Domestic violence: the experiences of young adult females

Themistocleous, Nicola 08 1900 (has links)
There has been a vast amount of research regarding domestic violence. However, the literature is centered on a linear, cause and effect approach. This study aimed to explore domestic violence from the experiences of young female adults, and will be approached from a postmodern perspective. The participants were selected based on purposive sampling and willingness to participate. The sample consists of two participants and the data was obtained through their written stories and semi-structured face-to-face interviews. Themes were then extracted from the data and were explored through hermeneutic analysis which is consistent with the postmodern approach. A qualitative methodological design was used in order to allow meaning to emerge. The results were then presented in an interpretive and descriptive manner. / Psychology / M.A. (Clinical Psychology)

Uma reflexão sobre a formação da identidade feminina em mulheres vítimas de violência doméstica / A reflection on the formation of female identity in women victims of domestic violence

Lima, Ana Paula Mallet [UNIFESP] 24 February 2010 (has links) (PDF)
Made available in DSpace on 2015-07-22T20:50:55Z (GMT). / Domestic violence against women in Brazil and the world is a matter of concern at the present time. This is a surprisingly contemporary phenomenon, although it has occurred throughout the history of mankind. Violence in relations between the two shows a dynamic of power and a kind of effect which are present in domination and submission characterized by the gender differences that can be seen to the extent that the internal division of roles is configured in rights and duties with privileges to one of the parties within the family environment. Work in human sciences has given us an understanding of the context of psychological damage involving women in situations of domestic violence, as well as the historical and social context that seem to point to a woman in need of mentors for those who have a condition of dependence and co – dependency. This dissertation, which is based on psychology combined with psychiatry, aims to investigate whether battered women had mothers mothers that were abused. We have investigated some aspects of female identity and motherhood that are related to the growth and training of women in situations of family violence, as well as posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) as it occurs in these cases. The methodology is the qualitative technique of a semi-structured script of questions that guide the research subjects. These were used as tools to diagnose whether or not there is PTSD and also its severity, and used for the presence of a history of abuse and trauma during childhood and adolescence of these women. The participants were patients in the outpatient clinic a facility for the treatment of violence. Also patients were referred from the Womens Police Unit, from a collection of survey data and from other author. Data analysis was based on the theoretical resources-historical and anthropological, as well as fundamentals of analytical psychology. The results showed that participants had a family structure based on episodes or in the context of violence, where the mother-daughter relationship is important in the transmission of gender inequality, and is considerably preconditioned with PTSD due to emotional problems from this violent environment in childhood. At the conclusion of this study, we arrived at the idea of this paper on the importance of the maternal role in the formation of female identity, since the mother carries the standard historical-social and cultural status of women and also a marked psychological the context of violence, sharing with her daughter, acting or receiving violence, directly or indirectly through the psychological, which is home to other forms of domestic violence. Through this framework, there is a structure prone to psycho trigger PTSD in adulthood their daughters, victims of domestic violence.

Schumacher, Gabriela Souza January 2016 (has links)
Background: Violence against children is a problem that is assuming epidemic proportions, manifesting itself in all cultures, social classes, schooling levels, income brackets and ethnic origins. Such a phenomenon, which contradicts obligations to respect human rights and the child's developmental needs, is often approved and authorized by society and the State. In view of the problem presented, the Brazilian legislation determines, to the Health System, different obligations, aiming at restoring the violated rights of children and adolescents victims of violence. These obligations involve the integral care of the children's health, including, as an obligation, the notification of cases of suspected or confirmed violence. Despite the legal provisions, the care of children and adolescents victims of abuse is poorly structured in many places througout country, being insufficient for the demand that reaches the health services. Aim: To evaluate the hospital care of children in situations of violence. Method: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 28 professionals who work in the care of children victims of violence. Questions about perceptions of violence, understanding about child protection and interdisciplinarity, and perceptions about the different intra- and extra-hospital protection resources were included. The data evaluation was performed with the QSR NVivo ® program, version 11, using as a reference the Content Analysis. Conclusion: Based on the present study, it can be observed that the hospital attendance of children in a situation of violence sometimes presents in a precarious way. Such precariousness arises from the limitation and fragmentation that health professionals demonstrate regarding the perception and understanding of violence and protection of children.

