An activity based method for sustainable manufacturing modeling and assessments in SysMLRomaniw, Yuriy 06 July 2010 (has links)
Traditionally, environmental impacts of man made products have been determined by performing a life cycle assessment (LCA) on the product. As the name implies, LCA is usually covers the entire life of the product in a so-called "cradle-to-grave" assessment. In determining environmental impacts over the whole product life, LCA's are reasonably adequate. However, in providing detailed impacts on a particular phase of life, LCA's are lacking. Detailed assessments are important because very few stakeholders have influence over a product during all phases of life. Stakeholders need detailed impact assessments in their particular phase of life. More detailed assessments give stakeholders more information that can be used for better environmental management (EM) and more environmentally benign operations. In many LCA's, the manufacturing phase of life has been over-generalized and over-simplified because of its relatively small environmental impact, as compared to other phases of life. Nevertheless, certain stakeholders, such as manufacturing companies, need detailed impact information for the manufacturing phase of life so that they can create a more sustainable manufacturing process. Most traditional LCA's use a case-based approach, which was deemed to be inadequate. For these LCA's, the information provided for each case is often quite detailed and specific. However, this makes the assessment less flexible, limiting the quality of the assessment to the degree that the current scenario matches the existing cases. In order to make a more user-specific assessment, a model-based approach was used. To give the model flexibility, a parametric model was created based on mathematical equations that represent various parts of the manufacturing process. To give the model structure, an activity-based costing (ABC) approach was used. Using the ABC structure, the manufacturing process was broken down into activities, each of which was characterized by mathematical models. Large models would be difficult to construct and simulate by hand, so a model was built with the aid of a computer. The modeling language SysML (Systems Modeling Language) was used to create an object-oriented model of the manufacturing process, using the ABC structure. SysML defines overall properties and behaviors of the various elements in the model, while the plug-in tool ParaMagic was used to execute the model via a Mathematica Solver. The model computes carbon dioxide emissions, energy consumption, and waste mass generation for a particular manufacturing scenario. The goal of the model was to quantify environmental impact factors in order to aid manufacturing stakeholders in EM. The overall goal of the research was to determine whether an activity-based, object-oriented model was a valid approach, and whether the computer-aided tools adequately implemented this approach. Findings show that SysML is capable of modeling large and complex systems. However, due to some limitations of Paramagic, only some of SysML's capabilities were utilized. Nevertheless, Paramagic is capable of extracting information out of a manufacturing model built in SysML, and solving parametric relations in Mathematica in a timely manner. Timely solutions of complex models are critical for stakeholders keeping a competitive edge.

Employees thoughts on environmental practices : Influence, prerequisites, barriers and a novel work method.Lundström, Petter January 2013 (has links)

An investigation into total volatile organic compound exposure levels in homes and classrooms of asthmatic children in selected sites in Durban.Maharaj, Santosh Kumar. January 2008 (has links)
Indoor air quality has become an important health concern due to the number of indoor pollutants and the realization that even minimal exposures to volatile organic compounds may produce direct or indirect adverse health outcomes. Young people are most vulnerable to these poisonous chemicals as they spend much of their times indoors at homes, schools, nurseries and in day care centers. Exposure to volatile organic compounds indoors has been related to asthma and other respiratory symptoms. The adverse effects of air pollution on respiratory health in South Durban have been described in a number of studies. In 2000, a study in the South Durban Basin at Settlers Primary School demonstrated both a high prevalence of respiratory diseases amongst schoolchildren as well as an association between ambient air pollutants and other adverse health outcomes. The South Durban Health Study subsequently undertook a health risk assessment and an epidemiological study investigating this association further on behalf of the eThekwini Municipality. The study highlighted that relatively moderate ambient concentration of N02, NO, PMIO and S02 were strongly and significantly associated with a reduction in lung function among children with persistent asthma. Moreover, attending primary school in South Durban was significantly associated with increased risk from persistent asthma when compared to schools in North Durban. METHODS The descriptive study measured the total volatile organic compound levels within selected homes and schools of asthmatic children in South and North Durban. Recommendations for reducing or mitigating indoor total volatile organic compound exposures were made. The study involved a secondary analysis of data obtained from the South Durban Health Study. The monitoring for total volatile organic compounds within homes and classrooms was undertaken using passive samplers during a 72-hour period and analyzed using a gaschromatography/ mass spectrometry method. Temperature and humidity was assessed using temperature and humidity sensors. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS version 13. The dataset comprised 140 total volatile organic compound samples from homes and 14 from classrooms. Total volatile organic compounds were measured in microgram per cubic meter (g/m3), temperature in degrees Celsius and relative humidity in percentage of moisture. RESULTS Total volatile organic compounds with levels in households ranging from 17g/m3 to 1440g/m3 and in classrooms ranging from 48g/m3 to 5292g/m3 were measured. The mean levels detected were significantly different in homes and classrooms / Thesis (MMed.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban, 2008.

