Silva Junior, José Luiz Ferreira da January 2012 (has links)
In this work we study the Kondo Lattice model for the kagome lattice, in order to understand better the effects of geometrical frustration in heavy-fermion systems. In this context, we consider a mean field scheme valid for all the system’s phases. Firstly, we analyzed the nonmagnetic case. In this approximation the electron energies and spectral functions are reachable, then we use the density of states to calculate the occupations selfconsistently. Our results are qualitatively compared with previous works in other geometries. In the second part we introduce an approximation for magnestism, which takes into account the mean field scheme considered and the presence of geometrical frustration. Self-consistent calculations are done through the frequencies summation method. Our results show that the magnetism is supressed when the temperature is increased or the band filling deviates from half-filling. Besides, the coexistence of magnetic order and Kondo effect is not observable.

Acoplamento spin-fonon em sistemas magneticamente frustrados / Spin-phonon coupling in magnetically frustrated systems

Garcia Flores, Ali Francisco 28 September 2007 (has links)
Orientador: Eduardo Granado Monteiro da Silva / Tese (doutorado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Fisica Gleb Wataghin / Made available in DSpace on 2018-08-09T10:44:24Z (GMT). In this thesis we present an investigation of two magnetically frustrated systems, namely the RMn2O5 series (R = Eu, Bi, Dy) and the intermetallic compound GdAl3, in addition to the double perovskite compound Sr2CoUO 6. These systems were studied mainly using the Raman spectroscopy technique and complemented with magnetic susceptibility measurements. For the system RMn2O5 (R = Bi, Eu, and Dy), we present a study of the low- and high-frequency optical phonons. All studied materials show anomalous phonon shifts below a new characteristic temperature, T*~ 60-65 K. The sign and magnitude of such shifts appear to be correlated with the ionic radius of R. For instance, the high-energy phonons evolve from softenings for R = Bi to hardenings for R = Dy, and show an intermediary behavior for R = Eu in the temperature range between TC/TN and T*. On the other hand, the low-frequency anomalous phonon behaviors show softenings for R = Bi and hardening for R = Eu and Dy in the same paramagnetic range ( TC/TN < T < T*). Additional phonon anomalies were identified below ~ TN ~ 40-43 K, re ecting the onset of long-range ferroelectric and/or magnetic order of the Mn sublattice. Complementary dc-magnetic susceptibility [x(T)] measurements for BiMn2O5 up to 800 K yield a Curie-Weiss temperature q CW = -253(3) K, revealing a fairly large frustration ratio ( q CW / TN). Deviations of the inverse magnetic suceptibility, substracting the diamagnetic term, from a Curie-Weiss paramagnetic behavior due to magnetic correlations were observed below temperatures of the order of q CW . An interesting feature is the derivative of the inverse susceptibility, which shows in ection points at ~ 160 K and ~ T*. Supported by x(T) data, the anomalous Raman phonons shifts below T* are interpreted in terms of the spin-phonon coupling, in a scenario of strong magnetic correlations. Overall, these results support significant magnetic frustration, introducing a new characteristic temperature ( T*), and suggest a surprinsingly rich behavior for the magnetic correlations in the paramagnetic phase in this system. In GdAl3, the interaction among the spin degree of freedom and the atomic displacements were investigated by means of polarized Raman scattering. In this compound the Gd 4 f 7 shell is spherical, indicating that the crystal field e ect can be neglected. The spin-lattice coupling provide a fingerprint of the exchange mechanism and degree of magnetic correlations in this system. Raman scattering in fresh broken surfaces shows phonons with conventional frequency behavior, while naturally grown and polished surfaces present frequency anomalies below a characteristic temperature T** ~ 50 K. Such anomalies are possibly due to a modulation of the magnetic energy by the lattice vibrations in a strongly spin-correlated paramagnetic phase. A fully spin-correlated state inmediately above TN is inferred from our results in this frustrated system. Also, we suggest that the spin-phonon coupling in metals may depend in the surface conditions due to phonon anomalies were observed only in old-surface samples. Finally, for the Sr2CoUO6 double perovskite, the first- and higher-order Raman modes were studied as a function of temperature. Our Raman scattering results revealed the existence of two characteristic temperatures, T1 ~ 150 K e T2 ~ 300 K, where we observed unconvencional intensity behaviors of the Raman spectra and an anomalous softening of a particular high-energy mode below T2. These anomalies suggest structural and/or electronic phase transitions at such characteristic temperatures. Based on relevant modifications of the Raman spectra and the near-constant position behavior with temperature, we suggest a contribution of the Franck-Condon mechanism in this system / Doutorado / Física da Matéria Condensada / Doutor em Ciências

In this scenario, the Brazilians judges tend to be tolerant with relativizing the effects of laws and contracts, modifying obligation in order to generate equity and practice social justice. One of the main legal mechanisms for the judicial breaches of contracts is the Theory of Frustration. An important legal instrument, which serves to prevent distortions in contractual relations, gains a part at the expense of an excessive burden of the other, the Theory of Frustration is often invoked by producers of agricultural commodities, especially soya, to terminate or resurvey future sales contracts, one of the main mechanisms of funding the Brazilian agribusiness. Occurs that opportunistic breaches of these contracts create instability in the agricultural sector, producing additional costs for production and causing loss of competitiveness.

