A Study of the Relationships Between Knowledge and Attitudes Toward Computer Ethics Among Computer Users in the Tennessee Community College System

Yuan, Qing . 01 December 1998 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to obtain information about the knowledge and attitudes of students, staff, faculty, and administrators in the community colleges in the Tennessee Board of Regents (TBR) system about the ethical issues relating to the current policies and laws regarding the use of computers and software; to compare the knowledge and attitude of these users and to investigate any relationships that may exist between users, knowledge and attitude toward computer ethics. A total of 700 students (280), staff (140), faculty (140), and administrators (140) from the 14 TBR community colleges were surveyed. The total responses was 389 (55.57%) which included 161 students (57.5%), 76 staff (54.29%), 81 faculty (57.86%), and 71 administrators (50.71%). Fifteen hypotheses generated from 6 research questions were tested using Kruskal-Wallis test, Mann-Whitney U test, t -test and Spearman's rho. This study showed that administrators possessed the most knowledge about computer ethics, followed by faculty and staff. Students were shown to know the least about policies and issues concerning computer ethics. Age did not have any impact on the knowledge of computer users but affected the attitudes of students. No differences were found in the knowledge or attitudes toward computer ethics between gender groups. The frequency of computer usage did not affect the knowledge of computer users while it had influence on the students, attitudes toward computer ethics. Training on computer ethics positively affected the computer users, knowledge about computer ethics. For staff, faculty, and administrators, training on computer usage generally did not affect their knowledge and awareness of computer ethics nor did the frequency of computer usage, age, or gender. However, these factors affected the knowledge of student group. Research results showed a correlation between the knowledge and attitudes toward computer ethics for faculty and administrators in general. There tended to be a positive correlation between the knowledge and attitudes toward computer ethics for faculty and administrators who used computer daily and of age 40 or older. It indicated that the more awareness of computer ethics, the more they favor of tighter control of computer use.

Avila, Bárbara Gorziza January 2011 (has links)
This research contemplated the development of a high-technology-based alternative communication system, aimed for the communication on orality-impaired autistic children. The building process of “Sistema de Comunicação Alternativa para o Letramento de Pessoas com Autismo” (Alternative Communication System for People with Autism), SCALA, unfolded along three stages, running from its construction to the evaluation among potential users of the tool. In the work`s first stage the system requisites were established and also SCALA`s first model and interfaces proposals were made. Meanwhile, a case-study was conducted with an orality-impaired child with an autism diagnosis. In this stage, Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) was introduced among the child`s activities, starting with low-technology resources, and finally reaching high-technology and the use of SCALA on communication development related pedagogical activities. AAC strategies, created along the study, based on alternative communication resources the SCALA system usage, allowed the identification of the system`s potentialities on developing oral communication on a children with autism. In the last stage, SCALA`s usability was accessed following heuristics defined by Nielsen and adapted by Rauber. To the usability verification, a set of ten tasks was devised. The tasks were analyzed with two methods: inspection and test. The inspection method was conducted by the author herself, while the tests were made with four special education professionals who had been working in Resource Rooms with children with orality deficits using AAC resources.

Bärwaldt, Regina January 2008 (has links)
This research approaches the use and the appropriation of the Information and Communication Technologies (ICT’s) by the blind people through synchronic social interaction tool with accessible audio in an AVA, implemented according to the patterns of W3C/WAI accessibility. In this process are taking part blind people and sighted people, teachers from the PROINESP course of Special Education General Office of Ministry of Education (SEESP/MEC) in parallel with the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), through Nucleus of Information Technology in Special Education (NIEE) and Inter-discipline Center of New Technologies in Education (CINTED). The problem of research verified how a conversation tool of audio resources, coherent to the principles of accessibility, inserted in an AVA context, supports the interaction of blind people focusing on digital, social and educational inclusion in distance learning. Among the objectives there were to develop and validate the tool with accessible audio resources, as well as the structure of the integrated tool in an AVA’s and, consequently, the analysis of the process of interaction between the blind and sighted people through the EVOC tool. For the analysis, it was established categories focuses mainly in the social interaction, on the basis of socio-historical theory, that was the master line of this process. From the analysis realized of the interactive process of the people in this research, we concluded that they used the EVOC tool in the fulfillment of the course and interacted themselves and with sighted people. In this way, the study presents sign that the tool supports the process of interaction and inclusion of blind people in an AVA context, through qualification in distance learning.
