Simplifying and Complicating Early Social Complexity: An Introduction / Simplificación y complejización de la complejidad social temprana: una introducción

Kaulicke, Peter 10 April 2018 (has links)
This contribution treats some of the basic problems related to the origins of social complexity in ancient Perú and to such crucial definitions as domestication and sedentism. The necessity of including the concept of simplicity in discussions of complexity is stressed, as well as that of discerning the relevance and interrelation between simple and complex institutions. Further, the corresponding chronology of Perú also is in need of standardization and more precise definitions. Lastly, the papers included in this volume are discussed briefly.

Levantamento arqueológico na reserva de desenvolvimento sustentável (RDS) Amanã: Estado do Amazonas / Archaeological Survey at SDR-Amanã Amazonas State

Bernardo Lacale Silva da Costa 05 December 2012 (has links)
The main goal of this dissertation is to introduce the archaeological context of the Amanã Sustainable Development Reserve, situated near the middle course of the Amazon and the lower course of the Japurá Rivers, in the state of Amazonas; its management plan is currently under preparation. This context is then compared to the archaeology of other areas of Amazonia. Preliminary results of the archaeological survey carried out between 2006 and 2008 will be presented, during which time 32 archaeological sites were identified. These are composed of anthropogenic dark earth, pottery and ground lithics. The Boa Esperança and Bom Jesus do Baré archaeological sites were selected for mapping and excavation due to their size, density and the variability of archaeological material they contain. An initial chronology for the Amanã Lake is put forward, based on data related to site size, composition, form and stratigraphy. This is then contrasted to ceramicist occupations identified in the Central Amazon and adjacent areas (the Lower Amazon and middle Caquetá/Japurá). Such a comparative approach is employed as a tool to allow the insertion of the Amanã Lake in the wider scenario, in this way allowing for a contribution to debates and discussions that are important to Amazonian Archaeology, such as the origin and dispersal of ceramic traditions. The data will further provide information to be utilized with local inhabitants for the future development of research, public archaeology and the reserve\'s management activities.

Le premier âge du Fer en vallée de Garonne et sur ses marges : dynamiques chrono-culturelles et territoriales / Early Iron Age in the Garonne valley and on its fringes : Chronocultural and territorial dynamics

Dumas, Antoine 04 November 2016 (has links)
The objective of this PhD research is twofold. First, it aims to synthesize the available knowledge on the Early Iron Age period on the studied area. Secondly, it deals with the analysis of modes and dynamics of settlement during this period and in this geographical area. The research process is made of several steps. The first one consists in the development of relational database made from the inventory of available data. Then, a chronological framework is established form a precise typological analysis of the pottery and some others categories of artefacts (weapons, jewelry, tools…). The typo-chronological study of the material found on burial sites and settlements allows to define a specific regional chronological framework which is independent from the main continental chronological systems. Lastly, the spatial analysis based on this chronological framework aims the identification and study of the sub-regional facies and their evolution throughout time and secondly, the search for reccurent spatial organization patterns. The archaeological facies are studied with multivariate data analysis and, as starting dataset, the typology of the artefacts and their localization in space. The spatial organization is studied with diverse analysis methods within a GIS (Geographic Information System), using complementary approaches (settlement hierarchy, viewshed of the hillforts, relations between burial and domestic sites…).

Étapes de l’urbanisation au coeur de l’oppidum de Bibracte : étude du mobilier céramique des fouilles hongroises de l’Îlot des Grandes Forges / Stages in the process of urbanization in the heart of the oppidum of bibracte : study of the pottery finds of the hungarian excavations of the « grandes forges » insula

Szabó, Dániel 15 January 2011 (has links)
My PhD dissertation contains the detailed study of the pottery finds from the Hungarian excavations of the « Grandes Forges » insula. The insula is located in the oppidum of Bibracte (Le Mont Beuvray, Burgundy). The primary aim of this work is not only to study and to publish the pottery finds of the different occupation layers but also to contribute to the results of the already existing ceramic studies of the oppidum of Bibracte. My work offers a chronology to the « Grandes Forges » insula, an archeological site of great importance where the remains of the roman basilica of Bibracte have been found. Finally my work tries to give a better understanding of the chronology and provides a survey of the pottery finds of the oppidum of Bibracte.

