THE FUTURE OF DATA ACQUISITIONWexler, Marty 10 1900 (has links)
International Telemetering Conference Proceedings / October 26-29, 1998 / Town & Country Resort Hotel and Convention Center, San Diego, California / The necessity to acquire and analyze data dates back to the beginning of science itself. Long ago, a scientist may have run experiments and noted the results on a piece of paper. These notes became the data. The method was crude, but effective. As experiments got more complex, the need for better methodologies arose. Scientists began using computers to gather, analyze, and store the data. This method worked well for most types of data acquisition. As the amount of data being collected increased, larger computers, faster processors, and faster storage devices were used in order to keep up with the demand. This method was more refined, but still did not meet the needs of the scientific community. Requirements began to change in the data acquisition arena. More people wanted access to the data in real time. Companies producing large data acquisition systems began to move toward a network-based solution. This architecture featured a specialized computer called the server, which contained all of the data acquisition hardware. The server handled requests from multiple clients and handled the data flow to the network, data displays, and the archive medium. While this solution worked well to satisfy most requirements, it fell short in meeting others. The ability to have multiple computers working together across a local or wide area network (LAN or WAN) was not addressed. In addition, this architecture inherently had a single point of failure. If the server machine went down, all data from all sources was lost. Today, we see that the requirements for data acquisition systems include features only dreamed of five years ago. These new systems are linked around the world by wide area networks. They may include code to command satellites or handle 250 Mbps download rates. They must produce data for dozens of users at once, be customizable by the end user, and they must run on personal computers (PCs)! Systems like these cannot work using the traditional client/server model of the past. The data acquisition industry demands systems with far more features than were traditionally available. These systems must provide more reliability and interoperability, and be available at a fraction of the cost. To this end, we must use commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) computers that operate faster than the mainframe computers of only a decade ago. These computers must run software that is smart, reliable, scalable, and easy to use. All of these requirements can be met by a network of PCs running the Windows NT operating system.

A PC-BASED RF TEST CONSOLE FOR INTEGRATION & TEST ON NASA’S LUNAR PROSPECTOR SPACECRAFTLosik, Len 10 1900 (has links)
International Telemetering Conference Proceedings / October 27-30, 1997 / Riviera Hotel and Convention Center, Las Vegas, Nevada / Lunar Prospector’s project engineering staff selected a Windows PC platform as the RF test console for the Lunar Prospector spacecraft. The spacecraft test team chose the PCbased RF test console because the PC provides a low-cost, common platform with a graphical user interface. The PC provides point-and-click, menu-driven windows that are common throughout the satellite factory. The PC RF test console is being used to exercise the Lunar Prospector spacecraft RF link for RF commanding, telemetry, and ranging signals during factory test, including thermal vacuum chamber testing. For spacecraft command and control at the factory, the PC-based RF test console is networked to a UNIX workstation over RS-422. The PC RF test console and spacecraft interface are controlled through a coax switch residing in a test rack next to the workstation. The PC RF test console is connected directly to the Lunar Prospector spacecraft using coax cable through the spacecraft Telemetry, Commanding, & Ranging (TC&R) RF antenna hat for both transmit and receive functions. The PC RF test console is also connected hard-line to the spacecraft transponder through the transponder RS-422 connection. This connection provides the ability for spacecraft telemetry to be received at the PC at RF or baseband. The same hard-line spacecraft telemetry data is provided to the UNIX workstation for comparison. NASA’s Lunar Prospector project is the first of the Discovery series of “faster, better, cheaper” missions to be competitively awarded. Lunar Prospector project funding was capped by NASA to ensure that no overruns would occur. The mission was funded to support the scientific community’s desire to verify the presence of ice on the moon and collect environmental data to understand the dynamics that may have led to polar ice deposits. The Lunar Prospector mission received funding in 1996 with a launch planned for September 1997

Recent advances in immunology research have led us towards more promising approaches and strategies to manipulate the immune response to prevent or treat the diseases related to immune dysfunction such as autoimmune, inflammatory pathologies and malignant diseases. Although, immuno inflammation is a basal physiological phenomenon required to eliminate the causative agent and to initiate the healing process, it is a physiopathological symptom in a diverse conditions of infectious, autoimmune and tumoral origin. Various therapeutic strategies have been developed in order to reduce inflammation and pain, including the treatment with cytokine neutralizing antibodies, molecular antagonists, intravenous immunoglobulins, corticosteroids, non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID) and several others. In addition to these well known anti-inflammatory therapeutic strategies, treatment with various phytotherapeutics has also contributed enormously to control inflammation and pain, associated with various severe inflammatory disorders and cancer. Viscum album (VA) preparations, commonly known as European mistletoe, are extensively used as complementary therapy in cancer for decades. However the mechanisms of action have been partially understood. Several mutually non-exclusive mechanisms have been proposed such as anti-tumor properties which involve the cytotoxic properties, induction of apoptosis, inhibition of angiogenesis and several other immunomodulatory mechanisms. This study reveals anti-inflammatory mechanism as another important mechanism of action of these phytotherapeutics, which is responsible for their therapeutic benefit and addresses the molecular mechanisms in the pro-inflammatory axis of COX-2 and PGE2 using in vitro experimental model of human lung adenocarcinoma. The present work contributes for a better understanding of mechanisms of action of Viscum album preparations underlying their therapeutic benefit and allows us to revitalize the therapeutic strategies used in treatment of inflammatory disorders and cancer.

