Souza, Thiago Sebben de January 2016 (has links)
This study deals with the issue of depiction in the context of artistic representation and focuses in the basic concepts developed on the subject by Ernst Gombrich, Nelson Goodman e Richard Wollheim. It focuses on the search for evidence in the conceptual framework of these authors for the support for the development of a theory of depiction that assumes twofoldness in a way that is compatible with the treatment of the concept in structural terms. Some specific drawbacks in relation to aspects of Gombrich's theory sets the ground for the explanation why Wollheim develops a twofoldness theory of depiction, and the interpretative hypothesis offered on this topic in relation to Goodman's theory aims to show that a structural approach of depiction as a symbolic system does not entail a strict or full blown conventionalism, insofar as the perception of similarities in relation to aspects in the comparison between the objects of representation and representations themselves are important for establishing the understanding of images, in an open framework of conventionalization that are no to be set arbitrarily, but that are compatible with the development with a principle of definition established by the artistic practice.

The dissertation discusses a set of four paintings of Maria Pardos, produced from 1913 to 1916: Jornaleiro, Sem pão, Chiquinho do Tico-Tico and Sem título, all of them depictions of child/childhood. It analyses the main features of these works, examining them under the context of production and reception, as well as their iconography, considering the creation process of the artist. It emphasizes its consonance with national and international painting from the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. By combining several sources, both visual and written ones, it follows the strategies pursued by Maria Pardos in the art scene. It shows the construction of genre scenes, narratives of intimacy of the private world, brought to art salons aiming to awards and professional recognition. It enters a period of historiographic gap in both the history of Brazilian art and women's history. In this sense it was extremely necessary to biographical construction of the artist, without claiming to exhaust the subject.

Žena v komiksu: Srovnání vizuálního zobrazení ženy v komiksu a její role/funkce v komiksu. / Woman in Comics: Comparison of Woman Visual Depictions and Her Function and Role in Comics

Oswaldová, Alena January 2008 (has links)
Diploma thesis "Woman in Comics: Comparison of Woman Visual Depictions and Her Function and Role in Comics" is internally divided into two parts: a theoretical and a research part. The theoretical part introduces a history of comics, from the beginning of this medium till present and focuses on woman comics characters and their typologies. The analytical part of the diploma work presents own research which deals with visual depiction of women in comics: examines their functions and roles in comics and bindings to the depictions. A part of the research section of this work is also comics codes analysis (genre, modality, visual codes, nonverbal and language codes), summary of quantitative researches of female characters in comics and basic information about analysed comics (author of the comics, category etc.). The researched sample is composed of three comics: Li'l Abner (author: Al Capp), Wonder Woman (author: Charles Moulton), Strangers in Paradise (author: Terry Moore). Outcome of this research is a survey of analysed female and male characters, a summary of the visual analysis and implying results.

Lubambo, Remah Joyce 07 August 2020 (has links)
Includes bibliographical references (leaves 103-107) / This study explored the role played by Siswati folktales in building the character of boys. It included how boys are depicted in folktales and how this depiction influences boys in real life. The study further investigated the correlation between traditional and modern boys and tried to uncover the value of folktales regarding the boys of today. The way boys are portrayed in folktales, their heroism in fighting and conquering monsters, could encourage present-day boys to fight the monsters that they come across daily. Based on the application of the lessons from folktales, the study examined how societal changes affect boys today. / African Languages / M.A. (African Languages)

The Effects of Event Depictions in Second Language Phrasal Vocabulary Learning

Nguyen, Huong Thi Thu 05 April 2022 (has links)
Previous studies of L2 vocabulary learning presented visual context effects on L2 word and collocation learning and processing. It was found that L1 has a positive transfer in L2 learning when words have similarities. Furthermore, the influences of learners’ cognitive ability and their age of acquisition (AoA) in L2 vocabulary learning have been found in diverse L2 vocabulary learning conditions. The present dissertation aimed to further investigate the effects of visual context and transfer on L2 learning, as well as how cognitive ability and AoA influence any such effects in a particular L2 vocabulary learning context. In detail, we investigated event depiction (i.e., non-linguistic visual context) effects and L1–L2 transfer effects on L2 phrasal vocabulary (i.e., verb-noun phrases) learning for adult beginners. We conducted short-term L2 vocabulary learning experiments during which we measured reaction times. Two other research questions examined whether there are relationships between learners’ AoA or their cognitive ability and their L2 vocabulary learning success in a short-term L2 learning setting. Results showed adult L2 beginners benefited from visual depictions in L2 vocabulary learning: They were more accurate and faster in event-present learning conditions than in event-absent learning conditions. These effects were not only replicated with young adults aged 18 to 31 in three experiments, but they also extended to early and late middle-aged adults aged 32 to 65. The prior research suggested that the L1–L2 similarity might influence L2 learning, but not in our L2 learning context. In addition, the AoA of subjects was manipulated, which resulted in young adults performing in the cognitive test and L2 learning tasks best compared to the other two groups. Based on the findings of our research, we were able to identify which factors strongly influence L2 vocabulary learning success for L2 adult beginners and that L2 phrasal vocabulary learning with depicted event photographs can be applied.

Shape depiction using Local Light Alignment : Evaluating the shape enhancement capabilities of the Local Light Alignment technique at multiple scales / Formskildring med hjälp av Local Light Alignment : Utvärdering av den formskildringsförbättrande förmågan hos Local Light Alignment över en skal-rymd

Ahlsén, Edvard January 2023 (has links)
Local Light Alignment is a new shading based technique in the field of shape depiction, a field which concerns itself with techniques to represent and enhance the three-dimensional (3D) shape of objects in two-dimensional (2D) visual media. The main idea of Local Light Alignment is to locally adjust the incoming direction of light to create contrast in a way that enhances the perception of shape and surface detail. It is aimed at visual artists and uses a multiple scale approach, where the user can tune the enhancement of geometric shapes of different sizes. Local Light Alignment was published together with a new objective metric for measuring shape depiction called the congruence score. This thesis strives to increase knowledge about both these new techniques by investigating how varying several parameters for Local Light Alignment affect the congruence score at different scales and strengths of enhancement. The parameters investigated are the range and spatial parameters for the bilateral filter in the scale space construction as well as the enhancement strength parameter of the main Local Light Alignment algorithm. The thesis also tries to identify any common visual characteristics for images that score high, to give a better intuition of what the congruence score represents. The tests are performed using four models, each representing a different field of application. For each model, several viewpoints are tested, and for every viewpoint, 244 differently parameterized renders are produced and scored. The results notably show that the spatial and range parameters both affect controllability of the algorithm by shifting the scores toward the finer end of the scale space with higher values, without affecting the total score. The enhancement strength parameter is shown to affect the congruence score positively, but with diminishing returns as values approach 1. It is also shown by example that the images showing the largest improvement in congruence score tend to exhibit such high degrees of exaggeration that they would probably not be considered good examples of shape depiction by human standards. This is identified as an interesting area to perform subjective evaluations in future research. These investigations will be valuable to those who will create application software that features Local Light Alignment, as well as those wanting to employ the congruence score metric.

Solchenbach, Karl 28 April 2023 (has links)
In the 14th century the formation and consolidation of the territorial sovereignties of the archbishop-electors of Trier and the dukes of Luxemburg was largely completed. The transformation towards territorial states resulted in the formation of an increasingly clear border between the two territories. However, the simplified representation of complex, partly overlapping border zones in the form of abstracting lines had yet to be developed. The earliest regional maps in the humanistic period of the first half of the 16th century do not show any borders, the first regional map with an indicated partial border marking date from 1555.
