Thus, several public policies to encourage the use of DG have been implemented as incentive mechanisms. However, it is necessary to verify if the current institutional environment is favorable for the promotion and development of this market in Brazil. In this context, the objective of this work is to identify the facilitating and inhibiting elements that influence the development of DG in the country, acting to mitigate uncertainties from the investors' point of view. For this, models of structure, regulatory environment, marketing rules, participating agents, modalities, segments and technologies are presented, allowing a better understanding of the current commercial model and the mechanisms used for its promotion. Through this documentary research, in addition to the analysis of the international experience, the accomplishment of case studies and semi-structured interviews, it was evaluated the context in which DG is found in Brazil, as well as in other countries, being possible to identify factors that can contribute in its growth, in order to establish facilitative strategies, highlighting the revision of existing legislation, the tax burden, the environmental licensing process, and credit lines, leading to a low use of this market. Finally, it is concluded that there has been a significant advance in public policies, but the current market model is not yet sufficiently favorable to further development of DG. Still, using the presented strategies can mitigate barriers and evolve, fostering the high potential for expansion, enabling a more adequate and reliable environment, and a sustainable development in the commercial model in force in Brazil.

Doença grave e internação em terapia intensiva: experiências em longo prazo de pessoas adoecidas e cuidadores / Serious illness and hospitalization in intensive care unit: long term experiences of sick people and caregivers

Karin Aparecida Casarini 07 June 2013 (has links)
The combined effects of serious illness with hospitalization at the ICU - Intensive Care Unit have been associated with the presence of short-term and long-term psychological consequences related to poor recovering, running with impaired physical and mental functioning, a worse quality of life characterized by loss of abilities, a greater number of physical symptoms as well as a greater number of negative psychological changes. The aim of this work was to understand the lived experience by sick people and their main caregivers related to the serious illness, besides the need to hospitalization at ICU trying to learn the consequences of such experiences in the life of those people. It is a descriptive clinical study with the use of qualitative researching method. Semi-structured interviews were conducted as well as observations of the research participants - two double ill persons and their respective caregivers - for at least six months from the intensive care unit discharge. The researching corpus, consisting of the interviews transcripts along with participants\' observation records, were analyzed in order to obtain the characterization of experiments and their linkage to each pair of participants, followed by an identification of the common elements present in the various threads of the two pairs\' experiences. Adopted, as theoretical, phenomenological ideas of Stein and psychoanalytical ideas of Winnicott. The analysis allowed the description of two main themes: the way sick people and caregivers experience severe diseases, furthermore care and its relationship with the opening to subjectivity. The first thematic area made it possible the description of serious illness impact also hospitalization at ICU in the life of sick people and their caregivers, mainly in relation with the experience of states of helplessness and psychic disorganization, potentially affecting the integration condition. The second area described experiences of health care and its relation with the way by which people could take ownership of their lived reality, allowing results of correspondence analysis of health actions toward the needs presented. The study has enabled reflection of health care environments understood as those which can be facilitators of expression and exercise of personal potential, contributing to the recovering and maintenance of health in sick people. Subjectivity has revealed to be a helping element in the organization and understanding of health needs, promoting the recognition of personal uniqueness, also the provision of facilitating environments. The approximation of caregivers\' experience still allowed understanding the difficulties encountered in the function of taking care highlighting specific needs presented by them.

Supporting Web-based and Crowdsourced Evaluations of Data Visualizations

Okoe, Mershack B 24 June 2016 (has links)
User studies play a vital role in data visualization research because they help measure the strengths and weaknesses of different visualization techniques quantitatively. In addition, they provide insight into what makes one technique more effective than another; and they are used to validate research contributions in the field of information visualization. For example, a new algorithm, visual encoding, or interaction technique is not considered a contribution unless it has been validated to be better than the state of the art and its competing alternatives or has been validated to be useful to intended users. However, conducting user studies is challenging, time consuming, and expensive. User studies generally requires careful experimental designs, iterative refinement, recruitment of study participants, careful management of participants during the run of the studies, accurately collecting user responses, and expertise in statistical analysis of study results. There are several variables that are taken into consideration which can impact user study outcome if not carefully managed. Hence the process of conducting user studies successfully can take several weeks to months. In this dissertation, we investigated how to design an online framework that can reduce the overhead involved in conducting controlled user studies involving web-based visualizations. Our main goal in this research was to lower the overhead of evaluating data visualizations quantitatively through user studies. To this end, we leveraged current research opportunities to provide a framework design that reduces the overhead involved in designing and running controlled user studies of data visualizations. Specifically, we explored the design and implementation of an open-source framework and an online service (VisUnit) that allows visualization designers to easily configure user studies for their web-based data visualizations, deploy user studies online, collect user responses, and analyze incoming results automatically. This allows evaluations to be done more easily, cheaply, and frequently to rapidly test hypotheses about visualization designs. We evaluated the effectiveness of our framework (VisUnit) by showing that it can be used to replicate 84% of 101 controlled user studies published in IEEE Information Visualization conferences between 1995 and 2015. We evaluated the efficiency of VisUnit by showing that graduate students can use it to design sample user studies in less than an hour. Our contributions are two-fold: first, we contribute a flexible design and implementation that facilitates the creation of a wide range of user studies with limited effort; second, we provide an evaluation of our design that shows that it can be used to replicate a wide range of user studies, can be used to reduce the time evaluators spend on user studies, and can be used to support new research.

