Previous issue date: 2006-10-31 / This research focuses on the adoption of Transversality in
the critical formation of students in an English teacher formation course. Our
objective is to show that this approach gives the students the opportunity of
building knowledge in interaction with reality. Facing themes of social
relevance, the pre-service teacher develops communicative and linguistic
abilities through reports and discussions, which will enable him / her to
develop critical thinking. This criticism gives the student the possibility of
experiencing linguistic characteristics of argumentative discourse. This study
is supported by theories which include: a. Transversality, as seen by Celani,
Yus and others; b. the teaching-learning interaction according to Vygostky s
Zone of Proximal Development; c. ethics; and d. inclusive education. Data is
analyzed according to qualitative methodology and data collection followed
ethnographic procedures. The participants are the students and teacher in an
English teacher formation course at the Pontifícia Universidade Católica de
São Paulo. Data was obtained from presentations delivered at the end of a
thematic discussion adopting a transdisciplinary approach. An audio recording
and subsequent transcription were performed. The results suggest that the
students frequently adopted an argumentative discourse to express
themselves critically, moving beyond the narrative discourse borders
proposed in the original course programme. It is our belief that a critical,
committed formation of English pre-service teachers will foster the relevance
of their role as educators of critical and inclusive citizens. This is the
motivation for this study to be carried out and presented / Este estudo aborda a adoção da Transversalidade na
afetam o cotidiano, o aluno desenvolve habilidades comunicativas e
características do discurso argumentativo.
Desenvolvimento Proximal; c. ética; e d. inclusão. A metodologia adotada é

Previous issue date: 2007-03-30 / This study, part of Project Direct - Towards the language of business
communication (LAEL/PUC-SP), aims to present the results of a needs analysis
carried out in the professional context of 40 waiters and two managers of two
sophisticated restaurants in the city of São Paulo. To collect the data, three
questionnaires were used two were answered by the waiters, and the third, by
the restaurant managers. In order to conduct the needs analysis of these
professionals, we looked for support in Hutchinson s & Waters (1987)
languages for specific purposes approach (1987). These authors argue that the
needs analysis is extremely important, as it enables not only the implementation
of a course but also its continuous evaluation. The linguistic analysis of the work
is based on the Functional Grammar proposed by Halliday (1994, 2004) and his
collaborators - among others, Eggins (1994) and Martin & White (2005).
Functional Grammar is a language theory that focuses on the effective use of
language, that is, the manner in which the user uses language in different
contexts. Functional Grammar was employed to analyze the appraisal items
that occur in the waiters answers to the questionnaires, based on the Appraisal
System of Martin & White (2005) and on the analysis model proposed by
Eggins & Slade (1997). The results of the needs analysis and of the Appraisal
System analysis revealed that the most important items to be included in a
professional qualification course, according to the waiters, are: assistance to
restaurant clients, self-evaluation, and performance. The present work intends
to have contributed to the suggestion of a course proposal for the professional
development of waiters that takes into account the needs considered by the
waiters who participated in this study as relevant for professionals who intend to
work in the area / Este estudo, parte do Projeto Direct - Em direção à linguagem dos negócios
restaurantes.

Previous issue date: 2006-12-21 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / This thesis dissertation was carried out in the intersection of the Critical Applied
Linguistics (Rajagopalan, 2003), Critical Theory (Habermas, 1985, Heller, 1970)
and Critical Pedagogy (Freire, 1970) areas of knowledge production. It aims at
investigating the language employed either to include or exclude the members
of educational contexts in Brazil. This is seen in the school organization,
historically speaking, through the analysis of laws and public policies that have,
traditionally been prescribing the work developed within the public school
environment. In other words, this dissertation aims at discussing school
inclusion as it has been practiced throughout history, and, more precisely, in the
last few years, when the term has been defined and implemented, so as to verify
if, by what means and in which instances the project of school inclusion has led
to social inclusion especially of educators and students. Theoretically speaking
the text is base don the dialogical understanding of language
(Bakhtin/Volochinov, 1929), the theory of communicative action (Habermas,
1985), the historical constructs of social and school organization (Schwarcz,
1993; Patto, 1999; Hobsbawn, 1995), developmental constructs (Vygotsky,
1930, 1934; Leontiev, 1959), a collaborative perspective of teacher education
(Magalhães, 2005) so as to strengthen the understanding of what might be an
inclusive practice. In order to discuss a possible inclusive practice, one would
evidently have to discuss issues that historically have been the chore of
exclusion, since inclusion would never have become an issue for laws and
discourses if not for the predominance of exclusion in our society. In
methodological terms, this dissertation is based on a critical perspective as well,
i.e., it is a piece of work that aims at contributing to the transformation of the
status quo. Its methodology is then partially defined by the Critical Hermeneutic
concepts (Ricouer, 1986) and, partially, by a Critical-Collaborative perspective
(Magalhães, 2002a, 2002b, 2005) the former as a means to understanding
data generation and treatment and the latter relating to the means by which the
project was re-designed several times by the joint action of participants. The
data reveals that school inclusion, in Sao Paulo, is not leading to the social
inclusion of children. Besides it has been leading to the exclusion of teachers
who are not being educated to work within the current school diversity / Inserido na intersecção da Lingüística Aplicada Crítica (Rajagopalan, 2003), da
1999; Hobsbawn, 1995), concepções acerca do desenvolvimento (Vygotsky,
colaborativo-crítica (Magalhães, 2002a, 2002b, 2005) a primeira dizendo

