Vliv výrobních nepřesností na vznik přídavných momentů na kormidle jachty / Manufacturing inaccuracies influence on an appearence of the additional moment on a sailboat rudderKazda, Adam January 2016 (has links)
This Master’s thesis is dedicated to a generation of an additional torque, which can occur due to the inaccuracy of the manufacturing. This issue is inspired by a real case from 2013. In this work CFD modeling is used to investigate three different sources of the additional torque: misalignment of the rudder, deviation of the propeller shaft and asymmetry of the rudder. A simplified 2D simulation is done for all three cases. This simulation is more suitable for a jet powered boat. Therefore the asymmetry of the rudder is investigated also in a 3D case, where the rotational component of the flow behind the propeller is included.

National Symbol or Brand?: Tracing the Drag Queen in Media and CommunitiesJanuary 2020 (has links)
abstract: This dissertation project examines the cultural labor of the drag queen in the United States (US). I explore how the drag queen can be understood as a heuristic to understand the stakes and limits of belonging and exceptionalism. Inclusion in our social and national belonging in the US allows for legibility and safety, however, when exceptional or token figures become the path towards achieving belonging, it can leave out those who are unable to conform, which are often the most vulnerable folks. I argue that attending to the drag queen’s trajectory, we can trace the ways that multiply-marginalized bodies navigate attempts to include, subsume, and erase their existence by the nation-state while simultaneously celebrating and consuming them in the realm of media and consumer culture. In the first chapter I introduce the project, the context and the stakes involved. Chapter two examines representations of drag queens in films to unpack how these representations have layered over time for American audiences, and positions these films as necessary building blocks for queer semiosis for viewers to return to and engage with. Chapter three analyzes RuPaul and RuPaul’s Drag Race to outline RuPaul labor as an exceptional subject, focusing on his investment in homonormative politics and labor supporting homonationalist projects. Chapter four centers questions of trans* identity and race, specifically Blackness to analyze how Drag Race renders certain bodies and performances legitimate and legible, constructing proper drag citizens. Chapter five utilizes ethnographic methods to center local drag communities, focusing on The Rock and drag performers in Phoenix, Arizona to analyze how performers navigate shifting media discourses of drag and construct a queer performance space all their own. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Gender Studies 2020

Effect of Incorporating Aerodynamic Drag Model on Trajectory Tracking Performance of DJI F330 QuadcopterJanuary 2020 (has links)
abstract: Control algorithm development for quadrotor is usually based solely on rigid body dynamics neglecting aerodynamics. Recent work has demonstrated that such a model is suited only when operating at or near hover conditions and low-speed flight. When operating in confined spaces or during aggressive maneuvers destabilizing forces and moments are induced due to aerodynamic effects. Studies indicate that blade flapping, induced drag, and propeller drag influence forward flight performance while other effects like vortex ring state, ground effect affect vertical flight performance. In this thesis, an offboard data-driven approach is used to derive models for parasitic (bare-airframe) drag and propeller drag. Moreover, thrust and torque coefficients are identified from static bench tests. Among the two, parasitic drag is compensated for in the position controller module in the PX4 firmware. 2-D circular, straight line, and minimum snap rectangular trajectories with corridor constraints are tested exploiting differential flatness property wherein altitude and yaw angle are constant. Flight tests are conducted at ASU Drone Studio and results of tracking performance with default controller and with drag compensated position controller are presented. Root mean squared tracking error in individual axes is used as a metric to evaluate the model performance. Results indicate that, for circular trajectory, the root mean squared error in the x-axis has reduced by 44.54% and in the y-axis by 39.47%. Compensation in turn degrades the tracking in both axis by a maximum under 12% when compared to the default controller for rectangular trajectory case. The x-axis tracking error for the straight-line case has improved by 44.96% with almost no observable change in the y-axis. / Dissertation/Thesis / Real-time Flight Test of Circular Trajectories / Masters Thesis Aerospace Engineering 2020

Examining the Comparative Measurement Value of Technology-Enhanced Items:Moncaleano, Sebastian January 2021 (has links)
Thesis advisor: Michael Russell / The growth of computer-based testing over the last two decades has motivated the creation of innovative item formats. It is often argued that technology-enhanced items (TEIs) provide better measurement of test-takers’ knowledge, skills, and abilities by increasing the authenticity of tasks presented to test-takers (Sireci & Zenisky, 2006). Despite the popularity of TEIs in operational assessments, there remains little psychometric research on these innovative item formats. Claims regarding their potential to provide better measurement are seldomly explored. This dissertation adds to this limited body of research by developing theory and proposing a methodology to compare TEIs to traditional item formats.
This study investigated how to judge the comparative measurement value (CMV) of two drag-and-drop technology-enhanced formats (classification and rank-ordering) relative to stem-equivalent multiple-choice items. Items were administered to a sample of adults and results were calibrated using a 2-parameter logistic IRT model. Moreover, the utility of the TEIs was evaluated according to the TEI Utility Framework (Russell, 2016). Four indicators were identified as the most valuable characteristics to judge CMV and then combined into a hierarchical decision protocol. When applied, this protocol provides a CMV judgment and a recommendation of the preferred item format. Applying the protocol to the items revealed that most TEIs examined in this study showed decreased CMV, indicating that in a real-life scenario the multiple-choice format would be favored for most of these item pairs. Recommendations for the use of the CMV protocol and directions of future related research are discussed. / Thesis (PhD) — Boston College, 2021. / Submitted to: Boston College. Translational and rotational diffusion of micrometer-sized solid domains in lipid membranesPetrov, Eugene P., Petrosyan, Rafayel, Schwille, Petra January 2012 (has links)
We use simultaneous observation of translational and rotational Brownian motion of domains in lipid membranes to test the hydrodynamics-based theory for the viscous drag on the membrane inclusion. We find that translational and rotational diffusion coefficients of micrometer-sized solid (gel-phase) domains in giant unilamellar vesicles showing fluid–gel phase coexistence are in excellent agreement with the theoretical predictions.

Effects of Perturbations on the Orbital and Attitude Motion of Drag SailsJuan Camilo Maldonado (10988202) 23 July 2021 (has links)
<div>With the increasing frequency of satellite launches and proposed constellations for Earth observation and communications, the number of objects in orbit is expected to increase significantly in the coming decades. This trend brings to question the current orbital debris problem, which will continue to worsen if proper deorbit guidelines are not met for future satellites. Currently, the primary system that is utilized for deorbiting is a propulsion system that performs a maneuver at the end of mission and delivers the satellite on an orbit that satisfies deorbit guidelines. However, this method suffers from reliability concerns since it requires that the host spacecraft be operational to perform the maneuver and it also significantly increases the cost and complexity of the satellite if a propulsion system is not already being used for the mission. These issues with complexity, cost, and robustness could potentially be solved by a different class of deorbiting system, a drag sail.</div><div><br></div><div>In this thesis, the effects of perturbations on the orbital and attitude motion of drag sails are analyzed in order to extend the current understanding of drag sails as a deorbiting system. The perturbations considered in the orbit-attitude propagator are aerodynamic drag, solar radiation pressure, Earth oblateness effects, and gravity gradient torques. Different drag sail types, sail materials, deployment epochs, and deployment locations in Earth orbit are also considered in order to extend the analysis to different types of missions and to understand how these parameters influence the effects of the perturbations. Additionally, a self-shadowing algorithm and efficient implementation approach is developed in order to improve the fidelity of the aerodynamic drag and solar radiation pressure perturbations.</div>
