A Study of the Mater Children’s Hospital Tile ProjectSutton, Kathleen Rose Creagh, res.cand@acu.edu.au January 2005 (has links)
This thesis examined the relationship between children’s visual art and hospital contexts. It specifically focused on children’s art in the Tile Project within the Mater Children’s Hospital, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. This ethnographic study consisted of interviews with the creators of the Tile Project as well as interviews and a survey with parents, staff, and children within the Mater Children’s Hospital. The interviews were informed by a review of literature in the areas of art in health settings. The study made observations of the community interacting with the tiles and collected images of the tiles used in the hospital and employed the framework of Bourdieu’s (1993) fields of cultural production and Abbs’s (1987) aesthetic field and dimensions, as well as the aesthetic dimensions of Beardsley (1982), Eisner (1985), and Csikszentmihalyi (1990). The study investigated the aesthetic characteristics of the tiles and their health outcomes in relation to the hospital community. This study is significant because the Mater Children’s Hospital Tile Project was a project that reflected art in healthcare settings involving Community Arts, art in design, and art in public buildings. The research identified the unique nature of the Tile Project which saw the hospital as a children’s space with artworks for children by children. The study reflected on the value of the tiles in having a healing and distracting quality for parents and children alike and that engagement with the tiles through touch, imagination, and playful games improved the atmosphere of the hospital.

Den kvinnliga rollen i nyutgivna bilderböcker : Och hur pedagoger resonerar kring sitt arbete med att motverka stereotypa könsmönster i förskolan med hjälp av bilderböckerSagrelius, Charlotte January 2012 (has links)
Problem statement: Nowadays, women have a greater place in literature, both as a writer but also the role of the book and that is why I have chosen to examine how educators reason about their use of literature in preschool to combat the stereotype of gender roles. Motivation: An earlier survey shows that women now have a greater place in the recently released children's literature and, therefore, it is interesting to see how educators see their work on countering gender patterns using picture books. It is also interesting to examine whether the female roles in the books are consistent with the research I've used. Approach: I chose to use qualitative interviews with teachers in two preschools and also examined the recently released children’s books they worked with. Results: The results of my survey shows that teachers thoughts about their work on combating gender pattern occurs on an individual plan and depend on how the teacher interprets the guidelines. My survey also shows that the gender roles in the newly released picture books are consistent with earlier research I’ve used. Conclusion: It is therefore important that educators are aware of how easily gender patterns are induced, it happens on a daily basis through words and expectations that educators have on children.

Barns inflytande i förskolan : Fyra förskollärares erfarenheter av och syn på barns inflytande i förskolan / Children´s influence in preschool : Four preschool teachers´ experiences and viewpoints on children´s influence in preschoolPerez, Zaida January 2012 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis has been to; based on interviews with four teachers in Stockholm city, get at picture of preschool teacher’s viewpoint on children’s influence in preschool. Research questions: How is the children`s influence looked upon by the teachers in preschool?, In what ways do children’s influence affect their learning, In what ways are the interviewed preschool teachers working with democracy in preschool? To carry out this thesis, I used the qualitative method. In the qualitative method, use is made of the interview method to collect empirical data with interviews. I interviewed four preschool teachers from three different preschools. This thesis is built upon John Dewey’s philosophical thinking as a theoretical base. The result of this thesis shows that all preschool teachers felt that the application of children’s influence in the daily activities, although complicated, is essential in their work. At the same time the opinion of the teachers varied a lot concerning to what extent the children shall take responsibility on deciding upon their activities. One teacher claimed that it is not possible to plan activities based on 19 children’s wishes and the other that she had to limit the influence of the children because it is the teacher’s obligation to lead the children to discover new activities, not just to continue with the old ones. By using children’s influence, considered another preschool teacher, the children expand their frames of reference which allow the kids to discover new areas to work with. All the teacher´s also agreed about the importance of letting the activities being built upon the children`s different interests. Preschool teachers use children’s councils, planning with children or voting on what activities they should have in the pursuit of the children to take part of what democracy means.

History in the Making: The Impact of Ideology in Lynne Cheney's Children's BooksMiller, Samuel 22 August 2010 (has links)
This analysis of children’s literature attempts to understand the relationship between social reproduction and ideology. This thesis argues that children’s literature written by Lynne Cheney is a cultural artifact that constitutes an ideological history. In addition, it argues that her books can be used by ideological institutions to strengthen socially accepted practices through the theory of social reproduction. Since there is a lack of theory regarding cultural artifacts in literary studies, an adoption from the field of pedagogy called the theory of hidden curriculum is used to explain social reproduction. The process of social reproduction reinforces socioeconomic structures put in place in order to reinforce social norms.

"Vi ska inte sitta här och tro att folk ska komma till oss" : En kvalitativ undersökning av några halländska bibliotekariers syn på marknadsföring avbarnavdelningenpå folkbibliotek. / "We Can´t Just Sit Here Waiting For Them to Come" : A Qualitative Survey of Some Swedish Librarians view of Marketing the Children’s Library.Bergström, Sara January 2012 (has links)
This two years master’s thesis takes interest in the concept of marketing related to the Children’s Library. The purposes have been to investigate the perception of marketing among a few librarians working at the Children’s Library in the Swedish region of Halland and further to analyse their perception of marketing in the daily work at the library. Eventually to analyse the consequences of these librarians approach to marketing related to their perception of the library’s mission. The Regional aspect of the survey is due to the 2011 celebrated report about marketing the library. The theoretical framework is twofold, the marketing mix is used to understand what at the library could be used in marketing. The work of the Danish scholars Henrik Jochumsen och Casper Hvenegaard Rasmussen are used to understand the different functions of the library. Their theory present the library’s four different func-tions illustrated as "spaces". The spaces are the inspiration space, the learning space, the meeting space and the performative space. By those means the librarians perception of marketing in their everyday work have been analysed. The method used is qualitative, semi-structured interviews. Results show that the majority of the librarians preferred the vague word "visibility" to marketing. The con-cept of marketing was more seen as something communicated to users by posters and leaflets. When asked about interpersonal relations, accessibility and communication the librarians saw these concepts as important thought not obviously related to marketing. The spaces of inspiration and performance were more strongly connected to marketing than the learning space and meeting space. There is an urgent need to discuss the concept of market-ing in relation to the role of the library. This is a two years master’s thesis in Library and Information Studies.
