La Belle au Bois Dormant (The Sleeping Beauty) Tchaikovsky-Pletnev and Stravinsky's Petrouchka: a study of piano transcriptions comprising performances and analyses.

As the costs for mounting opera, ballet and orchestral concerts rise and as their audiences dwindle, piano transcriptions of works orchestrated for such concerts can be a viable way of disseminating the music more widely than if the music was presented only in its original form. With this in mind, it can be argued that piano transcriptions of music originally written for instrumental ensemble is still a viable form of musical expression, because the piano is still the most widely used medium for the performance of art music in the Western world. Transcriptions of instrumental and vocal music expand the listening audience for a composer's music while they also increase the repertoire of music for the piano for both amateurs and professionals. The CD recording has the aim of providing a reference on which to base an appreciation of Pletnev's work. As the orchestral score is quite well known, the differentiation created by Pletnev, and the quality of his work, can be immediately perceived by hearing the execution of his scores and being able to cross reference his reductions with the original score. Timing references for the piano score have been included to further facilitate this cross-referencing. This thesis comprises two parts: 1. A performance CD of Stravinsky's Petrouchka (1922 piano four-hand version) and Tchaikovsky's Sleeping Beauty (1999 solo piano transcription by Mikhail Pletnev). This accounts for 75% of the thesis. 2. An exegesis, analysing selected portions of the orchestral score of Tchaikovsky's The Sleeping Beauty Op.66 and Pletnev's piano transcription suite, prefaced by an overview of piano transcriptions from Liszt to Pletnev. This accounts for 25% of the thesis. The exegesis argues that, while seeking to recreate the colour and drama of Tchaikovsky's orchestral score within the context of a virtuosic piano solo, Pletnev has managed to transcribe Tchaikovsky's score faithfully with minimal alterations.

Isocrate et Confucius entreprennent d’abord l’éducation de la vertu puis préparent à une vie harmonieuse, ils demandent principalement aux disciples de se perfectionner. De plus, les deux maîtres ont chacun leur propre ambition de l’enseignement : Isocrate a l’intention de cultiver le rhéteur accompli, afin de faire savoir aux disciples la réflexion à propos de la méthode philosophique de « doxa » pour rechercher la vérité, de persuader et de guider moralement ses auditeurs, de contribuer au service de la Grèce. Pour Confucius, il introduit l’idéal du « Jun Zi » qui est le standard de la vertu et de la perfection humaines, qui respecte les rites anciens, agit avec les qualités de Ren et du juste milieu et recherche aussi la voie harmonieuse entre les êtres humains et l’Univers. La sagesse d’Isocrate et de Confucius poussent davantage la société de leur époque vers la paix et vers le bonheur. Isocrate offre l’idée de la diffusion des valeurs athéniennes dans toute la Grèce et Confucius engage transmettre les rites de Zhou et forme le fondement de la civilisation traditionnelle chinoise—le confucianisme. Cependant, aujourd’hui, l’influence des deux Maîtres demeure différente : Isocrate n’est pas autant étudié que Confucius. De toute façon, les deux grands Sages contribuent à l’éducation des êtres humains : soit dans le domaine de la rhétorique, soit dans la recherche de sagesse, et laissent aux gens d’aujourd’hui des inspirations importantes à l’humanité, ils méritent d’être respectés et considérés comme auteurs d’un héritage important. / Both Isocrates and Confucius attached first importance to ethics education and then to harmony education. They required especially their disciples to attain self-improvement spiritually. In particular, the two greatmasters also put forward their unique teaching objectives respectively. Isocrates hoped to train perfect rhetoricians, let them grasp "doxa"--the philosophical method of meditation, to seek the truth, and use their moralorations to persuade and lead the audience to eventually devote the public to serving the Greek cause. Confucius hoped to cultivate an image of"gentleman", who was not only a perfect human moral standard, but also anobserver of etiquette, a follower of benevolence and the doctrine of the mean,and an explorer to follow the path to the harmony of human and the universe. The wisdom of Isocrates and Confucius greatly promoted the pace of progress of social peace and the happiness of the general public in their respective times. Isocrates introduced the concept of "Greek" (Hellenisation) for the entire Greek territory while Confucius advocated to restore rites andlaid the foundation for the traditional Chinese culture, Confucianism. But their influence today varies greatly: Isocrates has not been inherited and researched as much as Confucius. In a word, these two great sages have made remarkable contributions to human kind with Isocrates in rhetorics and Confucius in humanistic wisdom. They have all left us modern people humanistic spirit of enlightenment. They are worthy of being respected and inherited.

The aural development process is governed by the attitude of the teacher, student, the time factor, methodology employed and materials available. This process and the aforementioned contributing factors are explored within the context of the current requirements of the aural and practical musicianship examination syllabi of The Royal Schools of Music, Trinity College and UNISA. Suitable methods are explored which should develop skills enabling the student to deal with sounds and their corresponding symbols, first in isolation then within a musical context with attention to the curriculum, musical skills and personal development of the student within a positive learning situation. Four main areas of development are isolated i.e. rhythm, pitch, harmony and critical ear skills. A idéia de embutimento (ou encaixamento) de um novo ser dentro do seu progenitor, defendida pela teoria pré-formacionista, traz como que um exemplo do mundo monádico leibniziano, no qual todos os acontecimentos futuros, inclusive a geração de novos seres, foram já estabelecidos por Deus no momento da criação. As investigações microscópicas desenvolvidas por biólogos da época, especialmente por Leeuwenhoeck, descrevem um mundo até então desconhecido e trazem uma comprovação experimental da concepção teórica leibniziana. / Coming from the Leibniz`s system and taking as thread the question of the generation of the life, we intend to indicate the philosophical reasons that had taken Leibniz to support the preformationist biologists from the 17th century. The idea of inlaying (or fitting) of a new being into its ancestor, defended by the preformationist theory, brings an example about Leibniz`s monads world, in which all the future events, also the generation of new beings, already had been established by God at the moment of the creation. Microscopic researches developed by biologists at this time, especially by Leeuwenhoek, describe an unknown world until then, and bring an experimental evidence of Leibniz`s theoretical conception.