I killed my child(ren) : a qualitative study exploring the phenomenon of paternal filicide in the South African context

Sedumedi, Tumisang Precious January 2018 (has links)
The present research investigated paternal filicide in South Africa. It aimed to understand the factors underlying fathers killing their child/children. Study one explored paternal filicidal offenders' processes of construction, construing of events leading to the filicide, and meanings of their lived experience of killing their child/children. Study two examined the filicidal offenders' extended families' construction processes, construing of events before the killing, lived experience and construing of filicide, and construing of the filicidal offenders' construing of the filicide. Four paternal filicidal offenders and nine family members of the offenders who had different backgrounds (i.e., age, racial, ethnicity, cultural, educational, occupational, and the nature of the filicide) were purposively sampled and recruited into the research. Personal construct theory (Kelly, 1955) underpinned this research. A semi-structured individual interview which was structured according to the Experience Cycle Methodology (ECM) interview proforma (Oades & Viney, 2012), Perceive Element Grid (PEG) (Procter, 2002), and the ABC model (Tschudi, 1977), were administered to the filicidal and family participants. Data was analysed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (Smith, Flowers, & Larkin, 2009) and personal construct analytic methods (diagnostic construct analysis, PEG, ECM, and the ABC model). The analysed themes suggest that filicide might co-occur with familicide and attempted suicide by the offender in some instances. While in many filicidal cases intimate/marital problems might be contributing factors, in a few cases filicide might be accidental in which it might not be precipitated by intimate/marital discord. Most filicidal offenders who tend to only construe their partners/wives and intimate/marital relationships in terms of positive construct poles might slot rattle when encountering invalidations of constructions. The encountered problems might trigger threat, anxiety, in which the problems are experienced as unconstruable, and anger which might lead to hostility. The filicidal offenders might lack constructions to deal with the issues which might result in unaddressed problems which might lead to a sense of being overwhelmed and feelings of hopelessness. The filicidal offenders might broaden or delimit their perceptual field or fluctuate between constriction and dilation to construe and cope with the situation. They might exceed their inhibition ability which might result in the avoided issues and inhibited feelings exploding in violence. The extended family members might not intervene in the couples' problems, if intervening might be possible, because of an unawareness of issues as a result of submergence and constriction in which they avoid construing the couples' problems, limit their views to issues, and minimise the seriousness of the construed problems. Psychological support, personal construct family therapy and Employee Assistance Program, might help the filicidal offenders cope with their intimate/marital problems, and therefore might prevent filicide. Considering the implications of the filicide on the offenders' identities, relations, and relationships, and also the relationships of their families, intervention programs such as Restorative Justice and sport might help the offenders re-establish their sense of self, find commonality and sociality while rebuilding the damaged relationships.

Domestic Violence: The Adolescents' Perspectives on the Barriers and the Facilitators of Social Intervention : A Systematic Literature Review

Gonçalves, Catarina January 2018 (has links)
Domestic violence is often experienced as a crisis period, and it may impact children’s well-being, everyday functioning and development. To promote these minors’ resilience, social intervention is extremely important. The support and responses attributed to these children are not always adequate for their needs and interests. Considering children’s perspectives on social intervention is crucial to improve and to provide complete social work responses. A systematic literature review was conducted, aiming to analyze how children exposed to domestic violence characterize the barriers and facilitators of social intervention. Through two databases, 8 articles were found, related to adolescents’ perspectives on social intervention in situations of domestic violence. The participants were children aged 12-18 years, who were witnesses of violence between parents or who suffered abuses from one/both parent(s). Findings demonstrated the main factors of social intervention that children recognized as being negative and unhelpful (barriers), and as being positive and helpful (facilitators). The identified barriers were lateness, mistrust, lack of child perspective, passivity, lack of value, malice, boredom, and inaccessibility. On the other hand, the established facilitators were protection, trust, child perspective, active listening, value, accessibility, sympathy, sharing, and information. Implications for social workers are provided, centered on specialized trainings and guidance, and on the use of appropriate methods when intervening with children. Also, the necessity to expand the quantity of research related to the child’s perspective on social intervention is highlighted.