Natural ventilation, dampness and mouldiness in dwellings in the Waterloo housing development (Durban Metropolitan Area) : a case study of indoor air quality.Gansan, Jaisendra. January 2004 (has links)
Dampness can cause the development of moulds in buildings and pose a threat to the quality of the building structure, indoor air quality and health of the occupants. An emerging source of housing related problems are the building materials commonly used in housing construction, which can influence respiratory health. There is concern regarding the quality of the housing stock in the Durban Metropolitan area with regard to dampness and its the potential impact on the health of occupants. To elucidate this issue, a study was conducted to assess natural ventilation, dampness and mouldiness in dwellings of the Waterloo Housing development (Durban Metropolitan Area), between February 2001 and December 2003.
A total of 491 randomly selected homes were visually inspected and residents were surveyed by means of a structured questionnaire. Three hundred and eighteen (318) air and surface mould samples were collected in duplicate, totalling 636 samples and analysed in the laboratory. Building characteristics and physical conditions were recorded and noted. Temperature and relative humidity readings were also taken during
the survey. After the analysis of the 491 questionnaires, physical conditions of the dwellings were found to be poor and of concern. With the number (1178) and size of habitable rooms in the dwellings; the occupancy of 2414 people with an average of 2.05 persons per room, indicated overcrowding and congestion. About 51% (n=249) of the dwellings surveyed were found to be experiencing dampness (>3m2) and 47% (n=230) had visible surface moulds, primarily on the walls (at least an average of 1m2) .
Predominant airborne fungal organism identified included; Aspergillus (23%-indoors, 26outdoors), Cladosporium (47%- indoors, 51%-outdoors), Penicillum (27%-indoors, 26%-outdoors) spp. Natural ventilation was also inadequate in 261 (53%) dwellings, which did not have airbricks. This inadequacy significantly promotes the occurrence of dampness and surface moulds (p < 0.05). With poor ventilation, dampness and mould growth in the dwellings, there was a high number of cases with upper respiratory tract health complaints; like Cough - 25% (n=122), Sinuses - 25% (n=121), flu symptoms 23% (n=llO) lower respiratory infections such as asthma - 27% (n=130), and chest infections - 23% (n=113). Asthma, wheeze, runny nose and allergy to dust were statistically associated with dampness (p < 0.05), mouldiness (p < 0.03) and lack of ventilation (p < 0.01).
Buildings separate their occupants from hostile external environments and create a better internal environment for them, therefore dwellings must be constructed in a manner that promotes the health and well being of the occupants. In terms of guiding regulations, there were several omissions and non-compliance with existing local building bye-laws in the construction of houses, leading to adverse implications. Improved workmanship,
appropriate material selection and compliance with the relevant guidelines during planning and construction inter alia, are recommended when addressing housing issues, thereby promoting the interest, health and well-being of the users. / Thesis-(M.Med)- University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban, 2004.

Designing for Behavior Change: Identifying design components that encourage and empower individuals to act in environmentally responsible waysShirey, Jennifer 01 May 2011 (has links)
Many designers today are creating communication materials that encourage individuals to change their behavior related to environmental issues. The problem is that people are often unaware of existing research on effective methods for these communications. For example, environmental psychologists have studied best practices for creating persuasive communications for several decades.
During this yearlong master’s thesis project, I conducted my own research studies, exploring how the emotional tone and medium of a communication piece affect a person’s decision to change his or her behavior. My second goal was to connect designers to existing research in the fields of psychology, decision sciences, and persuasive technology.
In the end, I created a roadmap to behavior change: a compilation of research from my own studies and existing literature. The roadmap includes observations and practical tips people can use when designing for environmental issues, as well as a set of ethical principles that should be followed when designing for behavior change.
I believe that my work will help designers use communication to empower individuals with knowledge, encouraging them to begin and sustain a journey toward positive behavior change.

