Belysning i kulturhistoriskt värdefulla miljöer är en komplicerad fråga, där generella riktlinjer och råd saknas. Kulturvården och belysningsbranschen sitter på stor kompetens inom sina respektive områden och här finns stor potential till värdefulla samarbeten över branschgränsen. När sådana samarbeten uteblir får det konse- kvenser för både de belysningsmässiga och antikvariska aspekterna. Ljus och belysning har stor inverkan på upplevelsen av rum och byggnader. När detta översätts till kulturhi- storiska värden, har ljuset inte minst en påverkan på upplevelsevärden och symbolvärden. Därför kan gestalt- ningen av belysning ha en inverkan på kulturhistoriska värden, som överskrider inverkan av den fysiska belys- ningsinstallationen. Det här beaktas sällan när beslut om ny belysning fattas. Ljus kan även betraktas som ett eget immateriellt kulturarv, vilket ytterligare komplicerar frågan om belys- ning i kulturhistoriska miljöer. I egenskap av kulturarv kan ljus, ljusupplevelser och ljusfenomen tillskrivas kul- turhistoriska värden som endast berör det immateriella. Om dessa också tas hänsyn till blir det inte bara en fråga om att vårda med ljus, utan även att vårda ljuset. / Lighting in historical environments is complicated question, lacking general guidelines and advice. The conser- vation sector and the lighting industry have good expertise in their respective areas and there is great potential for valuable collaborations. When such collaboration fails, it has consequences for aspects regarding both lighting and conservation. Lighting has a major impact on the experience of rooms and buildings. When it comes to conservation and questions of cultural significance this can be translated into experience values and symbolic values. Therefore, the lighting design can have an impact on the cultural significance, that exceeds the impact of the physical lighting installation. This is rarely taken into account when deciding on new lighting installations. Light can also be considered its own intangible cultural heritage, which further complicates the question of lighting in historical environments. It becomes not only a matter of lighting as a tool for preservation but also of preserving light.

No / This chapter summarises AHRC/EPSRC Science and Heritage Programme-funded research to develop a digital resource to disseminate knowledge of the identification of osseous and keratinous animal hard tissues. The choice of materials in the manufacture of individual artefacts or classes of objects can make a major contribution to understanding their cultural significance and questions of provenance or authenticity. This resource builds on understanding gained through a Fellowship to O’Connor in developing, evaluating and validating identification criteria for these materials in raw, worked and decayed states. The resource concentrates on the non-destructive visual methods of particular relevance to the examination of artworks, historic and archaeological artefacts. The chapter highlights the potential of various visualisation methods and digital technologies to capture and combine 2D images and 3D models and guide the viewer through the multi-scalar visual cues of each material to a reliable identification. By accessing a range of collections, the project has produced a comprehensive and accessible resource, disseminating these findings more widely than could be achieved by a physical reference collection. The main subject of the thesis is multi-layered historical towns which are formed as
a result of collective creation process and continuous inhabitancy that new buildings,
edifices and open areas superimpose in time forming a specific character which can
be defined as multi-layeredness. Considering the specific character of multi-layered
towns, the principles for the presentation of historical stratification is the foremost
objective of the thesis.
The thesis focuses on & / #8216 / presentation principles based on cultural significance of
multi-layered historical towns so as to conserve, sustain and present their specific
character as an integral part of the conservation process.
Therefore, the aim of this thesis is to determine presentation principles for multilayered
historical towns in order to reveal and conserve their historical stratification
by assessing the historical continuities, interruptions and transformations based on
the cultural significance of multi-layeredness.
Focusing on this aim, the thesis is structured in two parts as the identification of
presentation principles for multi-layered historical towns, discussing the information
groups effecting the determination of cultural significance followed by the
implementation of these principles on a concrete example as the case study.
Subsequently, a proposal for the presentation principles guiding the design stages
together with the identification of information groups for the determination of cultural
significance is apprehended for the case study.
The case study selected in the thesis for the implementation of the proposed
principles is Tarsus which is a multi-layered historical town in Turkey having
presentation potential for historical stratification.
To conclude, depending on the cultural significance specific to multi-layered
historical towns, presentation is a way for the understanding and dissemination of
these significances. The presentation principles set in this thesis can be regarded as
a part of the conservation planning that has to be integrated to the existing process
and it is possible to state that these principles are essential for the conservation and
sustainability of multi-layered character of historical towns.