Previous issue date: 2006-11-29 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / This investigation, grounded on the presuppositions of the collaborative research, as
discussed by Magalhães (2004; 2002; 1999; 1996), was held in spaces of continuous formation
of a public school of the municipal district of São Paulo, aiming to promote the reading of
primary scientific and of scientific popularization texts. The analysis work is guided by the
objective of investigating the manners of reading proceeded by six educators and the relationship
between those manners and the critical-reflexive teacher's formation. It is, also, our interest to
analyze the process of construction of senses, being considered the social voices put into action
by the participants in the dynamics of appropriation of the author's of the read text saying.
The theoretical framework concerns to the themes of the teachers' formation and of
reading and language. As for the first, we presented, based on authors as Marcílio (2005), Borges
(2005), Nosella (2005), and Ribeiro (2003), the history of the teachers' formation in Brazil and
the formation conceptions that are in opposition to the technicist tendency that marked this
history in order to stress here the value of the critical-reflexive formation, according to approach
defended by authors as Libâneo (2002), Pepper (2002), Giroux (1998), and Contreras (1999). In
relation to the theme of reading and language, we appealed, initially, to the field of the History of
the Reading, represented mainly by Chartier (1985; 1997), Hébrard (1985), Manguel (1996),
Anne-Marie Chartier, and Hébrard (1995), to build the understanding that the reading is related
to a singular work of signification of the utterance of the other, conformed to the context in what
the activity takes place and to the reading practices built along man's history in his relationship
with the written text. In order to demonstrate the breadth of these studies in the discussion
concerning teacher´s reading, we based by authors as Kleiman (2001), Batista (1999), and Britto
(1998). Grounded on Vygotsky (1925; w/d; 1934), Volochinov/Bakhtin (1926),
Bakhtin/Volochinov (1929), and Bakhtin (1934-35; 1952-53) our study searches to situate the
conception of reading defended by reading historians in its enunciative dimension.
The discussion of the data points out for the importance of analyzing the teacher's reading
in the relationship with the context in which this develops in order to consider the specific
demands of the educational work and the valorative appreciation that the professionals, as
subjects historically and culturally situated, elaborate in regarding to the saying of others. From
this perspective, the participants of this research show themselves as competent readers as far as
they transform the text in resource to understand their practice, to question proposals, and to look
for their adjustment to the private situation in which they are inserted / Esta investigação, pautada pelos pressupostos da pesquisa colaborativa, conforme
esses modos e a formação do professor crítico-reflexivo.
elaboram a respeito do dizer alheio.

Previous issue date: 2007-05-15 / Secretaria da Educação do Estado de São Paulo / This research examines the senses that the Pedagogical Technical Assistants (ATP) attribute to their role in contexts of public schools teachers education and investigates the critical reflection in the discussion sessions or reflective sessions (RS) with these professionals. This research is based on the Socio-Historical-Cultural Activity Theory (Vygotsky, 1930/1999; 1934/2002; Leontiev, 1978; Engeström, 1999; Daniels 2003) and emphasizes the fundamental role of language for: (1) the understanding of senses attributed by participants to their roles in teacher education, (2) the verification of the organization, division of working in the reflective sessions. The reflective principles of this research are based on studies by Paulo Freire (1970), Brookfield (1995), Magalhães (2004), Liberali (2004), among others. The collaboration reflective-critical methodology, which regards participants availability and presupposes questions about the practice is the basis of this research. Data were collected in discussion sessions and analyzed based on: Bronckart (2003), with emphasis on thematic content, voices and status in the enunciation. Kerbrat-Orecchioni (1996) based the analysis of interpersonal relations and some conversational markers were looked at as per Marcuschi (2003). Results showed that ATP s senses are impregnated of institutionalized or prescribed meanings, even though one of them tries to innovate his practice. Discourse analyses also showed that in the reflective activity there was a change from the initial object, which was the reflection about the ATP s senses, to unleashing of new actions in the context of teacher education centered in specific material for motivating the teachers, and the ATP s responsibility as teacher educator. The critical reflection occurred in very few moments and the relationship between ATP and researcher was supported by politeness, which provided participants with tranquility for putting forward their understandings, as well as for reminding them of their roles as teacher educators / Esta pesquisa examina os sentidos que alguns Assistentes Técnico-Pedagógicos (ATP) atribuem ao seu papel nos contextos de formação de professores de escolas públicas e investiga a reflexão crítica nas sessões de discussões ou sessões reflexivas (SR) com esses profissionais.

