The infinitude of beauty as expression of the beauty of the infinite? : a critical evaluation of the use of the analogia entis in the theological aesthetics of David Bentley HartHavenga, Marnus 04 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MTh)--Stellenbosch University, 2014. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The purpose of this study is to investigate if American Orthodox theologian David
Bentley Hart's use of the classical Thomistic principle of the analogia entis (in his
monograph The Beauty of the Infinite: The Aesthetics of Christian Truth), can be
deemed to be a valid, responsible and beneficial manner of affirming a continuity
between the beauty of God and the beauty of creation, and opposing the
seemingly problematic worldview of dualism.
After reviewing a selection of works in the field of theological aesthetics, this study
is conducted both as a historical analysis and a systematic exposition on the
analogia entis, by critically examining the use (and critique) of analogy and the
analogy of being in Greek (Aristotle), Scholastic (Thomas Aquinas) and 20th
century thought (Erich Przywara, Karl Barth and Hans Urs von Balthasar), before
inspecting and ultimately affirming David Bentley Hart’s own use thereof (in
regards to the beauty of God and the beauty of creation).
beginsel van die analogia entis (in sy monografie The Beauty of the Infinite: The
Aesthetics of Christian Truth) as geldige, verantwoordelike en voordelige wyse

Implied constitutional principlesZhou, Han-Ru January 2012 (has links)
This thesis challenges some of the current limits to the grounds for judicial review of legislation accepted by most Canadian jurists. More specifically, it makes a common law-based argument in favour of the priority over legislation of principles which are implied from the Imperial Constitution Acts 1867-1982 and which originally derive from the English constitution – namely implied constitutional principles. The argument faces two main interrelated legal objections: Parliamentary sovereignty and the Framers’ intentions. The first objection is rebutted by arguing that Parliamentary sovereignty possesses an ability to change in a way that can incorporate substantive legal limitations. The most prevalent common law-based theories of change to Parliamentary sovereignty suggest that the courts can authoritatively determine if implied constitutional principles can check legislation. The second objection is rebutted by reference to the notion of progressive interpretation as conceived under Hartian and Dworkinian theories of law and adjudication. Under these theories, progressive interpretation is an aspect of the courts’ best overall interpretation of the constitution, which includes implied constitutional principles. Such progressive interpretation can result in these principles constraining legislative authority. Justification of the progressive interpretation of implied constitutional principles can be based on the rule of law from which derive a number of these principles. One plausible conception of the Canadian rule of law is that it rejects the view that implied constitutional principles can prevail when in conflict with legislation. However, the better conception is that, as an attempt to adapt implied constitutional principles to relevant changes in society and to protect their underlying values, the judiciary should interpret these principles as capable of checking legislation to the extent that they form part of the core content of the rule of law. Such a conception and an operation of implied constitutional principles can properly be explained by Hartian or Dworkinian common law-based progressive interpretation of these principles and by their relationship with legislative authority.

Algorithms for the satisfiability problemRolf, Daniel 22 November 2006 (has links)
This work deals with worst-case algorithms for the satisfiability problem regarding boolean formulas in conjunctive normal form. The main part of this work consists of the analysis of the running time of three different algorithms, two for 3-SAT and one for Unique-k-SAT. We establish a randomized algorithm that finds a satisfying assignment for a satisfiable 3-CNF formula G on n variables in O(1.32793^n) expected running time. The algorithm is based on the analysis of so-called strings, which are sequences of clauses of size three, whereby non-succeeding clauses do not share a variable, and succeeding clauses share one or two variables. If there are not many strings, it is likely that we already encounter a solution of G while searching for strings. In 1999, Schöning proved a bound of O(1.3334^n) for 3-SAT. If there are many strings, we use them to improve the running time of Schöning''s algorithm. Furthermore, we derandomize the PPSZ algorithm for Unique-k-SAT. The PPSZ algorithm presented by Paturi, Pudlak, Saks, and Zane in 1998 has the feature that the solution of a uniquely satisfiable 3-CNF formula can be found in expected running time at most O(1.3071^n). In general, we will obtain a derandomized version of the algorithm for Unique-k-SAT that has essentially the same bound as the randomized version. This settles the currently best known deterministic worst-case bound for the Unique-k-SAT problem. We apply the `Method of Small Sample Spaces'' in order to derandomize the algorithm. Finally, we improve the bound for the algorithm of Iwama and Tamaki to get the currently best known randomized worst-case bound for the 3-SAT problem of O(1.32216^n). In 2003 Iwama and Tamaki combined Schöning''s and the PPSZ algorithm to yield an O(1.3238^n) bound. We tweak the bound for the PPSZ algorithm to get a slightly better contribution to the combined algorithm.

?nico e implica a interpreta??o, a compreens?o e a aplica??o do direito.