Daniéli Busanello Krob 22 February 2013 (has links)
Neste ponto, a Teologia Feminista contribuiu solidamente. / This research is based on the application of Music Therapy to treat the emotional damage resulting from domestic violence, based on theories, concepts and methods of Feminist Theology. The opening sentence of the title Deconstructing Amelia was inspired by the song of the same name, composed by Pitty and Martin (2008). Many women who have suffered domestic violence go through this process of deconstructing their Amelias interiors, then to rise again as free women, selfconfident, independent, strong and empowered in all her femininity to be just women, without any label or stereotype. To account for the proposed theme for this dissertation was made a bibliographical research and social research. In terms of methodology, the research can be defined as an action research of a qualitative nature, approved by the Ethics Committee of the Colleges EST, as required by resolution 196/96 of the National Health Council. Its main objective was to investigate how Music Therapy and Feminist Theology can reframe the emotional damage resulting from domestic violence. Specifically, we sought to investigate the extent to which funds Music Therapy are effective to minimize or cure depression and anxiety states of women in situations of domestic violence, as well as investigate the extent to which Music Therapy can be applied to raise self-esteem and fostering the autonomy and re-socialization of the target population of this research. Finally, we sought to understand the religious discourse and its relation to the behavior of women who experienced domestic violence. It was found that Music Therapy can be an effective tool to treat the emotional damage in women due to domestic violence. The particularity of music as nonverbal language assists a lot in the process, because the trauma in an unconscious way. However, to make use of Music Therapy as a tool for emotional rehabilitation of women who have experienced domestic violence, you should always be with a look directed to gender issues, making it a Music Therapy with feminist perspectives. At this point, Feminist Theology contributed solidly. It was also concluded that participants who receive spiritual advice obtained only negative or omission of his Church, had worse outcomes than participants who received support from their spiritual leaders or just did not look for any Church.

Salvagni, Edila Pizzato January 2005 (has links)
Aims: Develop and validate an instrument to assist the paediatrician in determining the probability of the occurrence of sexual abuse in children. Methods: Case-control study with 201 children that attended the paediatric out-patient services and the referral facilities for victims of sexual abuse, between March and November 2004: case group (suspicion or disclosure of sexual abuse) and control group (without suspicion or disclosure of sexual abuse). The responsible adults were invited to answer a questionnaire containing 18 items and five answer options, in accordance with the Likert scale, that dealt with the behavioural, physical and emotional symptoms presented by the children. Nine children that lacked sphincter control and one item that was answered by few people were excluded. The validity and internal consistency of the items were assessed by obtaining the correlation coefficients with the (Pearson, Spearman and Goodman-Kruskal), Cronbach’s α coefficient and the calculation of the area of the ROC (Receiver Operator Characteristics) curve. Later, the Likelihood Ratio (LR) and the positive predictive values (PPVs) for the five items in the questionnaire that presented the best performance were calculated. Results: A questionnaire was obtained, composed of the five items that best discriminated children with or without sexual abuse in two contexts. Each child received a score consisting of the sum of the responses with weights from 0 to 4 (range from 0 to 20) that, through the Bayes theorem (LR), indicated his/her post-test probability (PPV) of sexual abuse. Conclusions: The proposed instrument is useful as it is easily applied, is of assistance to the paediatrician in the identification of child victims of sexual abuse. It will give, according to the score obtained, the probability (PPV) of sexual abuse, and so offer guidance in the care of the child.

