Karl Marx's concept of time : its validity for contemporary historical interpretation.

Miller, Karen January 2001 (has links)
While Karl Marx's concept of time has not received the same attention as other elements of his work, it is nonetheless an important aspect of his idea about history. Of those studies which have dealt with this problem, three questions stand. First, to what degree does time contain transhistorical and historically specific elements? Secondly, to what extent does human agency or deterministic forces underpin the construction of historical time? Thirdly, what is the nature of the relationship between absolute and relative time? In attempting to answer these questions, this thesis argues that Marx saw each of these elements as playing an important role in the constitution of historical time.In particular, this thesis argues that Marx demonstrates that time is manifested in the material world through a process that expresses transhistorical features in the emanation of time through human creative activity, and historically specific elements in the socially constructed forms of time that reflect the material conditions of the particular society in which they appear. It suggests, moreover, that he shows how time is shaped by both human agency, in the form of class struggle over the appropriation and control of time, as well by deterministic forces as seen in the role of institutional structures and the movement and reproduction of capital. Again, it endeavours to show that Marx develops the notion that absolute time, which is an historically specific concept, plays a crucial role in capitalist society as a measure of exchange-value and labour time, and that it co-exists with relative time, which emanates through different production processes as multiple and discontinuous temporalities. It further argues that Marx saw capitalist society as giving rise to an historical time that is universal and directional, and that is changing in its nature in response to changes in ++ / methods and relations of production.More generally, this thesis attempts to demonstrate that Marx's ideas about historical time have the inherent ability to transcend their place and time to be relevant to contemporary historical interpretation. Such an approach, it suggests, can help historians to understand the operation of historical time in the different phases of the development of capitalist society, the nature and functioning of temporal logics of non-capitalist societies, and how changes in the forms of time occur within and between different social forms. Above all, it argues that his concept of time is highly relevant to the interpretation of history in the postmodern phase of capitalist development and that, indeed, his idea of time both shares a number of similarities with Michel Foucault's idea about time, as well as goes beyond such an explanation.

Zaslavsky, Susana Schwartz January 2010 (has links)
This thesis investigates the trainee professor of History in their initial training, completing the undergraduate course in History. The data collection was done in a private institution of undergraduate education in Porto Alegre, in the discipline of Teaching Practice I and II, during a school year. This was a multiple case study with five participants, selected from the class for their academic qualifications and their desire to participate. It also involves participatory research, in order that the researcher was a teacher of that discipline. To collect the data, we used a provocative strategy: the classes to be prepared by the trainees should contain a kind of solv-problems of the historical content, which in turn could generate a spatial-temporal comparison of this content. This strategy was intended to bring out what we wanted to investigate and to enable the trainees to promote History classes differentiated and meaningful to their students. It has been hypothesized that the study and considerations which the trainee performs to plan and conduct lectures and discussions in the discipline of Teaching Practice, and the guidelines for individual planning give them the opportunity to thematize relations between past and present, making these relationships subject of reflection, which is a possibility for grasp of conscience of space-time relations and their own actions, as well as reconstruction of the concept of historical time. The case studies were organized based on participant observation of the researcher as well as documents written by the trainees, their teaching plans and final reports. The theory that supports this research is the Genetic Epistemology by Jean Piaget, especially in regard to the grasp of conscience and building concepts. The research strategy was adequate to investigate what was proposed and the results point to a need to review the training table of contents for teachers of History, whose goal is to turn to a closer integration between content and pedagogical action. This thesis is part of a major research entitled Contributions of Genetic Ephistemology to school practices, coordinated by the academic adviser.

Because he does not agree with this, he exposes his arguments in favor of Christians. In order to strengthen his argument, Justin brings us past and contemporary events and relies on his eschatological hopes. The use of temporalities in his arguments led us to ask how he understood his present time. Based on the historical time of definition proposed by Reinhart Koselleck, we set out to analyze the First Apology to understand Justin's look towards his own time. We look after, in this way, to try to understand what factors underlie his tension, which would explain its vision of the world. In the search for a better understanding of these factors, we propose three steps: To broaden the knowledge about our source through the study of its form and content to analyze the most present intertextuality in his work (his conception of prophet and prophecy from Judeo-Christian literature) and, finally, the way he dealt with past, present, and future temporalities.

