Brist på själslig insikt? : Utomjordingar och deras forskning kring människan i Dark City / Lack of spiritual understanding? : Aliens and their research about humans in Dark CityPettersson, Björn January 2012 (has links)
The paper examines how human inner properties and the interpretation of the external worldare explained and presented in Dark City (Alex Proyas, 1998). Aspects as the relationship between the body and soul/consciousness, body snatching, memory transferences and dystopian cities are analyzed. The field of study is compared to a general science-fiction film perspective regarding the aspects. Dark City contains an alien race with a common mind, but who lacks soul and individuality. They represent what humanity can become if the scientific development goes too far. They conduct research about the human soul to save their own race. They fail to reach the soul trough scientific experiments, which include memory transferences. The only remaining explanation is that the soul has an immaterial origin. This is against the common materialistic view in the current science-fiction genre; the inner aspects are to a large extent explained from a cognitive/neural perspective. This means that Dark City implicit criticize movies and theories which states that we may be able to understand and create copies of the human consciousness.

Värdegrundsarbete genom skönlitteratur / Working with school ethics with the use of fictionMaras, Vedran, Wetterborg, Erik January 2011 (has links)

Manninen Hedkvist, Anneli January 2010 (has links)
The objective of this study is to investigate a new pedagogical material called 4DFrame, how it is experienced by informants and how suitable it is in education - in particular mathematics. Socioculturalperspective has a central role in this study when students are given opportunities for linguistic and social interaction during the experiment with the new pedagogical material. The methodology for this study has been visits, interviews, and observations. The study reveals that there are different views on the didactic potential for mathematics of the new teaching material, though no conclusions can be drawn regarding whether this material is more or less suitable in teaching since no research have been found that compares this with other pedagogical materials. Both national and international studies show the need to find alternative and better ways to make mathematic education meaningful. One way to change and improve mathematics teaching may be to demonstrate the possibilities of working with new educational materials. The study highlights potential usages informants disclosed to me. When asked to compare with other educational materials the informants listed in positive terms the materials creative imagination stimulating properties and durability. The informants also indicated that students' mathematical creativity was developed by the playful way of making designs based on drawings, and look for patterns in their designs and also having a playful way to calculate angles, calculate and estimate material consumption. During class evaluation gatherings students also sent their observations and reflections to classmates which contributed to new ideas. The group work integrated various substances which helped the students and included mathematics, Swedish language, technology, visual and IT technologies in their lessons. Preschools received material with joy, curiosity, and excitement. The children began to play and role play when they were presented with the new teaching material. The disadvantages of the informants said were that the material was expensive to buy, the boxes the material was stored in were too small and that there were no Swedish instructions. Some respondents also felt that it was difficult to keep track of all the small parts. The majority of the respondents, even those who also were critical, however, stated that the new teaching material is suitable to teach geometry.

Religion in computer games : Religious themes conveyed through an unorthodox mediumOde, Jon January 2012 (has links)
The purpose of this essay is an attempt to create a “first basis” of reliability for religious content in computes games, and its value in academic studies. While not researching it in depth, this essay will also give a suggestion of computer games’ potential as a didactic medium. A quantitative comparative analysis has been performed, to present several common religious themes and their occurrence in the computer game respectively. While researching the game, an abundance of religious themes have been found, documented and presented. Through this, it is concluded that computer games not only have the capability of presenting religious themes; they are found to be capable mediums of presentation. The content itself is of high varsity and of great interest to any religious scholar.

Prophets in the margins : fantastic, feminist religion in contemporary American telefantasyHowell, Charlotte Elizabeth 12 July 2011 (has links)
In this thesis, I will examine the connected representations of religion and gender in the context of contemporary American telefantasy (a term for science fiction, fantasy, and horror television genres) programs that include characters who experience fantastic visions that can be explained as originating from either divine or medically materialist origins. The fantastic mode, facilitated by telefantasy’s non-verisimilitudinous genre, presents these visions in a liminal space in which religious and gender representations can potentially subvert or challenge patriarchal and hegemonic representational norms. I analyze Battlestar Galactica (Sci-Fi 2003-2009), Eli Stone (ABC 2008-2009), and Wonderfalls (FOX 2004) for their formal presentation of visions, representations of visionary characters, and the religious representations that form the context for the visions and visionaries. I focus on visionary characters that are directly implicated by the television text as being potential prophets: Laura Roslin and Gaius Baltar on Battlestar Galactica, Eli Stone on Eli Stone, and Jaye Tyler on Wonderfalls. Though each visionary character explores the possibility of subverting patriarchal religious norms, Roslin, Baltar, and Stone’s prophetic roles ultimately privilege patriarchal readings of their narratives, but Jaye, by avoiding the language-symbol systems of traditional religions, maintains the fantastic liminal space and thus the potential for subversion, even if it is only a possibility in the narrative. This thesis seeks to contribute to the scholarship of religious representations in fictional television, with a special emphasis on telefantasy. / text

Sports and the city : the rhetorical construction of civic identity through American football teamsDuda, Emily Jo 03 October 2011 (has links)
Sports fandoms can form a key site of identity formation, particularly as they gather and merge numerous threads of identity, including gender, socio-economic status, and civic affiliation. The connections formed between members of the fandom, the fandom and the team, and the fandom and the place in which it is grounded can be a strong force for social cohesion. This cohesion becomes particularly relevant during times of crisis, when some turn to sports as a unifier. However, these relationships can also be fraught with tensions, within the group and without. Forces such as nostalgia and the ‘othering’ of those outside the group become import methods in creating and sustaining these Andersonian “imaginary communities” of fans, mitigating difference. In examining this process of identity creation, two cities were chosen for their intense team attachments: Pittsburgh and Baltimore. Qualitative analysis of discourses surrounding the teams in these cities reveals the complex ways in which nostalgic fantasies about the team and its relationship to the city are created and maintained, hierarchies of space and time are formed, and the identity of the community is shaped by its relationship to team and city. Analysis of the sporting landscape, created through a complex network of material culture, media, and the repetition of certain fantasy themes, reveals how geography is complexly implicated in the production of sporting fandom. / text
