Closed Loop Control of PMSM Motor : Field Oriented Control Using Hall Sensors

Fossil-fuel vehicles are one of the main causes of CO2 emissions nowadays. As we are moving toward cleaner environment electrification of vehicles are becoming more and more popular. With the environment in mind, the recent improvement in battery technology and electronics has drawn a lot of attention to Brushless DC or BLDC  motors. Due to their high torque output and robust design, BLDC motors are a popular choice as the main propulsion unit in electric vehicles.  Permanent magnet synchronous motor, PMSM, is also a brushless dc motor with minor changes in design. So the word BLDC and PMSM is used interchangeably. In this thesis, two motor control algorithms were investigated. 6-Step control and Field oriented control or FOC. A three-phase inverter allows these motors to be driven by a battery. But when battery voltage goes down the speed of the motor also goes down. This thesis investigates a method to maintain the same speed at lower dc voltage. Also running of other motors than the control system was designed for. The control system performs well in simulation for two of the motor tested with the FOC algorithm. Simulation results show that the control system can track speed and current references with minimum error. Speed controller and current controllers control each parameter independently to control the motor. Low battery simulations provide useful data that shows how the field weakening technique makes it possible to achieve higher speed at low dc voltages. / Fossildrivna fordon är en av de främsta orsakerna till koldioxidutsläpp i dag. I och med att vi går mot en renare miljö blir elektrifieringen av fordon allt mer populär. Med miljön i åtanke har den senaste tidens förbättring av batteriteknik och elektronik dragit mycket uppmärksamhet till Brushless DC- eller BLDC-motorer som ska användas som huvudframdrivningsenhet. På grund av dess höga vridmomentutgång och robusta design så är BLDC-motorer mer populära. En permanent magnetisk synkronmotor, PMSM, är också en borstlös dc-motor med mindre förändringar i designen. Så orden BLDC och PMSM används omväxlande. I denna avhandling undersöktes två motoriska styralgoritmer. 6-stegskontroll och fältorienterad kontroll eller FOC. En trefas växelriktare gör att dessa motorer kan drivas av ett batteri. Men när batterispänningen går ner går motorns hastighet också ner. Denna avhandling undersöker en metod för att bibehålla samma hastighet vid lägre likspänning, men även drift av andra motorer än vad styrsystemet var konstruerat för. Styrsystemet fungerar bra i simulering för två av de motorer som testas med FOC-algoritmen. Simuleringsresultat visar att styrsystemet kan spåra hastighet och aktuella referenser med minimalt fel. Hastighetsregulator och aktuella styrenheter kontrollerar varje parameter individuellt för att styra motorn. Simuleringar med lågt batteri ger användbara data som visar hur fältförsvagningstekniken gör det möjligt att uppnå högre hastighet vid låg likströmsspänning.

The main aim of this thesis is to design and develop a control unit for a three-phase direct current motor that will be able to maximize its efficiency. To accomplish this request a field oriented control combined with modified phase driving signals is used. The emphasis is put on the creation of a simple and unique solution as well as the ability to use this device in the single wheel wehicle, which previous bachelor thesis was focused on. The first part of this thesis lists some of commercially available and do-it-yourself solutions together with their attributes. The next part describes target motors and different options of how to control them. The third part focuses on the field oriented control, its individual parts and features, as well as the final solution. And finally the realization of the electrical part, firmware, PC application and necessary settings are described at the very end of the thesis.

En oprövad luftmaktsdoktrin : En undersökning av det teoretiska stödet för svensk luftmaktsdoktrin

Swedish air doctrine does not present the origin of its concepts, nor does it support these with theoretical claims. In addition to this, the Swedish air doctrine has not been tested in a real life conflict. Therefore, it is considered unverified. The aim of this paper is to ascertain the theoretical support for the doctrine. Using two contemporary theorists, namely John Warden and Shaun Clarke, the theoretical support for the doctrine is analyzed. This is achieved by studying two of the doctrine’s principal documents, Operativ Doktrin 14 and Reglemente: Taktik för luftoperationer, while applying a qualitative method. The thesis finds that the Swedish air doctrine has convincing theoretical support, without any evident difference in support between the two theories. Furthermore, none of the studied aspects of the doctrine are questioned by the theories. Although the study presented rather conclusive results, further research should be conducted in order to find support amongst other theories. The purpose would be to widen the theoretical scope as well as to further strengthen or question the support.