Lågstadielärares undervisning vid arbete med historiska tidsbegrepp : En studie om lågstadielärares historieundervisning vid arbete med historiska tidsbegrepp / Primary school teacher´s teaching when working with historical time concepts : A study of primary school teacher’s history teaching when working with historical time concepts

Granander, Philip January 2021 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis was to study the problems related to elementary school history teaching in primary school and which contributes to that high school students do not have the knowledge required to construct large and useful pictures of the past. This study therefore aims to create an understanding of which working methods that teachers use in primary school in their history teaching that benefit the pupil’s development regarding understanding and knowledge of historical time concepts, so that the pupils get the prior knowledge required from primary school. Therefore, a qualitative method will then be used to examine six primary school teachers´ lesson planning when working with historical time concepts and a semi-structured interview. That is linked to their history teaching when working with historical time concepts. By using historical thinking as a theoretical basis for the empirical analysis, the study showed that the problem regarding primary school teacher´s history teaching was not easy to understand, but rather multifaceted and trickier than previous research has shown. / <p></p><p></p>

Döingerösen : Särbehandling i döden / Burial in coastal carins 1600-1900 A.D in Blekinge county : Special treatment in death

Nordmark, Jonas January 2016 (has links)
This paper aims to investigate a relatively unexplored area in archeology. The target area is funerals located outside of the cementery in coastal areas and the landscape Bohuslän. The paper has also looked at other areas of investigation such as etnological folklore and historic research. Purpouse for this has been to broaden the perspective.  The timeperiod studied is primaly historic and by that means the studdy starts in late middle age Scandinavian time and finnish in early 20th century . The essay shows this burial form where a wast burial culture which coexisted with strictly  church controlled burial traditions. The locals named the burial tradition for ”döingerös”. From the begining it supposed to be burials for peopel who worked as sailors but this investigation shows that other people could suffer the same threatment. Keywords: Burials, Historic time, carins, funeral outside cementery, folklore, costal enviroment.

Les temps de l'action : Hannah Arendt, Michel Foucault et l' Antiquité / Time in action : Hannah Arendt, Michel Foucault and Antiquity

Cassidy, Meghann 22 June 2015 (has links)
The starting point of our reflections here concerns the concept of the event in contemporary philosophy. After an evaluation of the many meanings reattached to the term, we isolate two related concerns within contemporary political philosophy’s use of it : the inability to produce effective criteria for determining specific “events”; a tendency to reduce political action to its emergence within a larger and all-pervading historical framework. Hannah Arendt and Michel Foucault (in his “ethical turn”) avoid these pitfalls, defining the term while at the same time reflecting upon the conditions of political participation, particularly the role of the philosopher/theorist attempting to understand specific events and determine their meaning. But in thinking about this relationship, the two authors do not focus their attention on the concept of the eventν they look to “pre-modern” concepts, practices and events, particularly in Greece and Rome.At this point we ask an essentially historical question: given the “event’s” reduction of political action within history, given the critique of the modern subject and of modern history what are some of the relationships between history and political action in Ancient and Medieval historical practices? After identifying a number of historical themes during these periods, we return to Foucault and Arendt to enquire about their own representations of ancient thought and “forms of life”: the care of self and the philosopher, the polis, Roman authority and the idea of the actor… These descriptions will lead to ananalysis of the historical time that these representations presuppose, on the one hand, and of theirperformative and transformative functions, on the other. These enquiries will confirm our hypothesis,to wit, some pre-modern historical concepts are in fact renewed in the writings of Hannah Arendt and Michel Foucault.

Local history as a resource : a study of primary teachers´ use of local history to develop history awareness.

Hammar, Maria January 2023 (has links)
The purpose of my investigation is to see if and, if so, how teachers for the younger ages work with local history as a resource in history teaching. And if the teachers believe that the use of local history gives a greater historical awareness and makes it easier to remember the knowledge when the teaching becomes closer to the students compared to the more nationally adapted textbook. The focus is on the concepts of historical awareness, time perspective and place identity. The method I used is semi-structured interviews with teachers. I even took part in their planning, how they carried out the teaching and assessed it, based on the teachers' own stories. I have also analyzed the curriculum for the history subject and the textbook used as a basis. The results of the work are linked to previous research results and strengthen the previous theories that concrete teaching where the students are more involved and can relate to their local environment strengthens their awareness of history and gives a greater interest in their own history and in their home village. The survey is important when teachers plan their teaching in the subject of history and can give inspiration to how the teaching can be carried out to increase students' knowledge and commitment to the subject in both a national and a local context.