Tuning out the troubles in southern Ireland : revisionist history, censorship and problematic ProtestantsMeehan, Niall January 2015 (has links)
This thesis is an examination of the influence and impact of the ‘Troubles’ in Northern Ireland, post 1968, on the practice of Irish history, on southern Irish broadcast media and on the southern Irish modernisation process. I will examine the uneasy and contested transition in systems of hegemony in a society where the state is not coterminous with perceptions of nationhood, where society is anxiously suspended between conservation of its existence and popular nationalist aspirations, where southern economic dependency interacted uneasily with northern political instability and sectarianism. The thesis examines the ‘Ulsterisation’ of the War of Independence by some historians and its aftermath as an ideological project. It pays particular attention, using the case-study method, to the imposition of a sectarian character on republican forces during the war of independence by the highly influential Newfoundland historian Peter Hart, and will explain why this research is ideologically problematic within Irish historiography. I will link this to (in a second case-study) the project undertaken in the early 1970s by Irish government minister (also an academic historian and political scientist) Conor Cruise O’Brien to undermine and eradicate from popular awareness secular anti-imperialist aspects of Irish nationalist consciousness, primarily through, in case-study three, the imposition of broadcasting censorship and support for repression. I question O’Brien’s positing of a ‘Catholic nationalism’ as an overarching basis for Irish statehood by, in case-study four, an examination the largely unexplored socio-economic position of Protestants in southern Ireland and the forms of social control imposed on and within that community. The thesis examines how official reaction to the conflict combined repression and broadcasting censorship during the 1970s to revise popular perceptions of Irish history and Irish society. Control of understanding of the present was combined with attempts to take control of perceptions of the past, in order to circumscribe the parameters of what is feasible in the present, so as to preserve the socio-economic status quo. It specifically explores the impact of the post 1968 Northern Ireland conflict on: • The attempt by proponents of Irish revisionist historiography to portray Irish resistance to British rule as ‘Catholic nationalism’ and as a mirror image generally of Ulster unionist sectarianism; in the context of • The simultaneous transformational change of economic direction in the southern Irish economy and society, which imparted to this project increased impetus, opportunity and political scope.

Admiral Thomas C. Hart And The Demise Of The Asiatic Fleet 1941 – 1942DuBois, David 01 May 2014 (has links)
Admiral Thomas C. Hart And The Demise Of The Asiatic Fleet 1941 – 1942 is a chronicle of the opening days of World War II in the Pacific and the demise of the U.S. Navy’s Asiatic Fleet. Beginning with the background of Four Star Admiral Thomas Hart, this chronicle shows the history of the nearly obsolete ships that fought in the beginning of World War II. The reader will come to realize how and why this fleet ceased to exist within ninety days from the start of the war. Historical evidence will show that the damage inflicted on the Japanese was much greater than what was recorded in popular history. Hart was relieved of his command due to political considerations but not a single ship was lost while he was in command of the Asiatic Fleet. Hart fulfilled his orders to preserve the integrity and safety of the American Asiatic Fleet.

An Evaluation of the 1990-1991 Hart County Preschool ProgramBowman, Rhonda 01 June 1993 (has links)
In the 1990-91 school year. Kentucky's public schools received a mandate to begin a preschool program to aid children who were at risk of school failure. Children to be served were three-and four-year-olds qualifying for free lunch or having handicaps.
This study is an evaluation of the preschool program in Hart County Kentucky. Two concerns were identified. These concerns were: (1) identifying teacher and parental perceptions of the program and (2) measuring student academic gains. The results of the evaluation indicate that teachers and parents have a positive attitude about the preschool program. Students participating in the program showed greater achievement gains when compared to a control group of students who did not participate in the program.

Ethnic passing across the Jewish literary diasporaKatsnelson, Anna 25 January 2012 (has links)
In my dissertation, I examine the works of six writers (George S. Kaufman, Moss Hart, Clarice and Elisa Lispector, Evgenia Ginzburg and Vasilii Aksyonov) who did not explore their Jewish identity in their texts and were subsequently left out of the canons of Jewish literature in their respective countries. My goal is to recalibrate the concept of the Jewish canon from the charged notion of identity to a theory of shared thematic material in which the works of hyphenated Jewish writers will be considered under the category of ‘Jewish American, Brazilian, or Russian’ if they share definite attributes. This was a transnational study showing that similar forces were at work not only in one country, but across continents, affecting the sensibilities of Jewish writers in remarkably similar ways. On a larger scale their de-thematized narratives share thematic tropes and belong to a ‘minor, liminal, marginal narrative,’ a narrative which attempted to work within the scope of the master narratives produced by the hegemonic culture. I have claimed that even though these six writers did not thematize identity in their texts, because of the negative political and social situation for the Jew in the first half of the twentieth century in western civilization, this situation and the writers’ own alterity produced similar and overlapping narratives. / text
