Performance Modeling, Design and Analysis of Transport Mechanisms in Integrated Heterogeneous Wireless Networks

Rutagemwa, Humphrey January 2007 (has links)
Recently, wireless access to Internet applications and services has attracted a lot of attention. However, there is no single wireless network that can meet all mobile users’ requirements. Con-sequently, integrated heterogeneous wireless networks are introduced to meet diverse wireless Internet applications and services requirements. On the other hand, integrated heterogeneous wireless networks pose new challenges to the design and development of reliable transport mechanisms. Wireless Application Protocol version 2 (WAP 2.0) is one of the promising trans-port mechanisms. It uses wireless profiled TCP (WP-TCP), which is fully compatible with TCP, as one of the reliable transport protocols to cope with the wireless link impairments. For WAP 2.0 to continue providing reliable and efficient transport services in the future, one of the key is-sues is to thoroughly study, understand, and improve its performance in integrated heterogeneous wireless networks. In this thesis, we develop analytical frameworks and propose a solution to respectively study and improve the performance of WP-TCP in integrated heterogeneous wireless networks. Spe-cifically, we consider WP-TCP short- and long-lived flows over integrated wireless local area network (WLAN) and wireless wide area network (WWAN), where WLAN can be static or mo-bile. In order to facilitate the analysis of WP-TCP performance in integrated WLAN and WWAN, we first construct a novel WLAN link model, which captures the impact of both uncor-related and correlated transmission errors, and derive mathematical expressions that describe packet loss probability and packet loss burst length over WWAN-WLAN link. Then, we develop analytical frameworks for studying the performance of WP-TCP short- and long-lived flows. Differently from those reported in the literature, our analytical framework for WP-TCP short-lived flows takes into account both correlated and uncorrelated packet losses. Furthermore, our analytical framework for long-lived flow can be used to study the short-term (during vertical handover) and long-term performances of WP-TCP and it captures the effects of vertical handover, such as excessive packet losses and sudden change in network characteristics, which are commonly experienced in integrated static WLAN and WWAN. By using the devel-oped analytical frameworks, we extensively analyze the performance of WP-TCP flows and in-vestigate the optimal protocol design parameters over a wide range of network conditions. Finally, based on our analytical studies, we propose a receiver-centric loosely coupled cross-layer design along with two proactive schemes, which significantly improve the vertical hand-over performance. The proposed solution is easy to implement and deploy, compatible with tra-ditional TCP, and robust in the absence of cross-layer information. Extensive simulations have been conducted to confirm the effectiveness and practicability of our schemes.

