: A study regarding youths’ thoughts on mental health

Josefsson, Therese, Carlsson, Johanna January 2015 (has links)
The purpose of the study was to examine how young adults reason about mental health and mental illness and what they do to promote their own mental health. Their answers were then analyzed from a gender theoretical perspective. The study has been accomplished through a qualitative research method in the form of focus group interviews with young adults. The analysis of the collected data was done through inductive approach with inspiration from the hermeneutic methodology. The young adults in the study thought of mental health as something a person can feel, do and promote, and something that doesn’t have to prioritized if they don’t want to. School as an institution was seen as one of the major things that influenced their mental health. Women’s mental health is often what is highlighted in the media and the young adults way of reasoning about mental health seemed to be influenced by this fact. The young adults thought that young women were the ones suffering the most from society’s stereotypical gender roles. The health of young women was thought of as having a direct connection to how they handled society’s beauty standards. The young adults’ way of reasoning reflected the ideas that exist in society today regarding gender equality in that men and women are relatively equal. The young adults also have knowledge about the complexity of problems that are associated with gender equality.

Kvinnligt och manligt i Veckorevyn : - En kritisk diskursanalys

Nurmi, Johannes January 2014 (has links)
The purpose of this paper is to explore how masculinity and femininity are constructed in the magazine Veckorevyn, through a critical discourse analysis of 18 articles from six issues in 2011. This is done by using a variety of theories and previous research results, which is gender theory, the theory of late-modern society and media theory. The analysis shows that Veckorevyn depicts virility and feminine differently. Furthermore, pointing the results from the analysis that a change of manhood and womanhood takes place in the social practice. The selection of articles from the magazine also shows that Veckorevyn seems to promote gender equality.

Gender as a resource of power at the early modern court of Württemberg, c. 1580-1630

Maritz, Regine January 2018 (has links)
This dissertation investigates how the category of gender difference was mobilised as a practice of power at the early modern court. It argues that gender was not simply a relational category affecting who could participate in early modern politics in what ways, but that it constituted a crucial and active resource of dynastic power. This subject of study is opened up through a case study of the court of Württemberg in the subsequent reigns of Dukes Friedrich I and his son Johann Friedrich, which span the period of time from 1593 to 1628. The reign of Duke Friedrich I was a time of political reform, which saw the influence of the local estates curtailed and an extroverted foreign policy pursued, whilst the duke concurrently entertained several extramarital affairs in contention with Lutheranism’s prescriptions. His son Johann Friedrich clearly took exception to his father's lifestyle, since, at Friedrich's premature death in 1608, he imprisoned a number of his father's mistresses and procuresses. He was forced to let the majority of these women go again quite quickly, keeping only one suspected procuress in custody, whose case was to drag on until 1618. Johann Friedrich's mother Duchess Sibylla, who had borne fifteen children to Friedrich and thus became the Stammesmutter of a new Württemberg dynastic line, was involved in these dealings. The contrast of these two differently structured approaches to rulership allows for the investigation of the power dynamics of monogamy and polygamy in one coherent case study. Württemberg is an interesting location for this research since it was a large and important territory of southern Germany, which came to be deeply involved in Protestant resistance in the worsening religious strife leading up to the Thirty Years’ War. Documents ranging from court ordinances, festival descriptions and servants registers, to courtly correspondences, juridical supplications and declarations have been consulted. This broad range of primary sources facilitates the investigation of the salience of gender difference both in the context of a courtly system heading a polity, as well as on the level of individual actors whose personhood was intricately entwined with their gendered identities. It is argued here that it is imperative to avoid a fragmentation within court studies into gender and women’s history on the one side and political approaches on the other, in order to maximise our understanding of the practice of power located at early modern courts. Gender difference complicated and further differentiated courtly status hierarchies and lent flexibility to increasingly rigid sets of dynastic rules about reproduction, succession, and etiquette, which had a beneficial impact on the longevity of the dynastic system.

