The culture of music printing in sixteenth-century Augsburg

Roper, Amelie January 2017 (has links)
In the early sixteenth century, the free imperial city of Augsburg in southern Germany played a vital role in the development of music printing with movable type north of the Alps. These technical advances impacted on the distribution of musical repertoire and placed the city's printers on a more equal footing with their Italian competitors. Taking these innovations as its starting point, this thesis examines the development of music printing in Augsburg during the sixteenth century. In addition to considering the specialist formats of choir books and partbooks, it extends the boundaries traditionally applied to music print culture to include books about music and pamphlets and broadsheets. These complementary strands of the printing industry contributed to a diverse geography of performance, with Augsburg's musical activity taking place not only in churches, schools and the home, but also in inns and on the street. The market for music publications was similarly multifaceted, encompassing professional musicians, wealthy collectors, students, keen amateurs and humble street performers. Levels of production varied. Pamphlets and broadsheets enjoyed a diverse market profile and were produced in large numbers. Theoretical texts and partbooks were issued in small quantities. In addition to reflecting their more restricted audience, this meagre output was a consequence of the city's thriving book trade, which reduced the demand for local production. In the case of partbooks, it was also a result of deliberate product placing. Augsburg's astute printers carved out a niche in a crowded market by issuing small numbers of partbooks at the highest end of the quality spectrum. The inclusive approach to music printing adopted in this study ensures that the significance of its findings extends beyond a localised investigation of print culture. By tracking the ebb and flow of production across formats and over the sixteenth century as a whole, a complex relationship between music printing and the socio-economic, cultural, political and religious upheavals of the period becomes apparent. Music printing, often the preserve of musicologists and specialist bibliographers, emerges as a powerful tool with which to refine our understanding of the early modern book world.

Fenomén lotyšských Svátků písní / The Phenomenon of Latvian Song Festivals

Skoupá, Kateřina January 2012 (has links)
This work deals with Latvian Song Festivals as an important phenomenon in Latvian history which started in Latvia in 1873. Their basis lays in choir singing developed in Latvia on a massive scale in 2nd half of 19th century. The festivals probably continued old tradition of singing - so-called teicamās dziesmas which had a similar structure as modern choirs. The development of choir singing is connected with Herrnhuterian schools and pedagogical colleges. The personality playing an important role in this process was a chief pedagogue in Valmiera Jānis Cimze whose collection Dziesmu rota launched a discussion about the future of Latvian culture from the point of view of national identity. Although the structure of Latvian Song Festivals was taken over from the Baltic Germans the idea of national identity has been involved since the beginning. Forming of Latvian national identity was in its beginnings influenced by J. G. Herder's philosophy and his idea of Volkslied and Volksgeist and it is closely connected with Latvian folk songs. It corresponds with Latvian self-determination as the nation of singers. In four historic periods defined by socio-political changes on Latvian territory these ideas together with a strong national element is found exactly in Latvian Song Festivals. The festivals become a...

O regente-arranjador e a circulação do repertório de arranjos nos coros brasileiros / The conductor-arranger and arrangement repertoire circulation in Brazilian choirs

Carolina Andrade Oliveira 20 October 2017 (has links)
This research is intended to investigate, identify and analyze the various practices of conductor-arranger - from the arrangement\'s conception up to its performance, throughout repertoire\'s choice, writing procedures and techniques, and rehearsals. It also aims to verify how much the conductor-arranger participates or even influences Brazilian choral repertoire\'s circulation. For that, we have adopted a mixed methodology and empirical research. The research is divided into two chapters. The first looks at repertoire circulation, where we have traced an overview of the 20th and 21st centuries: there is a literature review of ten works that approach arrangement\'s production, among them Fernandes (2003), Souza (2003), Pereira (2006) and Moura (2012). The term \'popular\' and the concept of \'choral arrangement\' are discussed and the concert programs of Choral encounters are analyzed (1984-1994). In the second chapter, the purpose was to define the conductor-arranger\'s profile, by using the prosopographical method (STONE, 2011; and PAZ, 2014). Three conductor-arrangers contributed in semi-structured and open interviews, among them are Eduardo Fernandes, Marcelo Recski and Roberto Rodrigues, in order to obtain more detailed and complete information. Such interviews were the only way of coming to understand practical issues on composition and interpretation of arrangements, besides specific issues of some of the arrangements, that other methodologies were not able to approach. Regarding the practices of the conductor-arranger, the following subjects were analyzed: the repertoire as a group identity factor, the hybridization processes in arrangements (CANCLINI, 2003; e BURKE, 2003); arrangement\'s adaptations, writing rules and strategies, reading and interpretation of choral arrangements based on the concept of interpretative community (OLIVEIRA, 2002). As a result, it was verified that the number of arrangements prevail compositions in the analyzed programs, and that the conductor-arranger is the main producer of those arrangements. Based on the concept of interpretative community, we can conclude that choral arrangement scores are generally open scores, prone to additions, cuts and other changes. The interviews made possible to identify reading practices and shared use by Brazilian choral conductors who are responsible for the arrangements circulation, referring to dynamics, tempo, breathings, chord symbols, rhythms, among others.