De la phytoextraction en Nouvelle-Calédonie aux Eco-Mn : étude structurale de catalyseurs biosourcés et innovants / From phytoextraction in New Caledonia to Eco-Mn : structural study of biosourced and innovative catalystsGarel, Claire 01 December 2017 (has links)
Mineral resources are running out, ores are hardly accessible, and ores processing damage the environment. In New-Caledonia, nickel ores mining requires to remove all the upper layers of the ground, leading to open-cast mines subjected to erosion, which threaten the environment and the biodiversity of the archipelago. Although mining ores exploitation is important for the economy of New-Caledonia, the ecological remediation of mining areas through the restoration of a vegetation cover, are necessary.ChimEco laboratory has demonstrated that it is possible to reintroduce pioneering endemic plant species, which are resistant to climate conditions and accumulate manganese, to restore New-Caledonian mining sites. These accumulating plants extract Mn from the ground to their aerial parts: it is called phytoextraction. Besides, ChimEco laboratory puts forward a new scientific and economic valorisation of phytoremediation efforts in New-Caledonia. Indeed, an innovative process has been developed to recycle metallic elements from manganese enriched biomass into innovative and polymetallic catalysts for organic synthesis. This new process is called Ecocatalysis. Ecocatalysts enriched in manganese, Eco-Mn, have demonstrated interesting and promising catalytic activities in several reactions.Regarding the good results achieved by ChimEco in ecology and in chemistry with accumulating plants and resulting Eco-Mn, it is necessary to better and precisely characterise Eco-Mn catalysts, by considering them as innovative materials, in order to understand and foresee their catalytic activity. This PhD work belongs within this context.Several analyses have been performed to characterise Eco-Mn catalysts. First, ICP-MS enables to identify metallic composition of Eco-Mn. Besides, XRD analyses highlight the presence of complex crystallized manganese salts, like K3NaMnCl6. Finally, X-ray absorption spectroscopy enables us to study the nature of manganese species which compose Eco-Mn catalysts, and to understand the oxidation states of Mn and Fe. Moreover, acid properties of Eco-Mn were demonstrated thanks to the study of a cyclic acetal rearrangement and infra-red spectroscopy of adsorbed pyridine. All these analyses were performed in order to determine first the composition of Eco-Mn catalysts, and secondly to highlight their physico-chemical properties, their oxidation state and their acid properties. Furthermore, this study also enable us to better understand the different steps of the ecocatalysts production process. Finally, synthetic catalysts were also produced and analysed in the same conditions as Eco-Mn, in order to bring out the specificities of Eco-Mn.

Ação civil pública e ajustamento de conduta em áreas de proteção aos mananciais na região metropolitana de São Paulo / Ação civil pública and ajustamento de conduta in the protected area of mananciais of the metropolitan region of São PauloRoberta Castilho Andrade Lopes 03 April 2009 (has links)
Due to the growth and subsequent consolidation of irregular ocupation of the protected area of mananciais, this study, named Ação Civil Pública and Ajustamento de Conduta in the protected area of mananciais of the metropolitan region of São Paulo is about the conflicts represented by the presence of urban settlements in the protected area of mananciais, and the judicial and urbanistic treatment that is being dispensed to these settlements. We chose to analyze settlements in the Protected Area of Mananciais located at the Municípios of São Bernardo do Campo, Santo André, Diadema e Mauá. These settlements were the object of Ação Civil Pública and Termo de Ajustamento de Conduta This analysis was contextualized by the characterization of the moment through which the modern society and the judicial system are passing, and also by important topics to the comprehension of the institutions studied here: the functioning of Judiciary the rise of the mass demands, the acting of the Ministério Público of the State of SãoPaulo and the Executive, the effectiveness of the Ação Civil Pública and the Ajustamento de Conduta for the tutela of the transindividual interests. We tried to comprehend the possibilities of interaction between the legal goal and the spacial uses. We analyzed the impacts in the environmental and social aspects of the cities caused by these two institutes which represent different attitudes before the application of law. While the Ação Civil Pública stablishes itself strictly in the terms of law, the Termo de Ajustamento de Conduta requires the agree and cooperation of the parties, the reduction of damages and the progressive accomplishment of the objectives of the law. The conclusions and considerations shall contribute not solely for the discussion on the necessity of development of the regulamentation of the protected area of mananciais, but also to for a better comprehension of the relations between society and environment, social reality and the Judiciary System.