Site Specific Opera : a Re-imagined Magic Flute as a Catalyst to the Narration of Fort Daspoortrand HeritageLevenderis, Leandra Paula Rosa January 2018 (has links)
With the current upsurge of a technological era, there is an underlying global threat to the cultural development of theatre, especially opera. Therefore, there is a need for a paradigm shift that will re-imagine and transcend opera into the 21st century.
Site-specific opera merges the potential of theatrical entertainment and the value of an existing site. Both the location and the performance have the ability to remove the audience from their lives and submerge them in a fantasy or created reality. With the focal approach being the interpretation of the Magic Flute Opera at a site-specific location, a concept of cultural heritage awareness is revealed. With this in mind, the preservation extends into a consideration of the existing site. The site, Fort Daspoortrand, is currently in a state of physical degradation, and the decay of heritage and cultural fabric is prominent. Thus, the potential for preservation and cultural celebration arises.
It is proposed that through a site-specific opera performance of William Kentridge’s adaptation of The Magic Flute by Mozart, a sense of wareness can be created for both the site and a South African interpretation of opera. The opera will catalyse the awareness of the site, and the scenography will act as a vehicle to bring site and opera together in a visual and spatial experience. Through the merging of opera and site, the heritage and cultural significance of both entities will be explored, allowing the opportunity for life to be breathed back into both the fort and opera in general.
The design intention of this project is to bring awareness to the existing fabric of the site, as well as the dramatic opportunities that the site naturally presents. In this way, the physical and cultural decay of both Fort Daspoortrand and opera are brought to the public’s attention. The intention in this creation of site awareness is to promote an afterlife for the site, by exposing its character in an attempt to ignite future development at the site once the opera has finished. Through combining opera and site, the audience will be exposed to the beauty of the site and the cultural richness of opera simultaneously. The temporary design intervention aims to strategically link the themes of The Magic Flute with the characteristics of the site to explore the relationship between narrative, fort and opera. Emphasis is placed on how to take the audience on a winding and intertwining journey of the site during the performance of the opera adaptation. Language as a Leading Light to Business Cultural Insight : A Study on Expatriates' Intercultural Communication in Central and Eastern EuropeLjungbo, Kjell January 2010 (has links)
Language competence is decisively important in international business and could increase efficacy, efficiency, sales and profits. Language is an underresearched area in business studies though language constitutes management and the managers building structures, processes, cultures and personalities being the most vital working tool to get things done and make them understandable. Since 1970 Swedish companies lose market shares globally and in Europe. In an era requiring better foreign language skills there is a declining trend among young Swedish business people and students in other languages than English. The aim of this study is to investigate and analyse the role of language in intercultural business communication between Swedish expatriates and locals in Serbia, The Czech Republic, Ukraine, Romania and Bulgaria and indirectly also Russia and Poland. To understand the business culture in these countries the author has learned the local language in these seven countries taking 3687 private language lessons. This improves the researcher’s understanding of the culture and its people giving directness and depth in communication, independence and receptivity. This ethnographically inspired hermeneutic study holds semi-structured interviews with expatriates. Better language skills among expatriates – particularly in the local language - could make them more self-dependent and win contracts and it strengthens closeness to customers, relationship and trust, strategic view and ability and also operational effectiveness and efficiency enabling their companies to gain market shares. Using Weber’s ideal types the cultural significance structures emerge featuring the cultures in these countries showing that expatriates have to strengthen the ability of the locals in the areas of trust, responsibility and initiative, independent thinking, holistic view, win-win thinking and reduce fear while the expatriates’ own abilities in these areas are strengthened if they speak the local language. Language strategies permitting the expatriate to be more communicatively and linguistically self-dependent are having a common company language, using multilingualism or having the expatriate speak or learn to speak the local language where the advantages, disadvantages and characteristics of these and other aspects of the role of language are given in ideal types.

Using ethnobotanical, anthropological and social science theory and methods this
work illustrates significance of studying traditional foods and their medicinal qualities
for maintaining health. Set in the background of the communities¿ practises and
rituals specific plant-based items, used by Sikh and Ukrainian migrant communities,
are a central focus to understanding the significance of practises and related
knowledge for maintaining health and the broader concept of ¿well-being¿. Literature
review, participant observation and in-depth interviewing techniques were used to
identify 126 species of plants mentioned. These illustrate what was a primarily
female domain of knowledge now becoming superficial and spread over domains of
both men and women. This study notes convenience in terms of time and transport,
changes in markets in the UK, importation of goods and the use of machinery and
techniques such as freezing, and intervention by healthcare professionals have all
affected the way traditional foods and remedies are perceived and practised. There
are key foods which will remain important for generations to come whilst the domains
are changing. Specific community structures support maintenance of food practises,
including langar within the Sikh community and the regular OAP Ukrainian
lunchtime club and numerous food events where foods with particular religious and
cultural significance are made by at least two generations. These events involve
transmission of knowledge related to foods and their health qualities, including
images of strength as a ¿people¿. By questioning the significance of emic perspectives
healthcare professionals and policymakers could learn much from practises developed
over centuries or millennia.

Effective language translation, especially in tourist centers, can not only help tourists better understand the local culture, but also improve the overall impression of tourists. Therefore the study of the translation of digital terms into publicly available signage is of great importance for improving intercultural exchanges. The purpose of the study is to in-depth study the use of numbers and methods of their translation in public signs in China and Russia. By analyzing the differences in the semantics and use of numerals in two languages, this study attempts to identify the complexity and difficulties of translating numerals in intercultural communication.