The Heart's Portrait: An Emily Dickinson Fascicle for SATB Choir and String Quartet

Bottoni, Jennifer C. 01 January 2009 (has links)
The Heart's Portrait is a twelve movement composition for SATB choir and string quartet. The eight poems selected as the text for this work were penned by the eminent American poet Emily Dickinson. The text for the first movement, Dickinson's poem "If I can stop one Heart from breaking," succinctly describes the themes she commonly expounded upon in her writings: life, love, aching, pain, and purpose through faith. The remaining seven poems were chosen because they also explore these elemental themes. The main poem returns in variation throughout the piece, resulting in a modified rondo. To complement the four-part consort of voices, I selected a consort of strings in the form of a string quartet. The role of the quartet varies throughout the work from subservient to the vocal part, to dominant of the entire texture, to an equal partnership with the voices; these relationships are dictated by the text. Throughout the movements, I was able to explore a range of compositional techniques, both traditional and contemporary, while maintaining the primary purpose of unifying the text and music. This paper illustrates the initial compositional decisions made to begin the piece, the texts chosen and their placement within the work, the poet's history as it relates to the composition, a brief discussion on composers who have set Dickinson's words, and a thorough analysis of the work itself.

Risberg, Ingrid January 2012 (has links)
Students, who attend a special musical training which focus on choral singing and is offered in the Swedish compulsory school (i.e. musikklass in Swedish), are included in a locally situated music culture, which is shaped by traditions from the early twentieth century. In this tradition, conventions relating to singing with children have developed. Teaching choral singing in large groups is common in these music classes. However, students internalize knowledge about singing individually. Therefore, each student contributes his or her expertise about singing in music making together with other singers. Consequently, the purpose of this study was to highlight individual student learning about singing in a large choir group. The participants in this study were two music teachers and 8 students aged 10 an 11 years old who attended music classes with a focus on choral singing. Data were collected by observations and video documentations of one choir lesson in each grade and by interviews with the students. Data were analysed from a culture psychology perspective with a focus on cultural tools. The results showed the importance of the individual music cultural framing as well as the students’ pursuit of quality. Furthermore, the results showed consistency between the students descriptions of prerequisites for learning. The most important prerequisite, according to the students, was the opportunity for them to sing in a comfortable singing mode. Finally, an overall pattern in the results was the variation in how students pay attention to cultural tools distributed to them in choral teaching.

Žmogaus santykis su sakraline muzika ir raiškos savastis: pagal Vilniaus katalikiškų parapijų vargonininkų bei IX–XII klasių mokinių patirtį / Man‘s relationship with sacral music ant the identity of its expression according to the experience of Vilnius parishes and senior schoolchildren (forms 9 – 12)

Zašauskaitė, Rita 27 June 2011 (has links)
[toliau žr. visą tekstą] / Church music, its character and its performers have to conform to the norms provided by the documents of the Church. The laws and recommendations found in these documents are obligatory for every parish. This master paper has been inspired by the regret of the Church documents about some deviations from the aim and the true role of sacral music, such as concert–like style, the shade of pop music, prolonged composition, lack of taste, etc. This can lead people to absent-mindedness and superficiality in prayer. Nothing in the church should decrease people’s concentration or the holiness of the liturgy. Music must be second to liturgy, it must lift people’s souls to pious communication with God. Therefore, man’s relationship with sacral music and its expression influence one another. The quality of this relationship and of the music in church is the responsibility of the parish, of composers, organists, choir directors, singers, instrument players and of the community as a whole. Thus, this paper deals with all of these ministries and their role in helping church music to increase people’s piety. The paper aims at showing people’s relationship with sacral music according to the documents of the Catholic Church, as well as the role of the singers in the liturgy and the most frequent mistakes they make. The paper also tries to formulate the requirements for musical service and the use of instruments in the liturgy. We have investigated into the opinions of church organists in... [to full text]

Mitt i prick : Tonbildningsmetodik i barnkör

Bråsjö, Staffan January 2018 (has links)
The aim of this study is to gain insight into how experienced children’s choir conductors work with the development of voices in the elementary school age. The work primarily focuses on aspects of vocal production such as finding and matching pitch, intonation, tone quality, resonance and falsetto singing. Because of the inherent complex nature of singing, the work also to some extent covers other aspects of choir singing such as breath, posture and organisation. Three experienced Swedish choir directors were interviewed with a qualitative method. The results show that the directors’ methods were similar, emphasizing good voice quality of the director, high registry singing, and enhancing listening skills over detailed work with resonance and tone quality. The results also show that the choir directors were coherent with and to some extent relied on the same method literature that forms the backbone of this work. This study brings to light what methods are used by todays children’s choir directors and further underscores the relevance of existing literature.

