Essays in theory of the firm and indivisual decision making experiments

Ursino, Giovanni 28 October 2009 (has links)
This thesis is composed of two separate, unrelated chapters. Chapter I, coauthored with Greg Barron, is an experiment in individual decision making. It builds on a small and growing literature which makes the following point: whenever we learn the odds and outcomes of a binary choice problem through experience rather than from a visual description -a prospect- then we take decisions as if we were underweighting rare events. This is in contrast to the well known phenomenon of overweighting rare events in prospect based decisions. Our work contributes to the literature by strengthening this finding in the face of earlier criticism. In particular we find that the underweighting is robust to the elimination of sampling bias which affected previous studies and is absent from ours. We also find that underweighting in choice happens at the same time as overweighting in probability judgment. This remains unexplained. Chapter II introduces a new theory of vertical integration building on the fact that improving a company's bargaining position is often cited as a chief motivation to vertically integrate with suppliers. In my model firms integrate to gain bargaining power against other suppliers in the production process. The cost of integration is a loss of flexibility in choosing the most suitable suppliers for a particular final product. I show that the firms who make the most specific investments in the production process have the greatest incentive to integrate. The theory provides novel insights to the understanding of numerous stylized facts such as the effect of financial development on the vertical structure of firms, the observed pattern from FDI to outsourcing in international trade, the connection between product cycle and vertical structure, etc.

Enhancing students' personal resources through narrative

Rapmund, Valerie Joan 08 1900 (has links)
Text in English / The Student Self-Empowerment and Enrichment Programme (SSEEP), formed a resourceful context for this study, which was action-oriented and experience-based. The aim of the SSEEP was to disseminate knowledge, and to create a domain for dialogue that facilitated connection with others and created spaces for the telling and sharing of stories. The philosophy which informed this study was that individuals interpret their experiences and make sense thereof through narratives or stories, which are socially constructed through language. Qualitative research methods were used to interpret the data. Facilitators' and students' experiences in the SSEEP were recorded in field notes, and photographs and 'memory boxes', which were analysed using a hermeneutic method. Personal interviews with four students were analysed using narrative analysis. The purpose of this study was to identify the processes, themes and meanings that contribute to the enhancement of students' personal resources. Facilitators and/ or students co-constructed alternative stories to ones that thwarted their growth, or subjugated them, which led to the creation of new realities that individuals could 'perform', and to recreating themselves in new ways. They could not but be changed by the encounter, and moved from the anonymity of silence to the healing of affirmation through narrative. The promotion of healing, the provision of support or education, and improvement of self-understanding and personal efficacy, were goals that seemed to have been attained. It was also hoped that personal growth would bring life-enhancing contributions to other contexts as well, such as the students' personal, family and community contexts. The guidelines proposed in this study could be of value to those who wish to become involved at grassroots level in designing and implementing their own programmes in the tertiary-education context. They are particularly relevant within present day South Africa taking the diversity of the population into account. / Psychology / D. Litt. et Phil. (Psychology)

Prožitek na táborech / Experience at camps

ZICHA, Miroslav January 2017 (has links)
This thesis deals with the role of experiences at camps for children and youth and the possibilities of subsequent work with these experiences. The theoretical part describes and differentiates between the Czech terms prožitek, zážitek and zkušenost (experience). Special attention is given to the process of experience-based education and six basic experiential learning models are specified. Feedback and targeted feedback are also mentioned with special focus being given to facilitation, its rules and techniques. The thesis also informs about the connection between work with feedback and dramaturgy. Qualitative research finds out whether camp leaders work with the participants' experiences, clarifies the phenomena (not) leading to this fact, describes their experience with the form of processing the experiences and determines if they have some theoretical knowledge in this field.

Filozofování s dětmi jako způsob výchovy zážitkem ve volném čase / Doing Philosophy with Children as a Way of Experience-Based Leisure Education

MACKŮ, Richard January 2008 (has links)
The thesis presents possibilities and hazards resulting from the combination of experience-based education methods and those of doing philosophy with children. Having defined the terms used, it introduces the aims, key features and basic methods of leisure education; furthermore, experience-based education is described in more detail together with its fundamental elements: dramaturgy, adventure, reflection and games. The latter two elements are understood to be the links between experience-based education and Philosophy for children program. Then, the follow-up reflection on the interface between Philosophy with children and experiential activities is the substantial part of the thesis. Besides other topics, the philosophical aspects of games and reflection (review) as possible ways of experience-based philosophical inquiry are dealt with. Thus, in the closing part of the thesis, the potential for connecting philosophical inquiry and the experience itself is outlined.

Avaliação de instrumento de auxílio à escrita científica em inglês fundamentado na aprendizagem baseada em exemplos e em experiências aplicado em alunos pós-graduandos em Engenharia de Produção / Assessment of tool to aid scientific writing in English grounded on example- and experience-based learning applied to Production Engineering graduate students

Ralf Landim Reith 03 October 2013 (has links)
Scientific articles are the main communication means of disseminating results obtained by researchers around the world. However, writing scientific articles to highimpact journals is a complex task to authors for whom English is a second language. By means of example- and experience-based learning, reading, interpretation, and writing skills as regards the production of scientific texts can be developed through practice, facilitated by the use of reusable text snippets. Several computational tools have been developed to support the various phases of scientific writing in English. Existing tools that cater to this type of support are all geared to other research topics, incompatible with those inherent to Production Engineering, which has particular features of writing and structuring texts. The purpose of this research was to adapt and assess a new tool to help Production Engineering researchers to write articles English, grounded on example- and experience-based learning. To this end, two existing tools that aid scientists to read, annotate, and write articles in English were adapted and assessed through two experiments with ten Production Engineering graduate students at Brazilian public universities. Data were collected through a questionnaire in order to identify the effect of these tools on participants learning and time required to write articles. The adapted tools provide, in addition to snippets from published articles on Production Engineering, a structure more consistent with this field of knowledge. Results indicate 90% satisfaction rate with the new tool. Also, participants reported a positive effect on their writing skills as well as an 11% reduction in their time spent on scientific writing. Therefore, the tools in question have shown great potential to assist Production Engineering researchers in writing articles; moreover, their features may be adapted to scientific writing in other fields of knowledge.