Emotional display in argument, storytelling and teasing:a multimodal analysis

Yu, C. (Changrong) 01 June 2012 (has links)
Abstract This dissertation studies emotional displays in talk-in-interaction, especially focusing on conversational argument, storytelling and teasing. The aim is to understand how verbal expressions, prosodic cues, and embodied actions interact with each other in emotional expression. The main analytic approach and methodology is conversation analysis and multimodal interaction analysis, applied to interactional sequences from everyday conversations. The research data comes from three different video recordings and their transcripts. First, the dissertation reveals two broad types of frustration in conversational argument. The findings suggest that combined verbal and nonverbal expression of frustration involves a complex interplay of prosodic cues and embodied actions. Nonverbal expression of frustration is displayed by embodied actions alone. Second, the dissertation shows how shared joy is conveyed between storytellers and recipients in storytelling. They can achieve shared joy because the recipients express willing participation and active recipiency in two main ways: they display verbal appreciation of the story, or they join in the storytelling through laughter, smiles, head nods, and gaze exchanges. The recipients may also offer summaries or interpretations of events in the story by comparing their own experiences to events in the story. Third, the dissertation analyzes playful teasing activity, showing how teasing activity can bring about a shared experience of amusement for both teasers and their “targets.” The study argues that recipients of teasing are active contributors in the social interaction. The transient embarrassment felt by the teased participants does not prevent the exchange from reaching a shared experience of amusement.

Dynamique vitreuse sur la sphère S2 / Glassy dynamics on the sphere

Vest, Julien-Piera 23 November 2015 (has links)
We are interested in the description of the dynamics of a supercooled liquid through the study of a model which relies on a simple geometrical ingredient. Starting from a monodisperse Lennard-Jones system on the euclidean plane, we add frustration by curving the space to form a sphere of arbitrary radius. Using a molecular dynamics algorithm, we showed that this system indeed behaves like a glassy liquid at equilibrium. The dynamics, caracterized by the self-intermediate scattering function $F_s(k,t)$, slows down strongly and changes shape at low temperature, for a small variation of the statics. The system behaves like a strong glass for high curvatures, but its fragility increases when the curvature decreases. The shape of $F_s(k,t)$ is also modified when the curvature decreases, which we tried to explain theoretically through the study of the mode coupling theory (MCT) on the sphere. We derived the dynamical equation of spherical MCT and studied the long time limit of its solution. We predict a dynamic transition similar to the one predicted by euclidean MCT, which does not allow us to explain the effect of curvature on $F_s(k,t)$, though the curvature has an influence on the value of the transition temperature. Finally, we studied the role of "defects", among which a minimal number of $12$ is imposed by topology. At low temperature, the defects tend to form linear structures, as predicted theoretically and observed in some experiments. The defects have a strong contribution in the relaxation; however, the role of other particles is not negligible.

Experimental Investigation of New Low-Dimensional Spin Systems in Vanadium Oxides

Kaul, Enrique Eduardo 30 June 2005 (has links)
In this dissertation we reported our experimental investigation of the magnetic properties of nine low-dimensional vanadium compounds. Two of these materials are completely new (Pb2V5O12 and Pb2VO(PO4)2) and were found during our search for new low-dimensional vanadium oxides. Among the other seven vanadium compounds studied, three were physically investigated for the first time (Sr2VO(PO4)2, BaZnVO(PO4)2 and SrZnVO(PO4)2). Two had hitherto only preliminary, and wrongly interpreted, susceptibility measurements reported in the literature (Sr2V3O9 and Ba2V3O9) while the remaining two (Li2VOSiO4 and Li2VOGeO4) were previously investigated in some detail but the interpretation of the data was controversial. We investigated the magnetic properties of these materials by means of magnetic susceptibility and specific heat (Cp(T)) measurements (as well as single crystal ESR measurements in the case of Sr2V3O9). We synthesized the samples necessary for our physical studies. That required a search of the optimal synthesis conditions for obtaining pure, high quality, polycrystalline samples. Single crystals of Sr2V3O9 and Pb2VO(PO4)2 were also successfully grown. Pb2VO(PO4)2, BaZnVO(PO4)2, SrZnVO(PO4)2, Li2VOSiO4 and Li2VOGeO4 were found to be experimental examples of frustrated square-lattice systems which are described by the J1-J2 model. We found that Li2VOSiO4 and Li2VOGeO4 posses a weakly frustrated antiferromagnetic square lattice while Pb2VO(PO4)2, BaZnVO(PO4)2 and SrZnVO(PO4)2 form a more strongly frustrated ferromagnetic square lattice. Pb2V5O12 is structurally and compositionally related to the two dimensional A2+V4+nO2n+1 vanadates. Its structure consists of layers formed by edge- and corner-shared square VO5 pyramids. The basic structural units are plaquettes consisting of six corner-shared pyramids pointing in the same direction, which form a spin lattice of novel geometry.

Escala de Tolerancia a la Frustración en quechuahablantes peruanos: Adaptación y evidencias de validez / Frustration Tolerance Scale in Peruvian Quechuaspeakers: Adaptation and Evidence of Validity

Huamani Villalobos, Carolina Alejandra, Soria Estrada, Ana Adelia 06 November 2020 (has links)
The purpose of the present study was to adapt and validate the Frustration Tolerance Scale (Oliva et al., 2011) for its use in the Peruvian adolescent population. The sampling was intentional and 436 Quechua-speaking adolescents from Cusco and Apurímac, between 12 and 17 years of age of both sexes, were evaluated. The factorial structure of the scale and its reliability were analyzed. For this, the Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) and the Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) were applied, where the statistical sample was randomly divided into 206 and 230 participants respectively. The results show that the EFA reveals the unidimensionality of the scale with eigenvalues greater than those generated by chance and that it explains 44.5% of the total variance. Likewise, factor loadings were greater than 0.40 and the AFC corroborated this structure. The model showed satisfactory and better fit indices (CFI = 1,000; RMSEA = .000; SRMR = .049). The internal consistency coefficient was adequate (ω = .67). It is concluded that the Quechua translation of the scale has preliminary evidence to be considered a precise, valid and invariant measure to evaluate tolerance to frustration in Quechua-speaking Peruvian adolescents. / Tesis