SPOT-bombing i Falklandskriget?

This study aims to test the strength of Shaun Clarkes air theory SPOT-bombing for small nations, to see if the theory could be of good use for all the small states around the world which are not able to master the capacity needed for large nation air theories. The British use of airpower during the Falkland war serves as case which is compared to the SPOT-bombing theory. The British task force, although much smaller than the Argentine military force, succeeded to win the war through extensive use of airpower. The studies analytic results reveal that the indicators taken from the air theory are not found to any greater extent in the British use of airpower during the war. Therefore this study is not able to strengthen or falsify Clarkes air theory as a whole, but reaches the conclusion that using unconventional methods are useful for a smaller state to get effect on strategic level against a larger opponent. Still, after this study there is more work to be done to test the relevance of the SPOT-bombing for small nations air theory, to be able to state if it is worth for small states to base their airpower doctrines upon it.

The Evolution of the Ride Cymbal Pattern from 1917 to 1941: An Historical and Critical Analysis

The purpose of this study is to provide a historiographical and musical analysis examining the jazz ride cymbal pattern, from its inception on woodblock, small accessory cymbals, hand cymbal mechanisms and brushes through what becomes known as the modern-day ride cymbal pattern. This research examines a wide array of drummers and bandleaders, with the objective of identifying the earliest recordings of this important addition to jazz drumming, and popular music history while analyzing the ride cymbal pattern's evolution through definitive recordings. The study begins with the earliest known recordings that clearly display the pattern as it is played on any of the instruments mentioned above. The research concludes with the jam sessions of the early 1940s at Minton's Playhouse, where the pioneer of bebop drumming, Kenny Clarke, experimented with altering the pattern. At this point, the pattern reach its final level of maturity and has since experienced no subsequent major modification. The historical and geographical analysis uses relevant literature from the field of jazz history in order to interpret and evaluate the impact of the the overall trajectory of the music and players. By surveying newspaper and magazine articles, archival interviews, and photographic sources, combined with audio and film analysis, it is clear that drummers navigated a path to the maturation of the pattern.

The specific case of interplanetary trips, theorized and thought scientificaly and advertised under a sci - fi language in books of Carl Sagan, is what this dissertation talks about.The authors of fiction texts, such as Sagan Arthur Charles Clarke and Issac Asimov, try to found their extrpolate in careful notes of trends that happen in society and science, and develop the ( narration, in Asmov and Clarke´s case ) implication or advertising with rigidity and consistency.On the other hand, part of the futuristic literature would be an important History of Science analysis instrument, for it to be possible of thinking in alternative proposals for a scientific policy and taught which may have a social reach. In other words, what is studied here, is the relation between sci - fi and science, which talks about interplanetary trips, and how they are explained in Sagan´s books. However, the dissertation, delimitates, in the first instance, must be considered about interplanetary trips, its dissimilation from the 30´s to the 60´s and the adverstising through two of the best sci - fi writers of the twentieth century, whose work was to advertise scientific ideas or Astronautic for a better understanding of the science, its role and the impact of science and technology, in a society which moves really fast, but without many details. After all, as it was a relevant realization of some of these realized fantasies by Carl Sagan´s commitment, initially, with the American industial military complexduring the Cold War against USSR, and after that by NASA.And what we have learned scientifically from the exploration of the Solar Sistem and the nearest planets, in a way that the results of this spacial exploration could be advertised with the help from literature and fiction, in a type of alert about the problems that we will have to face in a near future. At last, the mankind destiny, imagined by Sagan in a kind of manifest advertised by himself in his main books and analysed here for it to be possible to keep its parallelism of contents and trends between sci - fi books and the academic literatureabout the development of science and technology and the destiny of mankind and the individuals that make itself. Grace Julian Clarke: The Emergence of a Political Actor, 1915-1920

Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / The perspectives of unique suffragists and clubwomen in Indiana, like Grace Julian Clarke, reflect the typically overlooked narrative of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Far from a bystander, Clarke engaged in political wars at the state level long before having the right to vote. She demonstrated this ability early on when she acted as a campaign manager during the 1915 Indiana Federation of Clubs presidential election. By its end, club women around the state knew who Clarke was, trusted her word, and looked to her for critical information. As World War I encroached and threatened the nationwide fight for suffrage, Clarke again remained loyal to suffrage by using war-related activities to promote and expand awareness of women’s work and abilities in Indiana. Clarke strategically used these activities as a tool to advocate for enfranchisement by pressing leaders on her belief that women had earned their rightful place as equal partners. Although she stayed active in the suffrage movement throughout the war, it became clear toward its end that her assets as a political leader were demanded at a higher level. As such, she turned her attention toward international affairs (particularly the League of Nations) and away from suffrage. Though the United States never joined the League of Nations, Clarke’s advocacy of the covenant was critical in her formation as a true political influencer. By the time the covenant was being disputed at the national level, Clarke was corresponding with national leaders to coordinate speaking events around the state. She became more exclusive in these speaking engagements, as there were very few women who actually understood the covenant well enough to speak on its behalf. Clarke was unique in her ability to speak out for her own values, in large part due to the influence of her father, former Congressman George W. Julian. Her story demonstrates that women’s political influence did not begin nor end with the 19th amendment. Rather, women’s political influence evolved over time, and is still evolving today.

Design Of Innovative Mechanisms For Contemporary Game Theoretic Problems In Electronic Commerce

Game theory and mechanism design have emerged as an important tool to model, analyze,and solve decentralized design problems involving multiple agents that interact strategically in a rational and intelligent way. Some examples of these design problems include: auctions and markets in electronic commerce; network economics; dynamic pricing; routing protocols in wireless networks; resource allocation in computational grids; algorithms for selfish agents;etc. The motivation for this doctoral work springs from the high level of current interest indesigning innovative mechanisms for solving emerging game theoretic problems in the area of electronic commerce. In this thesis, we focus on three such problems and advance the current art in mechanism design while developing new, innovative mechanisms to solve the problems. The first problem we explore is the highly strategic problem of forming a high value E-business supply chain by choosing the best mix of supply chain partners. In our research, we formulate the supply chain formation problem as a mechanism design problem in a generic wayand show that the well known VCG (Vickrey-Clarke-Groves) mechanisms provide an apt frame-work for solving this problem. We provide a compelling example of a three stage automotive distribution network to illustrate the power and e±cacy of the proposed methodology. The second problem we model and solve is that of designing a revenue maximizing sponsored search auction. This is a problem that is faced by every Internet search engine, such as Google,MSN, and Yahoo!, whenever it receives a search query. In our research, we take a comprehensivelook at existing auction mechanisms for this problem. Our work leads to an innovative new auction mechanism, which we call OPT (optimal mechanism), that exhibits a superior level ofperformance. The proposed mechanism extends, in a non-trivial way, the well known Myersonoptimal auction to the specific setting of sponsored search auctions. The proposed mechanism maximizes the revenue to the search engine and also satisfies two crucial properties, Bayesian incentive compatibility and interim individual rationality. The third contribution is in respect of Stackelberg problems, which are game theoretic problems that involve hierarchical and sequential decision making. By focusing attention on an important subclass of these problems, namely the Single-Leader-Rest-Followers (SLRF) problems, we extend all relevant aspects of classical mechanism design theory to the case of SLRF problems. We derive many important results in respect of procurement auctions with reserve prices using the developed theory. The research carried out as part of this doctoral work, we believe, advances the current art in mechanism design while developing innovative mechanisms to solve those problems.