Previous issue date: 2007-08-02 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / The objective of this study is to describe and interpret the phenomenon of the
reflective process of academic coordinators in a continuing education online course,
considering for this the perspective of the people who lived this experience: the teacherresearcher
and the academic coordinators who were the students of a course entitled education.
The theoretical foundations of this piece of research lie in (a) an understanding of
teacher education processes which emphasizes the importance of the development of
teachers critical and reflective capacity, based on the concepts of Dewey (1916/1994,
1938/1967), Schön (1987, 1991, 1992), Almeida (2005-2006), Freire (1996), Kincheloe
(1993/1997), Nóvoa (1995), Perrenoud (2002), Pimenta (2002), Popkewitz (1995),
Sacristán (2002), Webb (1996) e Zeichner (1992); (b) a view of learning as socially
constituted and prone to be constructed within communities and to become concrete
taking as starting points elements that can be found in our routine activities, as discussed
by Vygotsky (1934/1984, 1937/1987), Lave & Wenger (1991) and Popper (1972); (c) a
concept that sees language from a post-modern perspective, that is, a view that
understands meaning as something which is always constructed in relation to some other
meaning through a dialogical process that is influenced by the inherent power
relationships of our society, as defined by Bakhtin (1929/1995), Foucault (1979) and
Graddol (1994); and, (d) a definition of curriculum as a construct that transcends the
organization of a syllabus and which is dynamic and open to changes that may adjust the
curriculum to better suit the different realities of the learners, according to the ideas of
Apple (1990) and Cavallo (2000).
The data for this research was collected throughout the development of the
course, on a longitudinal basis, for eighteen months, from May 2002 on. My experience
with the e-ducation made it possible the investigation of the phenomenon of the
reflective process of academic coordinators in a continuing education online course, which
was studied thoroughly, during the three modules of the course: the first one dealt with
learning strategies, the second one explored the concept of pedagogical common sense,
and the third one approached issues related to reflective teaching. Based on the concepts
of the Hermeneutic-Phenomenology approach to research, the investigation aimed at
describing and interpreting the phenomenon on focus through a thematic interpretation
process systematized by Freire (2006), whose work was inspired by a proposal of van
Manen (1990).
The interpretation of the texts reveals that the phenomenon of the reflective
process of academic coordinators in a continuing education online course is structured
around four themes: the triggering of reflection, which took place due to a series of
strategies used in the course; the mediation of reflection, interpreted through the
observation of the teacher s and the students participation throughout the course; the
actualization of reflection, related to the moments in which the participants materialize
their reflections and share opinions with their colleagues; and the environment for
reflection, identified through the observation of specific elements which are essential for
the phenomenon studied to take place / O objetivo desta tese é descrever e interpretar o fenômeno do processo reflexivo
desenvolvimento do e-ducation possibilitou o estudo do fenômeno do processo reflexivo
abordagem Hermenêutico-Fenomenológica, a investigação visou à descrição e

