Childhood Obesity Prevention: A Parent Administered Behavioural Intervention to Increase Child Physical Activity

Howarth, Joelene Marie January 2006 (has links)
Obesity is a complex and increasingly prevalent health disorder that is associated with a wide range of medical, social, and psychological difficulties. People are more likely to be obese if they consume an energy dense diet but do not engage in physical activity. Research has indicated that interventions, when implemented during childhood, have long-term outcomes that are superior to interventions implemented in adulthood. This research piloted a behaviourally based intervention programme, with parents as the agents of change, to promote a lifestyle change for inactive children. The programme focussed on increasing physical play (lifestyle activity) and on decreasing sedentary behaviour (an obesity promoting behaviour) during children's after school leisure time. The intervention was investigated using three case studies. Although no conclusive evidence was gained regarding the effectiveness of the pilot programme there was some evidence that children participating reduced their amount of sedentary behaviour and increased the amount of time they spent in physical play. There was also evidence that parents were able to administer the programme and that they found it useful. The results from the present study suggest that the development and application of parent administered behavioural programmes, in the form of packaged interventions to prevent child obesity, warrant further investigation both in terms of the benefits and costeffectiveness it could offer parents and practitioners alike.

Prisiminimų vaizdavimas fotografijoje.Fotografijų triptikas "Mano vaikystės tvenkinys" / Memories representation in photography.Series of photographies “My childhood pond”

Juodytė, Jūratė 04 July 2012 (has links)
Darbą sudaro teorinė ir praktinė dalys. Teorinėje dalyje nagrinėjama prisiminimų reikšmė žmogui ir atminties savoka. Analizuojama žmogaus atminties ir prisiminimų reikšmė filosofijoje ir šiuolaikiniuose moksliniuose ir menotyriniuose kontekstuose. Nagrinėjamas prisiminimų vaizdavimas fotografijoje bei dailėje. Analizuojami ir lyginami šiuolaikiniai lietuvių menininkai, kurie savo fotografijuose, remiasi prisiminimų tematika (Aleksandras Ostašenkovas, Alvydas Lukys, Regina Šulskytė, Ugnius Gelguda). Praktinėje darbo dalyje pateikiamas fotografijų triptikas pavadinimu „Mano vaikystės tvenkinys“. Šiuose fotografijose siekiama perteikti asmeninius prisiminimus iš vaikystės. Fotografijų pagalba norima pavaizduoti asmeninį prisiminimą - savitą kelionę į praeitį, atsigręžimą į vaikystėje patirtus asmeninius išgyvenimus ir atsiminimus. Konkreti vieta (šiuo atvėju tvenkinys) - tai prisiminimus kelianti nostalgiška erdvė, kurioje būnant atminties verpiatuose iškyla ir ryškūs ir migloti vaikystės prisiminimai. / The work consist of theory analysis and visual practical parts. Effet d'une phase d'apprentissage sur la passation de la figure complexe de Rey : application d'une évaluation dynamique auprès d'enfants d'âge scolaire en Algérie / Effects of a learning phase on the realization of the Rey complex figure test : application of a dynamic evaluation with school aged children in Algeria / أثر التعلم على تغيير الرسم المعقدة لى ري : التطبيق تقييم ديناميكى مع الأطفال في الجزائر

Ouali, Sonia 17 December 2013 (has links)
This study examines the effect of age, school level, socioeconomic status, handedness and language skills, on children’s performance in the non-verbal test that is rendered dynamic according to the Test – Learning – Retest procedure (TLR). We argue that non-verbal tests are also culturally connoted (Dasen, 1993 ; Lautrey, 2001). Therefore, cultural factors can be considered as biases rendering questionable direct comparisons of performances of subjects from different cultures. Our hypothesis is that a dynamic psychological evaluation is possible in Algeria allowing us to differentiate psychological profiles of elementary school children with normal intelligence from those needing cognitive remediation.93 children aged between 5 and 11 years filled out a sociodemographic questionnaire, were tested for handedness and linguistic competence. They realized the Rey-Osterrieth Complex Figure Test (Rey, 1959) once and then again a second time after a learning phase according to Kirkwood & al. 2001 model. Results indicate that older children perform better at the RCFT both in the test and re-test situations than younger children. Handedness and socioeconomic status do not affect children’s performance. However, children who are speaked more than one language realize more precise drawings than unilingual children. All children profit from the learning phase.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Barbara Delourdes Rosa Rodrigues de Sousa.pdf: 745307 bytes, checksum: 557fb3fc6f5833cc2c34a3dfc2332b34 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2010-03-15 / The practice of separating children and adolescents of the familiar conviviality and put them in an institution is not characteristic only of the current historical moment, but is a present act since Colonial Brazil. Among various topics that explore childhood, a few of them have as object of study the feelings that children who pass for the institucional shelter attribute to this experience. Going through various historical periods to the current modern conception of childhood in Brazil, this study propous to identify and analyze the meanings in the process of residential care of children sheltered in an Anapolis´ institution, Goiás. Assuming that each child uniquely subjective experiences, listening to children not only as subjects of rights, but as subjects of desire was the challenge of this work. The research was conducted using a qualitative approach through interviews wich were analyzed based on the Underlying Discourse Unveiling Method, using as theoretical support in the analysis of the results the psychoanalytic theory. This method was suitable for data collection, when approaching half-directed interviews to the context of daily informal colloquies, facilitating to the interaction between participants and researcher. The participants were ten children, of both sexes, aged between seven and twelve years old, living in a philanthropic institution of shelter, in Anápolis, Goiás. After the application of the interviews, transcription of the depositions and analysis of the results, could be raised the following categories: ambivalent feelings and perpetrating violence. A mixture of love and hatred in the children´s fellings could be perceived, present in processes of formation of new bonds, the experiences of separation or loss of a love object. The violence of rights and of desires, in the life story of these children, repeated in their experiences of institucional shelter. The results suggest the necessity to listen to the children before and after any decision by those involved in the process of child protection, pointing out the practices that enforce rights already legislated in Brazil.