Na presente tese é resolvida a equação de difusão de nêutrons estacionária, bem como problemas de cinética, em geometria unidimensional cartesiana multi-região considerando o modelo de multigrupos de energia. Um dos objetivos e inovação neste trabalho é a obtenção de uma solução aproximada com estimativa de erro, controle de precisão e na forma de uma expressão analítica. Com esse tipo de solução não há a necessidade de recorrer a esquemas de interpolação, geralmente necessários em caso de discretizações do domínio. O fluxo de nêutrons é expandido em uma série de Taylor cujos coeficientes são encontrados utilizando a equação diferencial e as condições de contorno e interface. O domínio é dividido em várias células, cujo tamanho e o grau do polinômio são ajustáveis de acordo com a precisão requerida. Para resolver o problema de autovalor é utilizado o método da potência. A metodologia é aplicada em um benchmark que consiste na solução da equação de difusão como condição inicial e na solução de problemas de cinética para diferentes transientes. Os resultados são comparados com sucesso com resultados da literatura. A convergência da série é garantida pela aplicação de um raciocínio baseado no critério de Lipschitz para funções contínuas. Cabe ressaltar que a solução obtida, em conjunto com a análise da convergência, mostra a solidez e a precisão dessa metodologia. / In the present dissertation the one-dimensional neutron diffusion equation for stationary and kinetic problems in a multi-layer slab has been solved considering the multi-group energy model. One of the objectives and innovation in this work is to obtain an approximate solution with error estimation, accuracy control and in the form of an analytical expression. With this solution there is no need for interpolation schemes, which are usually needed in case of discretization of the domain. The neutron flux is expanded in a Taylor series whose coefficients are found using the differential equation and the boundary and interface conditions. The domain is divided into several layers, whose size and the polynomial order can be adjusted according to the required accuracy. To solve the eigenvalue problem the conventional power method has been used. The methodology is applied in a benchmark problem consisting of the solution of the diffusion equation as an initial condition and solving kinetic problems for different transients. The results are compared successfully with the ones in the literature. The convergence of the series is guaranteed by applying a criterion based on the Lipschitz criterion for continuous functions. Note that the solution obtained, together with the convergence analysis, shows the robustness and accuracy of this methodology.

Atenta a categorias poéticas em uso no fim do século XIX, esta dissertação de mestrado estuda algumas das escolhas efetuadas pelo poeta nicaragüense Rubén Darío (1867-1916) na busca de satisfazer e, ao mesmo tempo, alargar as exigências diversas de seus leitores contemporâneos. Identificam-se o artifício e a versatilidade como elementos fundamentais pelos quais o poeta obteve o apreço de seu público. O capítulo I expõe brevemente o estado atual da recepção à poesia de Darío para, então, investigar as origens do processo de constituição histórica de sua autoridade poética, ocupando-se sobretudo de algumas questões que nortearam a sua primeira recepção tanto na América como na Europa. No capítulo II, estudam-se duas categorias relevantes para uma compreensão histórica dessa poesia: elegância (preceito representativo adequado à inserção da poesia nas práticas cultas e ultracivilizadas do fim do século XIX) e harmonia (elemento de estilo que operava não só no nível fônico, na beleza sonora, como também na sintaxe, na metáfora, na métrica, na versificação, na escolha dos temas e assuntos etc.). No capítulo III, a análise de poemas selecionados procura demonstrar a pertinência do recorte proposto pela identificação de usos da elegância e da harmonia em três gêneros diversos praticados por Darío: o elogio, a epístola em verso e as \"visões\", relacionadas mais intimamente com a poética chamada simbolista. O capítulo IV aborda criticamente a noção de musicalidade, buscando ampliá-la para explicar uma série de procedimentos e técnicas pelas quais se poderão diferenciar com mais clareza as escolhas autorais e os elementos comuns às poéticas vigentes em seu tempo. / Taking into account the poetical categories in use at the end of the 19th century, this dissertation examines some of the options chosen and worked by the Nicaraguan poet Rubén Darío (1867-1916) in order to satisfy and, at the same time, expand the diverse demands of his contemporary readers. We have centered upon artifice and versatility as key elements by which the poet managed to receive his public\'s applause. Chapter I begins with the current state of the reception of Darío\'s poetry in order to investigate the origins of the process of a historical constitution of his poetical authority, focusing mainly on certain issues which lay on the base of his first reception in America as well as in Europe. In chapter II, we have studied two relevant categories for a historical comprehension of this poetry: elegance (a representative precept appropriate to the insertion of poetry into the refined and ultra-civilized practices of the late 1800s) and harmony (an element of style which operated not only for the phonic level of poetry, for the sonorous beauty, but also for syntax, for metaphor, metrics, versification, choice of themes and subjects, etc.). In chapter III, the analysis of selected poems aims at unveiling the relevance of our methodology through identifying the uses of elegance and harmony in three diverse genres practiced by Darío: the laudatory, the epistles in verse, and the \"visions\", related more closely to the poetics called by the name of \"symbolist\". Chapter IV deals critically with the notion of musicality, expanding it in order to explain a series of procedures and techniques through which we are able to differentiate more clearly between personal choices and the elements which were common to the poetical practices of the poet\'s time.