Variations climatiques et variations du cycle hydrologique aux basses latitudes au cours du Quaternaire : une approche combinant modèle et données / Climate and low latitude water cycle variations during the Quaternary : a model-data approach

Extier, Thomas 18 October 2019 (has links)
Quaternary glacial-interglacial cycles are recorded in various climatic archives from high to low latitudes. The EPICA Dome C ice core provides a high-resolution record over the last 800 ka of δ18Oatm (i.e. δ18O of atmospheric O2) which combines past variations of the low latitude water cycle and of the biosphere productivity. In absence of annual layer counting, this proxy can be used for orbital dating in association with the June 21st insolation at 65°N to build an ice core chronology. However a lag of 6 ka between the δ18Oatm and the insolation, classically observed during glacial-interglacial terminations, is applied to the entire record during the chronology construction. This lag and the complexity of the δ18Oatm signal are the main reasons why the ice core chronology presents a high 6 ka uncertainty which limits their interpretation, jointly with other paleoclimate archives, in terms of past climate and environmental variations. To solve this issue I have developed a new ice core chronology based on the relation between the δ18Oatm and the δ18Ocalcite of east-asian speleothems, using new isotope measurements allowing for the first time a complete record over the last 800 ka at Dome C. This new chronology reduces the uncertainties compared to the actual ice core chronology strongly based on δ18Oatm and shows a better sequence of events between the high and low latitudes records. Then, I have developed a model to reproduce the isotopic composition of atmospheric O2 to address the lack of quantitative interpretations of this proxy and to check our assumption of synchronicity with the δ18Ocalcite over several climatic cycles. To reproduce the variations of the δ18Oatm, it was necessary to couple the intermediate complexity climate model iLOVECLIM and the vegetation model CARAIB. Finally, the δ18Oatm variations simulated with the new coupled model over several thousand years are in phase with the insolation of the Northern hemisphere (except during Heinrich events) and with low latitudes δ18Ocalcite variations. This can be explained by changes in the low latitude water cycle related to changes in the isotopic composition of meteoric water used by the terrestrial biosphere during photosynthesis.

The Digital Marmor Parium

Berti, Monica January 2016 (has links)
The Digital Marmor Parium is a project of the Alexander von Humboldt Chair of Digital Humanities at the University of Leipzig (http://www.dh.uni-leipzig.de/wo/dmp). The aim of this work is to produce a new digital edition of the so called Marmor Parium (Parian Marble), which is a Hellenistic chronicle on a marble slab coming from the Greek island of Paros. The importance of the document is due to the fact that it preserves a Greek chronology (1581/80-299/98 BC) with a list of kings and archons accompanied by short references to historical events mainly based on the Athenian history.

Chronological and geographical annotations in DAMOS: database of Mycenaean at Oslo

Aurora, Federico January 2016 (has links)
DAMOS is an online annotated database (MySql) of all published texts of Mycenaean, the earliest attested Greek dialect. The texts are annotated for epigraphical and linguistic features (morphology, syntax, semantics) and provided with a rich set of metadata, which also include chronological and geographical data. Genre (administrative accounts) and physical features (brevity and often fragmentary state) of the Mycenaean texts, and especially their script (Linear B), not well suited for rendering the Greek language, pose challenges to the interpretation of the texts, which often result in multiple possible values of the data at all levels – epigraphical, linguistic, metadata. These may often be organized in competing sets of values, which form coherent different overarching hypotheses on e.g. the grammar of the language or the dating of an archive. These competing values need, thus, to be stored and meaningfully organized in the database. The presentation focuses on how chronological and geographical data (both about the texts and contained in the texts) and their often multiple possible values are dealt with in the arrangement of the database structure of DAMOS.
