“WELL, DON’T WALK AROUND NAKED... UNLESS YOU’RE A GIRL”: GENDER, SEXUALITY, AND RISK IN JAMTRONICA FESTIVAL SUBCULTURAL SCENES

Motl, Kaitlyne A. 01 January 2018 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to explore emerging issues surrounding gendered fear, threat, and violence perpetration at music festivals – particularly events that feature a synthesis of jam band and electronic dance music acts – a genre termed jamtronica by its fans. Though gendered violence perpetration and prevention have been widely studied within other party-oriented settings (i.e., sexual violence perpetration on college campuses), very little research exists to address how wider disparities of gender and sexuality permeate a community whose members frequently claim the scene’s immunity from external inequalities. In this three-year multi-sited ethnography, I incorporate participant observations, group and individual interviews, and textual analyses to progressively layer investigations into: 1) festival-goers’ gender-bifurcated perceptions of the problems they face within the event arena; 2) how institutional and interactional inequalities fuel gender-sexual expectations that exacerbate the risks with which festival-going women’s contend; and, 3) how jamtronica’s “libertarian and libertine” codes complicate women’s negotiations of (sub)cultural agency, expression, and safety. Findings derived across fourteen sites, interviews with 179 festival participants, and countless material texts suggest that men and women do perceive festival “problems” in very different ways – subsequently leading women to calculatedly navigate festival terrains, interactions, and self-presentations in ways that festival-going men seldom must. Protected by scene norms that paradoxically elevate personal autonomy and group integration, festival-going men’s homosocial displays of masculinity (through pranks, drinking and drug use, and even sexual predation) often goes unchallenged – or, is seemingly even encouraged. In an environment that both scholars and study participants claim to eclipse mainstream inequalities of gender and sexuality, a closer look reveals the multiplex ways that festival-going women risk their physical, social, and sexual well-beings in order to pursue the emancipatory promises that jamtronica music festival community discourses purport. For this understudied, yet rapidly growing, subcultural scene, this study offers conceptual and analytical foundations to event-specific violence prevention programming, as well as gender and sexuality-centric initiatives paramount to ever-diversifying jamtronica music festival communities.

Optimisation d’un procédé d’usinage par microélectroérosion / Optimization of micro electrical discharge machining

Dahmani, Rabah 06 May 2015 (has links)
This work aims at studying Micro Electrical Discharge Milling (μEDM milling), which is a non-contact process allowing machining all hard and electrically conductive materials with a cylindrical ultrathin tool. The principle is based on the creation of electrical micro discharges between the tool and an electrically conductive part immersed in a liquid dielectric. By means of a 3D path, the tool machines a complex shape in the part with high aspect ratio details. In this work, we have firstly improved a process for making cylindrical ultrathin micro-tools by electrochemical etching of tungsten rods. Tools with a diameter of 32.6 ± 0.3 μm and a length of 3 mm have been obtained with an automated and reproducible process. Standard deviation has been divided by 2 by comparison with the previous state of the art. Tools with diameter as low as 3 μm have been fabricated with the help of the machine operator Then these micro-tools have been used for machining parts with the μEDM milling process. To do so, a second generation machine has been entirely developed on the basis of previous work. It has been possible to machine stainless steel in deionized water with 3 μm micro-tools without damaging the tools. In other respects, the μEDM milling process has been characterized in terms of machining resolution, material removal rate and tool wear. An innovative generator of discharges allow machining with 1 to 10 nJ / spark with a reduced tool wear by comparison to the state of the art. An innovative process for the on line characterization of discharges with spatial distribution capability has been developed

The optimal Distributed Generation (DG) allocation problem consists in choosing the best locations of those distributed power plants at the distribution system, and to define its amount of power injection. The approach can be either single or multiobjective. The main objectives are: minimization of total power loss, voltage profile improvement, operational cost minimization, maximization of distributed generation capacity, environmental gains, among others. In this work, the main goal pursued is the total power loss minimization of the distribution system, keeping the buses voltages within the predetermined limits. To achieve this goal, an optimization methodology is proposed. This approach treats separately the location problem and the power dispatched by the generation units. The busbars connected to distributed generation are determined through a new metaheuristic algorithm, implemented in MATLAB, named Empirical Discrete Metaheuristic (EDM). The amount of power injection is solved by an Optimum Power Flow implemented in the commercial software LINGO, or by the Steepest Descent Method in the MATLAB environment. The first strategy to determine the DG dispatch is used on simulations with single phase equivalents systems. The second one is employed in the amount of power determination in unbalanced three phase systems, which the power flow is carried out by the open source software OpenDSS. The three single phase equivalent test systems analyzed are composed by 33, 69 and 476 buses, while the two systems with three phases have 34 and 123 buses, each. To evaluate the proposed methodology quality, comparisons to published works in the specialized literature are made. Also, robustness tests and comparisons to other well succeed metaheuristics are carried out. The results were obtained from simulations with three and four DG units in electric power distribution systems. These results consistently show that the proposed methodology is efficient, providing DGs configurations that significantly reduces the active power losses and keep the voltages at adequate levels.

