The "Tribune" of Saint-Michel-de-Cuxa (Eastern Pyrenees, mid. 12th century) : proposition for a digital reconstruction serving a new historical, iconographical and liturgical approach.

Thirion, Anna 11 December 2015 (has links)
In the middle of the twelfth century, the abbatial church of Saint-Michel-de-Cuxa was endowed with a ''tribune'', a deep choir screen built on two bays. Dismantled in the sixteenth century this ''tribune'' is only known today by its 180 pink marble sculptures scattered throughout France and abroad. Since its discovery in the 1950’s, several attempts have been made to reconstruct this liturgical nonpareil of architecture. Their results differ on several points : the inventory, the location of the construction in the nave of the abbey church, the shapes of the structure and the positioning of the sculptures themselves. The stones preserved, numerous and varied in nature, are sufficient to allow a 3D reconstruction in the form of a digital anastylosis. From the Greek word, anastellein, “to rebuild,” this study appoints an attempt to digitally reconstruct the disappeared monument from its remaining elements. With no contemporaneous descriptions or representations that of the tribune and lacking precise textual and iconographic evidence, it is the careful analysis of the stones themselves that allow the formulation of a new hypotheses. Through this research, a new methodology for the study of the scattered fragments issued from the dismantled structure has been developed and tested for the purpose of their anastylosis. Every stone attributed to the ancient ''tribune'' has been digitized and integrated in the proposition of a 3D reconstruction. The latter has brought a better understanding of the sculpted set and its architecture, renewing discussions on the structure's artistic, liturgical and historical aspects. Thus bringing clarity to its iconography, functions, dating and context of commissioning.

Choir participation as tool for transformation and teambuilding in a corporate environment : a case study within Absa Bank

Van As, Aletta Johanna 11 November 2009 (has links)
Fourteen years into democracy, South Africans yet need to transform into a truly united society. Transformation entails meaningful change and requires new mindsets, behaviours and worldviews. In this country, such change hinges on interaction and communication between all South Africans to facilitate insight into the unfamiliar lifeworlds and beliefs of others. In 2005 Dr. Steve Booysen, Group Chief Executive of the Absa Group, initiated an internal choir festival as a platform for social interaction and team building of staff across all cultures, age groups and post levels in the bank. This happened in the process of the Barclays Bank investment of billions of rands that would translate to its controlling share in Absa. Recognising the merge as a potential threat to the morale of the Absa work force, Booysen envisaged the choir project as a means to support staff during this phase of transformation in the bank. This study links theories relating to organisational development and the inherent power in music and musicking for positive change. The questionnaire (administered in three interventions between 2006 and 2008) was the primary instrument for obtaining data for this study. Absa’s choir project (the first of its kind in South Africa and possibly elsewhere in the world) offers unique possibilities for investigating the positive effects of musicking, and in particular choral singing, within a corporate environment. For optimal functioning, societies rely on their citizens to trust each other and share a civic culture. With the exception of the Indian community, choral singing is a practised tradition across all cultures in South Africa and thus presents a possible vehicle to promote healing and nation building in post-Apartheid South Africa. Genuine communication between citizens from all cultural backgrounds could help liberate South Africans of superficial prejudgments of each other. Where the inability to speak the others’ language(s) inhibits authentic communication, choral singing proffers unique opportunities for shared communicative experiences. Should choral singing prove to be an appropriate key to unlock such experiences for South Africa of differing cultural and language backgrounds, then choral singing is of great value to this society. / Thesis (DMus)--University of Pretoria, 2010. / Music / unrestricted

Körsång som hälsofrämjande aktivitet : En studie om flowskapande och hälsofrämjande upplevelser av att sjunga i grupp / Choir singing as a health promotion activity : A study of flow-creating and health-promoting experiences of singing in groups

Johansson, Hannah January 2017 (has links)
The study investigates how choir singing affects the perceived health of choir singers in the Swedish Church. To deepen the study further, the respondents' experiences of choir singing were also studied and how these experiences can be linked to The Flow Theory. Qualitative research interviews have been used with a handpicked selection of interviewees with the only requirement that they have been involved in choir singing for at least three years. This method was used to get as much information as possible and gain a deeper understanding of the subject. Choir singing seems to affect respondents positive in general in this study. In the choir they got new friends and social contact. They experienced positive feelings after the sessions, among other things, they became happy and gained more energy. Performances were also perceived as positive, several thought it was fun and atmospheric. There were a few negative feelings that could occur for some of the respondents. Some was concerned that they would be alone in their section during exercises and performances. A nervousness could also occur when they were not completely sure of the lyrics. It was found that the choir leader can be an important part of how good a choir is. According to the study, the choir singing can be a flow-creating activity because respondents felt many of the emotions flow can create, such as intense focus on the present, time is perceived to pass faster than normal and a feeling that the activity is the goal itself. Considering what choir singing can do for the perceived health, it can also be good in a health promotion perspective. The predominant positive experiences and feelings associated with the choir show that the perceived health can be influenced in several ways, primarily through more social contact and that it creates joy.

