Silva, Rafael Alexandre da 10 November 2014 (has links)
The music by Gilberto Mendes have influenced composer in and out of university because of the importance such works acquired through second half of XXth century. As a versatile composer that Gilberto Mendes is, he wrote many musical genres for many musical formations, new sonorities and forms inspired by the Second School of Wien and the School of Damstadt. By looking after the volume of his choir works it\'s possible to see an expressive amount of music written by him for this formation. By looking at this form of choir music where the integration of two forms of Art - Poetry and Music - which highlights all its musical and linguistic innovative capabilities, we so had to look after analytic tools that could approach deeply the works so that the many component aspects of these works won\'t be left aside. Obviously the context in which the work was made, the remarkable and evident influences, and the composer\'s own account about his creations are also basic on constructing, remaining and perpetration of the very works. The book \"Analyzing Musical Multimedia\" by Nicholas Cook offers analytic tools which allows us to look after the singularities of these works which is essentially multimedia, because it combines different forms of artwork in one (in this case, two - music and poetry) generating many linguistic possibilities. The methodology adopted consists on reviewing Mendes\' basic biographic writings, interviewing him and the conduct Roberto Martins which performed practically all of Gilberto\'s work for choir, retrieving and analyzing the works, and writing the thesis, which are the results of all this research. The work inclusion criteria was choosing those whose were a capella works and whose texts were written by the poets who were members of the group Noigandres - Augusto e Haroldo de Campos, e Décio Pignatari, which are the Brazilian exponents of Concrete Poetry. By this we hope to outline a rich choir work which influences the artistical sphere until nowadays, and to explore many aspects of the language of this composer that is relevant in both Brazilian and world scenario.

Esse processo permitiu enquadrar o objeto de estudo nessa categoria, e assim apresentar algumas considerações sobre possíveis mecanismos de apoio e incentivo a seu desenvolvimento / Abstract: This work covers the context of government policies for Culture in Brazil under the views of "Cultural Circuits", privileged locations for these events, covering the interactions with Chorale practices in São Paulo. Its main objective is to characterize the different Chorale practices as a hybrid circuit resulting from socio-cultural construction and deconstruction processes along the 20th Century. From the presented historical retrospect and based on concepts from Brunner (1987), Canclini (1997), Teixeira Coelho (2004), Hall (2004), Vargas (2009), and Furtado (2012), the work examines scenarios for the hybrid cultural realization and its characteristics in post modernity. This process allowed the object under analysis to be clarified and led to conclusions on mechanisms for support and incentives aiming its development / Mestre

Matter, Suelen Scholl January 2014 (has links)
This paper deals with the formation and updating of identities "descendants of Germans" Catholics (ethnic dimension and religious dimension) through / from the practice of choral singing in Encosta da Serra Gaúcha region in Rio Grande do Sul, more specifically about people making music and creating meanings for their musical practice in cities known for their history of German immigration – Dois Irmãos and Morro Reuter. The objective of this research is to study the construction of these musical practices from understanding their social actors and the experience of ethnographic encounter, having as research problem to understand how they construct and manage their musical practice in different areas of circulation. Through ethnography of music, this research deconstructs the common sense idea that only Lutherans would be authentic Teutons, and evidences that other configurations and combinations are possible. "Catholic Choristers" also trigger German-Brazilian ethnic identity in relation to "the other" and highlight traces of ethnicity through their musical practice and their repertoires and discourses. However, in such universe where these "descendants of Germans" groups interact with institutions in which are driven "strategies" and "tactics" they are not always considered partners or contributors within the policies aimed to the "Charming German Tradition" tourism project.

“Shake your tuchas” : Jewish parody rappers and the performance of Jewish masculinity / Jewish parody rappers and the performance of Jewish masculinity

Tyson, Lana Kimura 23 April 2013 (has links)
American Jewish rappers have become an increasingly prevalent topic in Jewish popular and scholarly media, where critics and scholars seek to understand how hip-hop performance and consumption serves as a platform for exploring and articulating Jewish identity. This thesis explores the work of what I term “Jewish parody rappers”—rappers who foreground Jewishness while destabilizing normative American Jewish identity using humor or parody—in order to demonstrate how nuanced gender and ethnoracial identity performances can be found in an often overlooked segment of Jewish rap. Using Jamie Moshin’s concept of “New Jewishness,” I argue that Jewish parody rappers recontextualize tropes of Jewish masculinity through black hip-hop codes, evoking a long history of Jewish engagement with African-American performance. Through an examination of Jewish parody rappers and their performances—including the Beastie Boys, 2 Live Jews, Chutzpah, and Athens Boys Choir—I demonstrate how these New Jews destabilize, or queer, Jewish identity through hip-hop performance. The Beastie Boys’ parodic performances highlight Jewishness as a liminal identity as they use the malleable and performative markers of Jewish masculinity to foreground their whiteness in the black-dominated arena of hip-hop. 2 Live Jews and Chutzpah recuperate tropes of effeminate and impotent Jewish masculinity through their extended parodies. Harvey Katz of Athens Boys Choir plays with tropes of Jewish masculinity not only to queer Jewishness, like other Jewish parody rappers, but also to articulate an explicitly queer Jewish identity. Each of these core samples illuminates various ways in which Jewish parody rappers perform New Jewish identity; however, these rappers do not evade the specter of problematic racial appropriation as they articulate Jewishness through and against tropes of black hip-hop hypermasculinity. / text

Forslund, Emanuel January 2013 (has links)
Scientific studies show that good leadership is a key factor for group- and individual development. Studies have also shown that the contrary can curb talented individuals and/or cause stagnation, or even cause groups to halt their progression. This essay studies how leaders in musical and athletic environments look on their own leadership. In interviews, the leaders reflect upon experienced issues related to their profession, their views on difficulties in their leading role, as well as individual, and group development. This study also includes two observations, one in each field of profession. The answers in the interviews have been compared in order to identify possible differences and/or similarities between the two different career fields . The comparison also serve as a background for a discussion on wether the two different leader professions can learn from each other. The study shows that the stereotype portrait of the screaming hockey coach isn’t entirely accurate when to describe the leaders who coach young hockey players in Sweden. The study also shows that the leaders in choral singing has a very strong position and often single-handedly pilots their groups against put up targets.

Toward musical independence: metacognitive strategies employed by young choristers engaged in notational reading tasks

Nolet, Marlene Jennifer 17 December 2007 (has links)
The purpose of the study was to explore metacognitive strategy usage in young choristers engaged in notational literacy tasks. Constructivist approaches encouraging metacognition are used in many subject areas, but have not been studied within a music context. Music-specific strategies (Killian & Henry, 2005) and metacognitive self-regulatory strategies (Zimmerman & Pons, 1986) were sought to learn how students become musically independent. Ten extra-curricular honour choir participants were studied using a collective case design. Participants completed a background questionnaire, a notational reading session, a performance of the piece studied in the reading session, and an interview describing their learning, which was recorded, analysed and transcribed. Processes of analysis included case aggregation, direct interpretation, and triangulation. Results indicate 1) learning is an individual process, 2) all students used strategies deliberately, though none evaluated the effectiveness of their choices, 3) students using the most strategies achieved the highest accuracy, and 4) students seemed to enjoy and benefit from discussing metacognitive processes.
