 (has links)
In contemporary North America, death is often responded to by means of geographical and social separation. Formally removed from the everyday lifeworld and boundaries of home and community, the cemetery landscape has depreciated greatly in its cultural significance and visible taking care. As changing death practices and perceptions towards mortality look to reintegrate the dead back into the living community, traditional ways of locating, memorializing and ritualizing the dead no longer reflect or express the meaning of death held by modern cultural ideals. This research looks to investigate how landscape architecture may re-imagine the cemetery landscape providing newfound cultural significance and presence within the modern everyday lifeworld. In the City of Brandon, Manitoba, the limited interment capacity of the current Municipal cemetery has established a need for expanded cemetery space. This practicum proposes rather, to relocate the cemetery within a place of meaningful significance to the community of Brandon. The design responds to the shifting ideals, and patterns of disposal and ritualization emerging within present western society. / May 2016

Craftwork

Shepherd, Nathalie 16 May 2008 (has links)
Chronologically I have described the different environments that I have been exposed to in the past five years and how my interactions with the different locations have affected my work. I started writing about what I was doing a year after finishing my undergraduate degree, when I started to feel as though I needed to re-invent my work in a way that also meant trying to see the process of creating art differently. I didn't know yet how this new work would begin to generate, or what would inspire it, but I knew that I was seeking a studio practice that would be personal enough to sustain a lifetime of exploration. In the end I found the inspiration had always been all around me.

Kultura pohřbívání Západního světa v kontextu společensko-politických proměn / Burial culture in the Western world in the context of sociopolitical transformation

Hupková, Martina January 2013 (has links)
This dissertation is focused on changes in burial culture in the modern and post-modern era resulting from the introduction of cremation as a new part of burial practices in Western countries. Its aim is to analyze changes in burial culture in the context of social and political developments and through their physical effects on the landscape. In order to evaluate contemporary burial culture in the Western world, the main cause of changes in burial culture was first separately analyzed as a phenomenon that appeared (the conditions for the origins of cremation) and expanded in geographical space (the circumstances under which cremation was adapted in Western countries). The diffusion of innovations theory is used, which is capable of describing and interpreting the process of introducing cremation in its modern form. In the second phase of research, specific manifestations of changes in burial culture caused by the introduction of cremation are examined based on case studies conducted in the field. In the following part of the dissertation findings are generalized, and how the perception and function of cemeteries have changed due to the influence of changes in burial culture and how the significance of the concept of the deathscape - landscapes and places whose appearance and relationships are...

Non-elite mortuary variability in the Early Dynastic Memphis region

Janulíková, Barbora January 2018 (has links)
No settlement remains at Early Dynastic Memphis, the first ‘capital’ of the newly emerging Egyptian state, have yet been located. This study draws together exclusive evidence from three well-known non-elite Memphite cemeteries Saqqara-Serapeum, Turah and the recently excavated site of Helwan (all dating from 3200 to 2700 BC) to explore the society of this early urban centre through its funerary remains. The study engages in statistical analyses of cemetery data comparing grave parameters such as volume, quantity of grave goods, their materials and pottery vessel types, but also architecture, body protection, skeletal sex and the age of the deceased across sites. The application of statistical hypothesis testing techniques forms a methodological cornerstone highlighting some pitfalls of mortuary analyses rooted in Processual theoretical frameworks. As a result, a nuanced funerary culture with a significant degree of mortuary variability was revealed at each of the sites investigated. Non-elite funerary provision at Memphis was influenced by a complex web of factors such as economic potential, relationships to local elites, communal and personal identities, choice, and practicality. While mortuary differentiation by sex could not be proven statistically, evidence emerged for significant age differentiation in the funerary provision. The four communities investigated are distinct and each represent a different population within the Memphite region ranging from a main necropolis (Helwan) to a cemetery of a secondary or tertiary local centre (Turah). The smallscale regionality observed at Memphis should serve as a springboard for future research on Early Dynastic Egypt. Finally, the study has highlighted the research potential of statistical analyses to extract vital information from old data, alongside the importance of hypothesis testing in the evaluation of such analyses.

Vianna, Diego Fonseca Brasil January 2016 (has links)
A large-scale project on the natural landscape is a subject that concerns modern architecture, setting a challenge that includes both the resolution of the project itself and the capacity of territory production. Horacio Baliero (1927-2004), in his work for the Mar del Plata Park Cemetery, prominently covers these issues, demonstrating the willingness of the modern movement to establish relationships between the building and its insertion site, as well as its concern with the construction of territory. Considered an exponent of modern architecture in Argentina by his peers, Baliero devoted himself both to teaching and practice, developing more than 80 projects of different scales and programs. The present study presents a comprehensive analysis of the Mar del Plata Park Cemetery in order to understand its possible influences, the resulting composition of each proposed element, and how the architectural project establishes relationships with the landscape. To set background for the central case, this analysis also shows an overview of Baliero’s career, highlighting his most influential works and important aspects of his academic path and professional life.

No. of bitstreams: 1 karise_Cristofoli.pdf: 4560052 bytes, checksum: c65ff768f6e8c14bf9d24137880d6001 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2014-06-24 / Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico / The discussion of the problems linked to risk of contamination brought about the cemeteries has been restricted to a relatively small portion of society. It is however, an issue of significant importance in the sphere sanitarian, as in the environmental sphere. This study highlights the main problems that cemeteries can cause when it ignored the set of statutory federal and state levels, among which stands out the CONAMA resolution No. 335/2003, the Code of Health of Paraná Law No. 13331/SEMA 2001 and Resolution No. 002/2009. In this context, the present study had the objective was accomplished: the location and mapping of rural cemeteries Francisco Beltrão - PR; the main types of research conducted in these burial cemeteries; risk assessment of environmental contamination in the areas of direct and indirect influence of these developments; conduct the survey and systematization of corrective and preventive measures for areas where irregularities are diagnosed in cemeteries. Several methodological procedures, among which stand out were used to conduct this work: the identification and mapping of existing cemeteries in the rural area of the city of Francisco Beltrão - PR; the application of questionnaires to representatives of communities that have cemetery and interviews with representatives of government agencies responsible for licensing and environmental sanitation sector in the city. In Fieldwork was possible to collect water from fifteen points and mount a database on aspects of the use and distribution of natural elements within and in the neighborhood of cemeteries. As a result we identified 51 municipal cemeteries located in a rural area, of which 95% are held and managed by the community itself without assistance from the government. All cemeteries higher risk of environmental contamination, however, the degree of environmental impact varies with the concurrence of non-conformities in the practice of burials and maintenance of these cemeteries. Through the study concluded that there is no technical support by the Municipality and the emerging need of conducting clarification and training process in communities, especially those residents who become responsible for the daily practices implemented under the cemeteries. We underline the statement at work inserting environmental education activities in order to prevent and, if possible, to minimize the negative impacts of cemeteries.