Choral competitions : a critical appraisal of their relevance to music education in KwaZulu

Nzimande, Sipho Justice January 1993 (has links)
Submitted in fulfilment or partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Education in Music in the Faculty of Education at the University of Zululand, 1993. / A big question for the researcher is whether the current school choir competitions have positive or negative effects on the choristers and the rest of the community. Therefore the aim of this study is to look for the possibilities of enriching this choral practice or drawing everyone's realisation to the effects that exist in choral competitions. The procedure of interviews and questionnaires has been employed because not much information about this study has been investigated and preserved. The habit of competitions is retraced back from the Zulu culture, where there exists a non-musical competition. Speech and melody, harmony and rhythm is cited with the nature and African tendencies in mind. The NATAL AFRICAN TEACHERS' UNION is an organisation that has made and kept school competitions going. Four regions of NATAL have been used as a field of study. This is because each of these regions has a college, and colleges also serve as a source of information. Questions used during research have been justified with an intention of making it possible for the researcher to get information related to attitude, experience, amount of participation and the level of literacy.

Willén, Malin January 2021 (has links)
The aim of this study was to examine female singers’ experiences of singing in the genres of CCM in upper secondary school after they had previously experienced singing in a choir program in the elementary school with a focus on the specific sound of Swedish choirs and to examine how their musical and vocal identity have been influenced by this. This was investigated through qualitative interviews with four female singers whose educations suited the purpose of the study and who also have attended a post-secondary education in singing. The result showed that the female singers used music and their singing to explore and create their own musical and vocal identity. It also showed that the teachers had a big influence on the power structures that were created in the discourses and also on the students’ room of manoeuvre. The singers’ perceived room to manoeuvre and musical agency proved to have a great influence on their musical and vocal identity development.

Le mélos dans la musique grecque antique : une approche expérimentale par la restitution de strophes tragiques / Melos in ancient Greek music : an experimental approach by restitution of tragic strophes

Cam, François 21 December 2017 (has links)
One always speaks about melody when analyzing ancient Greek music without having enough questioned the genesis of musical performances which contributed to the decisive development of musical theory as of the 5th c. It is high time to reassess this decisive rise in the scope of the Mediterranean music as well of the Western theory of music on the basis of this essential concept, melos, which is to modify our perception of this period’s musical shapes, while inducing a type of performance and a spectator’s relationship to the scene. This quest is based on the ancient musical theory facing once again the relic of the ancient Greek music and in a new way a work of vocally rendering lyrical verses in the framework of performances by the theatre company Demodocos. Hence it is part of this contemporary movement of revival in the scenic genres of ancient Greece and Rome joining basic research and experimentation.

Exploring choristers' perceptions of a university choir as potential for social capital and personal value

Barrett, Michael Joseph January 2017 (has links)
Numerous studies emphasise the importance of music-making as an integral human experience, but only a handful focus on the perceived benefits of participating in a university choir as experienced by the singers themselves. An extensive literature search revealed that no research has been conducted that specifically focuses on this topic within a multicultural South African university choir. There is an increasing interest in the attributed values associated with membership in a collective music activity, especially with regard to choirs. The aim of this ethnographic case study was to explore the perceived benefits of choir participation for choristers who are members of a multicultural university choir in South Africa and to examine to what extent if at all social capital is generated as a by-product of their choir participation. A qualitative research approach was most suitable in order to gain an in-depth perspective of choristers' personal perceptions. Data collection included interviews, focus groups and observations of rehearsals and performances, involving 76 members of the University of Pretoria Camerata. The findings of this research highlight the personal, social and musical values attributed to membership within the choir as perceived by its members. The main findings revealed that the experience of singing in a choir is polygonal, and that such experiences are rewarding, plentiful, and even challenging at times. Choristers perceive their participation to be beneficial to their health and see the choir environment as safe and conducive to forming important relationships. Cultural integration takes place as an extension of being associated within a diverse group of people and a wealth of trust is generated amongst the singers, regardless of their cultural, religious or language differences. Findings indicated some negative perceptions as experienced by the singers, as cultural barriers still exist between members which were exacerbated by political tensions on campus at the time of data collection. Another stressful element of choir participation is the extensive time and commitment required due to the demanding and eventful choir calendar, as well as full academic programmes for which they are registered. The study provides empirical evidence of how two types of social capital, namely bridging- and bonding social capital, are generated within the choir. Bridging social capital exists amongst students from different ethnic backgrounds; while bonding social capital is evident between specific language-, racial- and cultural groups within the choir. As a result of choir participation, social norms and values are shared amongst the singers and networks and connections are established across all types of boundaries, creating an environment of reciprocity between singers. Results from this study highlight that the Camerata establishes a wealth of trust between its members, on a personal, professional and musical level. / Thesis (DMus)--University of Pretoria, 2017. / Music / DMus / Unrestricted