Abrahamsson, Clara January 2018 (has links)
Emojis are colorful pictorial icons used in day to day conversations via SMS and on plenty of different platforms, available for everyone today, but not yet studied to an extent even though they they are highly ambigous. The aim of this study is to find which semantic meanings emojis can have, if gender or age is a causing factor and if any norm for when and how emojis should be used exists among the users. Through a digital survey uploaded on different platforms and sent to different companies, the results show that misconceptions do happen, and that they happen often. However, gender does not seem to matter to the same extent as age. There is also evidence pointing to the users following some rules when it comes to what emoji should be used when and when no emoji should be used at all.

Jämställdhet i undervisning : Lärarstudenters förhållningssätt till och jämställdhet inom planering och genomförande av undervisning / Gender equality in teaching : Teacher trainees’ approach to gender equality in the planning and implementation of teaching

Jonsson, Simon January 2018 (has links)
This essay aims to investigate the teacher trainees’ relation to gender equality and gender in education. The studie is based on surveys and interviews, where the results will be problematized based on feminist and gender theory.  The essay relies on three questions. The first question deals with how teacher trainees estimate their opportunity to work with gender equality and gender issues in their teaching, in accordance with the Swedish curriculum. The second and third question focuses on how teacher trainees believe they are given the right tools to work with issues of gender equality, as well if their personal opinions and interests effect their teaching about gender equality and gender.  The results show, that according to teaching trainees, the curriculum tends to provide opportunity for using an equality perspective in teaching. Furthermore it is revealed that the education has resulted in some tools for dealing with gender equality and gender issues. However it appears that they wish to have more tools which they can use to work with gender equality in their teaching. The final question deals with how teacher trainees’ own interests and personal opinions appear in their teaching. The analysis reveals that their own opinions could affect their teaching but that they always try to base their teaching on the values of the Swedish curriculum

Django, the story of a hero : A discourse analysis of postcolonial and gender theoretical power conditions in Quentin Tarantino’s movie Django Unchained.

Borglin, John January 2018 (has links)
The following study aims to analyze expressions of postcolonial and gender theoretical conditions of power in Quentin Tarantino’s film Django Unchained. The method of analysis is the one of discourse analysis. The analysis is used as a means to distinguish the expressions of value which will aim to depict the gender theoretical- and postcolonial structures of power the film mediates.  Furthermore, the results given by the analysis will be discussed in relation to creation of prosthetic memory. Considering the prosthetic memory’s impact on the viewers subjectivity, and outlook on both present and future values, the theory will adequately be discussed in relation to the representation this pop-cultural medium mediate. This study does not aim to analyze the historical authenticity of the film but rather to identify which postcolonial and gender theoretical values that are projected through the historical narrative. However, Django’s hero status will be discussed in relation with the mid-19th century American setting. As for the results of the analysis they were both in line with, and contradictive to, what the previous studies has shown. In correlation with the preceding studies the film did not seem to address the psychological issue of the different positions of power a slave could have. However, the position of Django was in fact a subject of problematization. The configuration of gender was less nuanced, which gave rise to a one-sided function and power stature for the depicted women of the film. In contrast to this, the power hieratical position for men were highly fluid and dependent on several factors.

The best you can get? The best you can get? : A quantitative content analysis that highlights differences in Gillette's marketing aimed at women and men from a gender perspective

Envall, Anna, Arvidsson, Jessica, Wallmenius, Elina, Kristoffersson, Nora January 2020 (has links)
The research question is as follows: Have Gillette chosen to market their products from a gender perspective and if so, what are those differences?   The purpose of the study is to compare the ways in which Gillette portrays the individual in their respective gender presentation. The theories used in this analysis come under the heading of  'gender theory' alongside 'feminist theory'. With these theories as a foundation this essay explores the differences between each Instagram account.   In order to depict a fair and balanced overview, a systematic random selection has been used for each account type. The sample for this study included 100 images from the female account and 100 images from the male account. The research question has been analyzed using specific variables with associative values, all of which are directly based on previous research and are linked to the original question. When the study was completed, a large portion of the results were consistent with existing research, with some exceptions.   In conclusion, the answer to the research question was; Yes, the individual accounts differ depending on which marketing group was targeted and it could be argued that Gillettes marketing is consistent with existing gender-related stereotypes of today’s society. However it is worth nothing that there were some occasions when the representations break from gender norms.