Ζαφειρόπουλος, Διονύσης 27 August 2009 (has links)
In this thesis, an effort of presenting the technological landscape of the telecommunication market takes place, with focus on the interoperability between the Mobile Telephony Networks and the Wireless Data Networks and the relative changes that have evolved through this interoperability, both regarding the provided services and the applied business models by the enterprises of the specific market. Within the frames of this effort, a detailed recording of technological developments is realised, in terms of technical specifications and standards, in the two aforementioned categories of networks, so as to conclude to those standards that are utilized by the next generation networks (4G) which will be: • Networks that will be unified so as the different technological platforms will function smoothly. • Networks that will be characterized by low cost of deployment. • The end user will be continuously connected with a wireless access network, enjoying the preferred services anywhere and anytime. The master thesis structure follows the aforementioned methodology. The 1st Chapter includes a short presentation of expected results, both in terms of technologies and services for next generation networks, which we usually refer to as 4G networks (4th Generation) or B3G networks (Beyond 3G) or finally as All - IP wireless networks (AIPN). In the 2nd Chapter, a detailed presentation of Mobile Telephony Networks takes place, from their first versions (1G) until the most modern (3.5G) that have been presented up to today. The analysis includes both the various generations of networks and the used standards, in terms of modulation and multiplexing techniques. The rest of the chapter focuses on the technical description of the prevailing networks, GSM, GPRS and UMTS, while the chapter ends with a short description of intersystem handover processes between GSM and UMTS. Τhe 3rd Chapter, includes an extensive description of the Wireless Data Networks standards such as: IEEE 802.15 Wireless Personal Area Networks (WPANs) with main representatives networks based on Bluetooth and IrDA, standard IEEE 802.11 Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs) mainly represented by WiFi and HyperLan/2, IEEE 802.16 Wireless Metropolitan Area Networks (WMANs) standard, widely known as WiMax and finally the IEEE 802.20 Wireless Wide Area Networks (WWANs) standard, namely Mobile Broadband Wireless Access (MWBA) that is still under development and aspires to constitutes the wireless version of the xDSL technology, since it aims to provide wireless broadband services. In the 4th Chapter methodologies for integrating the two types of networks, are presented along with examples of interoperability between GPRS / UMTS and WLANs or between UMTS and WiMAX. Extensive discussion around the problems that should be faced, as the guarantee of bearable QoS level, the mechanisms for handover between the networks and the management of mobility of users and terminals, is held. Moreover, examples of integrated networks with both loose and tight coupling methodologies are presented. The last section of the chapter concerns a detailed description of architectures for interconnecting heterogeneous wireless networks over IP – based backhaul networks, namely All – IP networks, with special focus on policy based handover mechanisms and techniques for managing micromobility and macromobility issues. The 5th Chapter concerns the changes taking place in the telecommunications market deriving from the technological progress in the subject of heterogeneous wireless networks interconnection. New service packets are created, as a result of new business plans that are drawn up by the big telecommunications organizations. Finally, we present the developments in the Greek market and subsidised projects from Information Society AE, via which wireless networks have been materialised, with aim to promote Broadband Services.

Nguyen, Van Minh 20 June 2011 (has links) (PDF)

Hernane, Soumeya 20 June 2013 (has links) (PDF)

A vertical handoff mechanism in heterogeneous wireless network

Chuang, Sen Chu Unknown Date (has links)
In this paper, we propose a terminal –control scheme to avoid unnecessary vertical handovers between 3G cellular and WLAN hotspots. The proposed algorithm is a fuzzy logic based algorithm that can adapt itself to the dynamic conditions of the hybrid networks. The scheme can reduce the access delay, unnecessary handoff probability and aid the handoff decision for better connectivity. This handoff algorithm has much better performance than conventional algorithms and can be extended to other heterogeneous networks.

Anestesi- och intensivvårdssjuksköterskors upplevelser av överrapportering av postoperativa patienter / Certified registered nurse anaesthetist andcritical care nurses experiences of thepatient handover in a postoperative care unit

Arvidsson, Jennie, Selström, Emelie January 2018 (has links)

Prediction of Inter-Frequency Measurements in a LTE Network with Deep Learning / Prediktering av inter-frekvensmätningar i ett LTE-nätverk med Deep Learning

Holm, Rasmus January 2018 (has links)
The telecommunications industry faces difficult challenges as more and more devices communicate over the internet. A telecommunications network is a complex system with many parts and some are candidates for further automation. We have focused on interfrequency measurements that are used during inter-frequency handovers, among other procedures. A handover is the procedure when for instance a phone changes the base station it communicates with and the inter-frequency measurements are rather expensive to perform. More specifically, we have investigated the possibility of using deep learning—an ever expanding field in machine learning—for predicting inter-frequency measurements in a Long Term Evolution (LTE) network. We have focused on the multi-layer perceptron and extended it with (variational) autoencoders or modified it through dropout such that it approximate the predictive distribution of a Gaussian process. The telecommunications network consist of many cells and each cell gather its own data. One of the strengths of deep learning models is that they usually increase their performance as more and more data is used. We have investigated whether we do see an increase in performance if we combine data from multiple cells and the results show that this is not necessarily the case. The performances are comparable between models trained on combined data from multiple cells and models trained on data from individual cells. We can expect the multi-layer perceptron to perform better than a linear regression model. The best performing multi-layer perceptron architectures have been rather shallow, 1-2 hidden layers, and the extensions/modifications we have used/done have not shown any significant improvements to warrant their presence. For the particular LTE network we have worked with we would recommend to use shallow multi-layer perceptron architectures as far as deep learning models are concerned.