Previous issue date: 2007-09-14 / Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico / This research exams and compares differet versions of Educational
Curriculums by analyzing the representations about children, teacher, the
Conception of learning teaching and the contents in the following documents: 1) National Curricular Referencial to Childhood Education, 2) Curriculum-I
Elaborated by two day care centers in partnership with São Paulo City Halll;
And 3) transcription of the Teachers Development meetings which goal was to elaborate collectively, a New Curriculum that I am naming Curriculum II.
This work discusses, MEC prescription, the Institutional prescription, and
the self prefiguration that show the childhood education teacher s job, as
discussed by Bronckart & Machado (2004), Machado & Bronckart (2005), Clot
(2004), and Filliettaz (2004). This research is based in the Socio-Historical-
Cultural Theory, as discussed by Vygotsky and his collaborators, as well as
by researches that rediscussed and amplified it (Daniels, 1994, 2001, 2002;
Cole & Scribner, 2003; Newman & Holzman, 2002; Bronckart, 1997/2003,
2006; Clot, 2004). The discussions are focused on questions of childhood
development, as pointed by Vygotsky (1924/1999, 1926/2003; 1930/2003;
1932/2003;1934/2001); about curricular questions (Apple, 1992, 1995; Apple &
Beane, 2001; Giroux & Simon, 1995; Bassedas, Huguet & Solé, 1999); Oliveira,
2001; Sacristàn, 2000a, 2000d), and to questions about educational work
(Amigues, 2002, 2004; Machado, 2004; Clot, 2004; Saujat, 2004; Bronckart,
2006). The Critical Research of Collaboration and the Socio Discursive
Interactionism compose the theoretical methodological framework of this
dissertation. The Critical Research of Collaboration is based on a conception
of research in which the participants of the research participate in all the
atages, since the elaboration until the final results, which allows the creation
of a space to every member in the research to seek for theoretical
paradigmatic changes (Magalhães, 1994, 2002, 2004; Magalhães & Liberali,
2005). The Socio Discursive Interactionism, more than a interdisciplinary
conception is a science of human, crediting to the language and to the ways
of acting fundamental role in the human development (Bronckart, 1993/2003;
2006, and Bronckart & Machado, 2004) and it was used as theoretical basis
and table of analysis. This research made possible the elaboration of new
categories of analysis, as well as the innovation in data collecting, focusing
on three levels of documents related to teacher s job. This study alsos howed
how the representations configured in the prescribed material circle in the
métier of the job (Saujat, 2004) and 6 Tc (the) sediment in later documents related to the first one. Finally, it showed how the Curriculum of Childhood Education has a gap concerning contents to be developed with the children / Esta pesquisa examina e compara diferentes versões de Currículos de
Discute, assim,
respectivamente, a prescrição do MEC, a prescrição Institucional e a
ampliaram (Daniels, 1994, 2001, 2002; Cole & Scribner, 2003; Newman &
Holzman, 2002; Bronckart, 1997/2003, 2006; Clot, 2004). As discussões se
voltam para as questões do desenvolvimento infantil, como apontadas por
Vygotsky (1924/1999, 1926/2003; 1930/2003; 1932/2003; 1934/2001); para as
questões curriculares (Apple, 1992,1995; Apple & Beane, 2001; Giroux &
Simon, 1995; Bassedas, Huguet & Solé, 1999; Oliveira, 2001; Sacristàn, 2000a,
2000b), e para as questões do trabalho educacional (Amigues, 2002, 2004;
Machado, 2004; Clot, 2004; Saujat, 2004; Bronckart, 2006). A Pesquisa Crítica
professor.

Previous issue date: 2007-10-05 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / This research has as a far-reaching objective to contribute for a reflection about
the period of probation on teachers initial formation during the graduation period by
means of the analysis and the interpretation from constructed representations about the
teacher s work on the texts worked out in detail to orient the probationer in his tasks and
texts produced by his own initiative during the probation period. To accomplish this
study, we have adopted the theoretical presupposition of the so-called Social-Discursive
Interactionism (SDI) (Interacionismo Sóciodiscursivo ISD) that assigned to actions and
to the language a fundamental role in the human development.
In the SDI, the work is defined as a form of acting whose representations are
constructed in the language. In this way, the work consists of one of the central spaces of
the human being development in the current society. Thus, when we study texts that bring
representations on the probation period work, we are also contributing for a better
comprehension dealing with the human and professional development during the
graduation. This comprehension can help either the formation courses specifically in a
Language Course as well as all the ones that use the probation period and the production
of texts as a manner to assure the probationer s professional development.
With these objectives, we have presented in our work: a) a discussion about the
probation period and the devices of formation used; b) a synthesis of the methodological
theoretical presuppositions on which we consider the SDI theoretical chart and the
procedures of the human actions analysis represented on the texts besides the
contributions of recent researches used in the Work Science (Activity Ergonomics and
Activity Clinic) in order to construct a wider vision about the educational work beyond
the teacher s relation with the knowledge and his pupils.
In the methodology, we have presented the data collected in a Language College
from a private University in São Paulo State. They were consisted of a probation period
orientation document and ten projects produced by the probationers in a discipline called
Supervised Probation Period in Portuguese Language (Estágio Supervisionado em Língua
Portuguesa). As analysis procedures, we have looked for verifying in each text its wider
production context; internal questions organization, enunciative mechanisms and
semantic characteristics in the organization and interpretation of acting in the work. All
this have allowed detecting figures of action , indicating either the ways of saying the
actions or ways of actions in the teacher professional category.
Our analyses results have verified by means of the constructed figures of actions
that either the orientation probation period document or the projects have presented a
reduced vision concerned to the teacher s work and his role, retracting him as a general
manner and distant from the reality in which the probationer should observe in a stage
that proposes to form a teacher.
We have also noticed that when planning the classes is this reduced vision that
the probationer reacquires and forgets the practical activities that he has accomplished in
the probation period with a real teacher and modeling his action only from readings. In
this way, we have verified that the probationer s actions have the origin in the theoretical
read texts and not in the practical activities that he has participated. Thus, these results
obliged us to do a reflection about the form of orientation in the probation period and in
the projects production that can lead the probationer to know different discourses in order
to assume the interpretative debate among various positions to construct his own
desenvolvimento profissional do estagiário.