Sostisso, Débora Francez January 2011 (has links)
This dissertation analyses the discursivities present in contemporary educational books that search to treat the education of boys and girls, namely: Raising Girls of the authoress Gisela Preuschoff (2008), Raising Boys of the author Steve Biddulph (2006), How to raise happy and confident girls and How to raise happy and confident boys, both titles of the authoress Elizabeth Hartley-Brewer (2004a, 2004b). Anchored in a post-structuralist perspective and from the theoretical contributions of Gender Studies and Cultural Studies, the research aimed to discuss and to problematize how such cultural artifacts, invested advices, prescriptions, hints, regulations, serve as educational instances, suggesting specific forms of individuals, in this case, mothers, fathers and educators, to lead their lives and other people and to relate to themselves and others from and on behalf of certain truths. Thus, we can say that the books operate as educational manuals. Also, I tried to look at the mechanisms, strategic games and the techniques that make the speeches that are presented work. This study is affiliated to the discussions that search to problematize the relationships between power and childhood, or of how childhood is captured in the knowledge-power relationships, as this infantile gendered subject is produced and how operate the strategies that aim their government. In order to analyze the politics of truth present in the titles in issue, were observed the language used and the different discursive fields that are based on the knowledge and the proposal put there. The analysis allow to say that the ways of "educating" presented in these publications positionates the subjects in different ways and particular, constituting boys, fathers, mothers, educators, by specific human technologies.

We brought intrinsic concepts, from the educational communication and sociology of childhood disciplines in order to identify the formation of communicative ecosystems and how was the child's participation in the production of children's supplements analyzed, since the child it is someone who has rights. As steps to achieving the proposed objectives, we map the current reality of the production of children's supplements in Brazil and contextualize the production of objects supplements in our study, namely, those published in João Pessoa. Our methodology involved a content analysis of three children's supplements published in newspapers in Paraíba: "O Pirralho", "Correinho das Artes" and "Correio Criança", conducted qualitatively, seeking denotative aspects of elements of content that gave us the grant for a thorough and specific analysis. To complement the research, we draw on tools such as documentation research and interviews. In our reflections, we recommend practices that can contribute to the improvement of the work of journalists for this type of production, in the routine inside the newspaper. In this research we found that the supplements analyzed did not count on a communicative ecosystem, as provided for educommunication, forming a team of professionals from various disciplines to objective the participation of the child and/or formulating partnerships with institutions involved in processes with children. But the supplement’s partnerships with teachers in schools, opening child participation spaces in the media. We note that journalism is an effective instrument of resonance of the children’s cultures and we emphasized the importance of making journalism and the media accessible to children’s expression.

The social state in Chile under the prism of childhood policies : continuities and inflections 1973-2013

Cubillos Celis, Paula 26 September 2017 (has links)
The transformations of the Chilean Welfare State, following the political-economic restructuration after the military dictatorship (1973-1990), have been the core of an intense debate. However, the transformations taking place since 1973 in the relationship between the State, the market, and civil society, regarding the access to rights, lie in a structure of unequal distribution of rights forged throughout the 20th century. This philosophy of the Welfare State and its relation to individuals is characterized by the classification of beneficiaries: the bearers of rights and the recipients of assistance. This system is organized based on the configuration of two mechanisms of access to social protection, with the direct participation of the market, and which is characterized by the privatized dimension of the solidarity conception, either through the family or through the philanthropy. The neo-liberalization process introduces three changes to this model: the liberalization of the social sectors, which improves the public-private collaboration system; the technocratic development of the decision-making process and the intervention process; and the change of targeting as a mechanism of social justice. Thus, the model of unequal distribution of rights, enhanced by the establishment of a residual state during the dictatorship and then by the sophistication of targeting policies during the democratic period, takes shape, particularly, in terms of the social management of childhood. The policies of health, education, and specialized protection, crystallize a model of continuity and neoliberal inflections. This is the reconfiguration of the Welfare State as a tension: the strong regulatory role that accompanies the liberalization of the social sectors is gradually anchored on a discourse of social rights that reflects the processes of democratization experienced by the country since 1990. The objective of this research is to reflect on the forms that the Welfare State adopts from the political-economic restructuration of the country and to trace these transformations in a socio-political and historical framework. In this way, this study seeks to analyze the reconfigurations of social and political process, from an empirical regard, discussing the studies of social policies towards the childhood.
