Hermann Broch (1886-1951), penseur du dialogue et de l'altérité / Hermann Broch ( 1886-1951 ), thinker of dialogue and alterity

Gani, Djéhanne 29 November 2013 (has links)
In a context marked by anti-semitism and totalitarianism, Broch develops an anthropology of responsibility that denounces individualism and indifference, both of which represent a danger for humanity and democracy. Broch depicts the crisis of the modern world. However, beyond analysis, his reflections have above all a practical aim. He reveals the common place dangers and follies of humanity in a world deprived of sense and of indifference to others. He proposes a code of ethics in which dialogue with others, as with oneself and one's past, is indispensable for a responsible conscience. Responsibility is at the heart of the human conscience and of the capacity to live together with others. Broch advocates, in fact, an active responsibility that is turned towards others and towards the future. Animal nature is embodied within oneself and leads an internal battle. Human behavior rises out of the “talents and duties of man” because alterity is the risk of humanity, that one could lose one's humanity. The sensitivity towards others, present in every man, therefore constitutes the possibility of losing one's humanity and of descending into animality. This is inscribed in the nature of man. The notions of dialogue and alterity are multidisciplinary : they are at the intersection of literary, historical, philosophical, and psychological questions. They present the whole work of Broch by articulating polysemously different aspects, escaping a binary logic and elucidating his moral and political project.

\"Impaciência do conhecimento\": aproximações aos Sonâmbulos de Hermann Broch / \"Impatience of knowledge\": approximations to The Sleepwalkers by Hermann Broch

Daniel Reizinger Bonomo 15 March 2013 (has links)
This research is devoted to Herman Brochs trilogy The sleepwalkers. The focus of our interest lies on the historical and constructive aspects of the novels Pasenow the romantic, Esch the anarchist and Huguenau the realist. The study is divided in two parts. The first one contains a discussion on the literary and historical context, on the authors thought and on theoretical questions about the novel as a genre. In our view, the trilogy offers a unique commentary upon the crisis of the novel around 1930. Moreover, we take Brochs ideas as an ethics of totality and we propose a realist and metaphysical rhetoric as a key device of the text of The sleepwalkers. The second part consists of observations on the narrative composition, in which we analyze the dynamics of similarities and differences among the three titles. Our aim is to provide a framework for the understanding of the trilogys literary place and specificity. Impatience of knowledge in Broch means poetry capable of anticipating science, novel being able to anticipate philosophy.

Coleções de história natural no Museu Paulista, 1894-1916 / Collections of Natural History in the Museu Paulista, 1894-1916

Diego Amorim Grola 20 March 2014 (has links)
Between 1894 and 1916, the Museu Paulista was under the management of the zoologist Hermann von Ihering. During this period, the museum gathered collections of considerable size, which encompassed objects concerning to different disciplines. Through these collections, the Museum was able to produce and communicate knowledge about the nature and the man of South America. Gather and use collections are procedures intrinsic to the practice of Natural History. However, they may be deeply investigated, bringing out unsuspected dimensions of the history of museums and natural sciences. This dissertation aims to investigate the acquisition and use of collections of Natural History in the Museu Paulista of Ihering. We intend, therefore, to contribute to the understanding of the development of the first public museum in the state of São Paulo. More than that, we aim to understand the central role of scientific specimens in the production and communication of knowledge about the South American nature. To do so, we will examine the major steps involved in curating the collections: the acquisition of objects, its mobilization for the production of knowledge and its display in the public exhibitions. Keywords: material culture; collections; scientific specimens; Museu Paulista; Hermann von Ihering

Art des nerfs, nerfs d’artiste. Modernité et maladies nerveuses dans la littérature française et allemande, 1865-1914 / Art of the Nerves, the Nerves of an Artist. Modern culture and nervous disease across French and German literature, 1865-1914

Peri, Francesco 23 March 2019 (has links)
Based on a cross-examination of medical, scientific, literary, and critical materials, this work attempts a transnational genealogy of the concept of Nervenkunst (“art of the nerves”). Through a historical reconstruction of the French origins of the discourses that coalesce in that category (and a survey of their prerevolutionary and ancient sources), our research proves that a genetic connection between the writer’s craft and the nervous system is neither a peculiarity of Austrian literature in the 1890s nor a premonition of psychoanalysis, but the product of a system of exchanges and transformations that span several centuries, to converge in the years of early Naturalism. The first part chronicles the invention of “modern nerves”; in other words, it offers a cultural history of the neurological imagination before and after 1789. The second part describes the genesis of an idea of the nervous author during the Second Empire and the early Third Republic (focusing on the work of the Goncourt brothers and their entourage). The third part deals with the germanization of these originally French contents: how did these notions take root in the German-speaking world at a time (1870-1890) when Berlin’s relations with Paris were problematic at best? The answer lies in a system of cultural mediations and mutual perceptions that involves, among other things, Austria and Scandinavia.