The man’s experiences of the father role as support for the nurse in child health care parental support : a literature study

Anderberg, Louise, Moser, Mimmi January 2019 (has links)
The father is central to the child´s development, but knowledge and understanding of the father´s experiences of his role are lacking. The purpose of this literature study was to explore and describe the man´s experiences of his role as a father to children under six years old. The study resulted in 13 qualitative articles where five themes emerged: dealing with biological differences, passing on masculinity, responsibility as a family provider and decision-maker, striving for equality and involvement, and emotional and practical connection. The result consists of articles from several different countries: Norway, USA, Canada, Ireland, Finland, Czech Republic, Thailand, Poland, Sweden and Ghana. The geographical place and context tend to be significance for the experience´s men have of the father role. Society requires awareness and openness to how different fathers experience their role, knowledge may also be of importance to students in various health care educations who may come to meet fathers in the child health care. Suggestions for continued research may be how same sex couples experience their parenting roles.

Osebergsgraven från person till objekt : En fallstudie om nya perspektiv på gamla tankar / The Osebergs ship from person to object : A case study about new perspectives on old thoughts

Johansson, Sofia January 2020 (has links)
This paper is a case study of the Viking Age ship burial from Oseberg, Norway. The aim of this paper is to use the concept of persona developed within rhetoric’s, and to investigate if it is possible to apply it on archaeological materials such as the Oseberg burial. The concept of persona as developed by Birgitte Mral is to identify strategies used by individuals to change their personality in order to enable themselves as a part of the public sphere. It is argued here that applying persona is a complement method to use in archeological research with a focus on gender. Although gender theory has previously been implemented on the Oseberg find, the history of its interpretations is still deeply influenced by the original interpretations put forward after the excavation in 1904. Therefore, a discussion based on analogies is conducted to evaluate the use of persona in gender archaeology in relation to other archeological interpretations of the Oseberg burial. The case study has introduced persona in an archeological context and used persona as a method and theoretical framework to gain new perspectives on how archaeologists can study the people in a grave rather than larger cultural events. The analysis based on analogies showed how persona can be used as a reflective tool as well as a theoretical framework.

Breaking Down Binaries : Gender Subversion in Olive Schreiner’s "Undine" and "The Story of an African Farm"

Van Biljon, Lana January 2020 (has links)
This study investigates a thus far neglected aspect of Olive Schreiner’s feminism, namely her subversion of Victorian gender models in her early novels, Undine and The Story of an African Farm. In order to determine what is being subverted a brief outline is first provided of the nature of traditional male and female Victorian gender characteristics; thereafter, the key arguments of Gender Theory are provided, the cornerstone of which is that gender is a social construct and not determined by biology. Analysis of Undine focusses on Schreiner’s eponymous heroine’s subversion of female gender roles, finding that Undine’s subversion is incomplete, due to her repeated lapses into conventional behaviour, seen mainly in her need to fulfil a role of service. In addition, details in Undine are linked to biographical aspects of Schreiner’s own life as many critics have made a link between Schreiner’s fiction and instances in her life. In The Story of an African Farm attention is given to both female and male gender subversion. Female gender subversion is analysed in the character Lyndall who deviates from accepted female characteristics of women as meek and docile, while discussion also focusses on her more conventional cousin, Em, who by acting as her foil, highlights Lyndall’s subversiveness. Although in comparison to Undine, Lyndall shows great progress in her ability to free herself from traditional roles for women, she remains held back by her inability to break free from the idea that service to something was an inherent part of women’s natures. Finally, Schreiner’s most radical work regarding gender is found in connection with her male characters, Gregory Rose and Waldo. While Schreiner shows the constructed nature of male gender models in her characterisation of Gregory who identifies more with the female gender, Waldo avoids gender categories completely, aligning himself with neither femininity nor masculinity, by finding an “escape” from these artificial social constructs in the natural world. / Dissertation (MA)--University of Pretoria, 2020. / English / MA / Unrestricted
