The role of Ivorian human rights non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in the pursuit of the right to development in Côte D'IvoireVahard, Patrice Ernest 02 1900 (has links)
This work is built on three pillars and seeks to contribute to the understanding
of the right to development (RtD) especially from the perspective of human rights
non-governmental organisations. First, the right to development, arguably one of the
most recent and controversial rights in the architecture of international human rights,
shapes the development paradigm in a manner that integrates civil, cultural,
economic, social, political and environmental rights of both individuals and groups
without distinction. Secondly, in general, social movements – including nongovernmental
organisations (NGOs) – play a crucial role as agents for change in any
democratic society. Africa, and within it Côte d’Ivoire, is no exception. Thirdly Côte d’Ivoire, an African country once heralded as a success story has been confronted
with an internal conflict with impacts which continue to be felt in the form of
increased poverty and insecurity. The country strives to resume peace, development
and stability but does not appear to have reached the end of the tunnel. The issues
confronting this country are similar to those identified by Former South African
President, Thabo Mbeki, and others to justify the promotion of the African
Renaissance as the vision to pursue. From the perspective of human rights law,
these issues are largely covered by the RtD. Therefore, can NGOs in Côte d’Ivoire
contribute meaningfully to addressing the challenges facing the country through the
pursuit of the RtD? This is the question at the heart of the present work.
This thesis establishes two main conclusions. First, in the current context of the
Côte d’Ivoire, a shift in focus towards the RtD will enable NGOs be part of the
solution to the multifaceted problems Côte d’Ivoire is seeking to overcome.
Secondly, no NGO currently has the requisite experience in working on the RtD in
Côte d’Ivoire. However, the structural reasons for this vacuum relate in the main to
knowledge and capacity. These can be addressed and recommendations are

The Student RAG Community Service (SRCS), a unique non-governmental organisation (NGO) of the Potchefstroom Campus of the North-West University, aims to support and to enable other NGOs to function independently. For this reason, the communication between the SRCS and these NGOs is viewed from the sub discipline of development communication, with the participative approach currently being perceived as the normative approach to communication for development.
Communication between the SRCS and representatives of the NGOs should therefore conform to the principles of the participative approach to development communication to contribute to empowerment and development. The principles of the participative approach that was identified as relevant to this study are participation, dialogue, cultural sensitivity, to enable the community to be self-reliant and community development.
This study is qualitative in nature and the research methods used to gather information about the nature of communication between the SRCS and the representatives of the projects are qualitative content analysis, partially structured interviews and observer–participant reporting.
Although this study has focused only on early child development projects, the nature of these projects and their communication varied to a large extent. The overall conclusion of this study is that there are gaps in the participative communication between the SRCS and the representatives of all the researched projects. The type of communication between the SRCS and early childhood development projects did not conform to the principles of cultural sensitivity, community development and the enablement of the community to be self-reliant. These gaps are attributed in part to the present documentation of the SRCS (2010 annual report, portfolio descriptions, transfer reports and minutes of 2010’s and 2011’s meetings) as well as the fact that this NGO’s training guidelines do not emphasise the importance of participatory principles, and do not offer sufficient training in the implementation of these principles to its various members.

The research explored unique performance enhancing or inhibiting factors
among Zimbabwean employees in non-profit organisations in Harare.
Two research questions were formulated: “Are there unique work ethics
inherent in employees in the non-profit sector?” The second research
question is “What unique variables motivate and affect workers in the nonprofit
sector?” The hypothesis assumed was that “the workplace performance
of employees in the non-profit sector is affected by and dependent on unique
factors that apply in the non-profit sector and not in profit sectors”.
The analysis of the research sample identified unique performance factors:
demotivation due to the absence of automatic promotions for high performing
employees; opportunities for the advancement of employees through a policy
of competitive recruitment and growth opportunities for local staff who can
apply for international positions within the organisation.
The hypothesis was accepted. The researcher recommended that non-profit
organisations use creative sector-specific approaches to motivate employee

The Paris Declaration - A Paradigm Shift At All Levels? : Swedish Non-Governmental Organisations' Roles in Development Aid PolicyPalmgren, Anna, Lundberg, Åsa January 2009 (has links)
In order to make development aid more efficient, a large number of donors, including Sweden, signed the so called Paris Declaration in 2005. The Declaration gives the partner countries more responsibility for their own development and aims to make he development aid provided by donor countries more measurable. It has been referred to as a paradigm shift within this policy area due to its far‐reaching goals. The Declaration has consequences for all actors in the development aid community, and this thesis aims at outlining and analyzing the effects of the Declaration on the Swedish non‐governmental organisations which hold a frame agreement with the Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA). As an increasing part of evelopment aid is being channelled through NGOs and they hold an important role in the area, they are interesting subjects of study. The analysis is conducted from a society‐centred governance perspective, which focuses on how different actors in society shape public policy. The perspective hallenges the view on the state as dominating unilaterally and takes into account the diversity of actors involved in policy‐making, such as NGOs. The result of the study is, among other things, that the character of the relationships and interactions between Swedish NGOs and SIDA varies, and can be described as either a more traditional hierarchical model or co‐governing. Furthermore, the Paris Declaration is perceived by the NGOs as being a step in the right direction rather than a paradigm shift at all level. / För att göra utvecklingsbistånd effektivare, undertecknade ett stort antal givare, däribland Sverige, den så kallade Parisdeklarationen 2005. Deklarationen ger samarbetsländerna ett större ansvar för sin egen utveckling och syftar till att göra biståndet från givarländerna mer mätbart. Man har kallat detta ett paradigmskifte inom området på grund av sina långtgående mål. Deklarationen har konsekvenser för alla aktörer inom området utvecklingsbistånd, och denna uppsats syftar till att beskriva och analysera de effekter som deklarationen har på de svenska icke‐statliga organisationer som har ett ramavtal med SIDA. Eftersom en allt större del av utvecklingsbiståndet kanaliseras genom enskilda organisationer och de innehar en viktig roll i området, är de intressanta att studera. Analysen görs utifrån ett samhällsorienterat governance perspektiv som fokuserar på hur olika aktörer i samhället utformar den offentliga politiken. Perspektivet utmaningar uppfattningen om att staten ensidigt dominerar och tar hänsyn till mångfalden av aktörer i det politiska beslutsfattandet, till exempel icke‐statliga organisationer. Resultaten av undersökningen är bland annat att karaktären av de relationer och interaktioner mellan svenska icke‐statliga organisationer och SIDA varierar, och kan beskrivas som traditionellt hierarkisk, eller samarbetsbaserad (co‐governing). Vidare uppfattas Parisdeklarationen av icke‐statliga organisationer som ett steg i rätt riktning, snarare än ett paradigmskifte på alla nivåer.

Main target of this master thesis is to determine ways of cooperation between Office for Social and Legal Protection of Children and nonprofit non-governmental organisations (NGOs) active in the same professional area in Ústí nad Labem and its surroundings. The paper introduces a case study aiming for deeper understanding of views and attitudes of workers from both institutions, their interconnectedness and interaction, identifying shortcomings and suggesting areas with potential of improvement. The theoretical framework consists of different typologies of government - NGOs relations, which are then applied to the context of the chosen location that represents a town with many socially excluded areas and other negative phenomena. This results in a specifically divided society and tense atmosphere in which both institutions operate as representatives of government and civil society.