Développement d’un procédé d’usinage par micro-électroérosion / Development of a machining processby EDM

Girardin, Guillaume 20 December 2012 (has links)
Electro Discharge Machining (EDM) is a non-contact technique allowing machining of electricallyconductive materials; it is well adapted for the machining of hard materials. The principle is based onthe creation of eroding electrical discharges between a tool and a piece, both immersed in adielectric. In this thesis, we have the studied miniaturization of the process, called micro electrodischarge machining (μ-EDM), which is considered as a complementary technique of mechanical orlaser micro-machining techniques and silicon micro technology processes (RIE, DRIE, LIGA)..However, the resolution of μEDM is limited. In this work, we have firstly developed an original method for making tungsten micro-tools withcylindrical profile by electrochemical etching. This method allows the reproducible fabrication ofmicro-tool with 15-μm diameter. Thinner micro-tools were also obtained (down to 700 nm) withreproducibility problems. Furthermore, a prototype machine for milling μ-EDM was developed with afully characterized electronics. Micro channels were obtained respectively in stainless steel with awidth of 40μm and in titanium with a width of 25μm; a surface roughness Ra of 86 nm was achievedin 600 x 600 x 30 μm cavities. Besides, the limitations of the apparatus were highlighted. In the lastpart of this work, we have studied the micro-discharge and the micro-plasma between the micro-tooland the part with electrical characterization. The resistivity and the inductance of the sparks weremeasured and integrated in a numerical model in order to explain the duration of the microdischarges and their intensity. Solutions for improving the machining resolution are also discussed atthe end of this work.

An investigation of the relationship between online activity on Studi.se and academic grades of newly arrived immigrant students : An application of educational data mining

Menon, Akash, Islam, Nahida January 2017 (has links)
This study attempts to analyze the impact of an online educational resource on academic performances among newly arrived immigrant students in Sweden between the grade six to nine in the Swedish school system. The study focuses on the web based educational resource called Studi.se made by Komplementskolan AB.The aim of the study was to investigate the relationship between academic performance and using Studi.se. Another purpose was to see what other factors that can impact academic performances. The study made use of the data mining process, Cross Industry Standard for Data Mining (CRISP-DM), to understand and prepare the data and then create a regression model that is evaluated. The regression model tries predict the dependent variable of grade based on the independent variables of Studi.se activity, gender and years in Swedish schools. The used data set includes the grades in mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology and religion of newly arrived students in Sweden from six municipalities that have access to Studi.se. The data used also includes metrics of the student’s activity on Studi.se.The results show negative correlation between grade and gender of the student across all subjects. In this report, the negative correlation means that female students perform better than male students. Furthermore, there was a positive correlation between number of years a student has been in the same school and their academic grade. The study could not conclude a statistically significant relationship between the activity on Studi.se and the students’ academic grade.Additional explanatory independent variables are needed to make a predictive model as well as investigating alternative regression models other than multiple linear regression. In the sample, a majority of the students have little or no activity on Studi.se despite having free access to the resource through the municipality.

Windowlicker

Röthig, Sabine 11 May 2016 (has links)
This thesis explores the relationship between Electronic Dance Music (EDM) which originated in clubs, and the mass media consolidated music video. Focussing on how EDM influences the music video, an aesthetic paradigm shift on the latter is discussed. This change stemmed mainly from the structure of the instrumental, modular EDM track, which is significantly different from the structure of the song. Originally, the music video was intended as way of visualising the performance of the artist on the monitor; however, the advent of instrumental EDM tracks posed critical problems for this approach, and arguably renders it obsolete. New strategies of illustrations are required. Parts I and II of this thesis analyse music video and EDM through scientific discourses in an attempt to define their respective aesthetic attributes. In part III the relationship between tracks and images in club visuals is discussed in order to illustrate the singularity of this dialogue. In part IV, conclusions from the foregoing sections are evaluated and applied to a study of “Windowlicker” by British artist Aphex Twin, the video to which was directed by Chris Cunningham in 1999. The purpose of this thesis is to extend the aesthetic studies of the music video to clarify its status as an essential part of popular music in monitor culture. As an artistic genre it has to be taken seriously because it can display contemporary avant-gardes.

UCN Detector development for the TRIUMF Neutron EDM experiment

Fleurette, Doresty Fonseca 07 April 2016 (has links)
A new measurement of the neutron electric dipole moment (nEDM) is being developed at TRIUMF, where a high density source of ultra cold neutrons (UCN) is currently under construction. A fast, high-efficiency UCN detector is needed for the experiment, and a 6-Li doped glass scintillation detector is being explored for this purpose. In this work, simulations and test measurements were carried out to optimize the light guide design for the new UCN detector. Acrylic and air-core light guides, the latter with two different reflecting surfaces, were considered. Three prototype light guides were constructed and tested, and results were compared with simulations. The best solution was found to be an acrylic guide, wrapped with mylar foil. For a guide 12 cm in length as required by the experimental layout, a lower limit of approximately 25 photoelectrons per neutron capture was established for the proposed geometry and photomultiplier configuration. / May 2016

This paper describes a model-driven approach to create dynamically and manage these GUIs. In this approach, the Software Engineer designs conceptual models of the information system using object-oriented meta-models. A set of predefined mapping rules is applied to automatically transform and refine the conceptual models in order to generate, in runtime, the look and feel of the GUI, without source code creation. This improves the software usability, assuring consistency and homogeneity of the GUI, increases the productivity of the software engineering staff and simplifies maintenance. In our experiments we have observed an average productivity fifteen times higher than traditional methods of GUI development.