Ownership of South African street art and the protection of cultural heritage resourcesSmith, Sarah Rutherford 09 1900 (has links)
The development of graffiti into an accepted art form, street art, is a cause of concern for South African property owners. The current position in South African property law regarding the original acquisition of ownership suggests that the creation of street art on movable property belonging to another could result in the transfer of ownership. Ownership of the movable may transfer via accessio to the street artist provided that the artwork changes the nature of the movable. This would occur even if the street artist does not act in good faith because bona fides is not a requirement for the original acquisition of ownership via accessio. This anomaly requires that the South African law on accession in the case of pictura be developed such that good faith be a requirement for the transfer of ownership in this format. With the development and growing popularity of the art form the likelihood of this legal anomaly is becoming a greater possibility. Indeed, the popularity of British street artist, Banksy, has provided numerous examples of contested ownership, albeit within English law. Banksy artworks are collectable and financially valuable. Consequently, not only are they desirable but many of his street artworks are considered to be examples of British cultural heritage and as such may be worthy of protection and preservation. These cases highlight the growing need in South Africa to clearly identify who South African street artworks belong to and, to identify any South African street art that warrants cultural heritage protection. The legislation regarding the protection of South African cultural heritage resources has not yet been extended to any street artworks. Yet there are examples of street art in South Africa that meet the requirements for cultural heritage status or which have the characteristics of cultural heritage resources. The extension of cultural heritage resource status to South African street artworks that are culturally significant could assist in the protection and preservation of these resources. However, the effectiveness of the cultural heritage legislation, in particular the National Heritage Resources Act 25 of 1999, is limited. There are several problematic aspects in this Act. This is of great concern as the issues effect all South Africa’s cultural heritage resources (not just street art which may qualify for such status). However, these issues could be responded to through amendments to the legislation.
Significantly, the National Heritage Resources Act seeks to deprive private owners of their property as it seeks to regulate what owners can do with cultural heritage property which they own. However, as it stands there are far too many challengeable issues in this legislation to justifiably deprive this property in terms of s25 of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, 1996. This renders significant portions of the National Heritage Resources Act inoperable. Consequently, the amendment of this legislation is necessary to ensure the purpose of the legislation i.e. to ensure the protection and preservation of the South Africa’s cultural heritage resources through the deprivation of property rights or indeed, if necessary, through the expropriation of property. / College of Law / LL. The aim of this study is to investigate Swedish upper secondary school teachers’ statements regarding reading and teaching choices in the English courses. The methods used were a survey in the form of a qualitative questionnaire, and a qualitative content analysis which was then applied to the survey data gathered. Reception theory and literary socialization theory were applied to the results. The four main research questions were: 1. What English literature do teachers in Swedish college preparatory programs choose for their students? 2. What English literature do teachers in Swedish vocational programs choose for their students? 3. What aspects of reception theory and literary socialization theory correspond to the teachers’ questionnaire answers regarding what skills they wish their students to acquire from reading English literature? 4. What are teachers’ attitudes towards students reading books of cultural, historical, and literary significance? The results concluded that there was no significant difference in the types of books chosen for the two programs. The college preparatory programs read a little more classical fiction, but the vocational courses did not lag far behind. When it came to the theories, a majority of teachers mentioned aspects brought up within literary socialization theory, while reception theory was barely touched upon. Books of literary, cultural, and historical significance were expected to be read in both the college preparatory and vocational programs. However, students in the college preparatory programs were expected to read these books slightly more than students in the vocational programs. One suggestion for future research is to examine the number of books teachers read within or outside of their preferred genre and how choice of genre may affect their literacy teaching in the classroom. / Syftet med den här studien är att undersöka svenska gymnasielärares läs- och undervisningsval i engelskundervisningen. Metoderna som användes var en enkätundersökning i form av ett kvalitativt frågeformulär och en kvalitativ innehållsanalys som sedan tillämpades på den insamlade enkätdatan. Receptionsteori och litterär socialisationsteori tillämpades på resultatet. De fyra huvudsakliga forskningsfrågorna var: 1. Vilken engelsk litteratur väljer lärare för elever på svenska högskoleförberedande program? 2. Vilken engelsk litteratur väljer lärare för elever på svenska yrkesprogram? 3. Vilka aspekter av receptionsteorin och litterär socialisationsteori stämmer överens med lärarnas enkätsvar om vilka färdigheter de önskar att deras elever ska förvärva genom att läsa engelsk litteratur? 4. Vilka är lärarnas attityder till att eleverna läser böcker av kulturell, historisk och litterär betydelse? Genom resultaten drogs slutsatsen att det inte fanns någon större skillnad i de typer av böcker som valdes för högskoleförberedande gentemot yrkesprogram. De högskoleförberedande programmen läste i ringa mängd mer klassisk skönlitteratur, men yrkesprogrammen hamnade inte långt efter. När det gällde teorierna nämnde majoriteten av lärarna aspekter som togs upp inom den litterära socialisationsteorin, medan aspekter inom receptionsteorin knappt berördes.Böcker av litterär, kulturell och historisk betydelse förväntades bli lästa i både de högskoleförberedande programmen och yrkesprogrammen. De högskoleförberedande programmen förväntades dock läsa dessa böcker i något större utsträckning än yrkesprogrammen. Ett förslag till framtida forskning är att undersöka hur många böcker lärare läser inom eller utanför den genre de föredrar och hur vald genreläsning kan påverka deras läs- och skrivundervisning (litteracitet) i klassrummet.