Previous issue date: 2008-05-08 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / The aim of this research is to verify how new meanings related to practice are built, based
on the music activities developed in foreign language (FL) classes.
This investigation includes the researcher, a teacher and a group of Junior students of a
public high school in the city of Cotia. The research was carried out during the school
year of 2006 and the material collected is composed of video recordings of four classes
and audio recordings of three reflective sessions. The data analysis is grounded on the
following aspects: (1) analysis of turn-taking and symmetry relations among the
participants (Marcuschi, 2006); (2) analysis of thematic content (Bronckart, 1999); and
(3) observation of how the participants place their enunciates (Bronckart, 1999). Two
questions guided this study: (1) Which is the objective of the activities in the
analyzed classes? ; (2) How the reflective sessions contributed to change the
teacher attitude face music activities?
This study is grounded on vygotskian concepts of learning and development, mediation
and ZPD (Vygotsky, 1993, 1994), as well as on the conception of language developed by
Bakhtin (1929, 1979) and on the reflexive actions suggested by Smyth (1992). The
present study adopted, as the methodology, the interventional collaborative research
(Magalhães, 1992), inserted in the critical-collaborative research frame, in a dialectical
standpoint of the research context.
From the discussion of the results, based on the theoretical frame, I verified that there are
contradictions in the teacher s speech during the reflective sessions, such as the
individual assessment of her own pedagogical practice. These contradictions are pointed
out and discussed during the third reflective session of the present work. This research
also indicates that the collaboration set during reflective sessions helped to construct a
collective environment of knowledge which can potentially generate significant changes
pesquisadora

Previous issue date: 2008-05-09 / This study aims at (1) describing and interpreting the presence of computers in the teaching-learning process taken as a phenomenon of lived experience; and at (2) identifying the representations public school teachers and managers have about the use of such a machine. As its ultimate goal, this investigation also aims at gathering input for the design and future implementation of a teachers technological education course.
This research is theoretically based on the notion of representations (Freire & Lessa, 2003); on discussions about learning mediated by computers from a socio-interactional perspective (Vygotsky, 1934/1998, 1934/2000); on concepts of literacy in face-to-face (Freire, 1990; Tfouni, 1988, 2006) and in digital environments (Sampaio & Leite, 1990); on questions regarding teachers education in the digital society, emphasizing digital inclusion and possible roles carried out by educators in contexts mediated by technological tools (Kenski, 2003, 2007; Valente 2005; Pellanda, Schlunzen & Schlunzen Junior, 2005; Moran, 2007).
The methodological approach is the hermeneutic-phenomenological one (Ricouer, 1986/2002; van Manen, 1990; Freire, 2006). The research context was a public school, located in the East area of São Paulo city. The textual registers were collected through questionnaires given to participants in a printed or e-mail format. The research comprised three moments: twenty teachers and four managers took part in the first; twelve teachers were enrolled in the second; and three managers participated in the third moment.
The outcomes indicated that teachers and mangers share some similar representations. However, when confronted, teachers mention the lack of specific courses directed towards technological skills, as well as the lack of technical support in schools; while managers emphasize the lack of teachers technological skills as a relevant obstacle. By interpreting the presence of computers in the teaching-learning process, the study provides the bases to claim that knowledge, facilities, and difficulties are the themes that constitute such a phenomenon of lived experience / Este trabalho tem por objetivo (1) descrever e interpretar o fenômeno da presença do computador no ensino-aprendizagem, e (2) identificar as representações que professores e gestores de uma escola pública da rede estadual têm sobre o seu uso.
A abordagem metodológica utilizada é a hermenêutico-fenomenológica (Ricouer, 1986/2002; van Manen, 1990; Freire, 2006).