Festivais de coros do Rio Grande do Sul (1963-1978) : práticas músico-educativas de coros, regentes e plateia

Teixeira, Lúcia Helena Pereira January 2015 (has links)
This research, of qualitative frame (PIRES, 2010; GONZÁLEZ REY, 2005; MELUCCI, 2005), had as objective to understand the music-educational practices taken place in the Rio Grande do Sul Choir Festivals, held during the period 1963-1978 in the city of Porto Alegre, capital of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Specific objectives of this research were: 1) To analyze the constitution of the Choir Festivals; 2) To exam how social actors were mobilized for the/from the Choir Festivals, as well as the engagement strategies used in it, the cooperation networks and interdependence which allowed the events to take place and the wefts which involved social actors in that specific context; 3) To interpret the participation of choirs, conductors and public, as well as the demands requested to the participants of the Festivals; 4) To analyze which were the conceptions about choral singing, which apprenticeships and musical formations occurred in the/from the participation in the events, and which were the contributions left by the Choir Festivals. As a research procedure I worked with oral history, with which I could combine written resources (newspaper articles of that period, musical programs and letters) with oral resources (pre-interviews and interviews). To understand the networks established by the participants of the Choir Festivals I used the concept of configuration or figuration by Norbert Elias (1997; 2008). Through the content of the analyzed Festivals, it were useful the theoretical visions that focus choral singing as a sociopolitical or nationalistic movement (CHINALI, 2009; GILIOLI, 2008; SILVA, 2001, 2012; SANTOS, 2012; SOUZA 1991, 1999, 2007). Studies about art festivals also helped to throw light over the empirical field (FLÉCHET, 2011, 2013; GOETSCHEL; HIDIROGLOU, 2013). Musiceducational practices were constituted and propelled from the action of the participants agents of the Festivals. An organized committee was the start to institutionalize the Rio Grande do Sul Choir Association, which began to mobilize internal actors (choirs, conductor, press and public), and external actors (authorities, governments, sponsors and supporters). To examine what was requested and what dynamics moved conductors, choirs and public to participate in the Choir Festivals, helped to understand the apprenticeships generated and driven by the context. The results of the research show the music formation of singers, conductors and public generated from conceptions of choral singing and the habitus (ELIAS, 1997) generated in the/by the participation in the Festivals, as well as other contributions driven by those events.

The inicial focus of the work is the Opera Project introduced at the Federal University of Ceará (UFC); a focus that is extended and opened to the educational and musical action carried out collectively through the choir of this institution – Coral da UFC – during the historical period on which this research centers: 1985–2005. The discussion undertaken here seeks to understand the reasons that led to the introduction of an educational project through setting up an opera that would tell the history of Ceará. At the same time we seek to reflect on the relation that musical knowledge establishes with the elites who take possession of it in order to get social status, as well as the strategies and possibilities of human and musical education for persons originating from economically less favored strata. The research work points out the possibilities of a musical education that is carried out through the pleasure and rigor coming from setting up spectacles of choir singing which are collectively conceived and realized from the body of popular Brazilian songs. Thus, we seek to understand the implications of the Opera Project, its first rehearsals and stagings, as well as the implications of setting up the spectacles of the Coral da UFC, in front of the processes of human-musical education experienced by the spectacle participants, choosing as basis for these reflections the life story narrated here.

O cantor emancipado : coro cênico como transformador do movimento coral no sul do Brasil / The emancipated singer: Scenic Choir as a choral movement in southern Brazil transformer

Müller, Cristiane 02 December 2013 (has links)

No. of bitstreams: 1 114569.pdf: 4861591 bytes, checksum: 9fe65a6b26c2e97fe649436d94ac949d (MD5) Previous issue date: 2013-12-02 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / This dissertation is addressing the study of Scenic Choir (Coro Cênico) as a modality which transforms the choir movement in Brazilian Music and aims to research the history of the innovation of the Scenic Choir in Brazilian Music. The research question was formed from transformations occurring in vocal groups and choirs throughout the twentieth century in Brazil: what were the consequences of the process of creation and systematization of the scenic choir in music production in Rio/São Paulo and later in the southern region of the country. From a historical perspective, the elements which contributed for the arising of this choral singing modality were addressed: Canto Orfeônico and vocal groups between the thirties and the sixties that developed a new edification in the arrangements of Brazilian Popular Music; the cultural landscape in the second half of the twentieth century with the movements of the Counterculture, Festivais da Canção (song festivals), Tropicalism, Experimentalism and the Vanguarda Paulista (São Paulo vanguard), which were, among others, responsible for the introduction of the experimental music in choral singing. The conceptions of Scenic Choir and integrated arts, which aggregated theater and dance within choral singing, are exposed through the testimony of its principal agents. In this process, the need for readjustment of group singing assumes a central function. This new function of the singer is discussed from the perspective of the "emancipated singer", which must incorporate knowledge in the areas of physiology and vocal technique, music in general scope, theater and movement, thereby supplying the needs this art requires. As an object of study, three vocal groups from the southern Brazil were chosen Vocal Brasileirão , from Curitiba/PR, Expresso 25 , from Porto Alegre/RS and the group Aretê , from Itajaí/SC - with analytical emphasis in the latter, of which the creative process of the show Aretê, o boi , was studied in detail.