It became evident that, in the end of the XIX century, the need of this formation caused many controversies, because number was understood as gift by God and consequently, considered something perfect. To the development of this research, we had as references Gramanns works, the first mathematician to consider, even if, in an unconscious form, the Axiomatization of Arithmetic. The main reference was the article entitled: The debate about the Axiomatization of Arithmetic: Otto Hölder against Robert Gramann by Mircea Radu (2003), in which, there is a debate about Axiomatization of Arithmetic under two points of view, on the other hand, we have Otto Hölder who believed in the synthetic nature of Mathematics, in such case, he rejected the axiomatical method as base for itself, and otherwise, Hermann Gramann and Robert Gramann that agree with the same idea, but they reject the axiomatical method. However, Gramann didnt understand so well his treatment of Arithmetic, because the laws that would define the natural numbers belonged to Algebra, another discipline that Grassmann considered as originated for all the other ones. In the development of this research, we indicated that the bases of the Axiomatization of Arithmetic were in the salience of big transformations occurred in Mathematics in the time of XIX century and beginning of XX one: the appearing of the non-Euclidean Geometries, the Algebra s release of Arithmetics veins and the intricate process of Arithmetization of Analysis. In this period, it also developed the relevancy or not of the use of axiomatic method as a basis of Arithmetic. We concluded that, in spite of all controversies of this period, 11 the possibility of Axiomatization of Arithmetic and the adoption of the axiomatical source in formal sciences contributed for the exact sciences / Esta pesquisa teve como objetivo o desenvolvimento epistemológico do objeto de conhecimento número em sua constituição como entidade matemática.

Hermann Glöckner – Ein Beitrag zum Konstruktivismus in Sachsen

Welich, Dirk 20 July 2006 (has links) (PDF)
The dissertation explores the work of Dresden artist Hermann Glöckner (1889-1987). Contrary to existing studies which have been characterized by biographical approaches, this dissertation follows an approach based on theory of art. In the first part, the method is to strictly describe his work and analyze it according to functional logic; i. e. during this process a kind of artistic grammar is being produced. Set against the historical background of a search for a new identity by painters after World War One, the grammar shows clearly that the artist cherished – way more than hitherto assumed – a world view shaped by mathematic principles which, indirectly, led him on to a search for universality. The demonstration of the structures of the artist's way of thinking breaks new ground and shows that in all of his artistic expressions a primarily plastic way of thinking manifests itself. Although a few of his works are unequivocally arranged in a two-dimensional order, they reflect three-dimensional problems and thus point beyond themselves to a universe alien to nature. It becomes clear how the artist gains stimulus and energy by observing nature, while his works of art do not mirror this nature, but express their transcendence in a geometrical manner. The artist's insights gained during this epistemological painting process directly leave their mark on works which by their visual appearance seem to possess an equivalent in the outside world. However, these works also represent a verifiable, universal pictorial experiment to subsume the essence or inner sound of nature in a "unity of opposites". The analysis results in the conclusion that Glöckner's aesthetic position developed from a constructivist to a rather symbolic one. The second part of the thesis challenges the current state of research in relation to the autonomous artistic development due to political isolation, which also constitutes one of the main arguments for the assessment of Glöckner's works of art in the international context. Findings from extensive research describe the artistic environment of the early 20th century in Dresden in which the artist developed. At the same time significant connections to pivotal impulses in the development of his work are revealed so that their exceptional quality is demonstrated more clearly against a historic backdrop. Of key importance are individual works from art exhibitions in Dresden, especially from the 1920s, which Hermann Glöckner must have seen, since there are highly evident links to his own works. In studying the schooldays of the artist, the dissertation puts emphasis on a hitherto completely neglected aspect. Despite educational reforms starting in the middle of the 19th century, drawing lessons in elementary schools were hardly modernized. However, of all things the austere and reduced form, a controlled perception and the training in drawing elementary forms and assigning these to nature, turn out to be catalysts of Glöckner's artistic development. A doctrine otherwise perceived as restrictive and regularised as in an educational context is transformed in quite an extraordinary manner affirmatively into an aesthetic position which finds its artistic license in limitation. The focus of attention of the third part of the thesis is to determine Glöckner's position within theory of art and its evaluation in an international context. The main conclusion is that the artist as it were contributed with his ideas rooted in his oeuvre to the fundamental creative acts giving rise to modernist art theory, which has, however, not always been publicly acknowledged. His works possess the same character as the key works of art of the beginning of the last century and in some respects are even more radical than these. The authenticity of Glöckner's oeuvre is impressive, for all his life he had been working on a mirror of the world, which was he himself.