Upplevelser och förändringar i rollen som ledare och hos individen under samt efter genomgången kurs i UGL : Utveckling av Grupp och Ledare / Experiences and changes in the role as a leader as well as in individuals during and after a course in UGL : Development of group and leader

Hjertell, Anna, Krabbsjö, Marie January 2020 (has links)
When searching for leadership development at Google and the database APA PsycInfo you get a about 200,000 hits. This indicates interest for the subject. The purpose of this essay is to study how the participants handle the processing and possible further develop experiences and changes that takes place during and after a course in UGL. The issues concern topics about how they, in their role as a leader, have worked with obtained knowledge. The issues concern topics about how they, in their role as a leader, have worked with acquired knowledge and the effect on them as an individual. We interviewed six leaders from central and south part of Sweden who, during 2019, has participated in a UGL course. We used semistructured interviews and choose to process the collected data using a thematic analysis. The most important thing that emerged about the role of the leader were the development of clarity, security and the effects of the individual leadership and the need for useful tools. The most characteristic on an individual level was gaining good knowledge about yourself. Group development was the topic that most frequently were mentioned during the interviews. Despite the small but well geographically dispersed participation of respondents, we provide insight into their experiences of how they got affected by the course, knowledge they acquired as leaders and the influence it had on them as individuals.

Astro Tourism - A Possible Path to Sustainable Development through Narratives and Stories

Gerasimova, Darina January 2021 (has links)
This thesis focuses on the use of narratives and how they connect Astro tourism to sustainability. This research is done from the viewpoint of the narrators and uncovers what narratives they have chosen to present to the visitors, their reasons to include those narratives, what messages they want to convey and how that relates to sustainability. This research was conducted in order to explore how narratives can be used together with Astro tourism to sustainably develop peripheral regions. This thesis uses a qualitative approach with in-depth interviews and inquests. The informants are people who conduct narrated Astro tourism tours in different parts of the world. The findings of this thesis are that in Astro tourism narratives can be used to educate, inspire, shape perceptions, raise awareness and develop environmental consciousness in people. The narratives can take part in the place, value and identity creation processes, can provide a sustainable competitive advantage, can link together the visual aspects and reconnect the visitors to nature and the past. These findings can be used in the broader field of science about narratives and storytelling in the experience-based industry. On a more practical side it is recommended to include narratives that communicate ideas about sustainability that the narrators personally feel passionate about, and they should consider what kind of message they want to convey through them and how that will affect the customer’s experience.

Brorsson, Ellinor, Bartoletti, Michaela January 2017 (has links)
The expectations for a company to actively work on reducing their environmental impact are higher today than ever before. With an environmental certification, companies can show their responsibilities towards the environment to their stakeholders, and improve the chances to securing a position on the future market. An environmental certification, such as the standard ISO 14001, includes the need for continuous improvements to an organization’s processes and strategic environmental work. The term continuous improvements origins from Toyota Motors successful way of working - kaizen. It implies that everything can be madea little better than it is right now. This interpretation of continuous improvements goeswell together with environmental improvements in business since we are still on a journeytowards the most sustainable way of living. Two electrical contracting companies have through the web-based application System C2TM excelled in their work with continuous environmental improvements. Since a success factor to continuous improvements has proven to be education, one can assume that the two studied companies have a learning culture in their workplace that has led to this success. However, this learning culture is not specified. The purpose of this study is to examine what a training session in ecologically sustainable development should involve, not only lead to continuous improvements, but also to continuous learning. To generate knowledge about this, a qualitative study has been made. Two focus group conversations with each of the studied companies were made to gather data about their work with continuous environmental improvements. The data from the focus group conversations were analyzed through a thematic analysis. The results show that a training session that aims to lead to continuous improvements and learning within the organization consists of several sessions. The training sessions should make use of the knowledge within the organization, connect the environmental issue to the organization, involve an engaged leadership, and make use of the personal engagement amongst the coworkers. Apart from this, demands on the company culture are being made in order to create a learning organization. The culture should be open to challenge the existing routines and strive to develop the company to the better. The results from this study show that there are similarities between continuous improvements and learning. Suggested as further research is to examine the similarities between learning and continuous improvements. Another example for further research is to test the factors presented in this study, in a training session about ecologically sustainable development.

Wendt, Josephine, Sandberg Magnusson, Gustav January 2024 (has links)
The purpose of the study is to investigate and create an understanding of the processes by which leaders learn to be leaders. The study also aims to examine what the leaders have learned and how these learning processes have occurred in the leaders' everyday lives. Nine semi-structured interviews were conducted with established leaders in various industries. A thematic analysis depicted how experiences through actions in everyday life together with reflection were the main processes considered decisive for how the leaders learned to be leaders. In addition, conditions such as the will to lead and the will to learn have played a central role. The result showed that abilities that the study interprets as softer values have developed over time in the leaders. The leaders indicate that personal maturity, experience, reflection and a willingness to learn contributed to their learning and development.