To understand this violence which makes victims in all social strata, it was necessary to investigate how ideas and feelings relating to domestic violence against women emerge in the speech of its direct victims. Based on the theoretical framework of the Metaphor-led Discourse Analysis (CAMERON, 2003, 2007a, 02007b, 2008; CAMERON; DEIGNAN, 2009; CAMERON et al, 2009; and CAMERON; MASLEN, 2010), this study is based, according to Cameron (CAMERON; MASLEN, 2010), on the understanding that metaphor is local and emerges in the discourse; has several dimensions to consider (linguistic, embodied, cognitive, affective, sociocultural and dynamic); and may, as a research tool, reveal what people who use it feel and think (CAMERON; MASLEN, 2010). Also according to Cameron (2007b), metaphors in language use result from a temporary stability of the trading concepts that are established among participants in a discursive event. Descriptive and exploratory, this qualitative research has a corpus composed of transcripts of the speech produced by six women about the domestic violence they have suffered, in a two-hour discursive event of a focus group which was recorded in digital audio. In order to collect data, along with the focus group technique, those of direct documentation were used. After transcription and proofreading procedures in accordance with the methodology adopted, the legitimated collected data were uploaded into the software Atlas.ti so as to complete the remaining steps of data preparation. With the data obtained at the end of these methodological procedures, it was possible to develop both the qualitative analysis of the speech of the participants and the quantitative survey related to recurrence of identified metaphorical vehicles. The results indicate the emergence of the following systematic metaphors, among others, in the speech of women direct victims of domestic violence when expressing their ideas and feelings about such phenomenon: CHANGING IS BEING A NEW PERSON; CHANGING IS GETTING OUT OF SOMEWHERE; GOVERNMENT ACTIONS AGAINST DOMESTIC VIOLENCE ARE SLOW MOVEMENTS, BEING SAFE IN THE HOUSE SHELTER IS BEING IMPRISONED, and TAKING AN ATTITUDE IS PUTTING AN END TO SOMETHING. These results suggest that, by means of the emergence of systematic metaphors, figurativity plays an important role in the expression of what direct victims think and feel about domestic violence against women. Data also indicate that systematic metaphors present metaphorical vehicles that are subject to metaphorical changes of three different kinds: re-employment , development (repetition, explanation and relexicalization) and literalization, among which the most frequent ones are those of development.

This study analyzes the interdisciplinary action in the school as a way for intervene in questions related to domestic violence. It aims the understanding of what the school environment represents as a space where it is also possible comprehend this phenomenon of domestic and sexual violence against children and teenagers, emphasizing this phenomenon as a public issue. This research is based in a qualitative approach. The method privileged the dialogue and the participating observation. This research has taken 16 months long of working in a school community that concentrates around an elementary public school from the city of Maceió. It aims to contribute to the scholar curriculum. It proposes going beyond the border of the traditional curriculum, pedagogical principles and epistemology. The interdisciplinary approach we propose can possibly correct some mistakes committed by a divided science, that is the product of a capitalist society. We believe that the interdisciplinary action in the school environment makes possible listening to children, once they are encouraged to speak. Thus it will be possible recognize their pain and stimulate them to say no to situations of violence, in a process of recognizing their rights and rebuilding their self-esteem. This will only be possible if the distance between educators and students get shorten through pedagogical activities that motivate the construction of more spontaneous expressions of the students thoughts and feelings free of typical/pattern models. We intend to contribute to a current problem that affect millions of children and teenagers all around the world, studying a very specific space in the state of Alagoas, trying to catch complex elements from the social, economic and political contexts that are responsible for the silence on this question.

La relation entre vie familiale et vie professionnelle : incidences des violences conjugales sur les travailleuses, les travailleurs et les organisations / Relationship between family life and professional life : impacts of domestic violence upon women workers, men workers and organisations

Wielhorski, Nouchka 25 November 2014 (has links)
Domestic violence affects the health of individuals, influences their behaviour in the workplace, and impacts organisations. In addition to financial loss, it contributes to emphasize gender inequalities, especially within the professional sphere. Througha typology of the implications of domestic violence, this exploratory research examines the processes in motion during the interactions of victims with their professional environment, and how organisations can respond to the manifestations of this phenomenon which occurs within the family sphere. It is based on a double conceptual framework: domestic violence and work-family articulation. Field access relies on a combination of qualitative methods: 47 interviews (semi-directive individual and collective interviews, life histories) lead with victims as well as with representatives of non-mercantile organisations (associations, Kering Foundation, conseil général de l’Essonne) and businesses (PSA Peugeot-Citroën, BPI group).Besides this innovative theoretical anchoring, the results have allowed the emergence of a model that articulates the family determinant (acts of physical, psychological, and economic violence), the work-family relationship (spill over, conflict, and compensation) as well as the three main organisational effects (decrease in concentration, change in behaviour, and over investment in work). Amongst those three manifestations, the decrease in concentration (negative spill over) and the over investment in work (compensation) are significant elements in terms of the number of people concerned; the change in behaviour (negative spill over) represents a remarkable variable because of its unexplored character. Following logics of integration or respect, the organisations are likely to contribute to reducing the difficulties posed by these interferences, thus receiving economic and managerial benefits. The contributions of the study are found on several levels: on one hand it imports into France the issue of the organisational implications of domestic violence, and on the other, it positions it within the theoretical framework of the work-family relationship.