Informing the facilitation of Mathematics in the senior phase using Herrmann’s Whole Brain® theory

Randewijk, Elmarie January 2019 (has links)
This research innovation reports on the application of Herrmann’s Whole Brain® theory in facilitating and assessing learning in Mathematics in the senior phase, Grades 7 - 9. It is a two-part interrelated initiative that seeks both to augment current Mathematics-specific educational theories to improve practice, as well as to reflect on ways that these theories impact on the teaching practice. The literature review synthesises existing educational theories in terms of Herrmann’s Whole Brain® model into a new proposed comprehensive Mathematics-specific Whole Brain® model. This synthesis of existing “good practices” in Mathematics education in terms of Herrmann’s Whole Brain® model, supports the need for a Whole Brain® approach to teaching Mathematics. Furthermore, it hopes to be a user-friendly model with which teachers can plan and facilitate learning and assessment opportunities in Mathematics. Data was collected on the thinking preferences of each Mathematics teacher participant, as well learners’ perception of their teachers’ thinking preferences. Both qualitative and quantitative data was used to report on the findings. Individual and collective reflective practices, situated in the framework of professional development and action research, were used to analyse and report on the findings. The reflective practice resulting from the initiative is in itself an outcome of the research, since “those teachers who are students of their own effects are the teachers who are the most influential in raising students’ achievement” (Hattie & Yates, 2014, p. 24). The degree to which the reflective process impacted on each participant’s practice appears to be dependent on each teacher’s level of professional development. Teacher participants engaging in post-graduate studies showed the ability to complement their “existing competencies with needed situational competencies” (Herrmann, 1996, p. 39), meaning that these teachers were not limited by their thinking preferences, but were able to employ lesser preferred preferences when needed. Each teacher participant’s unique set of thinking preferences was obtained using the Hermann Brain Dominance Instrument (HBDI®). When each of these unique profiles were combined, they produced a compound Whole Brain® profile. This supported Herrmann’s (1990, p. 10) notion that every sizeable group would consist of a “composite whole brain”, but also showed that there is no specific set of thinking preferences unique to a Mathematics teacher. The learner questionnaires also indicated a reasonably balanced Whole Brain® profile amongst learners, supporting the need for a Whole Brain® approach to facilitating learning and assessing in Mathematics. The reflective cyclic process of theory informing practice and practice in turn informing theory is at the core of this research innovation. This cyclic process has become my living theory from which I hope to inspire others to engage in similar initiatives. / Thesis (PhD)--University of Pretoria, 2019. / Humanities Education / PhD / Unrestricted

Innovative Facilitating of Learning to Foster Holistic Professionals in the Oral Hygiene Profession

Buthelezi, Noluthando Loveness January 2020 (has links)
As a lecturer in the module Orthodontics in the study programme Bachelor of Oral Hygiene, the construct innovative facilitating of learning is the one I adopted as I embarked on a self-transformative journey. This dissertation focuses on the professional development of my practice and the self (me). The self-transformative journey taken was not taken independently but with my students who became my co-travellers and co-constructors engaging in a learning process. Engaging in a learning process meant journeying in the steps of the Action Research cycle(s) and being especially observant of Herrmann’s Whole-Brain® thinking theory and other learning theories such as constructivist learning, cooperative learning, self-regulated learning and the like. / Dissertation (MEd)--University of Pretoria 2020. / pt2021 / Humanities Education / MEd / Unrestricted

The Self-administered Interview (SAI) - A sum of its parts? : A comparison between different componentes of SAI from temporal aspects and as facilitators for later retrieval

Söderlund, Patrik January 2023 (has links)
When conducting initial forensic interviews, facilitating later retrieval in an efficient and timely manner is often important. A tool called The Self-Administered Interview (SAI) has been shown to facilitate later retrieval when completed initially. Even if less time-consuming than other interviewing protocols, it still takes considerable time to complete. This study compared the capability to facilitate later retrieval and temporal aspects of SAI and its separate parts to investigate the relative worth of each part. The two separate parts were a written, free recall and the rest of SAI without the free recall. Forty-five participants completed either of the parts after watching a fictious crime. Six days later a memory test was administered. This study used the same research design as two previous studies which allowed for integrated analysis using data from the three studies. SAI facilitated later retrieval by significantly increasing number of correct answers and decreasing number of incorrect answers. SAI without a free recall significantly decreased number of incorrect answers. SAI took approximately twice as long to complete as a written, free recall. SAI without free recall had comparable results as a free recall but took almost the same time to complete as SAI. An overall pattern for all initial actions was that an increase in complexity and comprehensive design, increased performance but also took longer to complete. If performance is priority and time is not a factor, SAI is recommended. If lowering time of completion is priority a free recall is the quickest action.

An exploration of tutors' experiences of facilitating problem-based learning. Part 1: An educational research methodology combining innovation and philosophical tradition

Haith-Cooper, Melanie January 2003 (has links)
Yes / The use of problem-based learning (PBL) in Health Professional curricula is becoming more wide spread. Although the way in which the tutor facilitates PBL can have a major impact on students’ learning (Andrews and Jones 1996), the literature provides little consistency as to how the tutor can effectively facilitate PBL ( Haith-Cooper 2000 ). It is therefore important to examine the facilitation role to promote effective learning through the use of PBL. This article is the first of two parts exploring a study that was undertaken to investigate tutors’ experiences of facilitating PBL. This part focuses on the methodology and the combining of innovative processes with traditional philosophical traditions to develop a systematic educational research methodology. The study was undertaken respecting the philosophy of hermeneutic phenomenology but utilised alternative data collection and analysis technique. Video conferencing and e-mail were used in conjunction with more traditional processes to access a worldwide sample. This paper explores some of the issues that arose when undertaking such a study. The second article then focuses on exploring the findings of the study and their implications for the facilitation of PBL.