What is required in order to calculate when the automated user interface (GUI) testing is worthwhile?Vikström, Todd, Kaiser Löv, Sara January 2019 (has links)
ROI and break-even are available for calculating profits in operations, but it is difficult to know how these methods can be applied to automated GUI tests. By a conducted case study in which literature review, document studies, questionnaires and interviews have been used, it has been shown that these methods can be adapted to calculate the profits with automated GUI-tests. The disadvantages with these methods are that they are difficult to use unless the automation is made. There is a need for concrete data on, for example, the time taken for the execution of both manual and automated test cases. Although the methods can show that there are financial gains with automated GUI tests, there may be many other gains that cannot be identified by applying the methods. These intangible profits and losses have been identified in the work through interviews and surveys and the results are presented with a SWOT analysis. Several important intangible benefits such as increased quality and time savings have emerged. Some material losses have also come to light as it can be costly to introduce automated GUI tests. Even intangible losses have been identified, one of these is that it requires special skills to design and run the automated tests.

While Brazil has adopted SBTVD as its Digital Television standard, providing higher resolution, multiple channel feeds, mobile television and the promise of interactivity, there has been an explosive growth of the cell phone user base, as well as a dramatic increase in the usage of social networks and services on the internet that provide access to digital media such as TV, music, publishing and user generated content. The emergence of digital media has created a demand for the design of humancomputer interfaces allowing the interaction between users, searching, publishing and retrieving media content. Graphic designers once working on specific medias such as print, film and television have migrated to digital platforms becoming more and more involved in the design of virtual worlds and human computer interaction. As Digital TV converges with other media, user interface designers should consider the ubiquity of digital devices in the same room as an HDTV receiver, creating an experience where users can fluidly interact with multiple platforms and screens. Increasingly smartphones and other devices are connected to the internet, thus providing both a data return path and a secondary display that can extend the user interface enhancing the interaction with the TV. For several reasons, such as the lack of a return path and limited availability of Ginga middleware in converter boxes and digital sets, the launch of Interactive TV services has had a slow start in Brazil. By shifting the paradigm of interactivity from a vertical distribution model to a connected environment where users and viewers can share their experiences using multiple screens and devices, it is possible to design a new way to experience and interact with Digital TV. This thesis researches developments in interface design, digital TV technology and new media in order to subsidize the design of an interactive TV user experience. Drawing on audiovisual media and interactive content of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, the design of a user interface that integrates a smartphone with a DTV Receiver proposes a DTV interaction model for the 2014 World Cup.

Construction and realisation of measurement system in a radiation field of 10 standard suns.Makineni, Anil Kumar January 2012 (has links)
A measurement system is to be presented, which is used to obtain the I-V characteristics of a solar cell and to track its temperature during irra-diation before mounting it into a complete array/module. This project presents both the design and implementation of an Electronic load for testing the solar cell under field conditions of 10000 W/m^2, which is able to provide current versus voltage and power versus voltage charac-teristics of a solar cell using a software based model developed in Lab-VIEW. An efficient water cooling method which includes a heat pipe array system is also suggested. This thesis presents the maximum power tracking of a solar cell and the corresponding voltage and current values. In addition, the design of the clamp system provides an easy means of replacing the solar cell during testing. Keywords: Solar cell, Metal Oxide Semiconductor Field Effect Transistor (MOSFET), I-V characteristics, cooling system, solar cell clamp system, LabVIEW, Graphical User Interface (GUI).

The body concept intelligentsia of the Wei-Jin DynastyWang, Hsiu-Lin 14 August 2006 (has links)
Through the triple changes which include the variation in society, time and space, the intelligentsia in Wei and Jin Dynasties came to a realization that life is capricious. They combined the thought of Tze-Shi (carefree and footloose) and Gui-wuo (emphasize the unique value of oneself) together with the tolerance of physical desire and worship of nature to develop two theories: Zhong-shen (consider body as the foundation of all) and Le Sheng (carpe diem/seize the day), which remain the keynote of the viewpoint towards body in Wei and Jin Dynasties.
Wei and Jin Dynasties followed the theory of Chi-transformation in Han Dynasty, as well as the idea that form and spirit are one, and develop a complete viewpoint towards body which interprets body and mind as one unity. The Chi flows in the body and becomes the medium of body and mind, then goes outward to the relation between body and nature; human body itself forms a complete micro system, which, through the flow of emotion and Chi, echoes or responds with the macro system of nature.
The intelligentsia in Wei and Jin Dynasties considered etiquette and music as the embodiment of nature and human body as the territory where culture and nature are embodied. Kuo-Shian interpreted the relation between body, etiquette and music with the theory of Shi-Jai-Ti-Chung (ease and comfort within the body). Etiquette and music was made in a situation in which ¡§ease and comfort¡¨ are in harmony with body and also communicate with the heaven, earth and man in a way that ¡§ease and comfort¡¨ harmonize with the nature, and brings heaven, earth and man in concordance. When etiquette fails to bring ¡§ease and comfort¡¨ to the body, the intelligentsia used body as a tool to fight against the rigid etiquette, in order to arouse introspection over Li-Yuan-Zen-Ching (etiquette should be made with human beings as the first consideration, and eschews rigidity or affectation), and at the meantime brings reformation and feedback to the society. The intelligentsia¡¦s rising consciousness of selfhood and body makes the relation between body and society an active instead of a passive one.
The intelligentsia, while perceiving the change of society and understanding the fact that human nature is unalterable, were contented to remain the status as Chung-Zen (mediocrity, people who are between genius and fools), and pursuit the fulfillment of their dreams as well as the feeling of carefree. Those intelligentsia emphasized the value of themselves and preferred to be themselves while understanding completely the truth and limitation of life, and they responded changes of the society and time with the idea of Shi-Shin-An-Min (follow and accept your own nature, be contented).