PŘÍNOS A PŘEKÁŽKY V PŘEDÁVÁNÍ HLÁŠENÍ SESTRAMI U LŮŽKA PACIENTŮ / Benefits and barriers to the transfer of information nurses at the bedside of patients.

MERUNKOVÁ, Michaela January 2012 (has links)
The nursing handover report belongs to everyday activities of nurses. In the work of a nurse it is important to know exactly who, when, where, what and how. This is what the following activity and responsibilities of the duty period are derived from. This diploma thesis, focused on the Nursing Handover Report at a Patient´s Bedside, has a theoretical and practical part. The first, theoretical part, is composed of three chapters, the modern trend of nursing, the nursing report and legislation. The second, practical part, is based on quantitative and qualitative surveys with three defined objectives and four hypotheses. The first objective was to determine what nurses regard as a major contribution of the nursing handover report at a patient´s bedside. The second objective was to define the greatest obstacle in the nursing handover report at a patient´s bedside. The third objective was assessing the patients´ attitude towards the nursing handover report at their bedside. All three objectives were met by the research. The qualitative part of this diploma work was based on a conducted kvasiexperiment and subsequent questions for patients and nurses. The research sample was 5 nurses and 5 patients from the intermediate care unit (IMCU) and 5 nurses and 5 patients from the resuscitation station (RES) of the České Budějovice hospital, PLC. The semi-structured interview consisted of six to eight questions, surveying the feelings, contents, visualization, integration, advantages, disadvantages, departments, nursing handover at the bedside and the quality. The data collection was carried out by means of an anonymous questionnaire designed for nurses to find out how nurses hand the report over or how they would like to hand it over. 303 nurses from the České Budějovice Hospital, PLC, and the Příbram Hospital, PLC, took part in the research. The results were used to confirm or to reject the hypotheses. The first hypothesis: Nurses do not consider an oral handover report as a quality one when done without a visual completion, this has not been confirmed by the investigation. The second hypothesis: In terms of the risk of the patient's damage, the quality of the handover report done by the nurses in the IMCU and the RES is better than that done by the nurses in a standard unit, this has been confirmed. The third hypothesis: Nurses consider the time consuming nature of the handover report at the patient´s bedside as the greatest difficulty, this has not been confirmed. The fourth and last hypothesis: Patients have a positive attitude towards the nursing handover report at the bedside, this has been confirmed by the research. The output of this thesis is to suggest a standard for the nursing handover report at a patient´s bedside. The results can be used for nursing managers, deputy directors of nursing, medical students and nursing professionals.

Patienters och sjuksköterskors upplevelser av bedsiderapportering : En systematisk litteraturöversikt / Patients' and nurses' experiences of bedside reports : A systematic overview of the literature

Söderpalm, Emma, Öreberg, Matilda January 2021 (has links)
Background: Shift reporting is an essential part of the nurse’s clinical work, despite this there is no consensus about what constitutes best practice. As personcentredness is becoming more important, more focus is on the patients’ right to participation and shared decision-making, and bedside reporting has become an alternative to the traditional shift report. Aim: To illustrate how nurses and adult inpatients within the somatic care describe their experience of bedside handover. Method: This literature review was conducted through a simplified meta-synthesis approach based on qualitative content analysis as a tool for the analysis of data. Results: Three main themes regarding patients’ experiences of bedside handover emerged: patient participation, improved care experience and possible barriers. Three additional main themes regarding nurses’ experiences emerged: perceived advantages, possible barriers and enabling factors for bedside handover. Both patients and nurses reported positive experiences of bedside handover, with the foremost advantage being the patients’ involvement in their care. Patients described an increased feeling of safety and that their needs of information were met. Nurses described how patient safety was improved and how prioritization was facilitated. Both nurses and patients had concerns about confidentiality and sensitive information. Conclusion: Bedside handover can be used as a valuable tool in the work towards a more person centred care, but there is a need for further knowledge about how confidentiality can be managed.
